butterfree (ss) strategy/move set

Butterfree can be an extreme pain if allowed to set up. Its ability Compound Eyes allows for use of moves such as Hurricane and Sleep Powder to be used reliably. It has some drawbacks however, with a 4x weakness to rock, so half of its health is gone if switched into stealth rocks.

Butterfree-Gmax @ Wide Lens OR Focus Sash
Ability: Compound Eyes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Sleep Powder
- Bug Buzz
- Hurricane
- Quiver Dance

The inclusion of Wide Lens increases Butterfree’s accuracy to 1.43x in conjunction with compound eyes, meaning Hurricane will never miss. Alternately, focus sash can be used, but is only viable if Butterfree is sent out first to avoid entry hazards. Tinted lens can be used as an alternate ability, but hurricane and sleep powder now can miss easily. The commonness of stealth rocks essentially nullifies sash usage, which is why wide lens is preferred. The g-max form of butterfree gives it better bulk and also allows it to gain speed through Max Airstream; however, it removes the ability to sleep opponents and quiver dance. In general, the strategy is sleeping an opponent, quiver dance, and then attack. Some drawbacks include resistances from steel and rock types, which also include some of the most impassable walls. Watch out for clear smog and haze, and try to keep your opponents asleep and your speed up.
