Diglett (NU) [DONE]

[Overview]
Diglett is an extremely metagame-defining and unique Pokemon in NU because of its ability Arena Trap, which allows it to trap and remove many key threats in the tier, including Flareon, Pikachu, and Pupitar, as well as weakened Hitmonchan and Sableye. It also possesses a great Speed tier, making it one of the best revenge killers available, and it has good coverage and just enough offensive power to get the job done. However, Diglett has almost no defensive utility at all, making it difficult to directly switch into Pokemon it would want to trap.

[SET]
name: Trapper
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Sludge Bomb
move 4: Double-Edge / Toxic
item: Choice Band
ability: Arena Trap
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Arena Trap is what sets Diglett apart from the other Ground-types in the tier that are more bulky and powerful, allowing it to strategically remove many Pokemon in the tier. Diglett's only job is to trap and remove the opponent's Pokemon. Therefore, EVs are placed fully into Attack and Speed with a Jolly nature to make it as fast and powerful as possible, Speed tying with Plusle and outspeeding a crowded base 90 Speed tier with Pokemon like Pikachu, Golbat, Ponyta, Venomoth, and Vigoroth. Earthquake + Rock Slide provide EdgeQuake coverage that lets Diglett hit the Flying-types that it cannot trap with its ability. Sludge Bomb provides a way for Diglett to damage Grass-types such as Tangela and Bellossom, though both need to be significantly weakened and Sunny Day must not be in effect before Diglett attempts to trap them. Double-Edge provides good, powerful neutral coverage that can help clean up at the end of the game, provided there are no Ghost-types remaining on the opponent's side. Toxic can be used to badly poison Pokemon that would normally switch out to avoid Toxic, such as Sableye and Vigoroth. Hidden Power Bug can be used over Sludge Bomb for more consistent damage to Chimecho, but it hits Grass-types for significantly less damage.

[ADDITIONAL SET COMMENTS]
Diglett is extraordinarily frail and is best used as a revenge killer for Pokemon like Flareon and Mawile, as well as weakened Pokemon that need to be finished off. Scouting for Baton Pass, phazing moves, and attacks that can KO Diglett is very important. Despite Mawile being something that Diglett wants to trap and remove, it can easily Baton Pass straight out of trapping if Diglett hard switches into it. Diglett also risks getting hit by an attack, and while Diglett will barely survive an uninvested Brick Break from full, it will always be KOed by Hidden Power Steel. As a result, Diglett appreciates Baton Pass support from Pokemon such as Mawile, Plusle, and Venomoth to allow it to get in safely. Mawile in particular is useful for its ability to lure in Flareon, which Diglett can trap and remove effectively. Plusle can lure in Pupitar and weakened Roselia, so Spikes support is very useful. Diglett appreciates Spikes support from Pokemon like Roselia and Glalie, as it helps Diglett get Pokemon into range of Earthquake to be removed. Diglett is unable to trap Flying-types and Pokemon with the ability Levitate, most notably Chimecho.

[Other Options]
Diglett could potentially run an Adamant nature to help secure KOs on bulky Pokemon like Metang, but it then fails to outspeed the multitude of Pokemon with a base 90 Speed stat. Substitute and Liechi Berry can be used to give Diglett a damage boost versus faster foes and the ability to switch moves, but this combination is sometimes unreliable factoring Spikes or prior chip damage.

[Checks and Counters]
Diglett is extremely weak, and even resisted attacks can KO it. Additionally, almost anything faster than Diglett can revenge kill it. The best way to deal with Diglett is to not bring Pokemon weak to it and have Pokemon that can set up on Choice-locked Diglett's Earthquake. Chimecho is unable to be trapped by Diglett and is able to set up on Choice-locked Diglett's Earthquake, and Sunny Day + Solar Beam users like Bellossom and Tangela can as well. Many defensive Pokemon like Sableye and Wailord can survive Diglett's relatively weak attacks and take advantage of Diglett's pathetic defenses.

sludge bomb is better than hp bug. The main thing you're trying to trap for which EQ is not the correct move is Bellossom and Tangela, against which Sludge Bomb does much more damage. Higher damage output against Chimecho isn't important because you don't trap it anyway.

As for the last move, Toxic is ok, but you could also go with a generic damage output move like Double Edge, with which Diglett could in the right circumstances clean late game (after it has already removed their rock/steel with EQ!) if they have no Ghost.

Agree with Sludge Bomb and D-E. D-E is good for a late-game scenario where the opponent has like a low health Chimecho and Whiscash left, making the other moves unable to sweep.

i thought the arena trap not trapping ghosts was not implemented in adv?

also you could probably list plusle (and maybeee? Furret cause it lures in normal resists?) as a partner

Idr if sludge hits cactrune SE but that would be another bonus for hp bug

As for checks and counters, w the way u play dig, idt defining checks and counters is easy, ig as checks u list everything that is faster thanks to its bulk, and literally any grass resist once its locked into quake, also chime and haunter probably

E: dotn u also trap rose after literally the smallest amount of chip?

You'll have to focus on revenge killing Diglett in the checks and counters section since you by all accounts can't counter it if it successfully traps its target, but I would also emphasize the importance of proper scouting with potential Diglett targets like Flareon and Mawile via Baton Passing or Roar in Flareon's case.

OO can be as bare minimum as you please since the only thing Diglett should be doing is its CB set, although you could mention a Liechi Berry + Sub set.

- Toxic can be used to poison things that would normally switch out to avoid a Toxic, such as Sableye or Lickitung.
After a second reading I get what you mean here, but just make sure it doesn't sound like you're saying they're trying to switch out of Diglett lol. Also Lickitung generally won't care about Toxic because it should always have Heal Bell, so I would mention something else

The best way to “counter” Diglett is 1) don’t bring things weak to it, especially not 2+ if you can avoid it, and 2) bring something that can set up on the CB EQ. Could be cm Chimecho, could be a sunnybeamer, etc.

Have something that sufficiently grabs momentum as to punish your opponent for locking into it.

It also (flow) possesses a great speed Speed tier, making it one of the best revenge killers available, and it has good coverage and just enough offensive power to get the job done. However, Diglett has almost no defensive utility at all, making it difficult to directly switch into things Pokemon it would want to trap.

[SET COMMENTS]
Arena Trap is what sets Diglett apart from the other Ground-types in the tier that are more bulky and powerful, allowing it to strategically remove many Pokemon in the tier. Diglett's only job is to trap and remove the opponent's Pokemon. (but you mention in the overview that it's also a revenge killer? does trapper = revenge killer in the context of Diglett?) Therefore, EV's EVs are placed fully into Attack and Speed with a Jolly nature to make it as fast and powerful as possible,(AC) Speed tying with Plusle and outspeeding a crowded base 90 Speed tier with Pokemon like Pikachu, Golbat, Ponyta, Venomoth, and Vigoroth. Earthquake + Rock Slide provide EdgeQuake coverage that lets it Diglett hit the Flying-types that it cannot trap with its ability. Sludge Bomb provides a way for Diglett to damage Grass-types such as Tangela and Bellossm Bellossom, thought though both need to be significantly weakened before attempting to be trapped trap them, and Sunny Day cannot be in effect. Double Edge provides good,(AC) powerful neutral coverage that can help clean up at the end of the game, given that there are no Ghost-types remaining on the opponent's side. Toxic can be used to badly poison things Pokemon that would normally avoid Toxic, such as Sableye or and Vigoroth. (I'm confused here; do you mean that these Pokemon would normally just switch out to avoid being badly poisoned by something like say, Flareon? Needs clarification imo) Hidden Power Bug can be used over Sludge Bomb for more consistent damage to Chimecho, but it hits Grass-types for significantly less damage.

[ADDITIONAL SET COMMENTS]
Diglett is extraordinarily frail,(RC) and is best used as a revenge killer for things Pokemon like Flareon or and Mawile, or as well as weakened Pokemon that need to be finished off. Scouting is very important for various sets to avoid Diglett, such as attacking, Baton Pass, and Phazing. A Jolly nature allows Diglett to be as fast as possible, speed tying Plusle and outspeeding a crowded base 90 Speed tier with Pokemon like Pikachu, Golbat, Ponyta, Venomoth, and Vigoroth. (frankly I'm not sure if there's a "correct" location for mention of evs and nature, but they should be next to each other at the very least imo) Scouting for Baton Pass, phazing moves, and attacks that can KO Diglett is very important. (previous wording was very awkward and hard to determine the meaning of) Despite Mawile being something that Diglett wants to trap and remove, Mawile it can easily Baton Pass straight out of trapping if Diglett hard switches into Mawile it. It Diglett also risks getting hit from by an attack, and while Diglett will barely survive an uninvested Brick Break from full,(AC) it will always be KO'd KOed by Hidden Power Steel. Diglett appreciates Baton Pass support from Pokemon such as Mawile, Plusle,(AC) and Venomoth,(RC) to allow it to get in safely. Mawile in particular is useful for its ability to lure in Flareon,(AC) which Diglett can trap and remove effectively. Plusle can lure in Pupitar and weakened Roselia, which is particularly useful if Spikes are up. (why is this useful? I personally can't tell by reading the analysis) Diglett appreciates Spikes support from Pokemon like Roselia and Glalie, as it helps it (unless this 'it' is supposed to refer to Diglett; in that case, just change to 'Diglett') get Pokemon into range of Earthquake to be removed. Diglett is unable to trap Flying-types and Pokemon with the ability Levitate, most notably Chimecho. (therefore...? this point seems unfinished)

[Other Options]
Diglett could potentially run an adamant Adamant nature to help secure KOs on bulky Pokemon like Metang, but it then fails to outspeed the multitude of Pokemon with a base 90 Speed stat. Substitute and Liechi Berry can be used to give Diglett a damage boost versus faster opponents with foes and the ability to switch moves, but this combination is sometimes unreliable factoring Spikes or prior chip damage.

[Checks and Counters]
By nature of its trapping ability, Diglett doesn't have many Pokemon that will be able to switch out from its very targeted trapping.(are you trying to say something about how you can't just bring in a counter to Diglett when it's in the process of trapping and removing? as all stands, this sentence is redundant, self-explanatory, and doesn't rly add anything at first glance) However, it Diglett is extremely weak,(AC) and even resisted attacks can KO Diglett it. Almost Additionally, almost (flow) anything faster than Diglett can revenge kill it. The best way to deal with Diglett is to not bring Pokemon weak to it,(RC) and have Pokemon that can set up on a Choice-locked Diglett's Earthquake. Chimecho is unable to be trapped by Diglett and it is able to set up on a choice-locked Choice-locked Diglett's Earthquake, and SunnyBeamers Sunny Day + Solar Beam users (SunnyBeamers = not official word) like Bellossm or Bellossom and Tangela can as well. Many defensive Pokemon (examples?) can survive Diglett's relatively weak attacks and fire off attacks on take advantage of (you attack the Pokemon itself, not its defenses) Diglett's pathetic defenses.

p sure these analyses do credits sections, so do that here too
