[OVERVIEW]

Access to the fantastic ability Speed Boost gives Combusken a solid niche in PU, allowing it to reliably clean opposing teams late-game and, in combination with Swords Dance, break through Pokemon such as Carbink that serve as common checks to other offensive Fire-types like Simisear and Turtonator. Its Speed boosts also allow it to punish teams reliant on traditional revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Primeape and Alolan Sandslash to deal with other Fire-types like Simisear for sacrificing Pokemon to bring their revenge killer in safely. Combusken can run both physical and special sets that can break through each other's checks such as Gurdurr for the former and Lanturn for the latter. A near-unresisted STAB combination also makes it a reliable late-game cleaner, provided its main counter in Jellicent is removed. However, Combusken faces fierce competition as an offensive Fire-type from Simisear, as the latter's greater base Speed and Special Attack allow it to more immediately threaten opposing teams, and, importantly, its access to Grass Knot allows it to reliably break through one of Combusken's hardest counters in Jellicent. Furthermore, Combusken is held back by its low Speed, which leaves it outsped by common Choice Scarf users such as Primeape and Dodrio even after two Speed boosts. This fact coupled with Combusken's poor bulk also forces it to often use Protect first against faster Pokemon that can cripple or OHKO it such as Alolan Sandslash and Aurorus, potentially offering free switches to checks such as Lanturn and Eelektross. It also limits Combusken's ability to switch into resisted attacks or aggressively double switch in, which leaves it with limited setup opportunities compared to bulkier setup sweepers such as Gurdurr and Carracosta that offer some defensive utility and leaves it more vulnerable to being revenge killed by priority users such as Hitmonchan, Lycanroc, and Gurdurr.

Moves
========

Hidden Power Electric allows Combusken to OHKO Swanna and 2HKO Qwilfish, which both resist its STAB moves. Substitute can be run instead to allow Combusken to punish switches and protect itself from Pokemon such as Dodrio and Carracosta that would otherwise revenge kill it, gain extra Speed boosts, and stall poisoned Pokemon. Protect allows Combusken to get a free Speed boost and scout Choice item Pokemon such as Primeape, Dodrio, and Aurorus.

Set Details
========

Firium Z lets Combusken OHKO Oricorio-E with Inferno Overdrive after Stealth Rock damage; furthermore, Inferno Overdrive has a high chance to OHKO Skuntank and Alolan Raichu and hits targets such as Mudsdale and Musharna that would otherwise force Combusken out for as much damage as possible, KOing both after Fire Blast and Stealth Rock. Fightinium Z is an alternative that allows Combusken to OHKO Regirock and Drampa with All-Out Pummeling, do greater damage to Pokemon such as Lanturn, and bypass Focus Blast's poor accuracy once. Leftovers is an option that allows Combusken to set up more Substitutes while staying out of range of priority users such as Gurdurr and Lycanroc more easily; however, this should only be run on sets featuring Substitute, as three attacks sets benefit more from the extra damage Z-Crystals offer. Life Orb is an option on teams not using Toxic Spikes if another Pokemon is holding a Z-Crystal, helping to make up for Combusken's average damage output, such as offering it a high chance to OHKO Regirock with Focus Blast. The chip damage makes Combusken have a harder time staying out of range of priority attacks such as Lycanroc's Accelerock, however.

Usage Tips
========

Combusken should avoid taking too much chip damage from entry hazards and status where possible and should mainly be brought in via safe switches and aggressive double switches so it can stay out of range of priority attacks such as Gurdurr's Mach Punch and Lycanroc's Accelerock to reliably clean late-game. Combusken can also be used early- to mid-game to immediately pressure teams and take advantage of switches to counters such as Jellicent with appropriate double switches. If running Substitute, Combusken can use it to punish switches it forces against Pokemon such as Ferroseed, Cryogonal, Tangela, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel, although it must be careful when doing this against the latter two, as they can outspeed and either cripple or KO Combusken if they predict it to use Substitute. Against more offensive teams, Substitute can help ease prediction and make Combusken harder to revenge kill while helping it outspeed Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Dodrio and Primeape that it needs multiple Speed boosts for. Combusken should, however, be wary of setting up too many Substitutes when counters such as Carbink and Altaria are present, especially when running a Z-Crystal instead of Leftovers, so it has enough HP to take priority attacks or keep setting up Substitutes later in the match. If a teammate is running Toxic Spikes, Combusken can very effectively poison stall with Substitute + Protect, as Speed Boost allows it to nearly always set up Substitutes first. In particular, this allows Combusken to pressure Jellicent a lot more, forcing it to take poison damage while attempting to force Combusken out with Taunt.

Team Options
========

Combusken fits on bulky offense and balance teams that desire a late-game cleaner and on Toxic Spikes teams where it can also function as a poison staller. Pivots such as Lanturn, Eelektross, and Silvally-Fairy can help bring Combusken in on Pokemon that it can force out such as Victreebel, Cryogonal, and Regirock, offering it free opportunities to gain Speed boosts, set Substitutes, or break the enemy team. Lanturn and Eelektross in particular can help pressure Jellicent, and Lanturn can also help to spread poison onto Pokemon that annoy Combusken such as Jellicent, Eelektross, and opposing Lanturn and clear Combusken of status with Heal Bell. Pokemon that can help deal with Jellicent in particular are incredibly useful, especially when you're not running it alongside Toxic Spikes. Victreebel can consistently switch into and pressure defensive Jellicent while switching into and helping break other Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale that can force Combusken out when at high HP, as well as help break through Carbink and Clefairy, which can otherwise wall Combusken. Pokemon such as Choice Band Stoutland and Absol are capable of Pursuit trapping Jellicent and can help pressure the special walls that Combusken dislikes, such as Lanturn, Eelektross, and Musharna. Wallbreakers such as Choice Specs Aurorus, Taunt Oricorio-E, Golurk, and Swords Dance Silvally-Fairy can also help to break through specially defensive Pokemon such as Altaria, Carbink, and Clefairy that can consistently wall Combusken, as well as break holes in the enemy team for Combusken to reliably clean late-game.

Toxic Spikes support from Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Roselia can help Combusken break through opposing teams via stalling through the combination of Substitute + Protect, allowing it to more easily beat Pokemon such as Assault Vest Lanturn that would otherwise give it a lot of trouble. Roselia is able to consistently pressure Jellicent alongside setting Toxic Spikes, which is helpful in matchups against grounded Poison-types such as Victreebel or against entry hazard removers that Roselia loses to such as Cryogonal, while Qwilfish is able to provide a switch-in to priority users such as Hitmonchan and Gurdurr that could revenge kill Combusken, as well as to Choice Scarf Dodrio, which can outspeed Combusken after multiple Speed boosts. Spinblockers such as Jellicent and Sableye are excellent partners, especially on Toxic Spikes teams, to help deal with Rapid Spin users such as Alolan Sandslash, although they have to be wary of Toxic. Sableye can also offer Knock Off support to aid Combusken in poison stalling foes, while both Pokemon can help check Fighting-types such as Hitmonchan and Primeape and offer Taunt support to pressure entry hazard setters and removers.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Sky Uppercut is Combusken's strongest Fighting-type STAB option versus lighter Pokemon such as Lanturn and Carbink. Low Kick is an alternative that can do more damage versus heavier Pokemon such as Regirock while still retaining the ability to break through Lanturn and Carbink alongside Fightinium Z.

Set Details
========

Firium Z allows Combusken to OHKO Mudsdale and Choice Specs Jellicent with +2 Inferno Overdrive after Stealth Rock damage, deal heavy damage to Gurdurr, and avoid recoil once against high-HP targets such as Musharna to stay out of range of priority attacks. Alternatively, Fightinium Z allows Combusken to OHKO Fire-type checks such as Lanturn and Carbink, the latter after Stealth Rock, with +2 All-Out Pummeling; however, it does less damage versus targets such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale than Inferno Overdrive. Eviolite is an alternative option if another Pokemon is using a Z-Crystal, allowing Combusken to more easily take priority moves such as Gurdurr or Hitmonchan's Mach Punch, take an Earthquake from offensive Alolan Sandslash to risk setting up against it more freely without being KOed on a misprediction, and set up against Victreebel more easily. The lower damage output is very noticeable, however, allowing bulky Pokemon such as Mudsdale to force it out much more easily.

Usage Tips
========

Due to Combusken's low bulk and tendency to get worn down by entry hazards and Flare Blitz recoil, it should prioritize being brought in safely so it has enough HP to set up when necessary and stay out of range of priority moves from Pokemon such as Gurdurr. Because of this, Combusken should also wait to set up until answers such as defensive Jellicent have been crippled or removed, as it will be unlikely to get multiple setup opportunities; however, if Combusken is unlikely to be able to reliably set up or revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Dodrio are present, it can be used to immediately pressure the opposing team when forcing switches. Combusken should prioritize attempting to set up against Pokemon that cannot threaten it if possible, such as Cryogonal, Audino, and Choice Band Absol locked into Pursuit. However, it can also attempt to set up on Pokemon it can force to switch out, such as Victreebel and Alolan Sandslash, though they are faster and can cripple or KO Combusken if they end up staying in. Combusken can also make use of the fact that its two sets have different checks and counters, allowing it to potentially set up a Swords Dance on a switch-in to its special set, such as Carbink or Lanturn.

Team Options
========

Pivots such as Eelektross, Rotom-F, Lanturn, and Primeape are able to provide Combusken with safe switches into Pokemon such as Audino, Cryogonal, and Victreebel to get free setup opportunities. In particular, Eelektross can help pressure Jellicent and Mudsdale, while Rotom-F can also offer Defog support and help pressure Jellicent, Carracosta, and Qwilfish. Silvally-Fairy is another option that can run a Swords Dance set to pressure physically defensive Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale or provide Defog support. Regirock and Torterra are good choices for Stealth Rock setters to pair with Combusken, as the former provides a good switch-in to Choice Scarf Dodrio, which can outspeed and revenge kill Combusken easily, while the latter can help pressure Mudsdale and Jellicent. In return, Torterra greatly appreciates Combusken switching into and pressuring Cryogonal. Victreebel is a particularly good partner for Swords Dance Combusken, as it is able to switch into and pressure several Combusken checks such as Mudsdale, Jellicent, Lanturn, and Gurdurr. In return, Combusken can help pressure Cryogonal. Musharna can provide wallbreaking support with Future Sight to pressure switch-ins to Combusken such as Gurdurr and Jellicent. It can also allow Combusken a second opportunity to sweep and provide it with a free switch in to set up with Swords Dance thanks to Healing Wish. In return, Combusken can help pressure Dark-types such as Skuntank and Alolan Persian. Pursuit trappers such as Choice Band Absol, Skuntank, and Stoutland can remove one of Combusken's best answers in Jellicent. Absol and Stoutland can also wear down opposing teams for Combusken to clean more easily late-game, especially their shared switch-ins with Combusken such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Flamethrower can be run over Fire Blast for a more accurate Fire-type STAB attack to more reliably clean late-game and poison stall foes more easily thanks to its higher PP. The lower damage output can cause Combusken to struggle to claim KOs, however, such as the 2HKO on Silvally-Fairy after Stealth Rock. Hidden Power Ice is an option instead of Hidden Power Electric that allows Combusken to hit Altaria super effectively; however, this provides little coverage compared to Hidden Power Electric otherwise, not to mention specially defensive Altaria is not 2HKOed unless Stealth Rock is up. Furthermore, Altaria is a lot less common than Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Jellicent. Thunder Punch is an option on Swords Dance variants that allows Combusken to threaten Jellicent and Qwilfish without them being significantly weakened or removed first, but this prevents Combusken from running Protect, which will make it harder to accrue safe Speed boosts.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water-types**: Certain Water-type Pokemon such as Jellicent and Qwilfish resist Combusken's STAB combination. Defensive Jellicent sets in particular are capable of walling all Combusken sets unless Toxic Spikes are present. Qwilfish can greatly threaten Swords Dance Combusken sets, but it must watch out for Hidden Power Electric from special attacking sets, which can 2HKO it. Gastrodon can also wall special Combusken sets and can check Swords Dance sets not running Fightinium Z. Assault Vest Lanturn can also be problematic for special sets, as Focus Blast is only a 4HKO, while Lanturn can OHKO Combusken in return with Scald.

**Faster Pokemon**: Despite its ability, Combusken's low Speed enables Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Dodrio and Primeape to outspeed and revenge kill it even after two Speed boosts. Priority users such as Carracosta, Floatzel, and Hitmonchan are also capable of revenge killing Combusken, though Hitmonchan needs some chip damage from entry hazards or Combusken setting Substitutes.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Specially defensive Pokemon such as Clefairy, Carbink, and Altaria are capable of walling Combusken's special attacking set, even with Toxic Spikes present provided Carbink has Rest, with the former two also using it as setup fodder.

  • Access to the fantastic ability Speed Boost gives Combusken a solid niche in PU, allowing it to clean teams reliant on revenge killing threatening Fire-types such as Simisear this is a whole complex point about how it beats traditional revenge killers, i dont think sliding it in here rly does it justice, could be its own point, and in combination with Swords Dance also break through common defensive checks to offensive Fire-types like Simisear and Turtonator, such as Carbink.

  • Firium Z guarantees that Combusken OKHO's Oricorio-E after Stealth Rock, while hitting neutral targets such as Mudsdale and Musharna that would otherwise force it out for as much damage as possible, KOing both with Fire Blast into Z-Fire Blast after Stealth Rock damage.
  • Fightinium Z is an alternative that allows Combusken to OHKO Regirock, while having a slim chance to KO bulky Leftovers Lanturn with Focus Blast into Z-Focus Blast after Stealth Rock damage. i dont like talking about a slim chance that also requires hitting focus blast, could just say better damage vs things like lanturn or w/e
  • Leftovers offers Combusken a passive form of recovery, allowing it to set more Substitutes while staying out of range of priority users such as Gurdurr and Lycanroc more easily. specifically should only be run on substitute sets
would also say if ur not a tspikes team but cant give it the z move, LO is next best thing

Usage Tips
========

  • Combusken should avoid taking too much chip damage from entry hazards and status where possible, and should mainly be brought in via safe switches and aggressive doubles, to ensure that it can stay out of range of priority attacks such as Gurdurr's Mach Punch and Lycanroc's Accelrock, in order to reliably clean during the late game.

  • Combusken fits on bulky offense and balance teams that desire a late game cleaner, and Toxic Spikes semi-stall teams where it doubles up as a Toxic staller as well.
  • Pivots such as Lanturn, Eelektross, and Silvally-Fairy can help bring Combusken in on Pokemon that it can force out such as Victreebel, Cryogonal, and Regirock, offering it free opportunities to gain speed boosts, set substitues, or break the enemy team. Lanturn and Eelektross in particular can help pressure Jellicent for Combusken, while providing slow Volt Switch, and Lanturn can also help to spread Toxic onto Pokemon that annoy Combusken such as Jellicent, Eelektross and Lanturn.
  • Stealth Rock setters are incredibly useful to help chip consistent switch ins to Combusken such as Lanturn and Eelektross. Torterra can provide a solid check to these two Pokemon, as well as help to pressure Jellicent and Carbink. Regirock can instead provide an answer to Choice Scarf Dodrio and Calm Mind Oricorio-E and Oricorio-G, which can revenge kill and set up against Combusken respectively. i dont think rocks need a whole big shout, if anything at least spikes because they're good vs jellicent stuff. but im just getting tired of 3 lines about something everyone knows should be on the team anyway, doesn't feel necessary
  • Toxic Spikes can help Combusken break through teams via Toxic stalling through the combination of Substitute + Protect, allowing it to more easily beat Pokemon such as Lanturn that would otherwise give it a lot of trouble. Setters such as Qwilfish and Roselia therefore make good partners for Combusken. Roselia in particular is able to consistently pressure Jellicent throughout a match alongside the Toxic Spikes, which is helpful in matchups against grounded Poison-types such as Victreebel, or removers that Roselia can't touch such as Cryogonal, while Qwilfish is able to provide a switch in to priority users such as Hitmonchan and Gurdurr that could revenge kill Combusken, and to Scarf Dodrio, which can outspeed Combusken after multiple Speed Boosts.
  • Spinblockers such as Jellicent and Sableye are excellent partners, especially when running Toxic Spikes, to help deal with Rapid Spin users such as Alolan Sandslash. Sableye can also offer Knock Off support to remove Leftovers in order to aid Combusken in Toxic Stalling and breaking through enemy teams, while both Pokemon can help check Fighting-types such as Hitmonchan and Primeape that might attempt to revenge kill Combusken, and offer Taunt support to pressure entry hazard setters and removers.

  • Wallbreakers such as Drampa, Aurorurs, and Crabominable can help to break through the specially defensive Pokemon such as Altaria, Carbink, and Clefairy that can consistently wall Combusken, and help to break holes in the enemy team in order for Combusken to reliably clean in the late game.

  • Low Kick however is an alternative that can do more damage versus heavier Pokemon such as Regirock, while still retaining the ability to break through Lanturn and Carbink if running Fightinium Z, however will do little damage to these Pokemon otherwise. this is grammatically off and probably unnecessary since u already imply heavily it wont do much to them otherwise

Set Details

  • Firium Z allows Combusken to OHKO Mudsdale and Choice Specs Jellicent with +2 Z-Flare Blitz after Stealth Rock, deal critical awkward word choice since this often has a different meaning damage to Gurdurr, and avoid recoil once against high HP targets, in order to stay out of priority range.
  • Fightinium Z allows Combusken to OHKO lighter Pokemon such as Lanturn, and Carbink after Stealth Rock, with +2 Z-Low Kick, however does less damage versus targets such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale than Z-Flare Blitz.
  • Eviolite is an alternative option if another Pokemon is using a Z crystal, allowing Combusken to more easily take priority such as Gurdurr or Hitmonchan's Mach Punch, while allowing Combusken to take an Earthquake from offensive Alolan Sandslash, letting it more freely risk setting up against it without being KOd if predicted. Silvally-Fairy is another option, that can either provide U-Turn support while running a Swords Dance set that can help to pressure physically defensive Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale for Combusken, or provide Parting Shot support and entry hazard removal via Defog.
  • Stealth Rock can help pressure switch ins to Combusken such as Jellicent, and help put Pokemon in range of its attacks, for instance allowing it to OHKO Altaria with +2 Z-Flare Blitz after Stealth Rock damage. Regirock provides a good switch in to Choice Scarf Dodrio, which can outspeed and revenge kill Combusken easily, while Torterra can help pressure Mudsdale and Jellicent for Combusken.

  • Combusken can opt to run a Life Orb on its special attacking set to offset it's average attacking stats, however due to its poor bulk, the recoil damage quickly put Combusken in range of priority moves from Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Lycanroc. ye i still think this can get a set options instead
thunder punch on SD, HP ice on special as a similar to HP elec but hits alts

Priority users such as Carracosta, and Life Orb or Choice Band Hitmonchan after some chip damage from entry hazards or setting substitutes, are also capable of revenge killing Combusken.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon** - Specially defensive Pokemon such as Clefairy, Carbink, and Altaria are capable of walling Combusken's special attacking set, even with Toxic Spikes present provided Carbink has Rest, with the former two also using it as set up fodder, although Carbink has to be careful switching into Fightinium Z sets if it is heavily chipped, as Focus Blast into Z-Focus Blast is capable of doing upwards of 70% damage.

[OVERVIEW]

  • Access to the fantastic ability Speed Boost gives Combusken a solid niche in PU, allowing it to reliably clean teams late game, and in combination with Swords Dance also break through common defensive checks to offensive Fire-types like Simisear and Turtonator, such as Carbink. ig what u mean but this is very confusingly structured, on initial read i thought you're talking about using busken vs fire types. restructure this on writeup
  • Another important niche of Combusken is that it is capable of punishing teams reliant on using traditional revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Primeape and Alolan Sandslash to deal with other Fire-types like Simisear, by gaining Speed Boosts to punish the opponent for sacking Pokemon to bring their revenge killer in safely, while also punishing teams that may attempt to use Kangaskhan to revenge kill weakened threats, through the use of Protect. this is a bit too specific and being able to use protect to block fake out is not a trait that's exclusive to busken anyway
  • Combusken is also quite versatile, being able to run both physical and special sets that can break through each others checks such as Gurdurr and Lanturn. A near unresisted STAB combination also makes it a reliable late game cleaner, provided its main counter in Jellicent is removed.
  • Combusken however faces fierce competition as an offensive Fire-type from Simisear, due to its greater base Speed and Special Attack allowing it to more immediately threaten opposing teams, and importantly, access to Grass Knot, which allows it to reliably break through one of Combusken's hardest counters in Jellicent.

  • Combusken's poor bulk also leaves it unable to safely swap in against even resisted hits often, limiting switch in opportunities to safe switches and aggressive doubles in order to ensure Combusken can stay out of range of priority users such as Hitmonchan, Lycanroc and Gurdurr, and leaves it with limited set up opportunities compared to more bulky setup sweepers such as Gurdurr and Carracosta, that can also offer some defensive utility by checking switching into Pokemon such as Kangaskhan. merge the last two bullets as they're both talking about its poor bulk, and also throw in a mention of how status really cripples it and limits its setup oportunities

  • Hidden Power Electric allows Combusken to OHKO Swanna and 2HKO Qwilfish, which both resist Combusken's STAB moves.
  • Substitute can be ran instead to allow Combusken to punish switches, gain extra Speed Boosts, and stall Poisoned Pokemon. it also allows u to beat mons like dodrio, carracosta, and ludicolo that can easily check u if ur not behind a sub
  • Protect allows Combusken to get a free Speed Boost, and scout move choices from Pokemon holding Choice items, such as Primeape, Dodrio, and Aurorus.

Set Details
========
  • Firium Z guarantees that Combusken OKHO's Alolan Raichu from full health as well as Oricorio-E and Skuntank after Stealth Rock while hitting neutral all targets u mentioned in this bullet are neutral, just say pressuring targets such as Mudsdale and Musharna that would otherwise force it out for as much damage as possible, KOing both with Fire Blast into Z-Fire Blast after Stealth Rock damage.
  • Fightinium Z is an alternative that allows Combusken to OHKO Regirock and drampa, while doing better damage to pressuring Water-type Pokemon such as Lanturn and Ludicolo. also mention that it allows it to bypass focus blast's bad accuracy so u can remove threats like stout more reliably
  • Leftovers offers Combusken a passive form of recovery, allowing it to set more Substitutes while staying out of range of priority users such as Gurdurr and Lycanroc more easily. This should however only be ran on sets featuring Substitute. because?
  • Life Orb is an option on teams not using Toxic Spikes for Combusken if another Pokemon is holding a Z crystal, helping to make up for its average damage output. The chip damage however makes Combusken have a harder time staying out of range of priority attacks such as from Lycanroc. are there any notable examples of mons lo helps against?

Usage Tips
========

  • talk about how u can use it early-to-mid game to immediately pressure some stuff/do slight chip dmg/perform double switches but generally you'd want to preserve it with enough health for late game
  • If running Substitute, Combusken can use it to punish switches it forces against Pokemon such as Ferroseed, Cryogonal, tangela, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel, although it must be careful when doing this against the latter two, as if they predict that you use Substitute instead of Protect, they can outspeed and KO Combusken. vic doesnt ko from full Against more offensive teams, this can help to ease prediction and make Combusken harder to revenge kill, while also helping Combusken outsped Pokemon such as Scarf Dodrio and Primeape that it needs multiple Speed Boosts for.
  • Combusken should however be wary of setting up too many substitutes when counters such as Carbink or Altaria are present, especially when running a Z Crystal instead of Leftovers, in order to ensure it has enough HP to take priority attacks or set up substitutes when necessary later in the match. this is correct but seems a bit obv, but i'll let the next checker decide if to leave it in
  • If a teammate is running Toxic Spikes, Combusken can make use of its ability in order to very effectively Toxic stall with Substitute + Protect, as Speed Boost allows Combusken to nearly always set up Substitutes first. In particular, this also allows Combusken to pressure Jellicent a lot more, forcing it to take Toxic damage while forcing Combusken out with Taunt.

Team Options
========

  • Combusken fits on bulky offense and balance teams that desire a late game cleaner, and Toxic Spikes semi-stall not only teams where it doubles up as a Toxic staller as well.
Lanturn and Eelektross in particular can help pressure Jellicent for Combusken, while providing slow Volt Switch, fluff and Lanturn can also help to spread Toxic onto Pokemon that annoy Combusken such as Jellicent, Eelektross and Lanturn.
  • move all bullets talking about tspikes down, it's a fairly niche playstyle and other bullets should come first Toxic Spikes can help Combusken break through teams via Toxic stalling through the combination of Substitute + Protect, allowing it to more easily beat Pokemon such as Lanturn that would otherwise give it a lot of trouble.
  • Pokemon that can help deal with Jellicent are incredibly useful especially when not running Toxic Spikes. Victreebel can consistently switch into and pressure defensive Jellicent, while also switching into and helping break other Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale that can force Combusken out when at high HP, and can also help break through Carbink and Clefairy, which can otherwise wall Combusken. Pokemon such as Choice Band Stoutland and Absol and skunk are capable of Pursuit trapping Jellicent for Combusken, and can help pressure the special walls that Combusken dislikes, such as Lanturn and Eelektross and mushy. also hello why aren't there any mentions of cryo
  • Wallbreakers such as Drampa, Aurorurs, and Crabominable can help to break through the specially defensive Pokemon such as Altaria, Carbink, and Clefairy that can consistently wall Combusken, and help to break holes in the enemy team in order for Combusken to reliably clean in the late game. honestly i don't particulaly like any of these pairings, esp drampa which really struggles vs carbink and clefairy and when paired with busken u clickx vs jelli+fairy cores. sd fairyvally, golurk, taunt pompom, and victreebel are all better examples that have decent synergy with busken

Moves
========

  • Sky Uppercut is Combusken's strongest Fighting-type STAB option versus lighter Pokemon such as Lanturn and Carbink.
  • Low Kick however is an alternative that can do more damage versus heavier Pokemon such as Regirock, while still retaining the ability to break through Lanturn and Carbink if running Fightinium Z.

Set Details
========

  • Firium Z allows Combusken to OHKO Mudsdale and Choice Specs Jellicent with +2 Z-Flare Blitz after Stealth Rock, deal heavy damage to Gurdurr, and avoid recoil once against high HP targets such as musharna, in order to stay out of priority range.
  • Fightinium Z allows Combusken to OHKO lighter Pokemon fire-type checks such as Lanturn, and Carbink after Stealth Rock, with +2 Z-Low Kick, however does less damage versus targets such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale than Z-Flare Blitz.
  • Eviolite is an alternative option if another Pokemon is using a Z crystal, allowing Combusken to more easily take priority such as Gurdurr or Hitmonchan's Mach Punch, while allowing Combusken to take an Earthquake from offensive Alolan Sandslash, letting it more freely risk setting up against it without being KOd if predicted. also allows it to set up more easily on vic The lower damage output is however very noticeable, allowing bulky Pokemon such as Mudsdale to much more easily force it out.

Usage Tips
========

  • Due to Combusken's low bulk and tendency to get chipped from entry hazards and flare blitz recoil, it should prioritise being brought in safely, in order to ensure that it has enough HP to set up when necessary, and to stay out of range of priority moves from Pokemon such as Gurdurr.
  • Beceause of this, Combusken should also wait to set up until answers such as defensive Jellicent are crippled or removed as it will be unlikely to get multiple set up opportunities, although if Combusken is unlikely to reliably set up, or revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Dodrio are present, it can be used to immediately pressure the opposing team when forcing switches.
  • Combusken should prioritise attempting to set up against Pokemon that cannot threaten it if possible, such as Cryogonal, Audino, and Choice Band Absol locked into Pursuit. Combusken can however also attempt to set up on Pokemon it can force to switch out such as Victreebel and Alolan Sandslash, however as they are faster they can cripple or KO Combusken if they stay in instead of switching out on a predicted Protect. vic doesn't ko from full
  • Combusken can also make use of the fact that its two sets have different checks and counters, allowing it to potentially set up a Swords Dance on a switch in to an answer to its Special set, such as Carbink or Lanturn.

Team Options
========

  • Pivots such as Eelektross, Lanturn, and Primeape are able to provide Combusken with safe switches into Pokemon such as Audino, Cryogonal, and Victreebel, in order to get free set up opportunities. In particular, Eelektross can help to pressure Jellicent and Mudsdale for Combusken. Silvally-Fairy is another option, that can either provide U-Turn support while running a Swords Dance set that can help to pressure physically defensive Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale for Combusken, or provide Parting Shot support and entry hazard removal via Defog. just mention momentum instead of linking u-turn/parting shot to specific sets, defog vally commonly runs u-turn now to improve its mu vs regi. you can also mention rotom-f in a similar manner, in addition to momentum and defog it also heavily pressures jelli, costa, and qwil
  • Stealth Rock can help pressure switch ins to Combusken such as Jellicent not rly?, and help put Pokemon in range of its attacks, for instance allowing it to OHKO Altaria with +2 Z-Flare Blitz after Stealth Rock damage besides altaria being a roll, the first sentence is a bit redundant bc like, every mon benefits from rocks and busken doesn't particularly benefit from them more than other mons. Regirock provides a good switch in to Choice Scarf Dodrio, which can outspeed and revenge kill Combusken easily, while Torterra can help pressure Mudsdale and Jellicent for Combusken. expand a bit more on what busken does for them
  • Victreebel is a particularly good partner for Swords Dance Combusken, able to switch into and pressure a lot of its checks such as Mudsdale, Jellicent and Gurdurr and lanturn. In return, Combusken can help to pressure Cryogonal and oricorio-g for Victreebel.
  • Musharna can provide breaking support with Future Sight, to pressure switch ins to Combusken such as Gurdurr and Jellicent. It can also provide Healing Wish support, allowing Combusken a second opportunity to sweep, and providing it with a free switch in to set up. and busken helps mushy by pressuring dark-types like skunk and alolan persian
  • Pursuit trappers such as Choice Band Absol, Skuntank, and Stoutland can help to remove one of Combusken's best answers in Jellicent. Absol and Stoutland can also help to break wear down. break is a bit of a stretch in regi's case opposing teams for Combusken to clean easier in the late game, especially physical walls such as Gurdurr they all really struggle with it, Regirock and Mudsdale.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Flamethrower can be ran over Fire Blast for a more accurate Fire-type STAB attack to more reliably clean late game, and with more PP to take advantage of when Toxic stalling. The lower damage output can cause Combusken to struggle to claim kills however, such as not being able to 2HKO Silvally-Fairy after Stealth Rock unlike Fire Blast.
  • Hidden Power Ice is an option instead of Hidden Power Electric that allows Combusken to hit Altaria supereffectively, however this provides little coverage compared to Hidden Power Electric otherwise, and specially defensive Altaria is not 2HKO'd unless Stealth Rock are up. this is completely unviable and doesn't warrant a mention
  • Thunder Punch is an option on Swords Dance variants that allows Combusken to threaten Jellicent and Qwilfish without the Pokemon being significantly weakened or removed first, however this prevents Combusken from running Protect, which will make it harder to accrue ??? safe Speed Boosts. i'd give up on swords dance first tbh so i'd talk about that instead

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water-Types** - Certain Water-type Pokemon such as Jellicent and Qwilfish resist Combusken's STAB combination. Defensive Jellicent sets in particular are capable of walling all Combusken sets unless Toxic Spikes are present. Qwilfish can greatly threaten Swords Dance Combusken sets, but must watch out for Hidden Power Electric from Special attacking sets, which can 2HKO it. Gastrodon can also wall special attacking Combusken sets, and can check Swords Dance sets not running Fightinium Z. add lanturn, special sets quite struggles with av especially

**Faster Pokemon** - Despite its ability, due to Combusken's low initial speed, Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Dodrio and Primeape are able to outspeed and revenge kill it even after 2 Speed Boosts. Priority users such as Carracosta, and Life Orb or Choice Band Hitmonchan and floatzel after some chip damage from entry hazards or setting substitutes, are also capable of revenge killing Combusken. the last sentence is structurally wrong so make sure to fix that in writeup

**Specially Defensive Pokemon** - Specially defensive Pokemon such as Clefairy, Carbink, and Altaria are capable of walling Combusken's special attacking set, even with Toxic Spikes present provided Carbink has Rest, with the former two also using it as set up fodder, although Carbink has to be careful switching into Fightinium Z sets if it is heavily chipped, as Focus Blast into Z-Focus Blast is capable of doing upwards of 70% damage. the last part is a bit too specific for a mon that doesnt see *that* much usage, i'd just remove it. also talk about how mushy can check it and use future sight/setup with cm although it doesn't switch in very comfortably

[OVERVIEW]

Access to the fantastic ability Speed Boost gives Combusken a solid niche in PU, allowing it to reliably clean teams late game, and in combination with Swords Dance also break through Pokemon such as Carbink that serve as common checks to other offensive Fire-typees (types) like Simisear and Turtonator. Another important niche of Combusken is that it is capable of punishing teams reliant on using traditional revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Primeape and Alolan Sandslash to deal with other Fire-types like Simisear, by gaining Speed Boosts to punish the opponent for sacking Pokemon to bring their revenge killer in safely. Combusken is also quite versatile, being able to run both physical and special sets that can break through each others checks such as Gurdurr and Lanturn. A near unresisted STAB combination also makes it a reliable late game cleaner, provided its main counter in Jellicent is removed. Combusken however faces fierce competition as an offensive Fire-type from Simisear, due to its greater base Speed and Special Attack allowing it to more immediately threaten opposing teams, and importantly, access to Grass Knot, which allows it to reliably break through one of Combusken's hardest counters in Jellicent. Combusken is unfortunately held back by its low initial base speed, which leaves it outsped by common Choice Scarf users such as Primeape and Dodrio even after two Speed Boosts. This fact coupled with Combusken's poor bulk also forces it to often have to use Protect first against faster Pokemon that can cripple or OHKO it such as Alolan Sandslash and Aurorus, potentially offering free switches into checks such as Lanturn and Eelektross. Combusken's poor bulk also leaves it unable to safely swap in against even resisted hits often, limiting switch in opportunities to safe switches and aggressive doubles in order to ensure Combusken can stay out of range of priority users such as Hitmonchan, Lycanroc and Gurdurr, and leaves it with limited set up opportunities compared to more bulky setup sweepers such as Gurdurr and Carracosta, that can also offer some defensive utility by checking Pokemon such as Kangaskhan.

Hidden Power Electric allows Combusken to OHKO Swanna and 2HKO Qwilfish, which both resist Combusken's STAB moves. Substitute can be ran instead to allow Combusken to punish switches and protect itself from Pokemon such as Dodrio and Carracosta that would otherwise revenge kill it, gain extra Speed Boosts, and stall Poisoned Pokemon. Protect allows Combusken to get a free Speed Boost, and scout move choices from Pokemon holding Choice items, such as Primeape, Dodrio, and Aurorus.

Set Details

Firium Z guarantees that Combusken OKHO's Oricorio-E after Stealth Rock and has a high chance, to OHKO Skuntank and Alolan Raichu while hitting targets such as Mudsdale and Musharna that would otherwise force it out for as much damage as possible, KOing both with Fire Blast into Z-Fire Blast after Stealth Rock damage. Fightinium Z is an alternative that allows Combusken to OHKO Regirock and Drampa, while doing better damage to Pokemon such as Lanturn, and allowing Combusken to bypass Focus Blast's accuracy once. Leftovers offers Combusken a passive form of recovery, allowing it to set more Substitutes while staying out of range of priority users such as Gurdurr and Lycanroc more easily. This should however only be ran on sets featuring Substitute, as 3 attacks sets benefit more from the extra damage Z-Crystals offer. Life Orb is an option on teams not using Toxic Spikes for Combusken if another Pokemon is holding a Z crystal, helping to make up for its average damage output, for instance offering Combusken a high chance to OHKO Regirock with Focus Blast. The chip damage however makes Combusken have a harder time staying out of range of priority attacks such as from Lycanroc.

Usage Tips
========

Combusken should avoid taking too much chip damage from entry hazards and status where possible, and should mainly be brought in via safe switches and aggressive doubles, to ensure that it can stay out of range of priority attacks such as Gurdurr's Mach Punch and Lycanroc's Accelrock, in order to reliably clean during the late game. Combusken can be used during the early-to-mid game to immediately pressure teams, and take advantage of switches into counters such as Jellicent with appropriate double switches, however Combusken's HP should be preserved sufficiently if it is likely to be able to sweep during the late game. If running Substitute, Combusken can use it to punish switches it forces against Pokemon such as Ferroseed, Cryogonal, Tangela, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel, although it must be careful when doing this against the latter two, as if they predict that you use Substitute instead of Protect, they can outspeed and either cripple or KO Combusken. Against more offensive teams, this can help to ease prediction and make Combusken harder to revenge kill, while also helping Combusken outsped Pokemon such as Scarf Dodrio and Primeape that it needs multiple Speed Boosts for. Combusken should however be wary of setting up too many substitutes when counters such as Carbink or Altaria are present, especially when running a Z Crystal instead of Leftovers, in order to ensure it has enough HP to take priority attacks or set up substitutes when necessary later in the match. If a teammate is running Toxic Spikes, Combusken can make use of its ability in order to very effectively Toxic stall with Substitute + Protect, as Speed Boost allows Combusken to nearly always set up Substitutes first. In particular, this also allows Combusken to pressure Jellicent a lot more, forcing it to take Toxic damage while forcing Combusken out with Taunt.

Team Options
========

Combusken fits on bulky offense and balance teams that desire a late game cleaner, and Toxic Spikes teams where it can function as a Toxic staller as well. Pivots such as Lanturn, Eelektross, and Silvally-Fairy can help bring Combusken in on Pokemon that it can force out such as Victreebel, Cryogonal, and Regirock, offering it free opportunities to gain Speed Boosts, set substitues, or break the enemy team. Lanturn and Eelektross in particular can help pressure Jellicent for Combusken, and Lanturn can also help to spread Toxic onto Pokemon that annoy Combusken such as Jellicent, Eelektross and Lanturn. (lanturn can also remove any status for combusken, should it be worn down) Pokemon that can help deal with Jellicent are incredibly useful especially when not running Toxic Spikes. Pokemon such as Choice Band Stoutland and Absol are capable of Pursuit trapping Jellicent for Combusken, and can help pressure the special walls that Combusken dislikes, such as Lanturn, Eelektross and Musharna. Toxic Spikes can help Combusken break through teams via Toxic stalling through the combination of Substitute + Protect, allowing it to more easily beat Pokemon such as Lanturn that would otherwise give it a lot of trouble. (lanturn isnt the best example here as it can obviously use heal bell to mitigate this) Setters such as Qwilfish and Roselia therefore make good partners for Combusken. Spinblockers such as Jellicent and Sableye are excellent partners, especially when running Toxic Spikes, to help deal with Rapid Spin users such as Alolan Sandslash. (albeit they have to be wary of toxic) Sableye can also offer Knock Off support to remove Leftovers in order to aid Combusken in Toxic Stalling and breaking through enemy teams, while both Pokemon can help check Fighting-types such as Hitmonchan and Primeape that might attempt to revenge kill Combusken, and offer Taunt support to pressure entry hazard setters and removers.

[OVERVIEW]
Access to the fantastic ability Speed Boost gives Combusken a solid niche in PU, allowing it to reliably clean opposing teams late-game (RC) and, (AC) in combination with Swords Dance, also break through Pokemon such as Carbink that serve as common checks to other offensive Fire-types like Simisear and Turtonator. Another important niche of Combusken is that it is capable of punishing its Speed boosts allow it to punish teams reliant on using traditional revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Primeape and Alolan Sandslash to deal with other Fire-types like Simisear, by gaining Speed boosts to punish the opponent for sacking sacrificing Pokemon to bring their revenge killer in safely. Combusken is also quite versatile, being able to run both physical and special sets that can break through each others other's checks such as Gurdurr for the former and Lanturn for the latter. (?) A near-unresisted (AH) STAB combination also makes it a reliable late-game (AH) cleaner, provided its main counter in Jellicent is removed. Combusken However, Combusken faces fierce competition as an offensive Fire-type from Simisear, due to its as the latter's greater base Speed and Special Attack allowing allow it to more immediately threaten opposing teams, and, (AC) importantly, its access to Grass Knot, which allows it to reliably break through one of Combusken's hardest counters in Jellicent. Furthermore, Combusken is unfortunately held back by its low initial base Speed, which leaves it outsped by common Choice Scarf users such as Primeape and Dodrio even after two Speed boosts. This fact coupled with Combusken's poor bulk also forces it to often have to use Protect first against faster Pokemon that can cripple or OHKO it such as Alolan Sandslash and Aurorus, potentially offering free switches into to checks such as Lanturn and Eelektross; (SC) Combusken's poor bulk also leaves it unable to safely swap in against even resisted hits often, limiting switch in furthermore, it limits its opportunities to switch in to safe switches and aggressive doubles switches in order to ensure Combusken it can stay out of range of priority users such as Hitmonchan, Lycanroc, and Gurdurr, and leaves it with limited set up setup opportunities compared to more bulky setup sweepers such as Gurdurr and Carracosta, (AC) that which can also offer some defensive utility by checking Pokemon such as Kangaskhan. (still not happy about this at all but idk if there's a good balance here between fusing stuff / cutting down redundancy and turning this into a run-on)

Hidden Power Electric allows Combusken to OHKO Swanna and 2HKO Qwilfish, (AC) which both resist Combusken's its STAB moves. Substitute can be run instead to allow Combusken to punish switches and protect itself from Pokemon such as Dodrio and Carracosta that would otherwise revenge kill it, gain extra Speed boosts, and stall poisoned Pokemon. Protect allows Combusken to get a free Speed boost (RC) and scout move choices from Pokemon holding Choice items, such as Primeape, Dodrio, and Aurorus.

Set Details

Firium Z guarantees that Combusken OKHOes Oricorio-E after Stealth Rock damage; (SC) and furthermore, it has a high chance to OHKO Skuntank and Alolan Raichu (RC) while hitting and hits targets such as Mudsdale and Musharna that would otherwise force it Combusken out for as much damage as possible, KOing both with the combination of Fire Blast into and Inferno Overdrive after Stealth Rock damage. Fightinium Z is an alternative that allows Combusken to OHKO Regirock and Drampa, while doing better do greater damage to Pokemon such as Lanturn, and allows Combusken to bypass Focus Blast's poor accuracy once. Leftovers offers Combusken a passive form of recovery, allowing it is an option that allows Combusken to set up more Substitutes while staying out of range of priority users such as Gurdurr and Lycanroc more easily; (SC) however, this should however only be ran run on sets featuring Substitute, as 3 attacks sets benefit more from the extra damage Z-Crystals offer. Life Orb is an option on teams not using Toxic Spikes (idg relevancy of this) for Combusken if another Pokemon is holding a Z-Crystal, helping to make up for its average damage output, for instance such as offering Combusken a high chance to OHKO Regirock with Focus Blast. The chip damage however makes Combusken have a harder time staying out of range of priority attacks such as Lycanroc's Accelrock Accelerock, however.

Usage Tips
========

Combusken should avoid taking too much chip damage from entry hazards and status where possible (RC) and should mainly be brought in via safe switches and aggressive double switches (RC) to ensure that it can stay out of range of priority attacks such as Gurdurr's Mach Punch and Lycanroc's Accelrock Accelerock in order to reliably clean during the late-game. Combusken can also be used during the early-(space)to mid-game (hyphenation) to immediately pressure teams (RC) and take advantage of switches into to counters such as Jellicent with appropriate double switches; (SC) however, (AC) Combusken's HP should be preserved sufficiently if it is likely to be able to sweep during the late-game. If running Substitute, Combusken can use it to punish switches it forces against Pokemon such as Ferroseed, Cryogonal, Tangela, Alolan Sandslash, and Victreebel, although it must be careful when doing this against the latter two, (AC) as if they predict that you will use Substitute instead of Protect, they can outspeed and either cripple or KO Combusken if they predict it. Against more offensive teams, Substitute can help to ease prediction and make Combusken harder to revenge kill (RC) while also helping Combusken it outspeed Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Dodrio and Primeape that it needs multiple Speed boosts for. Combusken should, (AC) however, (AC) be wary of setting up too many Substitutes when counters such as Carbink or Altaria are present, especially when running a Z-Crystal instead of Leftovers, in order to ensure it has enough HP to take priority attacks or keep setting up Substitutes when necessary later in the match. If a teammate is running Toxic Spikes, Combusken can make use of its ability in order to very effectively Toxic stall with Substitute + Protect, as Speed Boost allows Combusken it to nearly always set up Substitutes first. In particular, this also allows Combusken to pressure Jellicent a lot more, forcing it to take Toxic damage while attempting to force Combusken out with Taunt.

Team Options
========

Combusken fits on bulky offense and balance teams that desire a late-game (AH) cleaner (RC) and on Toxic Spikes teams where it can also function as a Toxic staller. Pivots such as Lanturn, Eelektross, and Silvally-Fairy can help bring Combusken in on Pokemon that it can force out such as Victreebel, Cryogonal, and Regirock, offering it free opportunities to gain Speed boosts, set Substitues Substitutes, or break the enemy team. Lanturn and Eelektross in particular can help pressure Jellicent for Combusken, and Lanturn can also help to spread Toxic onto Pokemon that annoy Combusken such as Jellicent, Eelektross, (AC) and opposing Lanturn (RC) and clear Combusken of status with Heal Bell should it be worn down. Pokemon that can help deal with Jellicent in particular are incredibly useful especially when you're not running Toxic Spikes. Victreebel can consistently switch into and pressure defensive Jellicent (RC) while also switching into and helping break other Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale that can force Combusken out when at high HP, and can also as well as help break through Carbink and Clefairy, (AC) which can otherwise wall Combusken. Pokemon such as Choice Band Stoutland and Absol are capable of Pursuit trapping Jellicent for Combusken (RC) and can help pressure the special walls that Combusken dislikes, (AC) such as Lanturn, Eelektross, (AC) and Musharna. Wallbreakers such as Choice Specs Aurorus, Taunt Oricorio-E, Golurk, and Swords Dance Silvally-Fairy can also help to break through the specially defensive Pokemon such as Altaria, Carbink, and Clefairy that can consistently wall Combusken, and help to as well as break holes in the enemy team in order for Combusken to reliably clean in the late-game.

Toxic Spikes support from Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Roselia can help Combusken break through opposing teams via Toxic stalling through the combination of Substitute + Protect, allowing it to more easily beat Pokemon such as Assault Vest Lanturn that would otherwise give it a lot of trouble. Toxic Spikes setters such as Qwilfish and Roselia therefore make good partners for Combusken. Roselia in particular is able to consistently pressure Jellicent throughout a match alongside setting Toxic Spikes, which is helpful in matchups against grounded Poison-types such as Victreebel (RC) or against entry hazard removers that Roselia loses to such as Cryogonal, while Qwilfish is able to provide a switch-in (AH) to priority users such as Hitmonchan and Gurdurr that could revenge kill Combusken, and as well as to Choice Scarf Dodrio, which can outspeed Combusken after multiple Speed boosts. Spinblockers such as Jellicent and Sableye are excellent partners, especially when running on Toxic Spikes teams, (optional, cohesion) to help deal with Rapid Spin users such as Alolan Sandslash, although they have to be wary of Toxic. Sableye can also offer Knock Off support to remove Leftovers from oppoisng opposing Pokemon in order to aid Combusken in Toxic stalling foes and breaking through them, while both Pokemon can help check Fighting-types such as Hitmonchan and Primeape that might attempt to revenge kill Combusken and offer Taunt support to pressure entry hazard setters and removers.

Sky Uppercut is Combusken's strongest Fighting-type STAB option versus lighter Pokemon such as Lanturn and Carbink. Low Kick however is an alternative that can do more damage versus heavier Pokemon such as Regirock (RC) while still retaining the ability to break through Lanturn and Carbink if running alongside Fightinium Z.

Set Details

Firium Z allows Combusken to OHKO Mudsdale and Choice Specs Jellicent with +2 Inferno Overdrive after Stealth Rock damage, deal heavy damage to Gurdurr, and avoid recoil once against high-HP (AH) targets such as Musharna (RC) in order to stay out of priority range of priority attacks. Alternatively, Fightinium Z allows Combusken to OHKO Fire-type checks such as Lanturn (RC) and Carbink, the latter after Stealth Rock, with +2 All-Out (AH) Pummelling Pummeling; (SC) however, it does less damage versus targets such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale than Inferno Overdrive. Eviolite is an alternative option if another Pokemon is using a Z-Crystal, allowing Combusken to more easily take priority moves such as Gurdurr or Hitmonchan's Mach Punch, while allowing Combusken to take take an Earthquake from offensive Alolan Sandslash letting it in order to more freely risk setting up against it more freely without being KOd if predicted KOed on a misprediction, and set up against Victreebel more easily. The lower damage output is however very noticeable, however, allowing bulky Pokemon such as Mudsdale to much more easily force it out much more easily.

Usage Tips
========

Due to Combusken's low bulk and tendency to get chipped worn down by entry hazards and Flare Blitz recoil, it should prioritise prioritize being brought in safely in order to ensure that it has enough HP to set up when necessary (RC) and to stay out of range of priority moves from Pokemon such as Gurdurr. Beceause Because of this, Combusken should also wait to set up until answers such as defensive Jellicent are have been crippled or removed, (AC) as it will be unlikely to get multiple set up setup opportunities; (SC) although however, (AC) if Combusken is unlikely to be able to reliably set up (RC) or revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Dodrio are present, it can be used to immediately pressure the opposing team when forcing switches. Combusken should prioritise prioritize attempting to set up against Pokemon that cannot threaten it if possible, such as Cryogonal, Audino, and Choice Band Absol locked into Pursuit. However, it Combusken can however can also attempt to set up on Pokemon it can force to switch out, (AC) such as Victreebel and Alolan Sandslash, however as though they are faster they and can cripple or KO Combusken if they end up staying in on a predicted switch out. Combusken can also make use of the fact that its two sets have different checks and counters, allowing it to potentially set up a Swords Dance on a switch-in (AH) to an answer to its special set, such as Carbink or Lanturn.

Team Options
========

Pivots such as Eelektross, Rotom-F, Lanturn, and Primeape are able to provide Combusken with safe switches into Pokemon such as Audino, Cryogonal, and Victreebel, in order to get free set up setup opportunities. In particular, Eelektross can help to pressure Jellicent and Mudsdale for Combusken, (comma) while Rotom-F can also provide momentum with Volt Switch, while offering offer Defog support and helping to pressure Jellicent, Carracosta, and Qwilfish for Combusken. Silvally-Fairy is another option (RC) that can provide momentum while potentially running run a Swords Dance set that can help to pressure physically defensive Pokemon such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale for Combusken (RC) or providing provide Defog support. Regirock and Torterra are good choices for Stealth Rock setters to pair with Combusken, as Regirock the former provides a good switch-in (AH) to Choice Scarf Dodrio, which can outspeed and revenge kill Combusken easily, while Torterra the latter can help pressure Mudsdale and Jellicent for Combusken. In return, Torterra greatly appreciates Combusken switching into and pressuring Cryogonal for it. Victreebel is a particularly good partner for Swords Dance Combusken, as it is able to switch into and pressure a lot of its the latter's checks such as Mudsdale, Jellicent, Lanturn, and Gurdurr. In return, Combusken can help to pressure Cryogonal for Victreebel. Musharna can provide wallbreaking support with Future Sight (RC) to pressure switch-ins (AH) to Combusken such as Gurdurr and Jellicent. It can also provide Healing Wish support, allowing allow Combusken a second opportunity to sweep and providing it with a free switch in to set up with Swords Dance thanks to Healing Wish. In return, (AC) Combusken can help pressure Dark-types such as Skuntank and Alolan Persian for Musharna. Pursuit trappers such as Choice Band Absol, Skuntank, and Stoutland can help to remove one of Combusken's best answers in Jellicent. Absol and Stoutland can also help to wear down opposing teams for Combusken to clean more easily in the late-game, (AH) especially their shared switch-ins (AH) with Combusken such as Gurdurr and Mudsdale.

Flamethrower can be run over Fire Blast for a more accurate Fire-type STAB attack to more reliably clean late-game (AH, RC) and with more PP to take advantage of when Toxic stalling foes more easily thanks to its higher PP. The lower damage output can cause Combusken to struggle to claim kills KOs, however, such as not being able to the 2HKO on Silvally-Fairy after Stealth Rock unlike Fire Blast. Hidden Power Ice is an option instead of Hidden Power Electric that allows Combusken to hit Altaria super effectively; (SC) however, this provides little coverage compared to Hidden Power Electric otherwise, not to mention specially defensive Altaria is also not 2HKOed unless Stealth Rock are is up (RC) and Altaria is a lot less common than Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Jellicent. Thunder Punch is an option on Swords Dance variants that allows Combusken to threaten Jellicent and Qwilfish without them being significantly weakened or removed first; (SC) however, (AC) this prevents Combusken from running Protect, (AC) which will make it harder to accrue safe Speed boosts.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water-types**: (dashes to colons) Certain Water-type Pokemon such as Jellicent and Qwilfish resist Combusken's STAB combination. Gastrodon can also wall special attacking Combusken sets and can check Swords Dance sets not running Fightinium Z. Assault Vest Lanturn can also be problematic for special attacking Combusken sets, as Focus Blast is only a 4HKO, while Lanturn can OHKO Combusken in return with Scald.

**Faster Pokemon**: Despite its ability, due to Combusken's low initial Speed (RC) enables Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Dodrio and Primeape are able to outspeed and revenge kill it even after two Speed boosts. Priority users such as Carracosta, Floatzel, and Hitmonchan are also capable of revenge killing Combusken, after though Hitmonchan needs (not sure how else to make sense of Hitmonchan mention) some chip damage from entry hazards or setting Substitutes in Hitmonchan's case.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Specially defensive Pokemon such as Clefairy, Carbink, and Altaria are capable of walling Combusken's special attacking set, even with Toxic Spikes present provided Carbink has Rest, with the former two also using it as set up setup fodder.

Flamethrower can be run over Fire Blast for a more accurate Fire-type STAB attack to more reliably clean late-game and Toxic poison stall foes more easily thanks to its higher PP. The lower damage output can cause Combusken to struggle to claim KOs, however, such as the 2HKO on Silvally-Fairy after Stealth Rock. Hidden Power Ice is an option instead of Hidden Power Electric that allows Combusken to hit Altaria super effectively; however, this provides little coverage compared to Hidden Power Electric otherwise, not to mention specially defensive Altaria is not 2HKOed unless Stealth Rock is up and.(AP) Furthermore,(AC) Altaria is a lot less common than Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Jellicent. Thunder Punch is an option on Swords Dance variants that allows Combusken to threaten Jellicent and Qwilfish without them being significantly weakened or removed first;(remove semicolon, repetitive structure of x however y) however, but this prevents Combusken from running Protect, which will make it harder to accrue safe Speed boosts.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Pokemon**: Despite its ability, Combusken's low initial (same reasoning as before) Speed enables Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Dodrio and Primeape to outspeed and revenge kill it even after two Speed boosts.
