About what talking tree said plus never knowing if someone is ghosting I want to propose a rule that allows a player to turn mod join on and ban linking anyone in to join the battle.
I don't think this is too much to ask for

I think this is a little radical, and I don't think you can entirely remove ghosting from the tournament scene as it is basically impossible to track (unless you get snitched or something), but I think it is definitely not a bad idea to enforce a modchat rule past a certain round (round 6 or something). Telling players what to do in-battle or posting calcs counts as ghosting. It becomes crazy in certain games (Social vs Mysterious M as a recent example), and I think this definitely should be punished.
 
we are not removing spectators to prevent ghosting, spectating tournament matches is one of the most fun parts of smogon. we'll just punish anyone who's too obnoxious in battle chat ( checkmater75 )
 
spectating is definitely fun, especially in hyped matches.
But I have been ghosted before in fun fights with out asking; people have randomly pm'd to tell me what my opponent will do, what there set is, ect.
Four different people did it when I fought braverious in bo9. and its happened in other random fights. I will not drop names because it wasnt a tour fight
I know other people have had this experience before too. It definitely makes me question if these people would do it in a tour fight
So at the cost of spectating, I think that giving a player a right to private battle is worth it
