Now that we have a design, we can start names early! Like with other pre-evolution cycles, final submissions are open from the start of the thread.

This thread will be open for a maximum of two weeks (336 hours). If we have low activity towards the end, we might wrap up earlier!

-----

CAP 27 Prevo so far:

Type: Fire/Dragon

Main design:

-----

If you are inspired by the winning art design and have come up with a good and unique name you'd like the CAP to be known by, please submit your idea here and we will put it up for a vote against all other users' ideas. Final submissions must conform to the submission rules, so please read them carefully. Breaking the posting rules can also result in disqualification.

RULES:

Legal name submissions must meet the following standards
  • Names must start with a capital letter.
  • Names cannot be longer than 12 letters.
  • Names can only contain the following characters:
    • Letters A-Z
    • Numbers 1-9
    • Dash (-)
    • Apostrophe (')
    • Period (.)
    • Colon (:)
    • Space
  • No more than two capital letters can be included in the name, and capital letters cannot be consecutive.
  • A maximum of two non-letters can be included in the name, and a maximum of one non-letter of each type can be included (ie. You can't have two numbers, or two apostrophes, but you could have one number and one apostrophe)

Names will not be slated if they are:
  • completely unrelated to the design
  • the name of an existing Pokemon
  • silly (puns are fine)
  • based primarily on memes
  • meant to inflame, intimidate, or cause controversy

WIPs
Work In Progress (WIP) Names can be posted at any time for comments from the community.

No more than three WIP Names can be posted by any individual person through the entire course of the submission thread. This limit applies to ALL posts made by a single person, even if previous posts are edited or deleted. This limit is intended to curb the tendency for some submitters to spam the thread repeatedly with lists of Names. This detracts from other submissions and makes it difficult for commenters to survey the submission thread.

Do not bump your WIP names by posting them repeatedly, or making minor spelling changes of a letter or two. Bumping will result in the disqualification of all names by the offender. Editing or deleting bump posts will not prevent disqualification.

Final Submissions
Only ONE Final Submission can be made per person. Any Final Submission that does not follow the proper format will be disqualified.

Final submissions must provide one sentence (25 words maximum) explaining the etymology of the name.

Final submissions must provide a common English pronunciation. The common pronunciation can be made in whatever format you feel best conveys the pronunciation to most English speakers. (You may optionally also provide an IPA pronunciation. For information about IPA and processing words into IPA read this guide: IPA For English. There are also numerous phonetic translation tools online that can help.)

Format
Name Final Submissions must be posted exactly in the following format and in the following exact order:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on its own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • The Name submission in bold.
  • A blank line
  • A one line description of the etymology of the name or why it is appropriate for our Pokemon. (25 words maximum)
  • A blank line
  • "Pronounced: <common English pronunciation>"
  • "IPA: <IPA pronunciation>" (optional)
Below the Final Submission you can post other comments, explanations, etc.

Example final submission:
Final Submission

Syclant

A combination of "Icicle" + "Ant".

Pronounced: "SICKLE-ant"
IPA: sɪkəlænt

This name was originally submitted by Lawman on the very first CAP project. It is simple, elegant, and easy to pronounce (even if you are pronouncing it wrong), which is why it was chosen as the official name for CAP1!

Solotl

A combination of "Sol" + "Axolotl".

Pronounced: "so-LOT-el"

The original artist's main inspiration was making the prevo be sun-based in contrast to Astrolotl's night-based design, so I think it's only fair to have that reflected in the name too.

Strelotl
A combination of "Estrella/Estrela" + "Axolotl".

Pronounced: "struh-LOT-el"

Strel- derived from estrella/estrela, which means "star" in spanish and portuguese. Also sounds similar to Astrolotl.

Lyrette

A portmanteau of the words “Lyra” (a constellation) and “Bombette” (a type of firework).

Pronounced: “LEER-et”

Coronotl

Another portmanteau of the words “Corona” (as in the outer layer of the sun) and “Axolotl” (keeping in line with Astrolotl’s name). It also sounds similar to “Coronation“, which is a ceremony in which a monarch is crowned.

Pronounced: “COOR-oh-nahtl”

WIP (1/3):

Axolite

"axolotl" + "acolyte" + "light"

Pronounced: "ACK-so-lite"
IPA: æksəlaɪt

As Gravity Monkey's design is a sun-themed axolotl, I thought that a pun on the "light" it creates as well as it being Astrolotl Lite (TM) would be appropriate.

In general, though, I don't enjoy names that basically mean "baby axolotl", since those names don't let the design be its own character--instead, it's forced to be a shrunken-down version of something else.

Cintilla

A corruption of Scintilla, meaning a small spark or flash.

Pronounced: "sin-TIL-uh"
IPA: /sinˈtilə/

Imo there are other cases of evolution lines having near identical names with one just indicating size such as yanma and yanmega, and the pun here for Little->Lotl is just so obvious. That said, Axolittle -> Astrolotl doesn't make nearly as much sense as keeping Astro throughout! There's no reason for astro to be subbed out just because this mon is sun themed. If anything, it makes keeping Astro make even more sense. Astro as a prefix is generically used for outer space, but is also used specifically for stars, such as in "asterisk." The sun is a star and astro is entirely appropriate for it.

For my own submission of Cintilla, I like the idea of this just being a word, and one that already conveys the idea of being small in its own meaning :)

WIP

Nebulotl

It has to do with space and while the first part of astrolotl's name seems to suggest the whole of space, this one is only really a nebula.

WIP

Sparklitl

Based around Sparklers, which are a type of firework.
Contains Spark And lit for the flame Part and little for being smol and baby.
The way little is shortened alludes to the Spelling of axolotl and is supposed to build the connection to Astrolotls name.

Final Submission

Pyrosol

A combination of "Pyro" and "Parasol"

Pronounced: "PYRO-sol"

I wanted a name that references its fiery mantle, and I thought it kinda looks like a parasol which is both sun related and references the anatomy. It doesnt look super "star" themed yet, so I didnt want to do a name that was too star related. Imagine a bunch of Pyrosols floating up high to absorb lots of sun to evolve!

Sparka

A combination of "Spark" + "Larva"

Pronounced: "SPARK-ah"
IPA: spɑrkə

I wanted a simple and easy-to-pronounce name for the prevolution, which reflects the pre-evolution's cute and miniscule design, so I thought I'd refrain from using cumbersome letters like 'x' and 'tl'.
Since young axolotl are referred to as larvae, and the prevo's art gives off connotations of a small 'spark', I thought I'd combine the two words. Sparka also sounds very similar to 'parka', which references the almost jacket-like apparel of the pre-evolution.

Final submission

Cuteferno

I'm submitting this name because it's a portmanteau of "cute" and "inferno", considering the prevo's Fire typing and cuteness + low experience.

Pronounced: "cute-FER-noh"

Donalumna

"Don" (Relates to dinosaurs), also corruption of "Doña" (Mrs.), and "Dona" (Donut, to its "poncho"), plus Alumna (Student, also corruption of moon, "Luna").

Pronounced: do-nya-loom-nuh
IPA: doʊɲalumna

The "ñ" character is allowed as it's avaiable in main Pokémon games and so on. - oh well, edited that out... (It was originally "Doñalumna")
Anyways, this amount of Spanish (A good chunk of the terms used are taken from Spanish) seems fitting considering how easy it's to relate the design with Mexican culture and other stuff as said in the etymology, and out of the above (Namely the "Luna" (Moon) part), one can also relate it to magical girls, most notably Sailor Moon.
"Don" acts as a nice reference to its Dragon typing, while the "Dona" (Donut) corruption somewhat references to its "poncho" out of the iconic hole donuts have just like them, and "Alumna" (Student) references how it's still learning about its powers to someday evolve.
