Choice Specs Magearna is an extremely powerful wallbreaker in the current STABmons metagame. The combination of Moonblast and Volt Switch provides wide neutral and super-effective coverage while its typing and stats give it excellent power and bulk. Soul-Heart allows Magearna to snowball often leading to unprepared or chipped teams losing multiple Pokemon attempting to check Magearna. Its access to Volt Switch means Magearna is an excellent momentum-stealer, also picking up chip on many of its would-be counters.

Aura Sphere is used to hit Ferrothorn, which can otherwise tank any hit from Magearna well, allowing it to safely scout or counter Magearna, although Strength Sap does not heal well repeatedly if Ferrothorn tries to stay in for long. Shadow Ball allows Magearna to hit Marowak-Alola, otherwise its most prominent counter, as well as Aegislash. Trick allows Magearna to cripple defensive or physically oriented Pokemon such as Blissey or Marowak-Alola. Modest is run over Timid as the power increase is notable, especially when chipping opponents with Volt Switch, and there are few relevant Pokemon that land in the intermediary speed tiers.

Magearna pairs well with Pokemon such as Rillaboom that can help take on the Ground types that threaten to block its Volt Switches while helping to chip down Pokemon such as Ferrothorn, Excadrill, and Marowak-Alola. Rillaboom's Grassy Surge also protects Magearna from Earthquakes and provides minor amounts of recovery. Other good partners include Pokemon such as Cinderace and Obstagoon, which can capitalize on the momentum Magearna generates and the switches it forces.

Amoonguss is by far the best counter to Specs Magearna. It takes very little from any of the main coverage options, especially with Assault Vest, and can function well when Tricked. Lightningrod Marowak-Alola is extremely punishing to Magearna lacking Shadow Ball, although Trick removing Thick Club is terrible for Marowak. Excadrill and Ferrothorn both counter non-Aura Sphere Magearna. Blissey and Chansey both easily tank any move but hate being Tricked. Slowking and Toxapex both counter Magearna but Volt Switch will outdamage Regenerator healing. Running Protect or similar moves to scout Specs Magearna's moves and letting it lock itself in is extremely helpful in dealing with it. Magearna is fairly slow, so revenge killing it is often easier than tanking its hits, although its bulk and sublime defensive typing can make KOing it difficult if it is not chipped first.

If Magearna is being run with Sticky Web support then Timid is an option to outpace threats such as Terrakion and Alakazam.* Fleur Cannon can be used in place of Moonblast for more initial power against targets that force Magearna out, such as Marowak-Alola, but loses out on the snowballing potential of Soul-Heart in addition to the reduced reliability from the accuracy and PP drop.

Notes and qs:
- I don't like this line. Trying to get across that Ferrothorn needs to be actively attacking or crippling Magearna in this exchange because it has limited recovery and can't just like sit there setting Spikes, but I kinda messed it up IMO.
- Honestly... is Timid worth it on Webs? Terrak is a pretty big deal. Is Keldeo? Not really. Gengar is banned. Cinderace runs Boots. Alakazam is shit on by Mage. Dugtrio is uncommon. So is Durant.
Is Terrak worth it by itself? Or am I underrating the other stuff? IDK. Should I even mention Webs, I've seen them like once since the Wicked Blow ban.
- Paragraph about counters is SUPER listy. It's a list. Honestly it would be easier to read as bullets. Should it be made to flow better?

Specs Mage hit hard and is tanky
Volt Switch pivot
Moonblast primary STAB
Aura Sphere for Ferro
Shadow Ball for Maro-A and Aegi
Trick hurts Chansey and Blissey in particular, alongside most other defensive or physically oriented Pokemon.

Maro-A major roadblock. Amoonguss best wall. Slowking and Pex can eat any one hit but cannot take repeated Volt Switches and don't rly like Trick.
Pairs well with Rillaboom because eq weak and can break through stuff like Ferro
Fleur Cannon can be used over Moonblast to deal bigger one-off damage, especially against targets such as Marowak-Alola which force it out, but ruins Soul-Heart's snowballing potential.
Runs Modest for maximum power, no notable Speed tiers Timid reaches. If run on webs Timid can be used to outpace Terrakion, Alakazam, and others.

more to come and obv ill make it look nicer

Choice Specs Magearna is a powerful tank, wallbreaker, cleaner, and pivot. Its excellent bulk and fantastic typing allow it to check many threatening Pokémon such as Alakazam, Snom, and Urshifu-Single-Strike. Choice Specs gives it exceptional power behind its moves, allowing it to threaten the majority of the metagame with Moonblast and Volt Switch alone. Soul-Heart allows Magearna to play the role of a late-game cleaner, punishing sacks and potentially creating a snowball effect. Aura Sphere allows it to cover several Steel types including Ferrothorn and Excadrill, while Shadow Ball is its best tool for quickly and safely removing Marowak-Alola and Aegislash. Trick lets it cripple Pokemon such as Blissey or Assault Vest Amoonguss, which counter it regardless of coverage. Fleur Cannon can be run over Moonblast in order to gain more one-off power, especially against offensive threats such as Cinderace, but prevents Magearna from effectively utilizing Soul-Heart and can lose against bulkier opponents with recovery or make it set-up bait.

Magearna is easily chipped, and as such pairs well with other pivots. Toxapex notably punishes many of the threats that force Magearna out. Magearna also forms an excellent core with Rillaboom thanks to their shared checks bring worn down by Magearna, while Rillaboom provides passive recovery and mitigated Earthquake power. Magearna strongly appreciates excellent hazard support. Stealth Rock enables it to wear down or KO a number of opponents much more easily than without, and as such allies who can set hazards and dissuade removal such as Ferrothorn and again Toxapex are good partners.
