Hey everyone, here we are again for the next installment of the Tournaments Room Best 'Leaderboarders' Tournament. As I'm sure a lot of you know, the Tournaments room is one of the official rooms on PS alongside the Lobby and the Help rooms. Due to the successes of the previous tournaments, and this becoming an annual event, it's now time for BLT V to come to fruition.

What is BLT and how can I partake in this event?

Essentially, whenever we have a scripted tournament within the room, the top four players get a certain number of points based on the prominence of the tour. There are also four official tournaments every day, the formats of which decided on beforehand in our monthly schedule. Every time someone receives points from a tournament, it is documented by our room-bot, Lady Monita. At the end of each cycle (around two weeks), we look to see who has the most points on the leaderboard, and the top player is recorded in our Hall of Fame.

This will be the basis for the qualification for BLT:

The top sixteen on the leaderboard for the cycles in May and June will be guaranteed a spot in the tournament on one of eight ten-player teams (8 qualified + 2 subs). Co-managers will be drafting from the pool of qualified players to form their team (our website will have player stats to see which tiers the players excel in). Managers will also choose their two substitutes from a certain area further down the leaderboard, so if you don’t make it into the top sixteen, you still have a chance of getting onto a team!

Good sportsmanship in the Tournaments room is required to participate in BLT V. Overwhelming toxicity, collusion, or otherwise going out of your way to bypass the anti-scouting measures in the room will not be tolerated and will result in a ban from competing in BLT V. If you are a victim of any of these during our room tours, please contact a staff member (with room %, @, or #) with relevant screenshots as evidence"

So now with the main qualifications out of the way, lets move on to the teams that will be competing this BLT.

There are eight teams competing and they are as follow

Like last year's BLT we shall be performing an Auction draft for teams to select their players. What this will entail is that we will go through the list of managers and they will nominate a qualified player to bid upon. This will repeat until all players are auctioned off. Once the auction has been completed and all teams have 8 players a snake draft will follow for the teams to choose their substitutes. The order of the snake draft will be chosen depending on the remaining funds of the team from the auction. The team with the most funds leftover from the Auction will go first and it will follow that order to the team with the least funds.

Qualifer Check-In

After each cycle when the qualified players are posted, they will need to check-in on this post to confirm their spot. Each player will have until the next set of qualifiers to confirm their spot. If this is not done before that moment, players will lose their spot and will have to re-qualify to be able to compete and confirm their spot. When checking in the following information will be required:

  • PS! Username
  • Timezone
  • Top 1-3 Tiers that you'd want to be playing

Point Transfers

Please refer to post #29 on this thread on this topic.

Tiers and battle format

The tiers that we will be playing this season are as follows (please change if need be)
  • SM Ubers
  • SM OU
  • SM UU
  • SM RU
  • SM NU
  • SM LC
  • SM DOU
  • SM Monotype

As with the format BLT I, II, and IV the eight teams will be split up into two groups of four. All teams within a group will battle each other in three one-week periods. Winning the week secures the team three points, the losing team gets zero points, and a tie results in one point to both teams. At the end of the three weeks, the two highest placing teams in each group will move on to the semifinals. In the semifinals, the higher placing team from Group A will face the lower placing team from Group B, and the higher placing team from Group B will face the lower placing team from Group A. The winners from these matchups will face in the finals.

How will the substitutes work?

To encourage parity in the tournament, the substitutes will be chosen in the final two rounds of the draft. These players will have to have placed 17th-20th on the leaderboard in at least one cycle between May and June. Keep in mind that in the case of inactivity these players will have to step in and play whichever tier is needed, so versatility is key! Every manager will pick two substitutes, so tryouts in multiple tiers are your best bet if you didn’t qualify!

Activity Calls

Make contact with your opponents! Every season we have to make activity calls that displease one party member. To prevent this, post a VM on their Smogon wall to try to set a date for the battle. If you do this via any other medium, save logs and screenshots so that in the event of an activity call, you get it to go your way. Leave time zones, preferred time to play, and be specific. No activity calls will be made if neither team's players or managers post about it, so take initiative on that.

Dead Games

In the event that a game is not played and neither teams post for an activity call, it will be declared a dead game, that is the game will be taken as to not exist. This will also be the case if an activity post is made but neither players showed a satisfactory level of activity. Schedule properly to not let these occur!

What if there is a tie?

Using the system in place from the last tournament, we will have a best-of-three be played. Each manager will have 24 hours to choose one tier after the tie has been announced. Failure to comply will result in their choice being defaulted to SM OU. In addition to the two manager picks, the third tier will be SM OU. The managers will announce their picks in the thread or via PM to me, and will then submit their lineups for the three tiers. This will only come into effect in the event that there is a tie for the final four spots of the first stage, in the semi-finals, or in the finals.

Will there be prizes?

To encourage people to qualify, complete their matches on time and make sure they don't go inactive once the tournament starts, we will have a few prizes. They are as follows:

A nomination for Voice (+) rank in the Tournaments room: This will be awarded to the top two players with the most individual wins on the winning team of the tournament. Keep in mind that this is not a guaranteed promotion and is subject to change. Each nomination will be discussed among the staff, focusing on sportsmanship throughout the tournament, activity, and chat presence. This is subject to change since we have a few surprises in store for you guys!

Team entry in the Hall of Fame: The winning team will be recorded in the Hall of Fame which is displayed on our website for all to see. This will be great for bragging rights to your friends!

In-game prize: If you have a copy of SM, we will be breeding a good Pokémon for everyone on the winning team. The specific Pokémon hasn't been decided yet, but it'll definitely be good!

The previous seasons of the Best 'Leaderboarders' Tournament were received well and were fun for those involved. However, it was not without flaws, so we intend to fix up the issues the previous season had to create a more enjoyable experience for everyone. This is just an announcement of the start of the next qualifying season for BLT, and to inform you all that getting points over the next four biweekly periods will be much more important than normal.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss BLT and ask any questions that you may have and please keep this thread on topic as possible. Any offensive, or irrelevant posts will be removed, let just try to keep this civil. We hope to see you all in Tournaments chat! Good luck, and have fun!

good to see this happening again, but i question one thing, is there a strong reason to choose the "groups" format as opposed to round robin?

look, i know there are flaws involved in with round robin, for example, commitment issues. obviously, it's to be expected, 7-9 weeks of playing, some people are bound to get bored and eventually, drop out. but if i'm honest, i don't think you should be putting in the effort to qualify for this tour if you're going to get bored. sure, with the longer format the chances of people dropping out due to irl commitments are there, and that's fine, it's something we expect, hence the reason we have subs - to replace inactive people/people who have dropped out.

on the other hand, i think the fact that qualifying takes 8 weeks altogether but the event itself lasts 3 weeks minimum, and 5 weeks maximum is very discouraging. if you compare BLT to PLs (which don't even involve qualifying), they're much longer. on top of this, this is a tour a lot of tours room regulars look forward to, by making it longer, it makes the wait worth which otherwise isn't, . i'm not necessarily saying that length is a good thing, but in this specific scenario, i think it's ideal. i can't really say much without becoming cliché, so i'll stop here.

overall, i think a tour where each team can face each other is much more fun and competitive; it makes the almost year wait much more worth it, i've spoken about this to other people who look forward to this tour, and they seem to agree.

this season i swear hell i promise ya boi Lk will end his streak of subbing and qualify and you can believe that. *cue ceteris paribus with the roman reigns meme*
