Celebi has found itself as a fixture on many Sand teams as a sturdy Water resist and pivot. Thanks to its typing, ability, and Recover, it can take on Pokemon such as Rotom-W, Keldeo, Starmie, and Tentacruel, making it a threat to rain and sand teams. It also has Baton Pass, allowing it to pass boosts to its teammates and pivot out of Tyranitar without fearing Pursuit. In addition, it can use these attributes to be a solid Stealth Rock setter for many teams and keep them up throughout the match. However, it has some exploitable weaknesses. Celebi is walled by Steel-types which are everywhere in BW OU, which results in Celebi being forced out often. It also has a multitude of weaknesses that are easy to exploit, notably a weakness to U-turn. It is also susceptible to all types of entry hazards, particularly Spikes, necessitating a Rapid Spin user on its team.

Psychic is preferred to hit most Pokemon harder, notably dealing significant damage to Tentacruel that can be an easy Pokemon to set up on, while Giga Drain allows it to deal more damage to Pokemon such as Rotom-W and Tyranitar. Recover allows Celebi to check Pokemon such as Keldeo and Rotom-W throughout the game and allows it to potentially get off multiple Nasty Plot passes. Baton Pass is there to allow it to give boosts to its teammates and can allow it to pivot out of Tyranitar without getting Pursuited.
