DP Cradily

www.smogon.com/dp/pokemon/cradily

The current analysis is very outdated and doesn't even have an EVs section. So I basically did a whole revamp and added a set.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Cradily
[SET]
Name: Special Wall
Move 1: Rock Slide
Move 2: Recover
Move 3: Toxic
Move 4: Earthquake / Stealth Rock
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpD
Nature: Careful
Ability: Suction Cups

[SET COMMENTS]

Cradily becomes a great special wall with Sandstorm support. Not only does it have great all around defenses, but it also has decent typing and a useful ability, meaning that Cradily is able to switch into many of today's top special threats such as SpecsMence, Heatran, and Porygon-Z.

Rock Slide allows Cradily to deal damage to Salamence, and even with 0 Attack EVs, it still always 2HKOs the fearful dragon. It also guarantees an OHKO on Yanmega, which is quite useful as it 2HKOs you with Bug Buzz. Recover and Toxic are obvious choices on such a stallish Pokemon, but Confuse Ray may be used over Toxic if you are wary of any Guts user switching in to get an Atk boost. As a side note, Confuse Ray also affects Steel and Poison types which are immune to Toxic.

In the last slot, Earthquake or Stealth Rock may be used, depending on whether or not you already have a Stealh Rock user on your team. Earthquake does a number on Heatran and gives Cradily the great "QuakeSlide" offensive combo, but unless you're hitting your opponent super-effectively, you won't be doing much damage.

[SET]
Name: Rest Talk
Move 1: Rock Slide
Move 2: Earthquake / Swords Dance / Toxic
Move 3: Rest
Move 4: Sleep Talk
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 SpD
Nature: Careful
Ability: Suction Cups

[SET COMMENTS]

Although Cradily does have great health recovery in the form of Recover, it is still completely screwed over by most forms of status, including poison by Toxic Spikes and burn by Will-O-Wisp. This set helps to remedy that by getting rid of the status with Rest, and then attacking your opponent through the use of Sleep Talk.

Something else that makes this set very viable is the fact that Cradily can't be phazed away by Roar or Whirlwind thanks to its ability. That in itself allows you to stay in and stall out your opponent if they have no means to stat up or hit you hard with a STABed, super-effective attack. Toxic may also be used in that slot to keep your opponent's defensive Pokemon on their toes about staying in against you for too long.

Swords Dance may be used over Earthquake if you prefer to not just sit there and deal out mediocre damage.

[SET]
Name: Swords Dance
Move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
Move 2: Earthquake
Move 3: Swords Dance
Move 4: Recover
Item: Leftovers / Life Orb
EVs: 112 HP / 252 Atk / 144 Spe
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Suction Cups

[SET COMMENTS]

Thanks to Cradily's ability you can stay in and stat up as long as you want (or as long as your opponent lets you). In a similar manner as other "bulky sweepers", Life Orb may be used here to provide a nice boost to your attack, and it shouldn't hamper you that much as you have Recover to heal off any damage.

[SET]
Name: Protect
Move 1: Rock Slide
Move 2: Recover
Move 3: Toxic
Move 4: Protect
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 220 HP / 176 Def / 114 SpD
Nature: Careful
Ability: Suction Cups

[SET COMMENTS]

Although this set is eerily similar to the first one, it is geared for a different purpose. Protect allows it to scout out your opponent's moves, and then switch to an appropriate counter. Because the best way to do damage to Cradily is through a powerful Fighting move, which are most often used on choiced Pokemon, Cradily can now determine whether or not it can stay in rather than always switch out. It also aids along with the stalling nature of this Pokemon, wasting your opponents PP and possibly HP, while also restoring your own through Leftovers.

An advantage this set has over the one at the top is that it is actually able to beat a MixMence at full HP, although it does require some prediction. Because Brick Break won't do more than 60% to Cradily, you can Recover while he attacks, and then Protect the next turn to gain back the extra HP through Leftovers. Once he has been weared down enough by Sandstorm and Life Orb damage, you can Toxic him while he Roosts, and then continue stalling him out while he slowly succumbs to the poison.

[Other Options]

Cradily's movepool is very sparse, but it does have a few notable support moves that derserve a mention. Tickle lowers your opponent's Atk and Def by one stage, both reducing the damage you take from a physical attack and increasing the amount of damage you deal in return. Even though Cradily has good SpD and HP, Mirror Coat will still do a number on any Pokemon that tries to hurt you with a special move. Stockpile can be used to boost your Def and SpD to high levels, but because neither of Cradily's attacking stats are anything worth mentioning, it leaves you sitting there, prone to critical hits and status. Protect isn't only useful on the set by the same name; it can also be used with success on the first set if you don't need any of the primary options.

In terms of attacks, Cradily has few other options than those listed. Body Slam gives you a chance of paralyzing your opponent, and both Grass Knot and Energy Ball are decent STAB attacks on the special side.

[EVs]

Cradily's EVs are very general, and can be changed depending on your needs. In the Special Wall set, the EVs allow you to survive one Life Orbed Close Combat from Infernape. On the second set, they give you the best overall defenses (376 HP, 319 Def, and 381 SpD), allowing you to take hits from both sides of the spectrum. In the last set, Atk is maxed out, enough speed is provided to beat out no-speed Swampert, Porygon2, Magnezone, and Weezing, and the rest is poured into HP for good measure.

[Opinion]

Cradily improved tremendously during the shift from Advance to DP. Thanks to the Special Defense boost given to Rock types in a Sandstorm, this prehistoric plant has become a good counter to many of todays top special threats, including SpecsMence and Heatran. That isn't nearly enough for it to be top-tier, though; its poor movepool and only-decent typing hold it back from being so much more.

[Counters]

Because Cradily should only be used in Sandstorm (which is most prevalent in OU), it shouldn't be surprising that most of its counters are in fact OU Pokemon.

Both Skarmory and Forretress can set up spikes on Cradily, but both are also beaten by the Swords Dance set. Heracross and Hariyama can come in on Cradily with no regrets and can potentially get a Guts boost by Toxic. Lucario, who 4x resists Rock and is immune to Toxic, can switch in and 2HKO it, with either Close Combat or Aura Sphere.

Aside from those specific counters, Steel-types counter Cradily in general. Bronzong resists Rock Slide and is immune to both Toxic and Earthquake, and unless Cradily is running the Swords Dance set it won't be hurting anything much with Earthquake. Metagross can switch in and Meteor Mash Cradily into oblivion, and CM Jirachi can set up on Cradily and Wish away any damage. Likewise, Scizor can switch in and Swords Dance up. However, running the Swords Dance set allows Cradily to beat out many of these counters in the long run.

Last, status also counters Cradily. If Cradily is badly poisoned and isn't running the ResTalk set, it becomes death fodder. Being burnt isn't quite as bad, but it still slowly whittles down your health and cuts your already-poor Atk in half.

Hey starlight / atrocity / bad wolf / bam ur dead, nice to see you doing peer edits. I have a bunch of nitpicks that I'll be editing in here.

On the Special Wall set, wouldn't it make more sense to just max out HP and Special Defense to weather Special hits better? Or maybe enough to only take a certain amount of damage from MixMence's Brick Break?

(nitpicks will go here)

[SET]
Name: Special Wall
Move 1: Rock Slide
Move 2: Recover
Move 3: Toxic
Move 4: Earthquake / Stealth Rock
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpD
Nature: Careful
Ability: Suction Cups

Confuse Ray is a fairly poor status move, honestly. I don't see much use for it.

[SET COMMENTS]

Cradily becomes a great special wall with Sandstorm support. (I think it sounds better this way, less awkward.) It has great all around defenses decent typing and a useful ability, granting Cradily the ability to switch into many of today's top special threats such as Salamence, Heatran, and Porygon-Z. The double IT was awkward, so I mixed this up a bit too.

Rock Slide allows Cradily to deal serious damage to Salamence; even with 0 Attack EVs, it still always 2HKOs the fearful dragon. It also guarantees a OHKO on Yanmega, which is quite useful considering that it can 2HKO you with Bug Buzz. Recover and Toxic are obvious choices on such a stall-oriented (sounds better than "stallish") Pokemon, but Confuse Ray may be used over Toxic if you are wary of Guts users like Heracross. Confuse Ray also affects Steel and Poison types which are immune to Toxic.

In the last slot, Earthquake or Stealth Rock may be used, depending on whether or not your team has a Stealth Rocker. Earthquake does major damage to Heatran and gives Cradily great coverage, with Super-Effective hits compensating for his weak offensive stats.

(I'll try and help with the other sets later)

In the last slot, Earthquake or Stealth Rock may be used, depending on whether or not you already have a Stealh Rock user on your team. Earthquake does a number on Heatran and gives Cradily the great "RockSlide" offensive combo, but unless you're hitting your opponent super-effectively, you won't be doing much damage.

Stealh should be Stealth.

RockSlide should be Rock Slide.

Small nitpicks. I might post again with more if I find any.

EDIT: The only other thing I could find is that you called a set ResTalk. I know it was intentional, but isn't Rest Talk more formal?

Thanks to Cradily's ability, it can't be phazed out, allowing you to stay in and stat up as long as you want (or as long as your opponent lets you).off any damage.

This sentence seems to run on. That looks like a good spot for a comma.

Last, status also counters Cradily. If Cradily is burned and isn't running the ResTalk set, it becomes death fodder. Being burnt isn't quite as bad, but it still slowly whittles down your health and cuts your already-poor Atk in half.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think you mean (badly) poisoned in place of the first mention of being burned.

@Chris- Maxing out HP / SpD is probably pretty wasteful. If something is still going to 2HKO whether you use max or 96 (just be less of a 2HKO with max), it's not all that useful. Also maxing out HP / SpD will leave it very weak physically thus reducing its overall durability.

Just yesterday I was looking at the Cradily analysis thinking it was really outdated :P I think Protect should be listed in other options, between Confusion, Toxic and Sandstorm damage, along with Leftovers recovery Protect proves to be really useful.

this could be included somewhere I guess

I made this spread ages ago for a Careful Cradily that I wanted to beat both Specsmence and MixMence with. After running calcs from a 120 Attack LO Brick Break, Cradily couldn't win without Protect. so, this spread, with Protect, "beats" mixmence in a sandstorm. Switch between Recover and Protect while Sandstorm wears it down, when it roosts hit it with Toxic. if it stays in, rinse and repeat.

220 HP, 176 Defense, 114 Sp. Defense.

Thank God, I was beginning to think that nobody had noticed I'd posted this =\. I'll make as many of those edits as I can right now, but I'm actually going to school in just a couple minutes so I may not have time to make them all.

That's a nifty little set, Anti; I'll write up the spread and set comments for that when I get back.

I don't want to double post, but I've edited in the set Anti posted, and it looks decent enough.

Also, if a Pokemon only has one ability, I don't have to list it in this write-up, do I?

In the last slot, Earthquake or Stealth Rock may be used, depending on whether or not you already have a Stealh Rock user on your team. Earthquake does a number on Heatran and gives Cradily the great "RockSlide" offensive combo, but unless you're hitting your opponent super-effectively, you won't be doing much damage.

I believe you mean 'the great "QuakeSlide" offensive combo'.

Yeah I was thinking about that at school the other day, wondering if I'd indeed written RockSlide instead of QuakeSlide. Thanks for pointing that out ;).

This post is for Aldaron's and jrrrrrr's purposes ...

Keep this - I think the existing analysis could use a bit of a revamp.

This was pretty much finished and I made some slight modifications to it and is on site. This can be moved to the Peer Archive / Deleted / Whatever we are doing now.
