Banhammers

Are you a frustrated OU player, just waiting for bans that you think are taking too long? Do you find that people won't listen to your complaints because you're not a top player, or because you don't have enough high ladder replays to back up your claims? Don't you just wish that everything you hated would just go away, at the snap of your fingers?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, then Banhammers is the Pet Mod for you!

In this Gen 9 OU-based Pet Mod, we play 1 roomtour every Saturday. After each roomtour, everyone who played in this gets to ban a certain amount of things from the metagame and the council can't do anything about it. This continues for a cycle of few weeks, where the metagame is then left in whatever shape it's in. The council will then perform tiering actions on the tier like normal, but anything that was banned during the initial roomtour cycle can't be unbanned.

Chaos will inevitably ensue and it will be beautiful, I promise you that!
:crabominable:Rules & Information:crabominable:
1. Every week for 4 weeks, we play a roomtour on Saturday. As DragonHeaven hasn't been updated to Gen 9 yet, roomtours will be played on the main Pokémon Showdown server in the Pet Mods room, using challenge commands to apply bans. A challenge command will be provided after bans take place for anyone who wants to play the metagame while waiting for the next tournament. The format of each roomtour (meaning if it'll be Round Robin or Elimination) will depend on how many people show up to them, so the format may change from week.
2. After each roomtour, everyone who played in the tournament will receive points. These points will be used to ban things. You receive 1 point for completing a game in the tournament (defined as either finishing a game, or forfeiting at a point where you were guaranteed to lose), 1 point for every game you win, and an additional point for winning the tournament.
3. After receiving their points, players can ban Pokemon, Moves, Items, and Abilities based on how many points they earned. It costs 1 point to ban a Pokemon, 2 points to ban a Move or Ability, and 3 points to ban an item. If a player only earned 1 point in the entire tournament, they are allowed to ban something that would normally cost them 2 points. Players cannot unban anything, add or remove clauses, be used for complex bans, or ban anything that's not a Pokemon, Move, Item, or Ability. All of a player's points must be used before the next roomtour and unused points do not carry over between roomtours.
4. Bans must be sent privately to a council member by 11:59 PM on the day after the previous roomtour, where they'll then be announced in the thread. Players cannot publicly reveal their bans (or planned bans) or knowingly influence the bans of others. Doing either of these may result in that player's points being revoked for that tournament.
5. If two people ban the same thing, that thing is still banned, but the player who sent that ban in second will not get to ban something else. Try to ban things that you think no one else will!
6. This mod will have multiple cycles, one coming after each major update during the generation (One was played when the generation began, one now after the HOME update, one for every DLC update we get, and one for any potential sequels or remakes.)

Now begins Week 0 of Banhammers!

Before we do any roomtours, we must first decide when we're going to play them. So, if you're interested in playing roomtours for this mod, please answer the poll at the top of the thread. Please pick any options that you would be able to do, as you can pick as many of options as you want.

The first roomtour won't be until next Saturday, December 3rd, so for now, you can use this thread as a Discussion thread of sorts (though the meta right now is just OU as is lol), just be sure to not reveal anything you plan on banning as per the rules of the mod.

See you Saturday!

Just gonna pop in real quick to announce that Ema Skye has been added to the council!
If your interested in joining the council, just let me know, just know that your duties during the roomtour phase would just be to make sure everyone follows the rules and to run tournaments if I'm not able to.

Also, keep those votes in the poll coming, it's extremely important that the tournaments are run at a good time!

See you Saturday!

This is going to be the most chaotic thing and I am so here for it.

My biggest question is if an ability is banned that some Pokémon have as their only ability (say Protosynthesis, for example), does this also ban those Pokémon from the Pet Mod?

Yes, as this is what has happened before in official tiers. For example, Sandshrew-Alola is banned from Gen 8 NU because both Slush Rush and Snow Cloak are banned from that tier. I originally planned this mod before Gen 9 started, but with Gen 9 adding a bunch of good mons all with one ability that they are all share with each other, things are gonna get very interesting early on I'm sure.

The time poll end yesterday, with 5 PM and 3 PM tying at 7 votes, and 4 PM coming in a close third with 6. Thus, to start, we'll have tournaments at 5 PM or 3 PM.

With that, I can officially announce that the first tournament of Cycle 1 will be tomorrow at 5 PM EST on the main Pokemon Showdown server! Be sure to join the Pet Mods room at 5 PM in order to join and bring a normal OU team for this first tournament!

The second tournament on Sunday will have Saturday's bans applied and will be at 3 PM EST (I chose to have the early time for Sunday as people maybe have stuff to do the next day).

Also, our Discord server is now up, so be sure to join that!

See you tomorrow!

The Roomtour is in the books!

This first tour was just Gen 9 OU to start, the calm before the storm if you will, but it was still pretty funny in places.

Unfortunately, the usage stats generator isn't working right now, but I can still announce that Jerrytkrot won the first tournament! Congratulations!

One entrant pointed out that my wording on the points system was a little odd, implying that you get a point for every game you compete rather than just 1 point for completing any games in the tournament at all. In light of this and for the sake of being an agent of chaos, for at least this week you will gain 1 point for every game that you complete. This means that winning is even more important, as you can gain 2 points for a win, but this also means that if you go winless in a double elimination or round robin tournament, you get a point for every game you play. This system may change to my originally intended system later on (as early as next week), but with all of the ban options you have right now, seems fair to start off with a bang like this.

Below are the points that everyone earned in this first tournament:
Mossy Sandwich: 1
SirPuppet: 5
Ema Skye: 3
Jerrytkrot: 9
zxgzxg: 1
gmfc: 1
anaconja: 3
Zach The Scrooge: 1
Yoshiblaze: 5
Lucky Potato: 1

We're just waiting on one more player, gmfc, send in their bans (privately in a PM) before I can reveal them and you all can start building for tomorrow's tournament at 3 PM EST.

See you very soon!

The full first wave of Banhammers bans are in!

There are some BIG ones in here to start with, so I'm intensely curious what you guys will do in tomorrow's roomtour.

Without further adieu, here are the first bans of Banhammers:

WEEK 1 - TOUR 1 BANS
To make things a little more interesting, we've decided to keep specific bans anonymous, so here are the bans organized alphabetically by what type of "thing" they are.

Pokemon: Gholdengo, Glimmora, Great Tusk
Moves: Drain Punch, Earthquake, Nuzzle, Rage Fist, Shed Tail, Stealth Rock, Swords Dance, Toxic, U-Turn
Abilities: Intimidate, Magic Bounce, Purifying Salt, Regenerator, Speed Boost, Unaware
Items: Booster Energy, Choice Scarf, Choice Specs, Leftovers, Light Clay, Rocky Helmet

Some huge things have already been banned, namely defensive tools in Stealth Rock, Leftovers, Regenerator, and Unaware, but also some big offensive tools like non-Band Choice items, Earthquake (lmao), Booster Energy, and U-Turn, and Shed Tail.

Here's the challenge command that you can use to test teams between this tour and tomorrow's tournament:
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ -Gholdengo, -Glimmora, -Great Tusk, -Drain Punch, -Earthquake, -Nuzzle, -Rage Fist, -Shed Tail, -Stealth Rock, -Swords Dance, -Toxic, -U-Turn, -Intimidate, -Magic Bounce, -Purifying Salt, -Regenerator, -Speed Boost, -Unaware, -Booster Energy, -Choice Scarf, -Choice Specs, -Leftovers, -Light Clay, -Rocky Helmet

The next roomtour is right around the corner at 3:00 PM EST tomorrow, so you should go teambuild for that ASAP!

See you tomorrow!

The second roomtour of Cycle 1 happened today, with dazzul winning!

Usage stats generator is still down, but if you wanna see the replays from this tour, with notable bans including Leftovers, Earthquake, and U-Turn, then you can link the spoiler tag below

And here's all the points that each player earned:
dazzul - 7 (Winner)
Jerrytkrot - 7
Ema Skye - 3
Squawkerz - 3
Yoshiblaze - 3
Lucky Potato - 1
Cratersmash - 1
Krankenwagen - 1
PalpitoadChamp - 1
PrimordialGrunt - 1

And last but certainly not least, everyone's sent in their bans, so here what'll be added to banlist for next week's roomtours!

WEEK 1 - TOUR 2 BANS
Pokemon: Barraskewda, Chien-Pao, Chi-Yu, Dragapult, Grimmsnarl, Ting-Lu, Volcarona
Moves: Body Press, Dragon Dance, Extreme Speed, Quiver Dance, Rapid Spin, Recover, Revival Blessing
Items: Black Glasses, Black Sludge, Life Orb, Sitrus Berry
Abilities: Drizzle, Drought, Protosynthesis, Sand Stream
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ -Gholdengo, -Glimmora, -Great Tusk, -Drain Punch, -Earthquake, -Nuzzle, -Rage Fist, -Shed Tail, -Stealth Rock, -Swords Dance, -Toxic, -U-Turn, -Intimidate, -Magic Bounce, -Purifying Salt, -Regenerator, -Speed Boost, -Unaware, -Booster Energy, -Choice Scarf, -Choice Specs, -Leftovers, -Light Clay, -Rocky Helmet, -Barraskewda, -Chien-Pao, -Chi-Yu, -Dragapult, -Grimmsnarl, -Ting-Lu, -Volcarona, -Body Press, -Dragon Dance, -Extreme Speed, -Quiver Dance, -Rapid Spin, -Recover, -Revival Blessing, -Black Glasses, -Black Sludge, -Life Orb, -Sitrus Berry, -Drizzle, -Drought, -Protosynthesis, -Sand Stream

Some very interesting developments here, which I'll go over briefly:

:sm/barraskewda:
Rain made an huge appearance during the tour, so naturally people moved to ban parts of it. While Drizzle did end up getting banned, Barraskewda also got banned, which I personally found very weird. I would've thought that if you didn't like rain, you'd just band Drizzle or Swift Swim, but people came after the fish instead. Had Drzzile not gotten banned, I 100% would've pulled up with Floatzel or Drednaw Rain next week.
Also, weathers in general are gone now, except Snow, so that'll be fun next week.

:sm/volcarona:
There were like 5 Volcarona sweeps/near-sweeps today, so yeah both Volcarona and Quiver Dance going made a lot of sense

:sm/appletun:
I use the GOAT Appletun and Body Press and Recover get banned immediately after. Curious!
In all seriousness, this likely came from Toxapex going wild as basically nobody prepped for it (which is fair when Toxic and Regenerator were already banned), as well as Corviknight having room for both Body Press and Brave Bird since U-Turn was banned. Defensive options in general continue to get cleared out, with Ting-Lu, Black Sludge, Recover, Revival Blessing, Rapid Spin, and Sitrus Berry all going.

:sm/dragapult:
But that's not to say that offensive menaces didn't get taken care of either. Chien-Pao and Chi-Yu and all the legal Scarlet Paradoxes (via Protosynthesis) got booted (RIP Based Slither Wing), as well as Dragapult which really liked Choice Scarf being banned. 2 more setup moves went with the aforementioned Quiver Dance, as well as Dragon Dance, Dragonite loses Extreme Speed so it can't cheat with Tera Normal anymore, and offensive mons no longer get Life Orb. Black Glasses as gone too, which is funny, especially as we'll inevitably head towards a meta where the only boosting items are type enhancers and Dark-types just don't have one lmao. Also, Grimmsnarl's gone, so Screens is extra dead after Light Clay got banned yesterday.

That's all for now! The next roomtour for this cycle will be Saturday, December 10th at 5:00 PM EST, so be sure to prep for it with this new bans in place.! In the meantime, you can use the thread for metagame discussion or sharing teams you used in this week's tournaments, just remember to follow the rules and don't tell people what you're gonna ban/want banned.

The points system may also be reevaluated now that we've had our hot start, but we'll let you know if anything happens before next week's tours.

See you Saturday!

That's all for now, see you tomorrow!

Both tours last week were characterized by a focus on HO teams, and this week was no different. However, teams instead shifted towards webs HO or Prankster-less screens to achieve this. The bans from today are really no surprise and reflect what did well. Spidops won a tour!!

So, we did have a roomtour today at 3 PM, but I feel like a lot of people forgot because we forgot to mention in the thread yesterday (or because it's a Sunday afternoon two weeks before Christmas and during Finals week for a lot of people, probably that too), so only 2 people showed.

But you can't stop the hammer, so the show went on! Congratulations to Yoshiblaze for winning today's roomtour!

Accidentally only had 1 battle cuz I set it to double elimination thinking it would force 2+ battles when I should've done Double Round Robin lol

Points Earned:
Yoshiblaze - 3
DoubleIronBash - 1

And here are the bans from this little roomtour!
WEEK 2 - TOUR 2 BANS

See you soon!

The people have spoken and some people have expressed interest in a second roomtour today, so we will have a second roomtour at 5 PM EST, which is 28 minutes from now. Hope to see you there!

Our impromptu second roomtour has concluded, giving us a much bigger batch of bans!

Congratulations to dazzul for winning the roomtour, their 3rd win in 3 tours!

Krankenwagen - 1
dazzul - 7
XenonHero126 - 1
Jerrytkrot - 3
PalpitoadChamp - 1

Okay so all but 2 of the bans were moves...

Aside from that, all I have to say is that wow, you guys really hate Corviknight, huh?
Also, every form of hazard control is now gone (Defog and Rapid Spin banned, Maushold and Glimmora bans removed Tidy Up and Mortal Spin, Magic Bounce banned, and Magic Coat was dexited), so we're gonna have a lot of fun with that next week.

That's all for now, but stay tuned for any midweek updates. See you soon!

Just popping in real quick to remind everyone that tomorrow's roomtour will be at 5 PM EST!

If you're having trouble teambuilding, which I understand given how much stuff is gone, there is one method that you can use to make your life a little easier in spite of the lack of a teambuilding client. I'm sure some of you have already been doing this yourself, but it'll still help to tell everybody.

Simply build your team in the Gen 9 OU format, make sure it's legal in that tier, then open an incognito tab or a different browser than the one you're using, import the team there, log into an account on the new tab (registered or unregistered, doesn't matter), and challenge your main account with the challenge command. This will allow you to use the challenge window as a makeshift validator.

As for teambuilding tips, one small piece of advice that I can offer right now is to try to find things that haven't been touched by the bans, or aren't affected too badly by them. You might be surprised at what you find, like how Gengar was basically unchanged last week before it was banned.

That's all for now, see you tomorrow!

Am too busy to make my usual fancy post rn, but I can't wait any longer to reveal bans before tomorrow let's roomtour at 3 PM EST, so here they are!

Pokemon - N/A
Moves - Destiny Bond, Moonblast, Nasty Plot, Parting Shot, Spikes, Yawn
Items - N/A
Abilities - Levitate, Slush Rush

See you tomorrow at 3 PM EST!

A little later than usual, but the bans from the second tour of Week 3 are in!

WEEK 3 - TOUR 2 BANS
Pokemon: Corviknight, Indeedee-F
Moves: Calm Mind, Toxic Spikes, Trick Room
Items: Flame Orb, Heavy-Duty Boots
Abilities: N/A

Week 4 will be the last week of roomtours for Cycle 1, after which the tier will be run like a normal tier by the council until Cycle 2 starts, so be sure to get ready and get your teams ready to make one last impact on the metagame!

Also, council is considering making some changes to the formula for Cycle 2 that we'd like some input on later, so look out for that!

See you at 5 PM on Saturday!

Quick update, I kinda forgot that Christmas was this weekend, so in light of the fact that people will likely want to not play Pokemon Showdown on Christmas, we will be postponing the final two Cycle 1 roomtours to next week. Next week still being a holiday is awkward, but people will likely be less busy during the day.

See you next week!

Popping in real quick to remind you that the second to last roomtour of Cycle 1 starts in an hour and 30 minutes!

Be sure to follow this link to get to the Pet Mods room on Showdown so you can participate!

New Year, New Bans!

Yesterday, we had the penultimate roomtour of Cycle 1 of Banhammers!

we created a metagame where skeledirge and basculin were broken and the only way of setting hazards was glimmet's toxic debris. amazing.

Anyway, here's the second-to-last bans of Cycle 1 and (I think) the first bans of 2023 for any Smogon metagame!

WEEK 4 - TOUR 1 BANS
Pokemon: Ditto, Glimmet, Sandaconda, Skeledirge

That's all for now, see you later today for the last roomtour of Cycle 1 at 3 PM EST!

The final roomtour of Cycle 1 is in the books! Let's see what chaos we have ultimately left behind!

From a metagame where Basculin and Blaze Skeledirge were broken to a surprisingly defensive metagame (despite having basically unchanged Cinderace) where Chansey, Bellibolt, and Dudunsparce reigned supreme. This is evolution.

For real though, this was probably my favorite roomtour just because the creative degenerate stuff that everyone brought, exactly the the dystopion future I wanted, so shoutout to everyone who played.

Now, for the final bans of Cycle 1

A whole ton of bans to close out Cycle 1!

Thank you to everyone who joined us on the wild ride. Thanks to you, this is the meta that we'll have until Cycle 2 begins.

Speaking of Cycle 2, which will begin when Gen 9's Pokemon HOME update releases, we'll put a poll out soon about how we should handle the points system for that Cycle 2. As we saw with Cycle 1, points were kinda everywhere, which meant that stuff got banned very fast, which made teambuilding very hard without teambuilder support and destabilizes the meta very fast (though this part is to be expected when the meta changes every week, but still). The poll will most likely be up tomorrow and will last a week.

In the meantime, I'll be sure to post a few resources for Cycle 1 (Viability List, Role Compendium, and maybe Speed tiers) for anyone that wishes to play others in the metagame. Note that Terastalization will be legal in full as Cycle 1, regardless of the results of the suspect test that's about to end, started when Terastalization was fully legal. The challenge command will be updated to reflect any changes the suspect test brings to OU to preserve this.

That's all for now, see you soon!

So, that was a lie....

Hello everyone and welcome back to Banhammers!
While I unfortunately never got around to making those resources to play a post-Bans Cycle 1 metagame, we now get to start all over with the Post-HOME metagame, giving you that Banhammers fun that you forgot you missed!

Before that, though, we will be making a couple changes. The mod is all about banning stuff, but I think we can all agree that the bans came in a bit too fast with the current points system + 2 roomtours a week, which, in combination with no teambuilder support since Gen 9 wasn't a thing on DH back then, made teambuilding in the later weeks an absolute pain, which dramatically drove down participation. Thus, the council has decided to run a survey to decide the new format for determining ban points, with the options being:
- 1 Roomtour per week, current points system (1 point per game played (and finished) + 1 point per game won + 1 point for winning the tournament) - The least drastic change, this simply cuts the amount of bans in a week by half by only playing 1 roomtour a week while keeping the current high point system (that only existed because of vague wording lmao). This would already make teambuilding way easier, since you don't have to rebuild all of your teams on Saturday night into Sunday evening
- 1 Roomtour per week, originally intended points system (1 point for entering and playing at least 1 game in the tournament + 1 point per game won + 1 point for winning the tournament) - Similar to the first option, but players who make it further in the tournaments don't get nearly as many points, which makes things more stable and puts less power in those who make it far every week, making things more fair in theory.
- 1 Roomtour per week, Pooled Points system (Same as the current points system, but instead of points automatically banning something, you use your points to submit a ban to a pool. For every game they win, a player may pick something from the pool (that they didn't put there themselves) to ban. The winner of the tournament gets an additional ban as well) - A bit of a more complicated system, but a very interesting one proposed to me by council member Ema Skye. To me, it's neat because it changes the more individualistic banning "metagame" into a more cooperative one, that may put slightly more emphasis on trying to do what's best for the metagame instead of banning stuff for fun (though you'd still easily have the option to ban stuff for fun, keeping the spirit of the mod intact).

Since all of these proposals have us only playing 1 roomtour a week, Cycle 2 will likely last more than 4 weeks (will confirm later but likely 6 weeks)

You can answer the poll at this link HERE. The poll will be open until Monday, June 5th, so make sure to get your answers in by then!

I'd also like to announce that, for Cycle 2, there will be teambuilder support! Now that Gen 9 is on DragonHeaven, I should be able to make a format on DH for teambuilding purposes, with all the incoming bans implemented and more. This would also mean that it would be possible to play Banhammers on DH, though I highly recommend only using DH to teambuild and then playing games on main, which is also where tournaments will continue being held.

And that's all for now! Cycle 2 of Banhammers will begin on next week, with the first roomtour being on Saturday, June 10th! Whatever's legal in OU on June 10th will be legal in the first roomtour. Unless Terastalization gets banned before the first roomtour, Terastalization will also be legal for that roomtour and the entirety of Cycle 2.

See you Monday for the poll results!

The survey has now concluded!

By a very close vote, we will be keeping the current points system!
This'll keep ban point totals high, but with us only playing 1 roomtour a week now, the metagame shouldn't get nearly as chaotic or hard to build for as quickly as it did last time.

Additionally, roomtours will once again be on 3 PM EST on Saturdays!

Lastly, I asked in the survey if there was anything else that people would like to see changed, with one idea catching my eye. One person noted that item and move bans are particularly powerful as they can very quickly make whole strategies or even whole typings obsolete. Thus, they proposed that we could make item and move bans worth 2 points instead of the standard 1 point like before. I personally am very open to the idea, especially since the current high points system is being retained, but I'd like to know everyone else's thoughts on it.

Thus, I'd like you guys to discuss the idea either here or the Banhammers Discord and we'll announce what we'll do before the first roomtour, likely on Thursday or Friday.

Speaking of which, the first roomtour of Cycle 2 will be on Saturday, June 10th at 3 PM EST! Hope to see you there!
