Colossoil is live on the CAP Server!

(Thanks to cyberzero for getting a good screenshot for me!)

The inaugural battle was fought between Plus and Deck Knight, with DK coming out victorious by utilizing a Stallrein team that beat Plus 2-0. It was a fun battle to watch!

This thread will serve as home base for all playtesting results and comments. If you post battle logs or long excerpts, please use hide tags, or code tags please.

I look forward to seeing how Colossoil performs!

cool, sprite looks good

unlike others im not going to do any playtesting at all and ill save my energy for the tournament after playtesting is over. knock yourself out guys ;)

It was a fun match to watch. I think everyone was baffled when they saw the Walrus beat the Narwhal.

For those who missed it, I have most of the battle saved, with the exception of the first opening attacks. Here's the log.

So far so good. Collosoil hasn't been that overwhelming so far, most people are running offensive sets with U-turn and other attacks. My biggest problem with the playtest is the amount of Starmie. Its maddening.

I have yet to see any noticable changes in the amount of secondary moves compared to the standard metagame. Then again, the amount of secondary moves usually used in OU is not that much

I have been using a set with EQ/Crunch/U-Turn/Rapid Spin, max attack Adamant with enough speed to get past Adamant Lucario. I haven't had an oppurtunity to ever use Rapid Spin, so I'm probaly going to change it. Its been solid, sometimes it does nothing, and other times it can get a kill or 2, though generally it either racks up damage against the opposing team or finishes weakened pokes.

Personally the ability Rebound is not too helpful. Since it only works on the switch in, Rebound Collosoil can be threatened by a Will-o-wisp/Toxic user later, while a Guts Collosoil doesn't care when the opponent uses a status move, and T-wave is ineffective anyways. The only status where Rebound is outright better is against sleep (Guts Collosoil can utilize Sleep Talk + Guts though). So I am using Guts. Also, Mindgames with the abilities are impossible as Rebound is announced whenever Collosoil switches in. I don't like that.

I see Collosoil as a formidable addition to the metagame, but it is not near the best.

Right now, I think everyone and their mother is predicting Colossoil being everywhere so they are avoiding the use of Rotom intentionally.

The only issue so far is that he can have a hard time countering some Pokemon who should not pose a threat, like Celebi or some Rotom forms. I predict that as the metagame reaches it's new equilibrium and Colossoil isn't everywhere, he can really shine. He pairs wonderfully with some big time Pokemon, like Salamence and Gyarados and Scizor.

I really think he has the potential to be the most impacting CAP yet, since if you ignore him, he can shred a lot of things and he needs some unorthodox checks.

I also agree Rebound is a tad underwhelming. I think most people thought "yay! Switch into Rotom w'o'w or T-Wave! Awesome!" So far that hasn't happened much, but like I said, time will change this.

Good game deck, I must say that Stallrein was definitely the last thing I would look at when building a Colossoil team. Never acknowledged hail, so it was a gg.

I just played a few matches on the ladder with Colossoil, and it is a fucking beast. Not broken IMO, but it's the new offensive ground type to use, and OU has been wanting that for a long time after they lost Garchomp. I'll post more to come when I find it, because any claim I would make would be inaccurate at this time, so I'll just go ahead and say what has been working for me.

Sucker Punch/Pursuit is a great way to fuck with the opponent. It threatens their pokemon, and they are forced to make a decision on whether to take the Pursuit or the Sucker Punch. Stopping the secondary has probably meant nothing in terms of using Sucker Punch really -- it's still fulfilling it's job and it gets kills just like it is meant to. Expect to see Rotom-c as one of the only Rotom formes, as Leaf Storm is the only thing keeping it afloat in a Colossoil infested metagame.

I was having problems with lead Starmie, so I ended up using Roserade as a lead.

Very solid so far. Already great as a lead. T-Spikes are a status Collo can't rebound, not a big deal if he uses guts, either. If it comes in on your Sleep Powder, you can just switch out to heal, and SR doesn't come up, so that's nice for your Sash. They risk death by Leaf Storm as well.

Anyway, as for Collossoil, it's great, but it's hard to deal with for me. Mainly cause nothing's standard yet, as everyone is just testing, but once it gets more standard, it'll be a good pokemon for CaP.

So far my greatest success has come from using Colossoil as a late game Guts sweeper (and its worked, #1 on Playtest Ladder =]). My basic strategy is:

- Take out any pokemon that outspeed Colossoil through paralysis or by killing them off.

- Bring Colossoil on something he scares out: Choiced Gengar, Heatran, etc. Guts will activate as they switch out, and anything coming in takes major damage.

- Keep defensive core healthy the whole time in case Colossoil has to switch out.

I'm finding that Defensive Celebi and SubRoost Zapdos are great partners for Guts Abuse Colossoil; they are both defensive pokemon, one is Physical the other Special, and both take on some of his "counters" (Scizor, Gyarados, Skarmory, that crowd.)

Here's the set I have been using.

Colossoil (M) @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Nature: Jolly (+Spd, -Atk)

- Earthquake
- Crunch
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit

Earthquake + Crunch are dual STABs, Stone Edge provides coverage, and Pursuit messes with any Choiced Gengars locked into Shadow Ball that want to get off easy.

As I have said, this set plays best late game when everything that is faster than 95 base speed is paralyzed/dead.

i've been finding toxic orb slightly better than flame orb on that set. colossoil is _really_ easy to force out, so toxic rarely has time to really add up.

also i've been surprising people with jolly lucario ^_^ it seems most colossoil are adamant.

The reason I opted against Toxic Orb was that I tend to be sweeping for more than 3 turns, so the damage adds up. Also, by utilizing Toxic Orb, bulkier pokemon have an easier time with Colossoil. In our battle, my Celebi was able to defeat your Colossoil by out stalling it with Recover. I find this doesn't happen when you run a Flame Orb. I think it comes down to what your specific plan for Colossoil is, and when you plan to use him in the battle.

I've done a bit of laddering with an offensive Colossoil, Crunch, Earthquake, U-Turn and Sucker Punch, and it's never been that overpowering. It's good, but not great. Rebound isnt nearly as good as anyone said it would be, I changed to Guts pretty quickly.

After being inspired on the ladder by a supporting Colossoil, which used Encore and it's large base HP to it's advantage, i'm going to try utilizing one of them.

Well, a swift half hour got me to #5 on the leaderboard, and Colossoil is taking a big chunck out of the credit for it. I'm not going to blabber about the set yet, since it's surprise factor is amazing. Colossoil's movepool is beyond great, and you can do so many things with it. This will be a fun round of playtesting for sure!

PS: I've been using SubPump Rotom-W to score kills on enemy Colossoil, and it's been working great for me so far.

Collosoil's actually been underwheming for me, however, this could be because everyone is packing counters for Collosoil, and expecting it.

Which is a good sign that it can be countered, and is not overpowered. (Unlike certain Ground-types, who cause chaos in a meta prepared for them)

Meanwhile, I would say that Collosoil's effect on the metagame cannot be tested in our usual playtesting. It was intended to stop the secondary, but there's no real way of testing this, because no-one's using secondaries, because Collosoil's on every team. We won't see how effective Collosoil actually is at stopping and punishing secondary users. Right now, because of the lack of Secondaries, it's basically an Inferior Tyranitar/Scizor, but with a little more bulk.

This also explains why most people are using GUTS, Rebound isn't getting any use, because there is no use for it right now.

The most effective set I've seen, ironically, uses Secondaries itself. It's an annoyer. It packs Sub/Focus Punch/Encore/Sucker Punch. The set is self explanatory, almost like Wobbafett, sub on something that won't like you, Encore as they do something, and easy predictions from there on.

Yeah, not really having much more trouble with Colossoil than anything else, and I'm only using flimsy checks for it. In my use of it, I'm finding that it really has four moveslot-syndrome, and that's what keeps it in check. It really wants to run Crunch/Sucker Punch/Earthquake/Stone Edge/Selfdestruct/Aqua Tail/Substitute/etc, but it can only pick four, and so there's typically something that can handle it as a result of that. Of course, finding out which four it's running can be somewhat tricky, especially right now since no sets have really been settled on yet, but not overly so.

That set you mentioned *erm erm* isn't really using secondaries. Encore isn't a secondary, and so isn't Substitute. That set is effective only because people don't expect it. Meanwhile;

Colossoil @ Life Orb / Toxic Orb / Flam Orb
Nature: Guts
~Earthquake
~Crunch
~Sucker Punch/U-Turn/Megahorn
~Sucker Punch/U-Turn/Megahorn

OrbSoil is running on most teams, as people are immediately overlooking Rebound and aim for sheer power. As such, Colossoil has become a bit too predictable, which is quite bad. A Pokemon with such a big movepool, which is already recognized by one set on the first day of playtesting is crazy, which is why I was aiming to catch others off-guard while expecting the offensive set. Moves Like Encore, Focus Punch, Rapid Spin, Substitute, Heal Bell and Ice Shard can be game-changing. Colossoil and its unpredictibility have won me many matches, and if someone really wants to aim high and top the leaderboard, he needs to think outside the box. Colossoil has the movepool to preform in many ways, and all you have to do is check boxes.

Then what are you waiting for? This is what playtesting is for - testing new ways to preform with this beast.

EDIT: To all those claiming that Rebound is inferior, it really depends on the set. If yu really are going for the Orb sets, Guts is the way to go, but if not, Rebound can be extremely helpful. Putting a lead Roserade or Smeargle to sleep is just lovely, and it gives Soil a free turn right off the bat. It can also switch in on Zapdos' Toxic, Porygon2's Toxic, Jirachi's Thunder Wave and many more. A "status absorber" is really nice, and as they all say - "don't knock it 'till you try it!"

I'll try to add logs later on on other set's preformances and the Orb set's preformances. I really want people to open up. Even the likes of Vaporeon aren't 2HKO'd by Guts-boosted LO EQ, as Leftovers makes it a 3HKO while Vappy protects and wishes away. Soil then slowly goes down from Toxic damage. Seriously - the offensive set isn't that great, and everyone is saying so.

Edit: As promised, I have a log. You may think that I just picked an easy battle, but truth to be told, Colossoil dominates teams like this often. I'm serious. Don't belive me? Try it for yourself!

For refference:
Code:
Colossoil (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Rebound
EVs: (Find out for yourself ;p)
"Find out for yourself" nature
- Substitute
- Encore
- Focus Punch
- Sucker Punch

I've taken a somewhat obvious route and used a Choice Band Colossoil.

Colossoil@Choice Band
Adamant 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Guts
-Crunch
-Earthquake
-U-turn
-Selfdestruct

This thing is enormously powerful. In one of the battles I had, Colossoil alone took out three of the opponent's Pokemon. 122 base Attack combined with above-average Speed and okay defenses make for a great Choice Bander. The only real problems are, as with other Choice Banders, giving the opponent a free turn after mispredicting or getting a KO. Crunch and Earthquake are both high-powered STAB moves, with Crunch being used more often. U-turn makes Colossoil work like a Banded Flygon in scouting my opponent's Colossoil check, and Selfdestruct can OHKO almost any non-resister when Colossoil is low on health. Some other options for the last slot are Pursuit and Ice Shard.

Been using the same set as Staraptor, but with Jolly over Adamant and Sucker Punch over Selfdestruct. Being able to KO those Latias and Starmie who try to take advantage of you once they figure out you're banded is awesome. Able to outspeed all Lucario, and Sucker Punch stops Gyarados and Salamence and hell, weakened Scizor cold. Colossoil is an offensive behemoth, but he's been KO'd from 100% to 0 on the switch a lot from mispredictions, so I think he is where he should be defensively

Shaymin @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 36 HP/220 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid / Modest nature
- Grass Knot / Seed Flare
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Leech Seed
- Rest / Sub

OR

Shaymin @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 236 HP/16 Def/36 Spd/220 SAtk
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Grass Knot / Seed Flare
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Leech Seed
- Rest

I tried out the lower Shaymin as something that could handle both colossoil and gyara. I haven't tried the calcs but I witnessed a grass knot OHKO an oil... probably 0 hp 0 spdef. I found the amount of celebi running around troubling, considering hp fire did about 35% to that of Umbreon Dan and allowed it to happily set up reflect and such.

That's why seed flare might be nice-- to allow it to win against celebi and maybe even blissey. However taking the final boosted ice fang from gyara 15% of the time when you miss is very bad.

Like I said, I've only tried the second set which is pretty slow. I figured colossoils would just end up sucker punching and gyaras would have a DD up anyway. The top set is more sweepy minded, outspeeding max jolly oil, and its something you used to see in UU :naughty:

I'm using a Bulky Offender, looks like this.
Colossoil@Leftovers
Adamant
I need help deciding what ability to run, I currently use Guts
252 HP/252 Atk/6 Spe
-Substitute
-Earthquake
-Crunch
-Ice Shard
Substitute when something has to switch out, i.e. Metagross who cannot to anything to Colossoil bar Ice Punch. Sub up, and attack what ever comes in. Free turn is provided by Substitute, allowing me to either

  • Get the KO with Ice Shard if in low HP, or
  • If faster, KO with an attack
Ice Shard is really worthwhile on this guy, it helps on Pokemon like Celebi as Crunch won't KO them but Crunch+Ice Shard will.

I realize that this Colossoil doesn't really "Stop the Secondary," but I have found it to be a good attacker all the same.

On another note for people who are playtesting and want success, ScarfCross and Agility SubPetaya Empoleon are working really well on the ladder.

fyi, you would be better off putting your bulk evs into 48 HP 104 Def 100 SpD because Colossoil has such awesome HP. If you want to do more defense calcs, go here: http://users.smogon.com/X-Act/defense.html

@ Blue Tornado: I will test that Sub Punch set also. I think Encore was seriously a little excessive on it. If you pm me the ev spread you are using (I already have a pretty good idea), I will pm you any good spreads I find.

So many options here...

Some other ideas I have right now:

Pursuit + Superpower, similar to the set that ttar can run, to destroy blissey so that a team of special sweepers can do their thing. I imagine that this set won't be that great in playtesting because the oven and the blob should be pretty scarce.

Torment/Sub/Protect/Filler: I could see this set being nasty, considering that collosoil has great defenses if invested in and a good attack even when not invested in, though water and ice moves are common on the same sets...idk

Colossoil seriously rocks the Choice Band + Guts. Between Pursuit, Earthquake, Stone Edge and U-Turn/Crunch, he can beat down most switch ins or switch outs!

Don't forget to answer the questions:

Questions to be Answered:
~ How easily would a Pokémon with such large of a niche be able to fit into a competitive team?
~ How large of an impact would the reducation of non damaging affects and moves have on the metagame?
- What, if any, would happen to the types of teams being used?
- How would this affect the usage of these types of moves?
~ How much of an affect does typing have on the ability for ANY Pokémon to perform this duty?
