SS OU Conk and Mixed Pult Balance— peaked 1846, #93

Introduction

Everyone and their mother is using Weavile these days. I wanted to build a team around Conk, who exploits most of the checks to him with Guts + Close Combat or Ice Punch. This is especially devastating when combined with Future Sight. In fact, every single pokemon in the tier barring Slowbro and Corviknight KO'd with one of Conk's moves + Future Sight, and both of those take over 80%.

This team peaked at #93 including wins against some of the top players on ladder. I laddered under the name herozenta. Here's proof of peak:

Teambuilding Process
:conkeldurr:
The pokemon this team is built around. Conkeldurr's CC is one of the most powerful moves in the game right now. It's almost as strong as Banded Victini V-Create without the drawback of being locked into a move, and he destroys fatter teams.

:conkeldurr: :weavile:
Conk excels at getting rid of Corviknight and crippling Tapu Fini with Knock Off. So, I added Weavile, whose Adamant SD set can clean once those pokemon have been adequately chipped.

:conkeldurr: :weavile: :slowking-galar:
I needed something to break Pex, so added Glowking with Future Sight. Future Sight + CC from Conk also OHKOs every single pokemon in the tier that isn't psychic or ghost or a Spdef fairy like Primarina and some variants of Clefable. I chose Glowking over Slowbro or Slowking because I would rather have a pokemon that checks fairies like Unaware Clef, Tapu Koko and Tapu Fini, who are difficult for Weavile and Conk to handle.

:conkeldurr: :weavile: :slowking-galar: :landorus-therian:
This team is currently weak to Zeraora and also lacks rocks. The obvious solution is Lando.

:conkeldurr: :weavile: :slowking-galar: :landorus-therian: :dragapult:
Dragapult was kind of slapped on as something that could check SD Kart and also sweep in its own right (benefitting from Weavile and Conk weakening its checks), but it quickly became a star of the team. Dragapult is just so threatening that you can bluff one set and then sweep with another, which is the gameplan here.

:conkeldurr: :weavile: :slowking-galar: :landorus-therian: :dragapult: :scizor:
I needed something that could take hits from Melmetal and Defog. So, I chose Scizor, however, this pokemon quickly became setup fodder for many pokemon and also couldn't even beat CB Melm 1v1.

:conkeldurr: :weavile: :slowking-galar: :landorus-therian: :dragapult: :ferrothorn:
I tried a hazard stacking variant with Ferrothorn (and put defog on Lando) but he felt too passive. Couldn't beat Melm with Superpower, becomes setup fodder, also hated trading spikes with Ferrothorn because half my team is very weak to spikes.

:conkeldurr: :weavile: :slowking-galar: :landorus-therian: :dragapult: :toxapex:
This had the best results. Pex has insane longevity, can get up hazards, and has Haze. The team was finally complete.

Team Description
:ss/conkeldurr:
Conkeldurr @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Ice Punch
- Close Combat
- Mach Punch

- Knock Off
Conk is one of the hardest hitting wallbreakers in OU right now that takes advantage of common cores and destroys them. Really only Fini and Pex can switch into this and Fini doesn't really like getting its lefties knocked. Lando-T is a blanket check to a lot of physical attackers especially on offense, so I put Ice Punch to destroy him on the switch. More often than not, if Lando is gone, you pretty much just win with a combination of Weavile, Pult, and Conk, especially if there is no Pex on the opposing team. I considered Drain Punch over CC for longevity, but I think the immediate breaking power is what allows Conk to do such massive damage to things like Corv and Quagsire, who the team otherwise would have issues with. Guts Conk is also a fantastic status absorber and very good at beating things like Zapdos without Hurricane, and at using priority Mach Punch for rain, sand, and hail.

Conk is excellent against offense as his Mach Punch is great for revenge killing things like Weavile and Zeraora, and just dumpsters stall in tandem with Future Sight. Max speed so you outspeed all Corviknight before they u-turn. Here are some calcs:

Relevant Calcs:
252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 255-301 (63.9 - 75.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 164+ Def Landorus-Therian: 316-376 (82.7 - 98.4%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 211-249 (52.2 - 61.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 273-322 (69.2 - 81.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 200 Def Clefable: 174-204 (44.1 - 51.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Some replays (there are more later but here are some focused on Conk)

:ss/weavile:
Weavile @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Triple Axel
- Knock Off
- Ice Shard

Weavile's primary role is to destroy the Psychic types that resist CC + Future Sight. So Mew, the Slowtwins, Tapu Lele. He also provides incredibly important defnesive utility for Lele, making him think twice about clicking Psyshock into Glowking. This is important because Lele otherwise destroys our team.

Weavile also forces Fini to switch in and take rocks or tspikes. He forces Corv to switch in, which you can use to double to Conk and fry him with CC. Weavile is also our check to Torn; even though it's Adamant you can still take a hit and OHKO back. It can also beat Scald-less Toxapex 1v1 by stalling him out of Haze with Pressure. Usually Weavile goes for trades to set up for a Pult sweep, and forces switches and thus entry hazard damage.

:ss/slowking-galar:
Slowking-Galar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Def / 40 SpA / 80 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Future Sight
- Sludge Bomb
- Flamethrower

- Scald / Earthquake
Glowking is very simple: take hits and fire off Future Sight for Conk and Weavile to abuse. Spread poison with Sludge Bomb, force switches, roast Ferrothorn with Flamethrower. This it the classic Slowking spread with a little more pumped into defense so it's easier to take Psyshock. Glowking also offers a solid Rillaboom check as he resists Glide and can follow up with Sludge Bomb. EQ is an option over Scald to ease the Heatran matchup but I have found Scald useful for spreading burn.

:ss/landorus-therian:
Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 164 Def / 92 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Defog

- U-Turn / Smack Down / Knock Off
Like Glowking, Lando is simple. Get up rocks, defog the opponent's rocks, U-turn for momentum. SpDef Lando is in this metagame but PhysDef is better for this team that already has Glowking and Pex. I used Smack Down for a while for Skarmory and Corviknight, but Conk and Glowking are enough for them and the marginal utility is pretty low. U-Turn is the best move for Dragonite, as you can switch into Weavile after an intimidate for free, and also come in on Zeraora and u-turn out of that. Knock is an option for Specs Dragapult but I still like U-Turn pivot into Weavile or Pex.

:ss/dragapult:
Dragapult @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Darts
- Phantom Force

- Flamethrower
Classic DD Dragapult, except with Flamethrower instead of disable or sub. Many offensive teams have Kart or Ferrothorn as physical checks to Dragapult, but they no longer are with Flamethrower. It ohkos Kart and 2HKOs every Ferrothorn after rocks. Naughty over Lonely so Pult can take an Ice Shard from Weavile or a Knock from Ferrothorn better. Dragapult has some insane replays, as you'll see.

:ss/toxapex:
Toxapex @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Knock Off / Scald
- Recover
- Haze

- Toxic Spikes
It's the Pex. TSpikes cripple Fini and force Corv to Defog, allowing Conk to come in and CC. I needed a good physical answer to Dragonite, Melmetal, and other physical attackers and Pex is incredible at that. Scald vs. Knock Off isn't a huge deal, pretty much just personal preferences if you want to take items or fish for burns. Pex is superior to Ferrothorn and Scizor, who I also tried, because of more reliable recovery and a better defensive typing for this team. Without Pex, my team is relatively weak to Urshifu and Weavile, but with Pex, the matchup isn't too terrible.

How to Use + Replays
Basically the design of the team is to kill pult and weavile's checks with Conk and Future Sight and then have them sweep.

This team is typical balance, go for entry hazards and use your offense threats to force switches and predict. Abuse regenerator and Lando U-Turn and play aggressively with the sweepers. Also, bluff specs on Dragapult with flamethrower when you can. It conditions the opponent to sit on it with a special wall, only to get roasted by DD. Make sure that Fini is at a low enough percent for Phantom force to kill with leftovers recovery before you click DD. Don't lead Lando is you see a Gapdos, and keep Pex healthy if you see Urshifu. other than that just have fun!

Here are some replays of the team in action!

Threatlist
:blacephalon:
Specs Shadow Ball is very threatening for this team as the answer is Weavile, who isn't a real resist. Usually I'll have to sack something and then go for SD with Weavile as they switch the ghost out. This strategy is difficult, however, if the opponent also has a healthy check to Weavile. Conkeldurr can take one and click Knock Off, but usually something has to die when these pokemon come out if they're specs. Scarf isn't too hard to deal with because Pex and Glowking together can eat hits.

:heatran:
I have mostly given up on trying to switch into this pokemon and focused on trying to out-offense it instead. It feels like the only real switch in the tier is Tyranitar. Everything else gets beaten by Magma Storm + Taunt + Toxic + Earth Power. Conk can kill, Lando can kill, Glowking can chip it a lot, Pult can chip it. There's no counter, you just need to play smart around it. Suspect this demon please.

:weavile:
SD Jolly Weavile destroys my team. The check is Conk's Mach Punch and Lando -> Pex for Haze, but those are pretty unreliable because Conk tends to get worn down over the course of the game and Pex without Scald loses the 1v1 by getting Pressure stalled out of Hazes.

:volcarona:
This demon comes in on Slowking, forcing me to switch to dragapult. The funny thing is that even if he switches into a Quiver Dance, Pult can still eat a hit, dd, and KO it with darts. If this thing is on the team, make sure you keep pult and conk alive as they are your checks.

Less threatening:
:ninetales-alola: :arctozolt:
Hail can be kind of hard to fight as you have to be smart with predictions, but honestly I think it's fine. Hail is weak to rocks and +1 Pult will outspeed and ohko both zolt and ninetales with darts and phantom force after rocks, respectively. Hail teams also generally don't have Conk's checks (Fini, Pex) because they are worn down by hail or don't fit the playstyle. And Conk of course has Mach Punch to destroy Zolt.

:zapdos-galar:
Banded Zapdos can be tough. You have to make predictions but if you do it's not a huge deal. Weavile kills it and sets up on it if you read the switch, Pex helmet hurts a lot, Glowking lives and can burn it, Pult outspeeds and kills after Brave Bird chip. Scarf is irrelevant because it is entirely walled by Pex.

Room for improvement
Honestly I think the majority of games I lose are because of my mistakes as a player rather than the team. However, I've been thinking about changing the pex set to one with more spdef to ease the burden that ghost spam can have. Additionally, a well-played Volcarona can give me trouble, as I need to use Dragapult to break it. i think this problem could also be resolved by putting some spdef on lando or pex, but i'm not sure.

Importable + Closing Thoughts
Conkeldurr is a really fun mon to use as you can do massive damage to almost anything. clicking Ice Punch as Lando switches in or 1v1ing a corviknight feels so good, and sets up for some easy sweeps with Weavile and Dragapult. I hope yall try this team out and let me know what you think!

Love the team! Looks super sick, I've seen it on ladder before. Mach Punch and Vaccume wave are super threatening (fighting prio as a whole in OU) even from lesser mons as we've seen such as Lucario :Lucario: or Conkeldurr :Conkeldurr:, so I'm glad this idea came to a successful fruition for you.

I would say that SpD Lando :Landorus-Therian: would suit this team more than Def, actually. It means acting as both a clean pivot and overall defensive demon more consistently than Def sets which struggle against fire type nukes like Heatran :Heatran:, Specs Blacephalon :Blacephalon:, and Volcarona :Volcarona:. In addition to this, it is more congruent with its defensive core VS defensive variants of Zapdos :Zapdos: with Hurricane (And flying STAB mons as a whole that can be threatening to the longevity of your team such as Tornadus :Tornadus-Therian:). To add, it also does quite nicely VS Zapdos in rain which can be lifesaving if you need a pivot to Weavile :Weavile: in order to beat it.

252 SpA Zapdos Weather Ball (100 BP Water) vs. 240 HP / 176+ SpD Landorus-Therian in Rain: 286-338 (75.4 - 89.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

However, if you bump into either Life Orb or Specs Zapdos, Slowking Galar :Slowking-Galar: is still your best bet against variants with Life Orb as they have a highly favorable chance of killing you, and Specs is guaranteed a KO.

:SS/Landorus-Therian:

This set maximizes SpD bulk while maintaining the ability to outspeed Bisharp :Bisharp:.

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 240 HP / 176 SpD / 92 Spe
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Stealth Rock
- Defog

This set also helps with Blacephalon as its Overheat is a nasty Landorus nuke that completely invalidates Landorus as a defensive presence from Specs sets. Be weary, it still has a very favorable chance to OHKO after rocks.

252 SpA Choice Specs Blacephalon Overheat vs. 240 HP / 176+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 318-375 (83.9 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Blacephalon Overheat vs. 240 HP / 176+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 318-375 (83.9 - 98.9%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

As for Heatran, it is always guaranteed a 3HKO, at least it isn't a 2HKO.

0 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 240 HP / 176+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 121-144 (31.9 - 37.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock, Leftovers recovery, and trapping damage

Volcarona.

252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 240 HP / 176+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 135-160 (35.6 - 42.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
16 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 240 HP / 176+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 114-135 (30 - 35.6%) -- 31.5% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

(Smack Down variants)

0 Atk Landorus-Therian Smack Down vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Volcarona: 280-332 (90 - 106.7%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO (No investment in Def would make this a 50% to OHKO).
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Smack Down vs. 248 HP / 156 Def Volcarona: 228-272 (61.1 - 72.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Hope this helped some! :)
