Despite Mawile's natural low Special Defense, its typing allows for it to check various special attackers such as Roselia, Mr. Rime, and Glaceon while also taking hits from mixed attackers like SIlvally-Psychic better. Mawile's Intimidate also allows it to switch into physical attacks from Pokemon such as Silvally-Bug and Beartic. Iron Head serves as Mawile's STAB move, which allows it to hit the previously mentioned Pokemon harder, although Knock Off can help cripple them and many switch-ins such as Klang and Type: Null. Mawile also runs support moves in Toxic and Pain Split, which help wear its foes down and punish many switches. Pain Split also makes Mawiles harder to wear down, as it lacks recovery otherwise outside of Leftovers. Rocky Helmet can instead be used to wear down many physical attackers and punish U-turn users.
Setup Pokemon such as Ludicolo and Raichu benefit from Mawile's Stealth Rock wearing foes down. Furthermore, Knock Off can remove items such as Manectic's Choice Scarf and Type: Null's Eviolite, as it makes it easier for them to sweep. Due to how easily worn down Mawile is, Healing Wish support from Pokemon such as Mr. Mime and Mr. Rime can help late-game. Even after Intimidate, Ground- and Fire-type attacks from Pokemon such as Stonjourner and Heatmor still do a lot of damage. Because of this, it is useful to have a physically bulky partner for Mawile like Mareanie and Gourgeist-Super.

Mawile can be run physically defensive so, alongside Intimidate, it can check many physical attackers such as Fraxure, Leafeon, and Grapploct. Toxic allows for Mawile to cripple its foes and not be setup fodder for Pokemon such as Beheeyem and Bellossom. Mawile has various options for its last slot. Knock Off can remove important items such as Stonjourner's Choice Scarf, Vespiquen's Heavy-Duty Boots, and Mareanie's Eviolite. Super Fang works well alongside Toxic when wearing foes down. Finally, Taunt can stop foes from taking advantage of Mawile with moves like Type: Null's Rest, Musharna's Calm Mind, and Mareanie's Toxic Spikes. Leftovers is Mawile's only form of recovery, but Rocky Helmet helps wear down foes and punish U-turn users like Silvally-Bug.
Other hazard setters such as Roselia and Pincurchin can stack their hazards with Mawile's. The former also serves as a special wall, meaning it can check special attackers such as Ludicolo and Raichu, while Mawile checks physical attackers. Special attackers in general are a large threat to Mawile, such as Manectric and Lapras, although both struggle to switch in, fearing Mawile's Play Rough and support moves, respectively. Other special walls include Munchlax and Throh.

[SET COMMENTS]
On top of serving as a Stealth Rock setter, Mawile's decent Attack, great offensive typing, and Sheer Force and Life Orb combination make it a great way to break through bulky Pokemon such as Throh and Roselia. While Iron Head allows Mawile to hit Pokemon such as Shiinotic and Carkol harder, Thunder Punch can be used instead as a means to hit Mareanie, which resists Mawile's STAB moves. Sucker Punch attempts to make up for Mawile's low speed and allows Mawile to also serve as a revenge killer for otherwise faster Pokemon such as Manectric and Silvally-Psychic.
Mawile pairs well with special attackers that benefit from Stealth Rock while handling physically defensive Pokemon such as Gourgeist-XL and Dubwool, which give Mawile trouble. Examples of special attackers include Pokemon such as Heatmor and Beheeyem. In return, Mawile can break through specially defensive Pokemon like Munchlax and Type: Null. Other hazard setters such as Mareanie and Roselia can stack their hazards with Mawile's Stealth Rock. Furthermore, these hazards make it easier for Mawile to break through bulky Pokemon and revenge kill faster Pokemon with Sucker Punch. These fast Pokemon such as Leafeon and Manectric also make for good teammates for Mawile, as they can clean up the match after Mawile has weakened their threats with either power or Stealth Rock.
