Board Game Diplomacy: European Disunion - Fall 2005

The year is 1994. Three years on from the collapse of the Soviet Union, Europe faces an uncertain future. With the demise of the great communist threat, the United States has no interest in continuing to act as Europe's protector, preferring to focus on domestic issues. Their withdrawal caused the collapse of NATO, to the point that it's basically as dead as the Warsaw Pact. Fledgling notions of a European Union never got off the ground as each of the major powers sought to consolidate their own influence. Slowly but surely, the continent sinks back into its old ways, adopting the kind of power politics from before the two world wars. The big dogs are playing poker, and the small powers are left to be divvied up among them like mere chips. Britain, France, Germany and Italy return as great powers, while Spain also presents a new challenge with their involvement. Further east, a new Russian Federation must reckon with independent Polish and Ukrainian neighbors, Turkey revives their long-dormant imperial ambitions, and Egypt rises up from beneath the Mediterranean to claim their own slice of the pie. How can such a cocktail of hungry sharks create anything but all-out war?

For a rundown on the basic rules of Diplomacy, check out the official rulebook!

For info about the Modern variant in particular, check out the UK Diplomacy Archive to see articles from its creator, Vincent Mous!

If you want to spectate the game with full info, chat with other Diplomacy players, and be notified about future games, come join our Discord server! https://discord.gg/vydanhnUxr

Important Notes:
  • Please follow all Smogon and Circus Maximus forum rules, both here and in the Discord.
  • The game will use the Modern Diplomacy II variant map made for ten players.
  • Powers will be assigned to players at random after the sign-up period.
  • Private communication is key to success in Diplomacy, but I want to keep it centralized in one place for a better postgame and spectator experience. Therefore, joining the game Discord is mandatory for players: https://discord.gg/mRMXhShstB. There will still be a game thread where players will also be free to post.
  • Orders should be given to me privately on Smogon or Discord before each specified deadline. If you fail to do this, it will be treated as an NMR (No Moves Received) and all of your units will hold in place.
  • Spring and Fall order phases will last for 48 hours each after the previous results have been posted in the game thread. Retreat and build phases will last for 24 hours each. Deadlines will not be extended to accommodate late order submissions, but the game may be paused for a certain period if at least 2/3 of Powers vote for it.
  • I will be using WebDiplomacy to process orders and adjudicate the game, with screenshots of the board being posted in the game thread each turn.
  • If you miss multiple phases of orders in a row, I will sub you out or find you a partner to help you finish the game.
  • You are not allowed to screenshot OR copy-paste chat logs for use in the game. If I catch someone doing this, they will be warned and then subbed out if it happens again.
Unique Rules:
  • This is a Build Anywhere variant. Players will be allowed to build new units in any vacant supply center they own.
  • Due to the significantly higher center count of Modern, 33 supply centers will be required for a solo win.
  • Cairo, being the home of the Suez Canal, works the same way as Kiel/Hamburg and Constantinople/Istanbul do: fleets can freely pass through them without any concern for coasts.
  • Draws can be proposed at any time during a Spring or Fall turn. Once the draw is proposed, I will ask each player privately if they would like to end the game; if the vote is unanimous, the game will end. Draws will include all survivors.
Player List:
1. pulsar512b + Aura Guardian as Turkey
2. M2H + Lechen + DoggoLost as Poland
3. bluedoom as Russia
4. thetwinmasters as Ukraine
5. JALMONT + LonelyNess as Britain
6. CrreamyKitty + ImaginaryNeon as Germany
7. skippergamez Duskfall98 as Spain
8. Dead by Daylight + sunny004 as Italy
9. Alice Kazumi + UncleSam as France
10. theironpikachu + Yoru97 as Egypt

It is now Spring 1994. Powers should submit orders to me by Thursday, January 30th, at 9PM PST (GMT-8). I'm adding an extra day to the first turn so everyone has extra time to chat and learn the map, and so I only have to process one turn over this coming weekend, which is extremely busy for me.

Spring 1994 Moves
After lengthy negotiation that may or may not mean absolutely nothing after the rest of the players see their moves, each country begins to enact their own personal plan for continental domination. Who's going to set the tone, and how?

Looking at the moves, one's gaze is immediately drawn to Austria, where Germany and Italy have a polite dispute over who should be on the other's border. Other notable areas include Eastern Mediterranean (neither see any action), the Black Sea (Ukraine is the only power to enter either side), Volga (a Ukrainian army thrusts in like they're LARPing the current war), Navarra (the French fleet patrols the Spanish coast instead of heading for open water) and Bielorussia (Poland supports themselves in to guard against a bounce that never comes).

Fireworks are already going off in every direction! The four-build Italians get an instant reaction from Turkey, while France continues to clash with Spain, Britain positions around Scandinavia, and Poland looks to turn on two peaceful neighbors in Germany and Ukraine… it’s a bold strategy Cotton, let’s see if it pays off!

Fall 1995 Moves
More conflict shows itself as the fight for land and glory continues! Poland takes a massive chunk out of Ukraine while Italy takes a bite out of them in return; Russia consolidates an iron grip on Scandinavia with British and Polish help; France continues their thrust into the German heartland while Germany rebuffs the British advance from the spring; Italy and Egypt simply can't decide who gets Tunisia, which works to Spain's benefit; and Turkey braces for impact from a combined Russo-Italian-Ukrainian attack, with mixed results.

Winter 1995 Builds
Builds always tell a story. Germany makes the fun decision by keeping a fleet in Skagerrak, the ET continues to build up their formidable navy, Poland raises new armies to presumably expel Italy from their homeland, and France and Spain prepare for the next chapter of Iberian arm wrestling. 1996 is set to be even more exciting than years before!

You learn something new every day folks, and today I learned that they celebrate Thanksgiving in Russia! Why else would they be ordering an expensive Turkey dinner like this? In other news, Britain avenges their previous defeat at Hamburg, Poland continues to advance southwest, and we have no less than FOUR forced disbands this turn! Those soldiers and sailors had families, you callous bastards!

Germany is dead. Aside from a few local bureaucrats remaining in Saxony, nothing remains from the old state. A partition of the country, enacted by Britain, France and Poland, will administer the area for the forseeable future- WAAAAAAAAIT A MINUTE! Britain's been stabbed! Ladies and gentlemen, this may be the first significant instance of knife crime since the Polish invasion of Ukraine! The power dynamics of the board may now be fully upended! Meanwhile in the east, Italy consolidates their Balkan holdings, Russia reclaims their prized capital city, and Turkey wakes up to find not one, not two, but three foreign powers in their homeland! It's like the Treaty of Sevres all over again!

ImaginaryNeon CrreamyKitty thanks for playing guys, it's unfortunate that you ended up surrounded by most of the best players on the list. You guys have been very resilient so far despite your results in past games so I hope you'll keep going in the future.

It is now Winter 1996. Build orders should be submitted to me by Sunday, February 16th, at 9PM PST (UTC-8). Yes, that's today.

Winter 1996 Builds
It's a great year for naval contractors! France, Britain, Italy and Russia all ensure that the high seas will be far busier than they were over the winter. Given what's coming this year, I hope those boats have got some big guns!

Spring 1997 Moves
With the first players starting to fall off the board, everyone who remains is turning up the heat! France and Russia try to pry Britain's territorial waters away from them, Poland begins knocking on the door of the Balkans, and the Italy-Egypt naval war heats up even further! Watch the center of the board closely in the fall: France has previously worked with Italy against Germany, and with Poland against Britain; will they now take a side in the conflict between the two, or simply sit it out?
