Chansey (0/3)

take a chance

Overview
########
-Eviolite boosts her defenses, making her the most bulky special wall in the game.
-Can support the team with Wish and Heal Bell.
-Chansey's main advantage over Blissey is her decent physical bulk, allowing her to take on mixed special attackers and Psyshock users better.
-Lacking Leftovers makes Chansey easily worn down from passive damage.
-Chansey has is a slouch offensively, and her physical defense is still lacking, she is very easily countered and checked.
-Outside of Blissey, Chansey faces competition as a special wall against Sylveon who is also formidable special wall with the unique Fairy-typing with decent defense. Additionally, Assault Vest Users like Tyranitar and Goodra compete as special tanks.

Supporting Special Wall
########
name: Supporting Special Wall
move 1: Soft-boiled
move 2: Wish / Heal Bell
move 3: Toxic / Thunder Wave
move 4: Seismic Toss
ability: Natural Cure
item: Eviolite
nature: Bold / Calm
evs: 180 HP / 252 Def / 76 SDef

Moves
========
-Soft-Boiled is her primary recovery move.
-The next slot is for her supporting options. Wish can heal teammate's health right up using her massive HP, while Heal Bell cures the team of status.
-If using Wish, Protect is an option over Soft-boiled to still reliably recover while also scouting the opponents moves and stalling. However, Soft-boiled is usually preferred for the ability to instantly recover health, as Chansey can be worn easily down.
-Stealth Rock is another support option, if your team needs it. Chansey is actually quite a good Stealth Rock setter against special attackers, however she will be hard pressed to set up against physically based offensive teams.
-Toxic and Seismic Toss are Chansey's main tools to wear down or status opposing Pokemon.
-Alternatively, Thunder Wave can be used over Toxic to cripple incoming Pokemon like Lucario, and to spread paralysis. However, without Toxic Chansey will be unable wear down some threats like Volcarona and Manaphy.
-If your team needs both Wish and Heal Bell support Chansey can run both, if you forgo her attacking options: Toxic and Siesmic Toss, over them. However this will leave Chansey unable to wall some threats, such as Heatran if Chansey does not have Seismic Toss. Your team will need alternative methods to deal with these Pokemon then.

Set Details
========

-Eviolite gives Chansey a boost in her defenses and it a required item. Without it Blissey outclasses her.
-The listed EVs give Chansey solid mixed bulk, allowing her to take hits on both sides.
-A Bold nature gives Chansey more of a defensive edge, allowing her to take hits on her physical side better such as Choice Specs Latios Psyshock.
-A Calm nature gives her a more specially defensive edge, allowing her to combat of special powerhouses like Vocarona, Manaphy, and Landorus-I better.
-Alternatively, fully physically defensive spread of 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef allows Chansey to avoid a 2HKO from Choice Specs Latios's Psyshock after rocks, but leaves her more vulnerable to special powerhouses.
-Solid investment into defense is necessary for any Chansey set, or else she is horrendously weak physically and nearly OHKOed by moves like Pursuit.
-The most specially bulky Chansey should ever be is 112 HP / 252 Def / 144 Calm, which avoids a 2HKO from Spec Latios Psyshock and minimizes Nasty Plot Thundurus's odds of 2HKOing Chansey with Focus Blast.

Usage Tips
========

-Most special attackers can't touch Chansey, so she can come in on them very easily, and use the opportunity to support the team or combat them.
-Against more powerful special attackers such as Manaphy, Chansey will need to immediately act against them to avoid a sweep.
-Because Chansey has no leftovers, you have to keep her health up by recovering amply and keeping hazards off the field to avoid being worn down.
-People often underestimate Chansey's raw bulk, she can actually take some stronger physical hits like Outrage from Garchomp. This may help you out in a pinch, surprise checking a physical attacker.
-Against better players, Wish supporting can be predictable, and they will attack or check the incoming Pokemon. You may have to fake out Wish a few times in order to safely switch in the Pokemon to get Chansey's Wish.

Team Options
========

-In general, physical walls are great partners for Chansey, taking on her physical threats.
-Landorus-T, Gliscor, Slowbro, and RestTalk Gyarados are all solid physical walls who also resist Chansey's Fighting-type weakness.
-Chansey greatly appreciates Rapid Spin or Defog support, as she is easily worn down by passive damage.
-Skarmory is a solid partner, supporting with either Defog or Spikes, as well as being a solid physical wall. Together they form a solid defensive core, covering both sides of the attacking spectrum.
-Tentacruel resists Fighting-type attackers and can check a variety of dangerous Pokemon to Chansey like Ageislash and Scizor.
-In general Rapid Spinners such as Forretress and Starmie, or Defog users like Malibuzz and Zapdos, are decent teammates.
-A Grass-type like Trevant, Mega-Venusaur, Gourgiest, Roserade, and Amoonguss are often a critical teammate checking dangerous Pokemon like Breloom, Azumarill, as well as taking repeated hits from Rotom-W.
-Heatran or other Genesect checks like Charizard-X will generally have to be teammates with Chansey, as Genesect is a powerful mixed special attacker which Chansey cannot counter.
-A lot of Chaney's teammates will depend on what support she has, Wish support will be appreciated for walls like Heatran who cannot heal themselves, while Heal Bell support is great for Rest-talkers like Gyarados. Heal Bell will cure Gliscor's toxic healing, so it is advisable as a teammate with Heal Bell.
-Generally, Chansey will not be a good choice on a sandstorm team, losing health from passive damage. If you are finding you need Hippowdon or Tyranitar for support, Blissey is probably a better option as a Pokemon.

Other Options
########

-Counter has some use of Chansey thanks to her massive HP, allowing her to 1HKO physical attackers who hit her in return. However, it is vulnerable to set-up sweepers, and does little in actually supporting the team.
-Skill Swap is a niche option to steal opposing abilities, allowing Blissey to check Magic Guard Reuniclus, Clefable, and Poison Heal Gliscor.
-Chansey can support teams with Gravity.
-She can mess with Charm and Sing, but Chansey has far better things to do.

Checks & Counters
########

**Hard Counters**:
-Poison Heal Gliscor and Breloom completely counter Chansey, the being able to wear her down and 1HKO her with Focus Punch respectively.
-Boosting special attackers which cannot be worn down counter Chansey, boosting up and eventually KOing her. Calm Mind Clefable and Reuniclus are immune to Toxic and can heal up lost health from Siesmic Toss and will eventually get boosted enough to 2HKO. Chesto-rest Volcarona, Rain Dance Manaphy, and Calm Mind Jirachi work similarly.
-Kelfki, Ferrothorn, Forretress take all of her attacks fine and can set up Spikes on Chansey.
-Opposing Blissey and Chansey are themselves counters. They can wear down Chansey with Toxic and take the opportunity to support their team.
-Ageislash is immune to Seismic Toss and Toxic and can only be statused by the uncommon Thunder Wave.
-Excadrill, Mawile, and Scizor can all switch in relatively safely and stomach a Seismic Toss. Mawile and Scizor do not might Thunder Wave paralysis that much.
-Most Chansey sets can't touch Gengar, but Gengar can't do much in return either, and can use the opportunity to support their team.

**Physical Pokemon in General**:
-Chansey still has a weak physical side, and strong physical Pokemon can KO her if they can switch in safely.
-Lucario is usually safe switching in, it takes Seismic Toss well enough, but can be crippled by the uncommon Thunder Wave.
-Other Fighting-types like Breloom, Conkeldurr, Infernape, and Terrakion can 0HKO Chansey with their STAB super-effect attacks.
-Choice Band users
-Raw offensive power from the likes of Azumarill, Diggersby and Kyurem-B.
-Chansey will be likely switch out against boosting physical attackers like Garchomp and Dragonite.

**Cutting Through to the Defense**:
-Some special attackers can cut through Chansey and hit her hard on her physical side through the moves Psyshock and Secrete Sword.
-Strong Psyshock users such as Latios can check Chansey.
-Keldeo can outright 2HKO Chansey with Secrete Sword.

**Knock Off**:
-Chansey relies heavily on Eviolite to be a decent wall. If it is knocked off she will lose much of her use and be much more easily checked and countered.

**Shutting Chansey Down**:
-Taunt users like Sableye and Jellicent can shut her down and slowly wear her down with Willow-Wisp burns.
-Tricking a choice itemChansey will not only leave her without Eviolite, but shut her down and make her an ineffective wall.

**Trapping**:
-Pursuit Tyranitar
-Dugtrio
-Gothitelle

Yeah I am, I have been testing out Chansey lot to pin down some exact play differences between Blissey and Chansey, as well as seeing what EV spread is actually the best in play.

I will get this QC ready later today or tomorrow.

Oh sorry about procrastinating this again, but before I finish, I wanted to post the rational of the listed EV spread I have.

Simply put: overall a 180 HP / 252 Def / 76 Spread has decent special and physical bulk, stopping most of the time special threats like
-Volarcona
-Landorus-I
-Manaphy

All while still taking hits on the physical side like Choice Specs Latios Psyshock.

Some of these vary between 2HKO and 3HKO depending on if there are stealth rocks are up or if the nature is Bold or Calm. Exactly what you need to cover exactly and how bulky you want it to be on either side is up to the user.

A physical spread isn't terrible though, it does about a 2HKO from Psyshock Latios after rocks, but outside of that, its special bulk is seriously wanting. IMO it should just be a mentioned EV option even though it seems to be the favorite spread of other Chansey users.

Here are the raw calcs

A full physically defensive spread
+6 252 SpA Manaphy Surf vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 313-369 (44.46 - 52.41%) -- 17.58% chance to 2HKO (guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock)
252 SpA Choice Specs Latios Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 261-307 (37.07 - 43.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 308-363 (43.75 - 51.56%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO (guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock)
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 283-335 (40.19 - 47.58%) -- 54.69% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

The listed spread: Bold
+6 252 SpA Manaphy Surf vs. 180 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 291-343 (42.41 - 50%) -- 0.39% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Latios Psyshock vs. 180 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 261-307 (38.04 - 44.75%) -- 4.69% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 180 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 286-337 (41.69 - 49.12%) -- guaranteed 3HKO (81.64% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock)
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Focus Blast vs. 180 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 265-315 (38.62 - 45.91%) -- 16.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

The listed Spread: Calm
+6 252 SpA Manaphy Surf vs. 180 HP / 76+ SpD Eviolite Chansey: 265-313 (38.62 - 45.62%) -- 14.84% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Choice Specs Latios Psyshock vs. 180 HP / 252 Def Eviolite Chansey: 283-334 (41.25 - 48.68%) -- guaranteed 3HKO (75.78% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock)
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 180 HP / 76+ SpD Eviolite Chansey: 261-308 (38.04 - 44.89%) -- 5.47% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Focus Blast vs. 180 HP / 76+ SpD Eviolite Chansey: 242-286 (35.27 - 41.69%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

I am perfectly happy to accept other input from other Chansey users on this, but I do feel that the listed spread should be something in this range like this.

If you are wondering, a Calm version of the physically defensive spread is inefficient, and is outclassed by 2 other EV spreads.

In terms of overall stat points, the most efficient EV spread for both blobs is 240HP / 252Def / 16SpD Calm, it avoids the 2HKO from Choice Specs Latios Psyshock if Stealth Rock is absent. Not sure if this is important enough over current EV spreads but the option is there.

How? This spread is actually inefficient, take these stats for example:

+6 252 SpA Manaphy Surf vs. 240 HP / 16+ SpD Eviolite Chansey: 280-331 (39.94 - 47.21%)
252 SpA Choice Specs Latios Psyshock vs. 240 HP / 252 Def Eviolite Chansey: 283-334 (40.37 - 47.64%)

I can create a spread with roughly the same special bulk, but more physical bulk (60 HP / 252 Def / 196 SpD Bold)
+6 252 SpA Manaphy Surf vs. 60 HP / 196 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 262-309 (39.93 - 47.1%)
252 SpA Choice Specs Latios Psyshock vs. 60 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 261-307 (39.78 - 46.79%)

Around this area of special defensiveness Bold nature is superior to a Calm nature, only the most specially bulky spreads can run an efficient Calm spread (I believe somewhere around 212 HP Calm spreads become inefficient, although I don't feel like messing with that right now).

Also, several of the EV spreads mentioned in the OP avoid the 2HKO.

Basically: what does 60 HP / 252 / 196 Bold cover in particular cover that 180 HP / 252 / 76, Bold / Calm don't?
