Huh. 500 posts isn't a lot by the standards of most Smogon veterans, but it's a bit of an insane milestone for me. I've got a fancy little moderator tag and everything now! It's been strange watching myself come to this point. I never expected Smogon to become quite as big a part of my life as it ended up becoming. I've met some of the most important people at this stage of my life here, and I've truly come to think of this as my community instead of a community I happen to be in. I somehow got nominated for, like, 3 different Smog Awards and even won best Article thanks to a collaborative project with UT that I still consider one of the best things I've contributed to the site. I also got rigged to go into the Well, but that kind of sucked please put a good poster in there next time.

To celebrate, here's an old team that with a new ban is questionably viable! I hope you enjoy! The team's named after one of my favorite bands and albums of all time <3

The Teambuilding Process

PUDDLE SPLASHERS (Primarina) @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draining Kiss
- Surf
- Calm Mind
- Psychic Noise

Magic Guard is a broken ability. People in this tier tend to forget it because it doesn't have the immediate oomph factor of primal weather or the serotonin-inducing recovery of Regenerator, but I seriously believe you can put Magic Guard on anything and it'll be good. This is a set originally by DeepFriedMagikarp, and one of my favorite mons to pilot in the tier's history. This thing manages to have insane defensive utility against threats like Roaring Moon, Zamazenta, and (formerly) Walking Wake while also threatening to sweep at the turn of a dime. Psychic Noise is a broken move in this tier, being able to deny Empoleon Roost or Desolate Land Iron Moth Morning Sun does so much for you and lets you break past some things that you have absolutely no business breaking past. Surf is being used over Sparkling Aria for PP, and Draining Kiss is being used to keep it healthy while still immensely threatening Roaring Moon.

BASILS KITE (Empoleon) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Roost
- Flip Turn
- Stealth Rock
- Surf

After deciding on Magic Guard Primarina, I decided that I wanted this team to be all about denying the opponent from making any progress with hazards. Spikes and Toxic Spikes are both broken, and letting the opponent get them up for free is a death sentence for many teams. I also wanted a solid switch-in to Earthquake users, as even physically invested Primarina is prone to being worn down by a stray EQ from Dragonite or even Swampert if it can't click Draining Kiss fast enough. I decided on Empoleon to give me some hazards of my own as well as a sturdy pivot. Instead of the typical Roar, Knock Off, or Earthquake final slot, I decided on Surf to bypass Empoleon's main issue: it's so passive all the time! With it's surprisingly high Special Attack, even an uninvested Surf heavily chunks anything thinking they're switching into Knock Off such as Great Tusk or Zamazenta, effectively serving as a semi-lure to these mons. With Walking Wake gone, you can justify using a Heatran or perhaps a Sandy Shocks here for some more varied defensive utility, but I still believe Empoleon to be one of the most underrated special walls in the tier right now, and people are going to massively disrespect it in the upcoming era of the meta.

OH MESSY LIFE (Gholdengo) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Well-Baked Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Hex
- Thunder Wave
- Recover

Gholdengo is a pretty great Pokemon. Don't have too much to say about it. Max HP and Well-Baked Body allows it to serve as the team's primary check to Ogerpon-H, but the fun part about Gholdengo is bluffing other abilities like Earth Eater. With aggressive enough predictions, it's not that hard to convince your opponent that you're Magic Guard (assuming Primarina hasn't revealed it yet) or Earth Eater/Levitate, potentially dissuading them from keeping a Steel-weak threat like Iron Boulder in or from clicking Earthquake, allowing it to soft-check Dragonite and Garchomp without even having a Ground immunity. Thunder Wave allows Gholdengo to slow down threats like Ogerpon-C and non-Tinted Latios after tanking a hit, making them far easier to answer throughout the game, while Hex is a strong attack against anything you can land a Paralysis on. This Gholdengo is walled pretty hard by Great Tusk and other Ground-types after revealing it's ability, as an unboosted Hex only does so much, but if you play your cards right this can clean an endgame even more effectively than Primarina.

:sv/great-tusk:
PLANET SHHH (Great Tusk) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Taunt

While Primarina and bulky Gholdengo are good at soft-checking a variety of physical attackers, I still didn't have a "real" physical wall nor did I have a strong Ground-type of my own. I didn't have any need for a RegenVest like Meloetta or Roaring Moon, with Primarina and Empoleon doing well enough on that end, and I also wanted a good Knock Off absorber to keep my other teammates safe from entry hazards. Given all of this, Regenerator Tusk was a no-brainer. Max HP Tusk is physically bulky enough to check most of the physical attackers that Gholdengo and Primarina can't, while still being threatening enough to force them out. Rapid Spin is useful in the event of Gholdengo or another teammate getting Knocked, and a Speed boost is also helpful in the right cases. Knock Off was picked over Close Combat or Fraud Spinner to help my upcoming special attackers break past RegenVest users like Manaphy and Swampert, while Taunt is a more niche option that's very useful for disrupting the opponent's hazard removal, recovery, set-up or more. Tusk feels a little clunky to pilot without either Bulk Up or Close Combat, but the pure disruption factor of Taunt makes it a worthy inclusion on the team. Boots were chosen over Rocky Helmet or Leftovers to make more use out of Regenerator, but if you're confident in the hazards matchup you can consider using these items instead.

LITTLE LEAGUE (Iron Moth) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Desolate Land
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fiery Dance
- U-turn
- Morning Sun
- Toxic

Toxic is broken. There's no good clerics outside of stall, very few viable Poison-types outside of Moth itself and Pecharunt, and non-WBB Steel-types don't exactly fancy switching in to STAB Fiery Dance. Iron Moth also functions as a secondary special wall, able to comfortably switch-in against Primordial Sea users like Zapdos as well as Scream Tail lacking Psychic Noise. Fiery Dance's 50% chance to make Iron Moth even stronger helps to compensate for the lack of investment, ensuring that it's still threatening neutral targets like Heatran, Mandibuzz, and Tusk. U-turn and Morning Sun do U-turn and Morning Sun things, keeping both momentum and HP in Moth's favor. Iron Moth is the most vulnerable to Knock Off on the team, and can't effectively damage Roaring Moon or other Dragon-types, so it's going to be clicking U-turn a lot versus them. Energy Ball is an option over U-turn if you're willing to sacrifice the pivoting, hitting Manaphy and especially Swampert quite hard, but Moth's pivoting is far too useful for getting teammates like Tusk and Primarina onto the field safely against switch-ins like Roaring Moon and Dragonite.

Scream Tail might be the best Pokemon in the tier right now. A fantastic Speed tier outpacing Latios and the Ogerpon formes, access to broken Psychic Noise, and Boomburst being the best Fairy-type move in the tier makes it so insanely splashable. There's not too much to say here, Scream Tail provides great offensive pressure while still having a good defensive typing as well as great team support for Empoleon and Gholdengo in Wish. Calm Mind and Protect is a toss up; on one hand, Calm Mind makes Boomburst and Psychic Noise impossible to switch in to for everything not named Heatran, but Protect is so good for ensuring Wish recovery and for scouting the opponent.
