Battle Spot Singles Sample Teams (New Season 4 teams, season 5 currently underway!)

SM Battle Spot Singles Sample Teams Thread

Banner graciously provided by kind user blazenix
Approved by cant say
Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to archive SM Battle Spot Singles teams that have had significant battling success, which intend to help beginner and intermediate players get assimilated to the metagame. As teambuilding in Battle Spot Singles is no easy feat and often quite daunting to users, having a trustworthy foundation to work from can be very beneficial.

Guidelines

All users are welcome to submit a sample team if they believe it has potential, but must include the following;

  • An importable version of the team
  • A brief explanation of each Pokemon's role in the team and an overview of how the team works
It is also suggested for users to include proof of tournament, showdown ladder, or cartridge ladder success. Archived team selection will be done by myself and some Battle Spot Moderators. Here is what a correct submission should look like (NOTE: This is only an example, the team itself will be outdated in the current metagame):

This team is based around a core of Tapu Koko and Mega-Metagross. These two mons have great offensive synergy and eliminate each other's threats, including Mega-Metagross dealing with Porygon2 while Tapu Koko can take care of Mega-Gyarados. Hydreigon has great synergy with Tapu Koko and Mega-Metagross, providing an essential Ground-type immunity and counter to Mega-Gengar. It also completes a VoltTurn core with Tapu Koko and has great speed control with Choice Scarf. Assault Vest Mamoswine helps to patch up the Fairy-type weakness which Hydreigon introduces, while it can also check Mega-Salamence, switch-in comfortably against opposing Tapu Koko, and pressure Porygon2 with Fissure. The team was lacking some defensive capabilities at this point. Buzzwole was added in as a physical tank and another reliable Porygon2 and Mega-Kangaskhan answer. Still weak to Mega-Salamence, defensive Gyarados was added in, also managing to serve as a soft check to Alolan-Marowak.

I started to build around a core of Mawile, P2 and Chandelure.
Mega-Mawile is one of the best TR sweepers in the game with a good pre-mega ability in Intimidate, good bulk (lives for example -1 252 Atk Garchomp Eq) and the highest Atk stat in the whole game. The EVs are standard and Fire Fang is better than Knock Off in this meta because of Z-Crystals and the huge amount of steels.
P2 is imo the best TR-setter with huge bulk and a pretty good offensive presence. The EVs are used to live 2 252+SpA Tapu Lele Psychics in Psychic-Terrain and to hit as hard as possible.
Chandelure is the second TR-setter and it is also used to counter Blaziken which is a problem for the two others. Shadow Ball and Overheat for Stab and Memento is used to sacrifice itself to let Mawile set up a SD more easily. Another option instead of Memento is Haze which allows you to stop Eevee-Pass and Set-up sweepers (especially Volcarona and MGyara).
Since my Team so far got demolished by Heatran I wanted to add some answers to it.
The next Pokemon I added was Nasty Plot Thundurus-Therian. Thundi acts as a Wallbreaker and also lategame sweeper. With Z-Focus Blast it can take out MKang which could otherwise stall out one turn of TR with Fake Out and it is in general nice to have a check to MKang. Thundi is also good against Celesteela, CharY teams (+2 Z-Focus Blast OHKOes most Hippos, Tbolt OHKOes CharY), Sand Rush and the best thing: All-Out-Pummelling Nasty Plot Thundi-T beats almost every stall team. Most Thundurus run HP-Ice coverage but I chose Sludge Wave instead to be able to OHKO Tapu Bulu and Koko and to hit fairys in general very hard because I felt like I had a good matchup against Ground-types and things like MMence.
To help out with my Mamoswine weakness and to have another option against Blaziken, Lucario, Hippo, Salamence, Sand Rush, Volcarona, CharY, Xard, Landog, Garchomp and so on I added Defensive Gyarados. The spread is just taken from the Smogon analysis. With Twave I have another option of speedcontroll and to get some Hax going with Waterfall and Para, Taunt is imo necessary on every team and beats lots of Aegislash which I troubled with so far. Btw: The synergy between DefGyara and Thundi-T is great and when you face stall you almost directly pick both of them.
The last Pokemon was previously a SubDisable Tapu Bulu but I had huge troubles dealing with Venusaur, Z-Aegislash, Heatran and wanted another answer to Sand Rush because it became quite popular. That is why I changed Bulu to a quite special Landog. It lures in Venusaur and just OHKOes it with Z-Fly. Since my team had no switch-in to Spore and Breloom just beats the whole team because it is very slow, I EVed Landog to outspeed Breloom and set up a Sub on the Spore (they always use it turn 1 if there is no switch-in for it) and then you can beat it with Fly and an EQ. The EV spread also allows you to set up a Sub to take Aegislashs Z-Shadow Ball, use one SD, take the Shadow Ball and Shadow Sneak and OHKO with EQ (I was afraid of WP Aegi and thats why I wanted to ohko it). The spread also allows you to take 1 252+ Atk Mega-Mawile Play Rough, 2 252+ Atk Mega-Mawile Sucker Punch (~92% of the time) or 1 Play Rough + 1 Sucker Punch at -1. Furthermore there is a 68,8% chance to OHKO 252 HP/0 Def Mega-Mawile with EQ at neutral.

Threats to this team are:
Gliscor: If he doesn't come in against P2 with TR up it's gg most of the time (HP-Ice on Thundi-T might help a little bit but it's nor really worth it imo)
People you faced before and they have Breloom: You need to play the Sub-Spore games correctly because they know you are Sub-Landog.
Hax: This team is quite weak to hax in the form of Crits and flinches outside of TR because most times you move last.
Substitute: Sub, my favourite move in this meta, is unfortunately quite good against the main sweeper Mawile because they can predict Sucker Punch and get up a free sub.
Volcarona: Volcarona has the potential to sweep if it is a Roost + QD variant with Firemove + Z-Giga Drain. Ways to beat it are Sucker Punch (deals ~75% at neutral iirc) and Gyarados in TR (OHKOes the standard set with Waterfall) or a Chandelure Overheat crit.

Some hints:
If they lead sth like Gengar, Tapu Lele, Tapu Koko, Tapu Fini or other common Taunt-user against P2, go for an attack 1st turn because you aren't 2hkoed by them the most time and you get an almost free kill.
Tapu Koko (in Electric-Terrain) and Thundi-T don't OHKO Mawile with unboosted Tbolt.
Thundi-T isn't 2HKOed by Kokos Dazzling Gleam most of the time.
+2 MMawile OHKOes most Hippos (most I see are SpDef).
At -1 252+Atk LO Blaziken HJK and 252Atk MLucario CC don't OHKO P2 from full.

Ok so the team was based around Z-Haze Tapu Fini. Its such a monster for defensive teams to face, while also living a ton of hits from different offensive threats. The other starting mon was dd mega mence, as I just rly like the mon and its rly good so I figured why not. The next mon added was a SpDef Celesteela, as it completed a Steel/Fairy/Dragon core while also checking a ton of threats in the prebank meta. Its shed shell so magnezone doesnt dick you at preview. Next added was a SpDef Marowak since it covered the electric weakness really nicely while still providing decent offensive pressure due to thick club. It was wisp to neuter physical attackers on the switch when not in misty terrain to further enhance how difficult this team is to break. After wak I added muk, as I was iffy on my Lele matchup and I just really like the mon since it provided a great matchup versus all the tapus. It also has effectively 150% bulk so it fits with the idea of fat shit that the opp cant break. The final member of the team went through a couple iterations before I decided on buzzwole. It was added to glue up the otherwise iffy mamoswine matchup and add more physical bulk. The team is centered around taking any hit the prebank meta could throw its way, while not being super passive. Every single mon on the team has some form of offense presence to keep the team from ever becoming super passive, while also having really good defensive capabilities so I didnt have any autolose matchups. As far as achievements this team has garnered, there aren't too many. I wasnt too awful active in bss during prebank, so it doesnt have any really good ratings attached to it from ps or on cart. Fwiw I won I think 3 roomtours(aka every room tour Ive joined) over the course of prebank.

So that's my team! Its all around super solid and Id love to have it archived just to give people an idea what prebank was like months and years from now when this meta is all but forgotten.

This is the team that I had the most sucess with during pre-bank. I'm so proud of it, but the meta changed and it's time to say goodbye.

The starting point of this team was Mega Kangaskhan. Even with the Parental Bond nerf, it's still a very threatening mon to face. Next is Porygon2, the best defensive pokemon the meta had at that point, capable of dealing with popular offensive threats such as Gyarados, Garchomp, Tapu Koko and Marowak. After that I picked up Tapu Koko to help with the Fighting weakness my team has. I chose a more defensive set since it helps taking on Mega Lucario better, as well as Gyarados, Xurkitree and other Tapu Koko. Muk was added to better handle Lele and the other Tapus, and to screw over Aurora Veil strategies. Mamoswine helps the team as both a lead and revenge killer, with its STABs taking on a huge part of the meta. The last mon added was Celesteela, to help avoid Earthquake spam and being an annoyance overall, but Magnezone matchups were always scared it out, so I made this spread that can 1v1 it most of the time if necessary, while also dealing with Scizor and opposing Celesteela. This team isn't based around a set strategy, I made it so I could use any combination of the 6 and be okay most of the time. The only matchup problem this team has is Mega Lucario, but I didn't face it so much and I could play around or revenge kill most of the ones I did encounter.
As for achievements, this team got me to 1st place in Brazil in Season 1 with a rating of 1755 and 2nd in Season 2 with a rating of 1665, as well as a peak of 51st on the PS ladder.

Starting with Pyukumuku, simply the bulkiest Unaware mon available. With Sitrus Berry Jolly M-Salamence Dedge is a likely 3HKO (very low chance to 2HKO). This either lets you take a hit and Harden to take further hits very comfortably, Counter straight off and still be somewhat healthy or switch in and take another afterwards if in a desperate situation. Harden can be switched for Soak to let you weaken hits (through STAB removal) and Toxic Steel- or Poison-types. I prefered Harden in the long run, to start it's massive PP can some times help when you need to pp stall something while they avoid attacking you because of Counter. Secondly at +1 Defense you still survive +6 M-Gyarados Crunch so you can in the long run beat a DD M-Gyarados by getting enough Hardens.

Gengar is the usual mega Wisp-Hex trapping stuff, with status moves through out the team a Hex clean up can be prepared quite easily. Speed is for M-Mence and bulk gives 16n-1 HP and a good amount of Defense.

Marowak-A, here for it's unique resitances and immunities. Pheromosa, Special M-Lucario and Tapu Koko all don't appreciate it's presence. Full SpDef lets it take an Aegislash or M-Gengar Shadow Ball from full and KO back with Shadow Bone. Perish Song beats Eevee setups (though they have now dropped in popularity) and Rest is the recovary so very needed.

Blissey > Chansey, Shed Shell stops it being M-Gengar bait. Also no Seismic Toss pre-bank so the only reasonable damage output is from Ice Beam, Flamethrower et cetera which Blissey pulls of much better. Speed investment lets it outspeed upto base 103s which have been paralysed, HP and Defense lets it live, 15/16 of the time, a +2 EQ from Garchomp.

Celesteela, usual Sub-Seed. Only major difference is Iron Defence, this lets it boost along side M-Gyarados, M-Salamence and others to not be beaten out by them.

Hydreigon, perhaps an odd choice but I needed something that could take on M-Gengar and Aegi while having reasonable bulk and Taunt (to help against other defensive teams). 4+ Z-Dark Pulse OHKOs 252/4 Aegislash-Shield. The SpDef lets it take a M-Gengar Focus Blast, the Speed hits 125 which is one point higher than max Speed Celesteela and the rest was dumped in Defense. Twave + Dark Pulse can offer some lucky outs when needed.

The idea behind the team is pretty simple: since the meta adapted so well to special Koko, with checks such as AV Muk, AV Celesteela, Marowak-A and so on, i wanted to use a Physical Koko to surprise my opponents. Z-Mirror Move Koko is not only very fun to use, but it's also capable to deal very well with those checks, and clear an entire team if it goes +2.
The team is either built around it, spreading some standard cores such as Gyara/Koko/Celesteela, Gyara/Koko/Aegislash and Mamo/Koko/Celesteela, either made to try to bait some cool moves to steal with Z-Mirror Move (for example Shadow Bone on Aegi), revenge killing and boosting Koko's attack to +2.
The team can obviously work even without bringing Koko on the field, but this would cut out half of the fun.

Its Balanced version:

Standard team, built around the Koko/Celesteela/Gyarados core. Koko can deal with bulky water such as Tapu Fini or Primarina, that could threaten Gyarados or Celesteela, and deal huge damage to everything that doesn't resist Electric-type, OHKOing mons such as Mega Salamence (hardly damaging even the most specially defensive oriented variants) or even 2HKO'ing the bulky ones like 44 SpD Bold Porygon2 with its Thunderbolt plus the Z-Thunder. Celesteela can deal with Mega Kangaskhan, Dragons and physical setup sweepers in general, such as Mega Scizor or even try to answer to opposing Mega Gyarados with the combination of Seeds, Rocky Helmets and Iron Defense.
Whereas Gyarados will offer another handy switch-in into Ground-type attacks and an answer to Fire-type pokemon, taking also the advantage of its Intimidate ability.
The team has Mamoswine in the back that acts as a strong Tapu Koko check, Nihilego that offers some pretty good offensive pressure, taking out opposing Tapus (such as Scarf Lele that could be a threat since Celesteela is Physically defensive), and Aegislash that is there mainly to face Pheromosa and Mega Lucario, taking the place of Celesteela if needed.
This team is a little weak to Buzzwole cores.

Okay, so as you folks may already know QR Teams are now accessible via the Global Link Website. So using the Battle Tree to look at their stats I transcribed the second most popular team on the QR singles rankings. It has a current win ratio of 1773 to 3556, roughly 49.86%, which is slightly below the win percentage of both the first and third most popular team which both are slightly above 50%.

Some things to note: 30 IVs are present in important stats despite the mons being level 100. Either Hyper Training doesn't translate to QR teams or that's an odd thing they forgot about. Seeing how that Tapu Lele has 8 Def (Which is translatable to level 50) makes me think it's intentional, though it still seems rather bizzare.

Also as a bonus, here's the top-ranked team with a win ratio of 4111 to 7825 (52.54%):

I honestly thought that I would have to be denying many teams, but all of these are quality and worthy of being samples. Thanks so much guys! Feel free to post more if you wish

Just curious what is the purpose of this Thundurus-T EV spread(being a rookie myself and all) if someone can explain. Thanks in advance.
To my understanding, these teams are Japanese and accessed through QR codes, so either we can't translate the info well enough to see the reasoning for the spreads or there's no reasoning / explanation given (this is probably the only reason I haven't added it in to the samples as of yet tbh)

I think the purpose of the spread is to guarantee survival of a Scarf Tapu Lele's Psychic (with psychic terrain active).

However, I find a better spread is 52 HP / 4 Def / 180 SAtk / 20 SDef / 252 Spd. It still survives the aforementioned Psychic but also survives Outrage from Jolly Garchomp, something which I've found comes in very useful.

Apologies for the double post, but this took me a while to do and I gotta share it.

I have made a replica of Battle Spot Player Silent Hill's Battle Spot Singles team, which tied for 2nd place worldwide last season on the 3DS Battle Spot Singles ladder!

Here's the link to the QR code replica of his/her team: https://3ds.pokemon-gl.com/rentalteam/BT-427B-B54F

This is where the post came from, which Jhon linked to earlier in this thread: http://nagoshirasu.hatenablog.com/entry/2017/03/21/100000

It may be in Japanese, but we gotta give this dude / dudette proper credit: they manage to get to #2 on the toughest ladder in all of Pokemon, so imo this should be celebrated, even if they aren't a Smogoner. It'll be interesting to get a handle on this winning team!

I hope to recreate more teams as well.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention: Special thanks to Spencertje for providing the Chandelure!

Real thanks for sharing these teams. I suck at team building so made a very similar team to that of the 7th one(Landorus-T, Tapu Koko, M-Metagross, Porygon2, Z-Volcarona, Tapu Fini) but went for Chesto-Cune instead of Tapu Fini. I am having success with it reaching 1740 points on BSS, a personal high for me.
Had one question regarding that Swarm Volcarona which I find interesting but I dont know if I can use it to its full potential(currently using a substitute one but with Fire Blast/ Firium-Z). Do you think its worth trying? Thanks in advance.

I'm loving the look of this team, but I'm a bit concerned on Mimikyu's and Charizard's EVs.
I can see Charizard being more bulky than normal, and being able to setup more with DDance and Roost should give him enough power and survivability to kill most threats, but what about Mimikyu?
Why the 252 HP / 252 Atk spread? Is it used as a bulky wallbreaker? Isn't usually Jolly+252 Spe better overall (thanks to disguise and extra speed to hit first)?

I have never seen that spread on Mimikyu, so that's why I'm asking.

I'll try that team for sure, thanks for sharing it!

I'll try that team for sure, thanks for sharing it!
I'm new to competitive Pokemon but I'd also like to know the reasoning behind Charizard and Mimikyu's EVs in that team as I'd like to try it out in Battle Spot.

124 Speed-EVs on Charizard = 204 points on +1 = one more point then pheromosa without a +speed nature. Charizard does not need any offensive Investment thanks to Dragon Dance, so you can play a bulky split on it.
252 HP + 4 Def on Mimikyu= 87.5% chance to survive a crunch from jolly +1 gyarados-mega and kill it back with z-play rough

Hey guys,
as I said in the BS chat on Showdown I wanted to share my Mega-Mawile Trick Room team to you. This team got me to Top 100 on the 3DS for ~1 week and to Top 10 on Pokemon Showdown twice (this is a battle against the recent #1, it was the "highest" battle I found in my replays: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7battlespotsingles-556608467 ).

The Team:
Mega-Mawile, Porygon2, Thundurus-Therian, Chandelure, Gyarados and Landorus-Therian
https://pastebin.com/wZLGRRCr

And as in the first post requested an explanation of the team:
https://pastebin.com/Cy4KukWF

I hope you enjoy my team and newer players get to know another kind of team besides from for example stall, hyper offense and balanced :)

Interesting to see bulky EVs with Curse and Focus Sash on Mimikyu on that last team. Can someone explain how to best use that set on the Japanese Sand team?
Trying to think as a japanese player (hard thing), he is probably using it for dedicated situations, such as if you use the non-sand core or if you lead with it vs certain mons. Anyway even without that sash Mimikyu still synergyzes pretty well with those 5 mons, and the Z was already taken so i guess putting a Sash on this it's not that horrible as it might appear at glance.
