Can't Make Challenges or Receive Them

I've been trying to find a solution to this issue through this site and google, but I couldn't find a solution, so...

I can log onto servers and make teams just fine, but when I try to get into a battle with someone else, the battle screen won't show up.

I get the dialog box where you load teams and set rules, but when I click "Accept", it just goes back to the server's screen. And sometimes another box comes up that says:

An error occured while reading a message from the server: Connection reset

Disconnect from the server? (Try again at least once.)

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both java and Shoddy, but I just can't get it to work. Is there any way to solve this issue?

there is a find tab to find random battles which works

yeah I sometimes experience the same thing. I think it happens when the server is rather full. Like UltraSkydive said it doesn't happen in ladder battles. Otherwise you should just keep trying as it will work eventually.
