Bewear (Revamp) (QC 0/3)

[OVERVIEW]
  • Bewear performs as an effective wallbreaker due to its impressive Attack stat and unique STAB combination, which hits everything in the tier aside from Ghost-types for at least neutral damage. These attributes are further augmented by its access to powerful attacks such as Double-Edge and Superpower, as well as Swords Dance to punish passive Pokemon.
  • Its high HP coupled with its ability, Fluffy, allows Bewear to take contact moves quite well, which lets Bewear check various physical threats such as Golisopod, Tyrantrum, and Drapion.
  • However, Bewear's mediocre Speed leaves it unable to sweep, and its lacking Special Defense alongside Fluffy's additional Fire-type weakness invites in many of the tier's common threats such as Salazzle, Mega Blastoise and Raikou.
  • Lack of recovery outside of Drain Punch means that various forms of residual damage like Toxic and Double-Edge recoil are capable of wearing down Bewear over time, and can make it struggle to take advantage of Pokemon like Registeel.
  • Bewear also often competes with many other Fighting-types like Virizion, Toxicroak, and Machamp, who either have better speed tiers, greater coverage, or superior special bulk.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Double-Edge is one of Bewear's strongest Normal-type STAB attacks, with recoil as its only drawback.
  • Superpower gives Bewear another strong STAB-boosted option that scores easier KOs against Pokemon like Diancie, Bronzong, and Stealth Rock Metagross after a boost when compared to moves like Hammer Arm.
  • Shadow Claw allows Bewear to hit Ghost-types such as Mismagius, Palossand, Alolan Marowak, which otherwise completely wall Bewear's STAB attacks.
  • Drain Punch has notably less power than Superpower, but it can offset some residual damage, notably from Double-Edge recoil.
Set Details
========
  • An Adamant nature gives Bewear the most breaking power, but a Jolly nature can be used to outpace certain variants of Mantine and Metagross.
  • Normalium Z powers up Double-Edge into Breakneck Blitz, which removes the recoil and allows Bewear to OHKO bulkier Pokemon like Cresselia, Slowbro, and Mandibuzz after a boost.
  • Silk Scarf is an option if a Z crystal is being used elsewhere, which gives Double-Edge more consistent power and can allow unboosted Double-Edge to potentially OHKO Florges after Stealth Rock.
  • Fluffy is an excellent ability that eases set up while also allowing Bewear to actively check certain physical threats such as Barbaracle and Tyrantrum, although it leaves Bewear threatened out by most Fire-types like Ninetales.
Usage Tips
========
  • Against Pokemon that Bewear threatens out, it's capable of setting up with Swords Dance in order to effectively break bulkier switch ins such as Slowbro, Diancie, or Donphan.
  • However, if a more aggressive check like Noivern, Gardevoir, or Nidoqueen is expected, attacking immediately, even with a Z move, can heavily dent or KO its offensive checks, which can make Bewear much harder to revenge kill.
  • Ghost-types can switch into either STAB move with no issue, so predicting with Shadow Claw can open up Bewear for using its stronger STAB attacks.
  • Fluffy can allow Bewear to tank most contact moves such as Virizion's Close Combat in a pinch, but be wary of letting Bewear take too much damage if it is needed to check threats like Golisopod or Snorlax long term.
Team Options
========
  • Stealth Rock support from Pokemon like Metagross, Registeel, and Rhyperior assists in many of Bewear's KOs, and these Pokemon can also alleviate Bewear's weakness to Fairy-, Flying-, or Fire-type Pokemon.
  • Bewear can often struggle with Psychic-types such as Cresselia and Gardevoir, as they handle Superpower easily and can tank unboosted Normal moves, so partners such as Mismagius and Drapion can assist Bewear by taking advantage of Psychic-types, as well as Ghost-types.
  • Pokemon like Shaymin and Ribombee can threaten physical sponges like Donphan and Tangela, while baiting in Registeel and certain Rock-types, which can give Bewear an opening to wallbreak. The former also provides potential Healing Wish support, which can give Bewear another chance if it has taken too much damage early-game.
  • Bewear's vulnerability to many faster threats such as Salazzle, Noivern, and Mega Blastoise means that it appreciates partners such as Aerodactyl, Tyrantrum, and Mega Sceptile, who are capable of offensively checking such Pokemon.
  • Cleaners like Zygarde-10% and Lycanroc-Dusk are capable of capitalizing on Bewear's ability to wear down or remove Pokemon like Donphan and Golisopod.

Moves
========
  • Return is a fairly powerful Normal-type option with no drawbacks, but Double-Edge guarantees the 2HKO vs Slowbro and the OHKO against Florges and bulkier Noivern variants at the cost of taking recoil.
  • Superpower is the most ideal STAB Fighting-type move, as it is the strongest option with the most reliable damage, and the stat drops from Superpower are often not a big hinderance, as Bewear is likely switching out after getting a KO regardless.
  • Shadow Claw enables Bewear to avoid getting walled by Ghost-types such as Mismagius and Dhelmise.
  • Drain Punch gives Bewear a Fighting-type option that doesn't lower its stats, and can also keep Bewear healthy in order to tank more hits.
  • Facade is an alternative that can let Bewear be threatening even after a Scald burn, and can punish the opponent for hitting Bewear with Toxic.
Set Details
========
  • Adamant nature maximizes Bewear's damage output, with Jolly only being useful for outpacing a few Pokemon like Mantine and Jolly Pangoro.
  • Choice Band gives Bewear great immediate power and capitalizes on its spammable STAB combination.
  • Fluffy enables Bewear to check and threaten out more physical attackers, which lets Bewear potentially punch a hole in the opposing team, but it does leave Bewear revenge killed easier by Fire-types such as Salazzle and Houndoom.
Usage Tips
========
  • Choice Band Bewear is capable of dealing great immediate damage without requiring a turn to set up, which can allow Bewear to threaten Pokemon like Metagross and Machamp easier in order to get more chances at wallbreaking.
  • Avoiding certain attacks like Knock Off can allow Bewear to bluff a Swords Dance set easier, which can dissuade the use of Protect from Pokemon such as Registeel and Vaporeon, which can otherwise safely scout what move Bewear locks itself into.
  • Ghost-types are an issue even with proper coverage, as they are immune to both STAB moves, and locking Bewear into Shadow Claw can generate free turns for certain threats such as Barbaracle and Virizion.
  • While Bewear's bulk alongside Fluffy can allow it to take a hit from Pokemon like Metagross and Machamp, it may need to stay healthy in order to switch into other threats such as Tyrantrum.
Team Options
========
  • Entry hazards from setters such as Necrozma, Roserade, and Forretress help Bewear achieve various KOs. Necrozma and Roserade can also pressure certain physical walls such as opposing Forretress and Tangela, while Volt Switch from a partner Forretress can get Bewear in safely.
  • While Bewear can nail Psychic-types on the switch with Normal moves, Pokemon capable of checking them like Golisopod and Houndoom are still appreciated, as Psychic-types can still pivot into Superpower and threaten Bewear if brought in safely.
  • Pokemon such as Noivern and Dragalge can help check various threats to Bewear like Roserade and Salazzle, while also drawing in Snorlax and Registeel, which creates an opening for Bewear to wallbreak. Dragalge is also able to absorb the occasional Toxic Spikes, which otherwise can wear Bewear down much faster.
  • Cleaners such as Barbaracle and Shaymin appreciate Bewear's wallbreaking and ability to pressure threats like Golisopod and Registeel, with Shaymin capable of supporting Bewear with Healing Wish as well.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Bulk Up alongside Substitute and Leftovers can make Bewear more difficult to take down on the physical side and can punish passive Pokemon like Bronzong and Registeel, but loses out on the raw power of Swords Dance and a Z move.
  • Taunt can also harass defensive Pokemon by preventing status and recovery, but requires sacrificing a coverage move or Swords Dance.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Special Attackers**: Bewear's mediocre Speed and relatively lacking Special Defense leaves it vulnerable to getting revenge killed by Pokemon such as Salazzle, Noivern, Mega Blastoise, and Roserade. However, many of these Pokemon struggle to switch in safely.

**Psychic-types**: Bulkier Psychic-types such as Slowbro and Cresselia are capable of pivoting into most, if not all, attacks safely, only taking notable damage from boosted Normal-type attacks. Gardevoir can use Trace to copy Fluffy, which allows it to switch into any attacks other than Breakneck Blitz. Other Psychic-types like Sigilyph and Espeon can threaten out Bewear easily and can attempt to pivot into Fighting-type moves, but risk being KO'd by other attacks.

**Ghost-types**: Although few and far between, Ghost-types such as Mismagius, Palossand, and Alolan Marowak can put Bewear in poor positions, as they can only be hit by weaker coverage options. Most Ghost-types can also set up freely if Choice Band Bewear locks itself into a STAB move.

**Residual Damage**: Bewear's lack of reliable recovery leaves it vulnerable to getting chipped down by entry hazards, Toxic, Double-Edge recoil, and repeated attacks from Pokemon like Tyrantrum and Metagross.

Friendly a.m. check. Implement what you want, but good job with this. Also, don't EVER leave an analysis in WIP for two months EVER AGAIN!

I think this is the more important reason why to run Bewear. That STAB combo and high Attack is nice, but Bewear's ability to switch into these threats is what makes it as good as it is. I would rather you emphasize Fluffy over its power.
  • However, Bewear's mediocre Speed leaves it unable to sweep, and its lacking Special Defense invites in many of the tier's common threats such as Mega Blastoise, Ninetales, and Raikou.
  • Lack of recovery means that various forms of residual damage like Toxic and Double-Edge recoil are capable of wearing down Bewear over time, and can make it struggle to take advantage of Pokemon like Registeel. While that's true of Swords Dance, Band can somewhat mitigate this with Drain Punch. Might want to mention that.
  • Bewear also often competes with many other Fighting-types like Virizion, Toxicroak, and Machamp, who either have better speed tiers, greater coverage, or superior special bulk. I feel like these Pokemon do different things from Bewear. If anything, I would compare Bewear to Hariyama: it actually can switch into Fire-type attacks and beat them. But that's up to you.
  • There's nothing about Fluffy's added Fire-weakness. Fix that.

  • Bulk Up alongside Substitute and Leftovers can make Bewear more difficult to take down on the physical side and can punish passive Pokemon like Bronzong and Registeel, but loses out on the raw power of Swords Dance and a Z move. Kinda iffy on this one, but wait what QC says.
  • Taunt can also harass defensive Pokemon by preventing status and recovery, but requires sacrificing a coverage move or Swords Dance. its ability to hit Ghost-types with Shadow Claw. also i would mention taunt makes for a pretty excellent stallbreaker if coupled w drain punch
  • I would maybe add Rock Slide here. It prevents stuff like Noivern, Ninetales, and Salazzle coming in for free, as well as give super effective coverage against Golisopod. But mention that Bewear's Normal STAB does considerable damage to them, regardless. the issue w rock slide is that 1) normal stab already nails all of those 2) bewear is kinda pressed for slots already 3) half its niche is being able to kill those w just normal stab and not require extra coverage. this can stay off the analysis i think
Checks and Counters
===================
