there's no world where bss should have less slots then either ou or vgc
"alresdy not off to the best start but the message that follows should justify this right"

and no, it in fact does not

the main singles tier of the game
all jokes aside, wanting it in just because its the main singles tier of the game like it isnt being forced is an interesting statement but go off i guess

ykw i was still mad as shit about the world cup so i dont think i was at my most eloquent, my post still holds some truth in terms of popularity of the community and i think that it would be very beneficial for bss as a whole to have more exposure on smogon considering it gets little playtime outside of bsspl/cl as far as im aware, and 2 slots would fit well especially cause the format undeniably is a lot more active then uu or anything, but yeah that was a shit post mb o7 (edit: ive now deleted it cause im a chud)

Just wanna clarify that your hatred of the bss format that you repeated several times in this thread isn't an argument at all.

Is draft 6v6? I assume so, and if that is the case I look forward to seeing how it goes in a PL format, definitely support it.

Yes its 6v6 singles, format has been played since the release of M-A (kickoff tour on the Draft Forum) and for this tournament would likely be the same M-B board as the one featured in the upcoming DCL.

I'd like to actually propose a couple of formats instead of just defending UU. I think this tournament should be 10 slots, full stop. This allows for the most representation as well as an extra BSS, VGC, and/or OU slot, which I think this tournament needs.

Here are the optimal formats. You have both BSS and VGC represented, each with 2 slots. This allows folks from the cartridge side to have a greater opportunity to engage in high-level play. Moreover, I want a Bo3 OU slot, as it tends to be super hype and fun to build for, allowing riskier techs to be brought in and fostering greater metagame development. The way we can achieve this is seen below.

Proposed ideas:
3x Champions OU
1x Champions OU Bo3
1x Champions UU
2x Champions BSS
2x Champions VGC
1x Champions Draft

If we are confident that OU can garner a high number of signups, then this is by far the most optimal format. You give BSS another slot as well; it is one of the two ladders in Champions.

OR

2x Champions OU
1x Champions OU Bo3
1x Champions UU
2x Champions BSS
3x Champions VGC
1x Champions Draft

This slot takes away a regular OU slot and adds it to VGC, since VGC is the more popular of the two between BSS and VGC. This still allows for two BSS slots, however.

Obviously, we can do shit like add another draft slot or a UU slot rather than adding to VGC, BSS, draft, etc. It doesn't matter much as long as we are hitting 10 slots with an OU Bo3 slot.

EDIT: if 8 slots

2x Champions OU
1x Champions OU Bo3
1x Champions UU
1x Champions BSS
2x Champions VGC
1x Champions Draft

On God, if you want my most preferred format its this:

2x Champions OU
1x Champions OU Bo3
2x Champions UU
2x Champions BSS
2x Champions VGC
1x Champions Draft

It provides the most visibility across every metagame. 1 bo3 and 1 draft is standard, then we just equalize the rest. Players help each others slots prep. The least amount of stress for the managers. Moreover, the players are more heavily encouraged to communicate and build together.

100% agree with this. Also encourages people to flex into other slots and try new formats since you can always have at least one veteran in their respective format holding it down.

I Agree with What is said Here. But Vgc have a larger player base compared to other formats so vgc should have more slots.

never said it was an argument btw, just was stating my 2 cents but alr

in general i personally dont care if it gets in or not tbh, if people wanna play a format im not gonna stop them from wanting that, thats vile

Now, for an actual argument because I've been talking out my ass for a while.

For 8 slots:

I do think because VGC is more popular, it deserves a 3rd slot. Sure, it isn't the flagship metagame of the site, but it wouldn't make sense to exclude it when it is currently at it's peak. It could also bring some new faces in, but that can happen with every format.

I hate to be that person but without any bias at all, I think we can remove UU from this tour. It doesn't have a ladder and apart from a few room tours and such, not a lot of people play it in general. I'll admit I see a good amount of pings for games in it at least a few times a day, but realistically giving this slot to VGC or even OU would probably make more sense.

For 10 slots:

3 OU
3 VGC
1 Draft
2 BSS
1 UU

OU and VGC are, without question, gonna be the main formats of the tour, and it wont be close, which is why they should each get 3 slots. BSS should get 2 slots because while it isn't as popular as the others, it's the singles metagame of champions, is probably way more popular than we know, and because BSS players deserve some way to get their name out there (esp after the slander ive been throwing at the format, I'd like to change my outlook on it.)

Draft is there because well, it's draft. There's no true argument to this without my bias showing because I'm a draft player, but I think due to the fact how draft allows for very unique teambuilding, it's a good idea to include it.

And since we have 10 slots, we can give UU it's spotlight and the potential to get a ladder if the energy is there for one. With me spamming games to get xard banned, I think the format is healthy now. :Clueless:

Here's your actual argument. Sorry if this sounds backhanded or anything, I've just been typing for fun this entire time.

I would appreciate it if you didn’t derail discussion with shitposts since we are actually trying to gather community input on what tiers they would like to see for Champions PL. If you have nothing of substance to say then please don’t say anything

I see no reason to take away a slot from UU.Since VGC Bo1 and Bo3 are two completely different formats. So instead of making vgc 3 slots. why don't we add 1 or 2 more slots for Bo3 VGC. Since Both exists.

After a lot of thinking and changing my mind again and again, my final proposal is:

2x Champions OU
1x Champions OU Bo3
1x Champions UU
1x Champions BSS
2x Champions VGC
1x Champions Draft

This tournament's purpose is not only to interlink the Champions playerbase with Smogon but also to further the tiers of Champions OU and UU whilst also promoting them and I think something like this works best with a draft slot being nice due to it being a large community.

Firstly, I'd like to defend Champions UU in saying that ever since this thread has dropped there has been a massive influx in players with many people being willing to play the tier. Due to being admittedly unexplored, it has a very low barrier to entry with the only requirements being that you have to be dedicated and good at 6v6 singles and having it in the tournament will help develop the tier. Despite this though, I think two slots would be too much and could end up being uncompetitive as a result.

Mainly with this post I want to defend a Champions OU Bo3 slot with the context that most of the high level Champions OU playerbase want to see this tier come to fruition. With the metagame right now leaning towards hazard stack and offense with a plethora of strategies that would be considered "cheese" like hard rain which make defensive play harder than ever Bo1 encourages such strategies in an unhealthy way comparable to something like BW OU. With the consideration of burnout, I think having one of the Champions OU slots be Bo3 should be perfectly fine in that regard especially with most people vouching for it and likely wanting to play that tier above Bo1 for competitive sake.

Potentially you can axe a Draft slot for another BSS one but I think I'm just inclined to say that because I haven't seen Draft played in a team tournament like this before, I think the playerbase and argument is there for either or.

I'll chime in with my thoughts.

8 teams really does feel like a lot to aim for. This will be the first time most champions formats are included in a team tour so it feels a little too optimistic both in terms of interest for people signing up to manage and just general amount of slots it would imply are needed for each tier. If manager sign ups are adequate enough 8 teams is probably fine since the playoff format is just a lot better but it probably shouldn't be the expectation.

Onto the tiers as this really should dictate the number of slots in the tournament.

There really should be no resistance to any of these tiers being in

At least 2 slots of Champs OU
2 slots of VGC
1 slot of BSS

I think it should be a shoo-in but I wanna yap some to justify it

Incredible loads of bias equiped here but Draft is much more of a proven format compared to the other tiers included, even above, with a succesful individual with a decent amount of interest towards it and already succesful play in offsite Draft PL. I think two slots of it could be justified by the number of draft players that would have some interest in this tournament but I would be more than satisfied with just one slot of it

I do think 36 slots playing is too small. Lets look at other possible formats to include before looking at increasing slots of anything else

UU
- 1 slot of it seems FINE but I have a little bit of skepticism on how supported UU is gonna be mostly through how much tour play is it getting per year, how regularly will resources be maintained especially considering its only a challenge format. I view one slot of it as pretty harmless but it seems like a hard sell to have two of it over another one of the tiers mentioned above
Champs OU BO3 - I don't really see the draw for it here. The main goal for BO3 slots in team tours is getting hype MU's weekly with established top players or players that are really hot in the tier right now. Champs OU doesn't really have the legacy or enough history IMO to run a BO3 slot over just normal BO1. Issues mentioned in this thread feel like tiering issues

With that being said, heres my proposed format
Champs OU
Champs OU
VGC
VGC
BSS
Draft
UU
Another OU (preferably bo1), or another BSS could be added to make it BO8.

I think BO10 is aiming for a little too much. If we think all of another OU slot, another BSS slot, and another Draft slot could have enough interest I guess it could be fine. However, I think BO8 will make for a much more stable first edition and having 8 teams should probably be a higher priority than BO10.

After a lot of thinking and changing my mind again and again, my final proposal is:

2x Champions OU
1x Champions OU Bo3

I Agree with this.

I had Also Like to defend Champions UU. 6v6 singles also have a large player base. And Since UU already exists in teambuilder as a Ranking and it have a decent amount of pokemon in it too. It deserve to be a ladder and slots here.

3x Champions OU
1x Champions UU
2x Champions BSS
2x Champions VGC

I never favored draft in a PL so personally I wouldn't want it. See discussions of including draft in SCL. A second BSS seams more fitting, especially with the popularity of the actual Champions game and meta there could draw in a ton of players. We should also start with 6 teams and depending on the quality of manager sign ups and quantity of player sign ups we could be flexible and extend to 8.

I think 10 slots are better as proposed before.

Despite this being a new section it is still Smogon so the annoying aspects of deciding on slots are unfortunately quite present. As a disclaimer, I'm only speaking for myself and not on behalf of the mod team or leadership. An important thing that has been discussed so far is 'who is this tournament for and what is it supposed to be?' That isn't something that has a formal answer at the moment and if you ask a dozen people you'll get a dozen different answers. The answer to that question is going to heavily influence what one deems to be an appropriate number of slots and tiers.

Personally, ChampionsPL should be a more casual tour that showcases the varied metagames under the champions umbrella with a focus on inclusion and should attempt to attract players from outside the community. This is already the ethos of the section to some extent as links to both VGC and BSS can be found here and on the discord server. There has been a lot of frustrating tierbashing to read through in this thread and the discord server and I don't think that some of y'all trying to be 'rational and objective' realize that if we followed this logic then this tournament would primarily focus on VGC, BSS, and Draft with Champions OU being relegated to the minimum number of slots to avoid headaches due to the disparity in the size of the playerbase and development of the metagame.

The biggest concern I have for the tournament at the moment isn't really the tiers, but the managers. Regardless what the slots and tiers settle into there is not currently much of an overlap in playerbase and having enough managers sign up that are able to properly support their players is a concern of mine. Some people have brought up the raw number of signups, but I don't think this will be a significant issue. The tournament will have a CA prize and there are enough generally solid players that will sign up solely for that and will likely pad the numbers to where they need to be.

Tiers

Champions OU - This is the flagship tier so obviously it will be in. The question is how many slots should it get. At least two is a given, three seems fine, but above that seems pretty questionable from what I've seen.

Champions UU - Yes the tier is small and does not currently have much in the way of development. I also don't see that as a significant issue at least for this tournament. Tournaments accelerate that process and Champions UU gives me similar vibes to NDUU. A small, but dedicated playerbase that easily justifies a slot in most tournaments and is more of a tournament tier than anything. If you're against Champions UU being included, at least give them some benchmark to reach for you to consider including the tier. I'm not sure if the current state of the resources is up to par, but that is something that can easily be addressed by the council before the tour starts.

VGC - Pretty easy to justify multiple slots imo. I'm really not involved in VGC to any meaningful degree so if RauSakura would mind weighing in that would be great. Is there enough community interest at the moment?

BSS - It is pretty hard to argue against one slot. There are arguments for and against a second that I'm pretty neutral on. Regardless of what happens a second BSS slot is likely to be competing with a different tier fighting for their only slot. A second BSS slot seems justifiable, but I'm also not really in tune with BSS on Smogon specifically so can't really give much input on that.

Draft - I'm honestly not sure if there is an area on Smogon that has an equivalent Draft format that you can reasonably argue for excluding Draft. Even relatively meaningless Draft tournaments tend to have more signups than the section's flagship tour. As far as I'm aware, Draft has been very well received as a slot in every tournament they've been featured and that is increasing as time goes on. A lot of people sign up just for that slot despite the lack of the traditional mid-tour draft week which is likely annoying for Draft players. The logistics are easy for managers and hosts and at this point Draft probably should be included by default in just about every Smogon tournament where it is feasible. For reference, the Champions Draft Kickoff tour had 330+ signups. One can easily argue for multiple Draft slots, but that is pretty context dependent and I'd rather give UU a chance than a second Draft slot if it came down to it.

Doubles - This exists... eragon Schister not sure if you two are aware of this. In my experience Doubles OU folks play just about any tournament where Doubles OU is featured and always provide a good slot. Having Doubles OU + VGC in the same tour seems like a neat opportunity, but I don't know enough about the metagame or its state of development to comment.

tl;dr - Include the maximum number of slots that signups can sustain while maintaining a baseline of competitiveness. It is fine if things are not perfect in the first edition of the tour and giving some folks the opportunity to enjoy and showcase their tiers should be prioritized. The CA will attract enough people that sign up for tours purely to get one

Responding to bumbo, there definitely is plenty of interest in more team tours involving VGC, especially those with a CA prize imo. 2 slots sounds best for it since VGC players generally stick to themselves and having more than about 1/3 of teams being players who pretty much will only prep for VGC and not really help the other tiers isn't ideal although I feel that goes both ways with singles players feeling unsure about helping doubles players.

I also want to mention that despite not being as popular as VGC, I feel BSS is also worthy of having 2 slots. There are a number of good players who can flex into both and having 3 Champions OU slots (despite being the flagship format here) is too much if diversity is a big factor and afaik Champions DOU isn't particularly popular enough to warrant a slot (sorry DOU people).

Also I'm a big fan of Draft, they should definitely get a slot. So ultimately I like the list Hacker suggested but with 2 BSS slots rather than a Champions OU Bo3 slot.

I can DOU does have some decent amount of player active. Since there is no ladder i am saying from what i have seen in Tours of Doubles room whenever there is a DOU Champs Tour Players join and Not like tour is flooded with played but there is a good amount of players there. And VGC I a evergreen and always active format. I would like to point out UU Too. Yes Player base is Less. But CPL can be a good way to bring it in light and promote it more. And if it gains players in future it can be ladder too. Also we can do same with DOU Champs. Based on sign ups and players no. It can be decided weather it can be a ladder or not. Since Many DOU players Don't play VGC 4V4 they are more used to 6v6 format. That's my opinion.

The talk of Champions Doubles OU is kind of mindboggling to me for the fact that I don't think it really fulfils a purpose right now and especially so because we aren't exactly looking for more tiers to add to the list, it would make a lot more sense to add another BSS slot.

Why do I think Champions Doubles OU shouldn't be added? First of all, they don't have sample teams, nor any VR, NOR A COUNCIL FOR THAT MATTER. Even worse, the tier is quite literally just Champions VGC but unbalanced. You know how Basculegion is insane in VGC right now? Imagine it with an even harder hitting Last Respects. Also, I think Item Clause is pretty healthy and the removal of Champions mechanics like that also makes it not fit into the tour with Champions OU and Champions UU embracing this feature along with the level limit of 50.

The teams used will quite literally just be what is good in Champions VGC right now bar teams with dual megas due to having to bring all of your team. Not only is this just basically another Champions VGC slot but a worse metagame where cheese like Espathra will probably be even stronger which nobody who has a chance of being drafted for Champions VGC would ever want to play.

The primary purpose of Doubles OU is to not have regulations and to instead allow every Pokémon but have tiering that makes it balanced. I think this is cool. However, Champions VGC is already made to be balanced and you have the same selection of Pokémon in both.

Champions Doubles OU could potentially be considered in future instalments of this tournament but it would first need to have:

A purpose, a council, any semblance of resources, an actual playerbase, bans that make the tier have a purpose and not ones that currently just feel randomly restrictive and a ladder would probably be nice.

This post isn't tier bashing, Champions Doubles OU GENUINELY just has zero purpose and is just worse than Champions VGC.

I'd like to echo your original point that this is a new format for Smogon. Because it is the first team tournament for the section, we cannot predict signup numbers with precision, as there is no data to base it on. That said, I think it is paramount that we first decide how many teams we want to field. This will help determine the number of slots each team will have. My reasoning is that talking about slots clearly isn't going anywhere, since we all have the same ideas; they just look a tad different. I think there are two options that make sense based on the number of teams.

OPTION 1:
If we choose to field 6 teams, we should aim for a Bo10.

This provides the most flexibility within the tiers, ensuring every metagame has the greatest opportunity for development. It makes my original formatting proposal possible. However, leaders can decide how to format it afterward.

2x Champions OU
1x Champions OU Bo3
1x Champions UU
2x Champions BSS
2x Champions VGC
1x Champions Draft

This is 9 slots. We can collectively decide on the last slot later.

OPTION 2:
If we choose to field 8 teams, we should aim for a Bo8.

This allows the most players to be drafted, ensuring the most games are in play. This allows us to just do the original format proposed, and is by far the easiest solution. It allows for the maximum number of signups while maintaining the most amount of competitiveness, which is what bumboclaat mentioned should be the goal.

2x Champions OU
1x Champions UU
2x Champions BSS
2x Champions VGC
1x Champions Draft

This is my preferred formatting for 8 slots. Leaders can mix and match as necessary.

EDIT: If 10 slots, I am not opposed to including DOU. It'll end up being a leader decision, though I'm sure they'll have enough signups to justify the addition.

There will be enough signups to easily fill however many vgc slots you want to put in, but I think frankly you're not going to get particularly high quality signups. DPL recently included VGC, and honestly the amount of quality sign ups for that (for vgc) we're lower than I think was hoped despite the communities already being well connected. A single custom avatar just isn't that enticing of a prize, and the level of advertising and communication to the community just isn't there. Getting the sign ups for stuff like NPA requires us to really go out of the way in promotion, and we have a higher prize + NPA is already well known in the community. I think the tour sounds really fun, but I just can't reasonably say you'll get a ton of quality signups.

I also would like to echo some of the concerns about managers and organization. All of the tiers suggested are really disparate, even those that are still nominally overlapping. Are we confident there will be managers that can handle all these? One of the main things that concerns me with including VGC in a tour like this is that I want to make sure players from my community are treated well, and I feel like thats in no way guaranteed with how this is organized and what that says of the potential managers.

Edit: I would also like to say the fact that no one on the VGC team was even asked about this in planning, and we only learned because Rau was pinged in the middle of this thread, concerns me further.
