Arena: Charicific Valley

Deep within the cliffs in southern Johto lies the ancient Charicific Valley. Once just a sanctuary for Charizard this oasis found new life when its inhabitants discovered their Mega Evolutions. The long dormant volcano which engulfs the valley found new life and while eruptions are infrequent the heat is intense. These new conditions allowed the Charizard to reach their full potential as Dragons and this encouraged other Dragon's alike to train themselves in the valley. Now it acts as a haven for all draconic Pokemon, while others find the conditions harsh and near inhospitable.

Throughout the valley one might find rocks, water, grass and anything else that might be useful in a Pokemon battle. However the surrounding volcano produces an Intense Heat which covers the entire region and lasts infinitely. Intense Heat provides almost the same conditions as Sunlight however instead of reducing the power of Water moves it is Ice types which find it hard to prosper here. Their attacks will suffer from a reduction in power while Water attack are unaffected. The constant heat also makes it impossible for Pokemon to be frozen. Other weather conditions such a Sandstorm, Rain and Hail may be called in addition to Intense Heat and will have a four round duration, however Rain and Hail will require the respective weather rock to do so. Any use of the move Sunny Day of the Cloud Nine command will revert the weather back to solely Intense Heat.

Almost as prevalent as the Volcano within the valley is the gigantic Charizard statue underneath which battles are contested. The statue of such an ancient and majestic beast imbues a strong sense of pride in not only Charizard but all Pokemon who stand under it. As a result they will stand staunchly to defend it and cannot be forced to give up their ground. No Pokemon in the arena may be forced out so phazing moves have no effect. Roar and Whirlwind will fail entirely while Dragon Tail and Circle Throw will only deal damage. The item Red Card likewise has no effect. U-Turn, Volt Switch and Parting Shot may still be used as normal.

Finally, given it was Mega Evolution that gave the valley its newfound draconic power it is only natural that Charizard and other Pokemon which gain the Dragon typing through Mega Evolution find it easier to do so here. Any Pokemon with such traits may be brought by the Leader, and the Pokemon will be considered Mega Evolved in their Pokeball prior to send out. Battlers may bring two Mega Evolutions throughout the match and as battles are fought with two abilities trainers must specify which of their Pokemon's active abilities are to be replaced upon Mega Evolution if applicable.

Summary
  • The weather is Intense Heat with an infinite duration. Intense Heat acts as Sun but reduces the BAP of Ice typed attacks by 3 and has no effect on the BAP of Water typed attacks. Pokemon may not be frozen while Intense Heat is in effect. Sandstorm, Rain and Hail may be summoned for 4 rounds in addition to Intense Heat, but Rain and Hail need weather rocks to do so. Sunny Day or Cloud Nine command revert the weather to solely Intense Heat. All moves and abilities treat Intense Heat exactly as Sun.
  • Pokemon cannot be forced to switch out.
  • Pokemon which gain the Dragon typing through Mega Evolution may be brought by the Leader but must equip their Mega Stone, and are considered Mega Evolved in the Pokeball.
  • Nature Power calls Lava Plume, Camouflage turns the user Fire typed and Secret Power may burn. The arena is outdoors.
  • No other moves are restricted.

Well, here it is! The grand (re)opening of the Dragon Gym! [NOTE: Here is where we pretend that the super boring other battle that ended in DQ never happened] Let's see what ASB's newest Dragon Leader can do to keep his badge safe when one of ASB's very best comes calling. On to the teams!

On the Leader's side, we have deadfox081! I... don't really know a lot about him. Must be because I joined like two days ago, sry. What I do know is that he's hosting an LC tournament in a couple of months, so get hyped about that! Also, it appears that the best dragon-type there is is suspiciously missing from his team. #FreeHydreigon2015.
On a more serious note, however, Dracor the Dragonite's Multiscale gets the nod as an early MVP candidate due to a lack of clear-cut positive matchups for the Leader (at least that I can see). Dracor is probably the Leader's most dangerous Pokémon anyway (100+ moves + great stats + a stupidly good ability will do that for ya), and making a smart use of its Multiscale will be key for him going forward.

On the challenger's side, we have ASB's resident Fire-type Gym Leader, Frosty! Except he does Ice now, because his name is ice-related and people are stupid. Also, he's good at this whole "gym" thing, since he's apparently undefeated when challenging other people's gyms or something.

Also #2, his team has some pretty good matchups across the board, with every single one of the Leader's Pokémon being hit super-effectively by at least two of the Challenger's Pokémon. The key here is probably Hilda the (Mega) Gardevoir. With its Psychic STAB handling the Leader's Dragalge and its absurdly powerful Hyper Voices ripping through basically everything else, I get the feeling that Hilda will have at least 1KOC by the time this battle is over.

Leader: Heads | Challenger: Tails

(It's heads!)

How stuff will happen:
Leader deadfox081 sends out Pokémon with item and ability
Challenger Frosty sends out Pokémon with item and ability, and orders
Leader deadfox081 orders
YAS refs

PS: If you were expecting me to do the whole "bringing Pokémon to the battle you're reffing" thing, Mowtom-style, like I did in Maxim's gym, brief reminder that the leader's name involves foxes dying. Zelda would freak the fuck out. Poor thing.

Hyper Voice - Moonblast - Hyper Voice
IF
Dig AND without suspense AND not in a combo THEN Trick Room on the first instance AND push back
IF Taunt AND Haxorus isn't taunted THEN Magic Coat AND push back
IF P/E AND this sub wasn't activated on the action prior THEN Misty Terrain on the first instance, Reflect on the second and push back

"Well Cleaver, it's a little sad that you actually are the best matchup we have versus a Gardevoir and we still lose this badly head to head. I suppose all we can do is try something arguably crazy..."

Guillotine + Shadow Claw - Cool [Poison Jab] - Poison Jab + Giga Impact
IF your combination misses on action 1 THEN replace action 3 with Taunt
IF your combination is deemed infeasible THEN replace action string with Taunt - Dig - Iron Tail

NOTE: the Guillotine combination is on the basis that Aerial Ace + Guillotine has previously been used successfully and Shadow Claw is arguably more combinable with Guillotine on Haxorus than Aerial Ace

now all we need is a crit/poison/something to even get this to KO in the best of circumstances

So I was initially gonna say no to the combo, but the anime rendition of Shadow Claw does seem compatible with Guillotine

BEGIN ROUND 1!
---
Luck favors the bold, I guess. Especially when luck has a 79% chance of striking.

Anyways, we're off! The Leader goes balls to the wall with a couple of risky combinations in hopes that they can net him a quick ORKO, but he falls just short. Still, I get the feeling that he's more than happy about this upcoming trade, since a near-dead Gardevoir is about as good a result as he could expect from round one.

Hopefully for the Leader, luck also favors those who leave their mons sluggish and cooling down when ordering first.

Giga Impact's BAP rounds up to 16, meaning the entire combination deals 43.5 DMG and Gardevoir is left at a very frustrating 1 HP

"Great job Cleaver! I mean sure you're about to die unceremoniously now but at least we have barely any of a Gardevoir left to deal with."

Breaking news: Mega Gardevoir is a good Pokémon. Did anyone know about this already?

Anyways, Hilda is proving to be worth her weight in gold, as she manages to take a big chunk from the Leader's Noivern and even end the round with more HP than she had when it started. On the Leader's side, he's already 1 1/2 Pokémon behind (give or take, idk man), but on the bright side he just earned a medal for making the ref go 0-for-2 on his predictions on who he'd send out. (Seriously, I didn't quite expect Haxorus, and I definitely did not expect to see Noivern out next. I didn't expect to see Noivern at all, tbh)

Now, on a serious note, there's not a lot of positives for the Leader right now, what with him losing the turn order advantage and everything. At least he avoided a threatening Draining Kiss, which would have been even worse for him, and he's free from two of Gardevoir's most threatening attacks for one round thanks to that well-timed Torment, not to mention Substitute protecting Resonate from Pain Split and status shenanigans. And Hilda's Energy is quickly approaching zero, so maybe he's weathered the worst part of the Gardevoir storm. Maybe.

Body Slam Gardevoir. Truly, I have now seen it all. Is this even real? What is reality even?

What a time to be alive, kids. What a time to be alive indeed...

Also: the Leader tries his hardest to keep Resonate away from Hilda's attacks, hoping that the Fairy's low EN is enough to keep it in KO range of Noivern's Fly and Steel Wing. And indeed, Hilda eventually does EN KO, but not before regaining some health, breaking Resonate's Substitute, and unleashing a mighty physical combo that leaves Noivern close to fainting. Well, not as mighty as Cleaver's R1 combos, but you get the point.

Also #2: Never have I ever felt so confident in an MVP predict after four rounds as I do now. Hilda has come back from the brink of death at 1HP to take down half of the Leader's team. (Yes, even if someone else earns the KOC on Noivern, make no mistake: this kill was definitely Hilda's.) Sure, the Leader could still sweep the Challenger's team with Dragonite or something, but until that happens, this MVP award is Hilda's to lose.

Also #3: df, you could also do Megas: 0 and be done with it. I hear there's another leader who did that, but idk.

IF agility (evasive) AND in a combo AND with a damaging Steel-typed move AND the ref accepts it THEN Protect
IF p/e AND this sub wasn't played on the action prior THEN Tail Glow on the first instance, Spikes on the second

"Holy crap I found a loophole!"

Razor Wind - Razor Wind - Razor Wind + Heat Wave

Razor Wind said:
The user forms a whirlwind around themselves to attack their opponents. The whirlwind is formed at Priority +1, and unleashed at Priority -1. The user is freed from all trapping effects (including partial trapping) when the whirlwind is formed. Between these two phases, damaging attacks with 4 or less BAP before any modifiers (including multi-hit moves) miss the user entirely. The sharpness of the wind blade makes the attack more likely to result in a critical hit.

"Also Frosty those solutions sound great if you hadn't made both Charizard and Dragalge very unhappy prospects with Stratagem and Colossoil sitting on the bench"

Well, whaddaya know? This was supposed to be the round where the challenger pushed his enormous lead and got that much closer to getting a Dragon Badge. Instead, it's the Leader who seems primed to even the KO count next round. Also, how about his creative use of some obscure ASB side effects to keep Noivern alive and tear a huge hole into the challenger's prized Syclant? Kudos to him for not laying down in the face of a pretty big deficit and actually closing the gap a fair bit with a pretty creative play.

Good thing that the challenger's frozen Focus Band capped the amount of damage that Syclant took from Noivern's fiery-- oh, sorry. Apparently that's another gym.
