===================
Heatran is the premier form of role compression in the CAP metagame. It can spread and absorb status, set Stealth Rock, and give invaluable utility against threatening Pokemon like Volcarona, Dragapult, Scizor, and Calm Mind Clefable. The combination of Magma Storm and Taunt allows Heatran to trap and remove Toxapex, Slowking, and Blissey. Furthermore, the high Base Power and residual damage of Magma Storm are useful to hit switch-ins that don't have reliable recovery, such as Landorus-T and Colossoil, harder. Earth Power is useful coverage against Fire-resistant and immune Pokemon like Toxapex, Astrolotl, and opposing Heatran. Toxic is important on Heatran due to it crippling most of its best switch-ins: Landorus-T, Slowking, and Arghonaut are some good examples. Stealth Rock provides valuable role compression; however, using it requires you to choose between Taunt and Toxic for the last moveslot. 120 Speed EVs allow Heatran to outspeed maximum Speed neutral-natured Magnezone and Aegislash, in addition to uninvested Landorus-T, with the rest after HP invested in Special Defense to check Pokemon like Dragapult and Tornadus-T more effectively.
Heatran is prone to getting chipped due to its lack of reliable recovery, so pivots that can bring it in safely like Zeraora, Dragapult, Syclant, and Rillaboom are very useful. Rillaboom is especially useful, as Grassy Terrain supplements Heatran's weak recovery from Leftovers while also reducing Earthquake damage. Heatran's weakness to chip damage means that entry hazard removal from Pokemon like Colossoil and Tornadus-T is essential to support it. Leftovers is its only form of recovery, so Knock Off absorbers like Tomohawk, Clefable, and Arghonaut are appreciated. Finally, offensive threats like Kerfluffle, Nasty Plot Tornadus-T, and Jumbao appreciate Heatran's ability to cripple and potentially eliminate Slowking, Toxapex, and Tornadus-T, while other wallbreakers like Dragapult appreciate Heatran spreading status and chipping foes like Tapu Fini and Colossoil.

Other Options
===================
Protect helps improve the Slowking matchup, grants extra turns of Leftovers recovery, and allows Magma Storm to chip switch-ins further, but it's usually less valuable than the utility of Toxic or Stealth Rock. Heavy Slam is a similarly niche option to beat Clefable, Blissey, Galarian Slowking, and Tapu Lele. Finally, Choice Specs can be run on sun teams for a strong wallbreaker off of Heatran's base 130 Special Attack and strong moves such as Eruption; however, the lack of defensive utility in comparison to the standard set renders it niche. Flame Body can be run to let Heatran lure in Jumbao, since Jumbao uses Trace to check Heatran, while also punishing Knock Off users like Zeraora and Weavile; however, without Flash Fire, you forfeit its ability to answer Volcarona and Flamethrower Clefable.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Bulky Water-types**: Tapu Fini, Shed Shell Toxapex, Arghonaut, and Slowking can all switch into Heatran and force it out with super effective moves and significant chip damage. However, the latter two don't like taking Toxic.
**Dragon-types**: Dragonite and Hydreigon resist all of Heatran's moves and can force it out with Ground-type coverage. However, they are both vulnerable to Toxic. Pajantom can switch into Heatran due to its high Special Defense, access to Earthquake, and immunity to Toxic, but entry hazards and Magma Storm can easily wear it down.
**Jumbao**: After copying Flash Fire with Trace, Jumbao resists or is immune to both of Heatran's attacks and threatens to 2HKO with Focus Blast, though it must be wary of Toxic.
**Ground-types**: Specially defensive Landorus-T, Colossoil, and standard Garchomp can switch into Heatran and threaten it out with Earthquake. However, Toxic severely limits these Pokemon's longevity. Hippowdon and Gastrodon are more reliable answers due to their bulk and reliable recovery; however, neither appreciate Toxic as well.
**Knock Off Users**: Heatran is very reliant on its item, as Leftovers is its only method of recovery as a defensive Pokemon. Therefore, Heatran must be wary of directly switching in on Pokemon like Toxapex, Scizor, Clefable, and Tornadus-T. None of them can safely switch in on a Magma Storm, however.
