1v1 Clefable [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2]

[OVERVIEW]

Clefable acts as an anti-metagame wall that can beat even the most formidable of setup Pokemon in 1v1. Using Psychium Z, it can opt to boost either of its defensive stats with Z-Magic Coat or Z-Reflect, allowing it to beat common threats like Mega Charizard X and Y, Mega Gyarados, Dragonite, and non-Gunk Shot Greninja. Its powerful ability Unaware allows it to tackle Pokemon that might try to set up and break through its defenses like Mega Charizard X and Landorus-T. However, despite its good defenses Clefable can still fall prey to powerful super effective attacks from the likes of Mega Metagross, Naganadel, and Genesect. Furthermore, while Unaware ignores the stat boosts of enemies, Clefable's own defenses can still be lowered, allowing Pokemon like Magnezone, Aegislash, and Nihilego to beat it. Finally, some attacks like Choice Band Victini's V-create and Porygon-Z's Breakneck Blitz can be too much for Clefable to handle, even with defensive boosts.

[SET]
name: Defensive Z-Move
move 1: Magic Coat
move 2: Reflect
move 3: Moonlight
move 4: Moonblast / Seismic Toss
item: Psychium Z
ability: Unaware
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Magic Coat in conjunction with Psychium Z allows Clefable to boost its Special Defense by 2 stages at +4 priority, allowing it to beat special attackers such as non-Gunk Shot Greninja, Mega Charizard Y, and Choice Scarf Porygon-Z. Reflect in conjunction with Psychium Z allows Clefable to cut incoming damage by two-thirds, beating strong physical attackers such as Mega Charizard X, Mega Gyarados, Landorus-T, and Garchomp. Moonlight gives access to reliable recovery and can make the Mega Charizard Y matchup more reliable by allowing Clefable to recover 66% instead of 50% in sun. Moonblast provides Clefable with a solid STAB attack that hits surprisingly hard, taking out Mega Gyarados, Kommo-o, and Zygarde. Seismic Toss is an alternative that hits Fire-type targets like Mega Charizard Y, Heatran, and Volcarona, but can't hit Ghost-types like Mega Sableye.

Set Details
========

252 HP and 236 Defense EVs with a Bold nature allow Clefable to survive two Flare Blitzes from maximum Attack Adamant Mega Charizard X after a Z-Reflect. 20 Special Defense EVs give Clefable a better chance against Tapu Lele and Porygon-Z. Unaware allows Clefable to beat Pokemon that might try to boost up to overcome Clefable's defenses like Mega Charizard X, Greninja, Zygarde, Garchomp, and Landorus-T. Psychium Z turns Reflect and Magic Coat into their corresponding Z-Moves, making for massive Defense and Special Defense boosts, respectively.

Usage Tips
========

Boost Clefable's Defense using Z-Reflect against attackers like Garchomp and Landorus-T, and boost its Special Defense using Z-Magic Coat against special attackers like Greninja and Choice Scarf Porygon-Z; then, attack the opposing Pokemon while recovering to keep out of range of a critical hit if possible. Against status users like Porygon2, Mega Gardevoir, and Chansey, Magic Coat can be used to let Clefable avoid taking debilitating effects such as Toxic and Taunt. Against mixed attackers such as Zeraora and Mega Diancie, use Reflect turn one followed by Z-Magic Coat, as this is the only way to boost both Special Defense and Defense.

Team Options
========

Fire-types like Mega Charizard X and Y, Victini, and Heatran make great partners for Clefable, dealing with the Steel- and Poison-types like Mega Metagross, Naganadel, and Magearna that Clefable struggles with while Clefable covers their common weaknesses to Mega Gyarados, Donphan, Landorus-T, and Primarina. FEAR Pokemon like Aron do well with Clefable, as they can typically deal with the linear attackers like Victini, Meloetta, and stall Necrozma that Clefable is weak to, while Clefable eliminates threats like Will-O-Wisp Mega Charizard, Mega Gyarados, and Garchomp. Specialized Taunt users like Whimsicott and Mega Gyarados make great teammates, covering opposing Taunt users like Deoxys-S and Mew that stall out Clefable, who offsets their weaknesses to attackers like Mega Charizard Y and Tapu Lele.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Charge Beam can be used in place of Moonblast to beat foes like Mega Slowbro and Magearna, but such a set loses out on Moonblast's strong neutral coverage and automatically loses to Ground-types.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Very Strong Attackers**: Clefable needs a turn to set up, and in this time very strong or super effective attacks can KO or damage it to a point where even after it sets up it will be KOed before it has a chance to recover. Very powerful attackers like Choice Band Victini and Porygon-Z can outmuscle Clefable.

**Unaware Bypassers**: Pokemon that can somehow bypass Clefable's Unaware or defensive boosts are solid checks. Laser Focus users like Meloetta and Raikou do well, as critical hits render Clefable's boosts useless. Metal Sound users like Aegislash and Magnezone can negate Clefable's stat boosts to land devastating hits. Pokemon like Mega Sableye and Kyurem can reduce Clefable's Special Attack and stall out its meager PP.

**Super Effective Attackers**: Clefable can only boost up to a certain point with its status moves. Thus, super effective STAB attacks from Pokemon like Naganadel, Nihilego, Mega Metagross, Kartana, and Choice Specs Genesect can prove overwhelming for Clefable's defenses.

**Other Stall**: Clefable is weak to other stall Pokemon that can outstall it, as most of its moves (especially its recovery options) have relatively few PP. Foes like Type: Null, Mega Slowbro, Registeel, Necrozma, and to a certain extent Magearna can all PP stall Clefable at very little risk. Pokemon that use SubSeed like Serperior and Venusaur can also stall out Clefable given Moonlight's low PP.

**Taunt**: Taunt users like Mega Gardevoir, Tapu Fini, and Kee Berry Mew can beat Clefable by restricting its recovery but must be careful they don't fall prey to Magic Coat.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Clefable acts as an anti-meta wall that can beat even the most formidable of setup Pokemon in 1v1.
  • If Clefable survives to use Z-Reflect, it can wall almost every physical attacker in the tier. This allows it to beat Pokemon that are unable to overcome its solid bulk in one turn, such as Mega-Gyarados , Dragonite, and Garchomp.
  • Clefable's access to Z-Magic Coat gives it a way to boost its Special Defense by 2 stages at +4 priority, allowing it to beat strong special attackers like non-Gunk Shot Greninja, Charizard-Mega-Y, and Primarina.
  • Its powerful ability Unaware allows it to tackle Pokemon that might try to set up and break through Clefable's defenses like Belly Drum or Dragon Dance Mega-Charizard-X and Swords Dance Landorus-Therian.
  • Despite its defenses Clefable can still fall prey to powerful super-effective attacks from the likes of Metagross-Mega, Naganadel, and Genesect. And, while Unaware ignores stat boosts of enemies, Clefable's own defenses can still be lowered allowing Pokemon like Metal Sound Magnezone, Metal Sound Aegislash, and Nihilego Nihilego doesn't need Acid Spray to beat Clefable, 0 SpA Nihilego Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 20 SpD Clefable: 270-318 (68.5 - 80.7%), consider choosing a different special attacker where stat dropping is relevant. to beat it. Finally, some attacks like Choice Band Victini's V-Create or Porygon-Z's Z-Hyper Beam can be too much for Clefable to handle, even with boosts.

  • Reflect with conjunction with Psychium Z allows Clefable to cut incoming damage by two-thirds, beating strong physical attackers such as Choice Band Garchomp banded Iron Tail wins but its sorta an unset. you can choose to mention it if you want, Mega-Charizard-X, Mega-Gyarados, Landorus-Therian, and Mega-Blaziken.
  • Moonlight gives access to reliable recovery and can gain reliability in the Mega-Charizard-Y matchup, recovering 75% instead of 50% (Soft-Boiled is incompatible with Unaware).
  • Moonblast provides Clefable solid STAB which hits surprisingly hard, taking out hitting Mega-Gyarados, Kommo-o, and Zygarde super effectively. 0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 44 SpD Gyarados-Mega: 152-180 (38.6 - 45.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO, not accurate to say it "takes out" MGyara.
  • Seismic Toss is an alternative that hits targets like targets that resist Moonblast, such as Mega-Diancie, Heatran, and Volcarona but misses out on Ghost-types. those specific threats aren't really the reasons to bring SToss, just examples of an archetype of mon that SToss is better against. Replace Mega-Diancie with something like non-Choice Band Victini?

Set Details
========

  • 252 HP and 236 Def EVs with a Bold nature allow Clefable to survive 2 Flare Blitzes from max Attack Adamant Charizard-Mega-X why is this relevant if you're clicking Z-Reflect on Turn 1?
  • 20 Special Defense gives Clefable a better chance against Tapu Lele and Porygon-Z.
  • Unaware beats Pokemon who might try to boost up to overcome Clefable's defenses like Charizard-Mega-X, Zygarde, Garchomp, and Landorus-Therian mention what moves each mon uses to boost
  • Psychium Z turns Reflect and Magic Coat into their Z forms, allowing for massive Defense and Special Defense boosts respectively.

Usage Tips
========

  • On turn one, if your opponent is a special attacker, use Z-Magic Coat to boost your Special Defense.
  • If they're a physical attacker, use Z-Reflect.
  • Then, use Moonlight to recover to where you won't get 2HKOed by the opponent.
  • From there, it's just a matter of alternating between attacking and healing back up until the opponent has fainted.
  • Against status users, Magic Coat can be used to bounce them back and let Clefable avoid taking otherwise gamebreaking game-losing effects such as Toxic or Taunt.
  • Against mixed attackers such as Diancie, use Reflect turn one followed by Z-Magic Coat, as this is the only way to boost both Special Defense and Defense. Give advice on what to click vs Charizard and Victini, i.e mons where physical or special, but not both, even if the advice is just "Try to read their set on preview."

Team Options
========

  • Fire-types like Mega-Charizard, Victini, and Heatran make great partners for Clefable, dealing with the Steel- and Poison-types like Metagross-Mega, Naganadel, and Magearna only one of these is Poison types, I'm not convinced that saying those fire-types beat Poisons is a good idea, especially when they also lose to the other viable poison-type, Nihilego. Additionally, Magearna doesnt even carry Steel stab, it beats Clefable because of Unaware. I think you should reconsider which mons you mention that Fire-types help with. that Clefable struggles with while Clefable covers common weaknesses of Mega-Gyarados, Donphan, Landorus-Therian, and Primarina.
  • FEAR Pokemon like Aron do well with Clefable as they can typically deal with the linear attackers like Victini, Meloetta, and Necrozma that Clefable is weak to, which Clefable eliminates common threats like Will-O-Wisp Mega-Charizard, Mega-Gyarados, and Garchomp.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • No other options are available for Clefable, as every move on this set is essential to how the set functions. are there other viable EVs? maybe a specially defensive set?

Checks and Counters
===================

**Strong/Super Effective Attackers**: Clefable needs a turn to set up, and in this time very strong or super-effective attacks can KO it or damage it to a pint where even after it sets up it will die before it has a chance to recover. These threats range from Choice Band Victini, Kartana, and Gunk Shot Hoopa to Metagross-Mega, Naganadel, and Specs Genesect.

**Other Stall**: Clefable is weak to other stall users that can out-stall Clefable as most of its moves (especially its recovery options) have relatively little PP. Users like Type:Null, Slowbro-Mega, Registeel, Necrozma, and to a certain extent Magearna can all just PP stall Clefable at very little risk.

**Taunt**: Taunt users like Mega-Gardevoir, Tapu Fini, and Kee Berry Mew can beat Clefable by restricting its recovery but must be careful they don't fall prey to Magic Coat.

  • After boosting the appropriate defense stat, attack your opponent while recovering to keep out of range of a critical hit (if possible).

  • Against mixed attackers such as Zeraora and Mega Diancie, use Reflect turn one followed by Z-Magic Coat, as this is the only way to boost both Special Defense and Defense.
  • (252 Atk Diancie-Mega Diamond Storm vs. 252 HP / 236+ Def Clefable: 169-201 (42.8 - 51%) -- 3.9% chance to 2HKO. Doesn't feel like Diancie is much of a threat, you tank two diamond storms anyway so may as well just use Z-Magic Coat)
  • Avoid sending it out against Pokemon that can outstall Clefable like Slowbro Mega or Type:Null, as Clefable's offesnive capabilities leave something to be desired.
  • Psyshock Tapu Lele can be especially problematic as it ca bypass both defense boosts from the use of a Z-Move. (This is semi true but as Clef has Unaware and is Def invested, Lele actually can't do much to Clef. You just stall out terrain turns. only issue is if they're Taunt)

Team Options
========

  • Fire-types like Mega Charizard X and Y, Victini, and Heatran make great partners for Clefable, dealing with the Steel- and Poison-types like Metagross-Mega, Naganadel, and Magearna that Clefable struggles with while Clefable covers common weaknesses of Mega-Gyarados, Donphan, Landorus-Therian, and Primarina.
  • FEAR Pokemon like Aron do well with Clefable as they can typically deal with the linear attackers like Victini, Meloetta, and stall Necrozma (photon geyser kills aron dead) that Clefable is weak to, which Clefable eliminates common threats like Will-O-Wisp Mega-Charizard, Mega-Gyarados, and Garchomp.
  • Specialized Taunt users like Whimsicott and Mega Gyarados make great teammates, covering opposing taunt users like Deoxys-Speed and Mew that might want to stall out Clefable.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Charge Beam can be used in place of Moonblast to beat foes like Mega Slowbro and Magearna, but loses out the strong neutral coverage and auto-loses to Ground-types.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Very Strong Attackers**: Clefable needs a turn to set up, and in this time very strong or super-effective attacks can KO it or damage it to a point where even after it sets up it will die before it has a chance to recover. Very powerful attackers like Choice Band Victini and Porygon-Z can outmuscle Clefable. Laser Focus users like Meloetta are also good checks, as crits render Clefable's boosts useless.

**Super Effective Attackers**: Clefable can only boost up to a certain point with its status moves. Super effective STAB attacks can prove overwhelming for Clefable's defenses. Examples include Naganadel, Nihilego, Mega Metagross, Kartana, and Choice Specs Genesect.

**Other Stall**: Clefable is weak to other stall users that can out-stall Clefable as most of its moves (especially its recovery options) have relatively little PP. Users like Type:Null, Mega Slowbro, Registeel, Necrozma, and to a certain extent Magearna can all just PP stall Clefable at very little risk. SubSeeders as well.

**Taunt**: Taunt users like Mega Gardevoir, Tapu Fini, and Kee Berry Mew can beat Clefable by restricting its recovery but must be careful they don't fall prey to Magic Coat.

mostly good analysis, just wanted to add a few more examples to round it out and give a better picture of what clefable can / can't do.

[OVERVIEW]

Clefable acts as an anti-meta wall that can beat even the most formidable of setup Pokemon in 1v1. Using Psychium Z, it can opt to boost either of its defense stats with Z-Magic Coat or Z-Reflect, allowing it to beat common Metagame threats like Mega Charizard X and Y, Mega Gyarados, Dragonite, and non-Gunk Shot Greninja. Its powerful ability Unaware allows it to tackle Pokemon that might try to set up and break through Clefable's defenses like Mega Charizard X and Landorus-Therian. Despite its defenses Clefable can still fall prey to powerful super-effective attacks from the likes of Mega Metagross, Naganadel, and Genesect. And, while Unaware ignores stat boosts of enemies, Clefable's own defenses can still be lowered allowing Pokemon like Magnezone, Aegislash, and Nihilego to beat it. Finally, some attacks like Choice Band Victini's V-Create or Porygon-Z's Z-Hyper Beam can be too much for Clefable to handle, even with boosts.

[OVERVIEW]

Clefable acts as is an anti-metagame wall that can beat even the most formidable of setup Pokemon in 1v1. Using Psychium Z, it can opt to boost either of its defensive stats with Z-Magic Coat or Z-Reflect, allowing it to so it can (Clefable allows itself to beat?) beat common threats like Mega Charizard X and Y, Mega Gyarados, Dragonite, and non-Gunk Shot Greninja. Finally, (Unneeded and skeletal transition) some attacks like Choice Band Victini's V-create and Porygon-Z's Breakneck Blitz can be too much for Clefable to handle, even with boosts.

Moves

Magic Coat in conjunction with Psychium Z allows Clefable to boost its Special Defense by 2 stages at +4 priority, allowing it to beat special attackers such as non-Gunk Shot Greninja, Mega Charizard Y, and Choice Scarf Porygon-Z. Reflect with in conjunction with Psychium Z allows Clefable to cut incoming damage by two-thirds, beating strong physical attackers such as Mega Charizard X, Mega Gyarados, Landorus-T, and Garchomp. Moonlight gives access to reliable recovery and can make the Mega Charizard Y matchup more reliable by allowing Clefable to recover 66% instead of 50% in Sun sun.

Set Details
========

252 HP and 236 Defense EVs with a Bold nature allow Clefable to survive two Flare Blitzes from maximum Attack Adamant nature Mega Charizard X after a Z-Reflect.

Usage Tips
========

Against status users like Porygon2, Mega Gardevoir, and Chansey, Magic Coat can be used to let Clefable avoid taking otherwise gamebreaking effects such as Toxic and Taunt. Against mixed attackers such as Zeraora and Mega Diancie, use Reflect turn one followed by Z-Magic Coat, as this is the only way to boost both Special Defense and Defense.

Team Options
========

Fire-types like Mega Charizard X and Y, Victini, and Heatran make great partners for Clefable, dealing with the Steel- and Poison-types like Mega Metagross, Naganadel, and Magearna that Clefable struggles with while Clefable covers common weaknesses to Mega Gyarados, Donphan, Landorus-T, and Primarina. FEAR Pokemon like Aron do well with Clefable, as they can typically deal with the linear attackers like Victini, Meloetta, and stall Necrozma that Clefable is weak to, (You didn't use a comma before "while" in the first sentence of this paragraph) while Clefable eliminates common threats like Will-O-Wisp Mega Charizard, Mega Gyarados, and Garchomp. Specialized Taunt users like Whimsicott and Mega Gyarados make great teammates, covering opposing Taunt users like Deoxys-S and Mew that stall out Clefable while offsetting Clefable offsets (How do they offset their own weaknesses) their weaknesses to attackers like Mega Charizard Y and Tapu Lele.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Charge Beam can be used in place of Moonblast to beat foes like Mega Slowbro and Magearna, but such a set loses out on Moonblast's strong neutral coverage and auto-loses to Ground-types.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Very Strong Attackers**: Clefable needs a turn to set up, and in this time very strong or super effective attacks can KO it or damage it to a point where even after it sets up it will be KOed before it has a chance to recover.

Thus, super effective STAB attacks from Pokemon like Naganadel, Nihilego, Mega Metagross, Kartana, and Choice Specs Genesect can prove be (How are they supposed to "prove" when you already know) overwhelming for Clefable's defenses.

**Other Stall**: Clefable is weak to other stall Pokemon that can outstall it, as most of its moves (especially its recovery options) have relatively little few PP. (pretty sure PP is countable) Foes like Type: Null, Mega Slowbro, Registeel, Necrozma, and to a certain extent Magearna can all just PP stall Clefable at very little risk. Pokemon that use SubSeed like Serperior and Venusaur can also stall out Clefable given the Moonlight's low PP.

**Taunt**: Taunt users like Mega Gardevoir, Tapu Fini, and Kee Berry Mew can beat Clefable by restricting its recovery but must be careful they don't fall prey to Magic Coat.

Made a comment inquiring about the set name due to the fact that you want to use either of the Z-Moves depending on which enemy you're facing, but it's not that important. This is GP 2/2.

Additionally, I have comments for Cantius on their amcheck changes:

1) "acts as" vs "is" -- I sided with keeping "acts as" here because I felt that "is" was too restricting. Saying that Clefable is an anti-meta wall almost implies to me that absolutely nothing can avoid being walled by it, whereas "acts as" felt more in-line with our typical phrasing of analyses. At the end of the day, this felt subjective enough to side with the original writing rather than requiring a change.

2) "opt to" removal -- I chose to leave this in as I read the sentence as meaning "Clefable can choose to boost either its Defense or Special Defense," meaning it had an option to do one or the other and that they don't happen simultaneously (which is true).

3) "allowing it to" vs "so it can" -- I agreed with leaving this as is for similar reasons to my first comment, where the boosts themselves are what allows Clefable to beat those threats and therefore "it can beat" felt too all-encompassing. Again, this is subjective enough to let the author's original words stay imo.

4) Unaware ignores "the" stat boosts (addition) -- Agreed here.

5) "Finally" removal -- I felt that this was okay to stay in because of the time-related "Furthermore" that started the sentence that preceded this one. Going from "Furthermore" to "Finally" shows flow from one sentence to another, and I felt that the last sentence seemed to end kind of abruptly without it.

6) reflects "with" vs "in", "sun" decapitalization, and "nature" removal -- Agreed on all of these.

7) "Clefable offsets" vs my change -- Agreed that the wording of this was unclear, but I made a different change to avoid the repetition of "Clefable" only one word apart.

8) can "prove" vs can "be" -- I agreed with the use of prove here because it's demonstrating that Clefable's boosts have a limit to their power and are susceptible to strong attacks still, whereas the entire analysis so far has touted the defenses as the selling point of the set. Additionally, if I was going to change this, I'd probably prefer a change from "can be overwhelming for Clefable's defenses" to just "can overwhelm Clefable's defenses."

9) "little" vs "few", "just" removal, "the" removal -- All agreed.

Overall, a good check, though I think some things were probably too subjective to really merit changing. Keep in mind that the preference for GP is to keep the tone and intent of the author's words as long as what they've said is grammatically sound and not difficult to interpret. I definitely struggle with this too as I have a huge preference for certain subjective changes, but in the end some of them are unnecessary. Keep at it!

Keep at it!
