If you're finding beef too expensive or environmentally damaging, you could always try the wartime beef substitute as suggested by the Beef Front (with thanks to the Beef and Dairy Network for releasing the archive episode that includes the recipe):

1. You need six carrots, a turnip, a lump of coal, a box of sawdust or some wood chippings, and an old pair of trousers.

2. Chop the carrots into small pieces and grate the turnip lovingly over them.

3. Leave the carrots and turnips to soak in a bowl of water with the sawdust and coal.

4. Take the trousers, tie knots in each leg and pour the mixture into both of them.

5. Bury the trousers in your garden for three or four nights, retrieving when the earth at the surface begins to crack.

6. Fry the resulting ersatz beef steak over a high heat, searing the trousers and releasing the moisture in the sawdust. Before long, you'll be tucking into a hearty meal. Delicious!

Or would you prefer to try the fifth meat instead? If so, you'll just have to join the Beef and Dairy Network podcast as they continue in the quest to uncover it.
