[OVERVIEW]
* Best Chlorophyll sweeper
* Very difficult to stop once it gets going
* Teams must be built around getting up Sunny Day in order for Bulbasaur to be worthwhile
* Bulbasaur is largely useless outside of sun
[SET]
name: Chlorophyll Growth
move 1: Growth
move 2: Giga Drain
move 3: Weather Ball
move 4: Sludge Bomb
item: Eviolite
ability: Chlorophyll
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 236 SpA / 236 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
* Growth makes Bulbasaur far harder to counter
* Giga Drain allows Bulbasaur to stay healthy after setting up Growth. After a boost, it is strong enough to be used as a primary attack.
* Weather Ball is Bulbasaur's strongest attack in sun and has great coverage with Giga Drain.
* Sludge Bomb rounds out Bulbasaur's coverage options hitting Ponyta and Spritzee, and is not reliant on weather.
* Sleep Powder is an option over Sludge Bomb as it allows Bulbasaur to bypass certain checks such as Ponyta and Fire Punch Timburr if they are not sufficiently chipped. Overcoat Vullaby is immune to Sleep Powder however.
Set Details
========
* Special Attack and Speed are maxed to simply to deal the most damage possible and outpace almost every other Pokemon when Chlorophyll is in effect.
* Eviolite is the item of choice as the additional bulk creates more opportunities to use Growth.
* A Timid natures mainly allows Bulbasaur to speed-tie the odd Choice Scarf Diglett and speed-tie or outspeed opposing Bulbasaur. Additionally, Timid Bulbasaur hits 20 Speed in sun if affected by Sticky Web, which is still faster than most unboosted Pokemon.
* A Modest nature notably secures a KO on Ponyta after Stealth Rocks and Growth.
Usage Tips
========
* Bulbasaur is dependant on Sunny Day being in effect.
* Getting a Growth off often the first priority, unless Bulbasaur is in against something which must be dealt with this turn. As such, Bulbasaur should be brought in against something it forces out or cannot hit Bulbasaur very hard.
* Giga Drain is useful for staying healthy, but is less powerful than either Weather Ball or Sludge Bomb.
* Prediction is generally useful, as your turns of sun are greatly limited.
Team Options
========
* Diglett can trap some problematic Pokemon such as Ponyta and reliably can use Sunny Day. Diglett is especially useful as it creates opportunities for Bulbasaur to use Growth with Memento; as Diglett prevents opposing Pokemon from switching out, it can be used isolate these situations.
* Onix can use Sunny Day while getting up Stealth Rocks to augment Bulbasaur's power.
* Ponyta is a potent Sunny Day user itself.
* Charmander can find itself on any sun team due to its raw power.
* Vullaby and Timburr are helpful for their access to Defog and the general utility they offer teams. This is particularly helpful against opposing webs teams.
* Oddish and Cherubi can also act as secondary Chlorophyll sweepers, with Cherubi having access to Healing Wish to make up for not being Bulbasaur.
* Riolu is limited to more offensive teams, but can supply a priority Sunny Day thanks to Prankster.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
* An alternative EV spread of 44 Def / 156 SpA / 236 Spe with a Timid Nature is noticeably bulkier at the expense of some OHKO potential. The extra defense allows for Bulbasaur to find a few more opportunities to Growth and avoid subsequently being picked off by priority.
* Sunny Day is viable for make Bulbasaur somewhat self sufficient, but at a great cost to its offensive potential.
* Life Orb does give Bulbasaur some extra power, but largely only serves to make Bulbasaur easier to pick off with priority.
* Solar Beam doubles down on Bulbasaur's good power and does not require a Growth to be fairly threatening, but again leaves it more susceptible priority.
* Knock Off is an overall poor option but can theoretically be helpful on a potential defensive Bulbasaur set. There are significantly better Grass- Poison-types for this role however.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Ponyta**: Eviolite Ponyta is only threatened by a Bulbasaur that is able to use Growth or one running Sleep Powder. Stealth Rocks quickly limit Ponyta's ability to survive Bulbasaur's attacks. Ponyta is also significantly more threatening than other check to the entire typical sun team.
**Vullaby**: Most Vullaby sets fair well against an unboosted Bulbasaur. With the possibility of Overcoat, it even may even be immune to Sleep Powder. However if Bulbasaur is able to manage a Growth, Berry Juice Vullaby no longer survives a Weather Ball. Eviolite Overcoat Vullaby as solid of a Bulbasaur answer as they come.
**Munchlax**: With Fire Punch and only 76 Special Defense EVs Munchlax is able to answer Bulbasaur fairly reliably even after a Growth boost. Keeping hazards off of the field for Berry Juice Munchlax is ideal as then a crit is required for Growth boosted Weather Ball to knock out Munchlax.
