Dragonite & Friends (Pre-Bank OU)

Hello all,

I have been out of the competitive battle scene since many generations ago, but picked up a 3DS and Pokemon Y with the intention of jumping back in. However, since I've been gone for so long, I lack a lot of experience and knowledge when it comes to battling in the current gen. As mentioned in the thread title, this team is for pre-Pokebank OU. Any advice or criticism would be appreciated!

Mamoswine @ Focus Sash
Ability: Oblivious
Nature: Jolly
EV: 252 Atk // 4 Def // 252 Spe
-- Stealth Rock
-- Earthquake
-- Ice Shard
-- Icicle Spear

My anti-lead and Stealth Rock setter. Icicle Spear takes care of many Focus Sash users, while Earthquake and Ice Shard can take out many other leads. Stealth Rock is not necessary to put down right away, so Mamoswine can come in later as a revenge killer and possibly set up Rocks then, if he doesn't get them down on his first showing.

Dragonite @ Lum Berry
Ability: Multiscale
Nature: Adamant
EV: 252 Atk // 4 SpD // 252 Spe
-- Dragon Dance
-- Outrage
-- Fire Punch
-- Earthquake

My end-game sweeper. I love this guy, and he is what I built my team around. I considered putting Roost in the fourth slot, but think that the added coverage from Earthquake is probably the better choice. Also, I've heard some say that ThunderPunch may be a better choice over Fire Punch, so any advice on that would be appreciated.

Scizor @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
Nature: Adamant
EV: 248 HP // 252 Atk // 8 SpD
-- Bullet Punch
-- Brick Break
-- Pursuit
-- U-Turn

Revenge killer, wall breaker, and the first half of my VoltTurn core. As this is pre-Bank OU, I'm using Brick Break over Superpower, but this also helps in taking down the likes of Klefki with Screen support. The rest of the set is standard fare.

Rotom-W @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Levitate
Nature: Bold
EV: 252 HP // 228 Def // 28 SpA
-- Hydro Pump
-- Will-o-Wisp
-- Rest
-- Volt Switch

The second half of my VoltTurn core, and one of the best Pokemon in Sixth Gen OU. I have the bulky physical spread for the likes of Talonflame and other Gen 6 heavy-hitters. Since this is Pre-Bank OU, I'm practically forced to use ChestoRest, since Pain Split is unavailable on Rotom for now.

Starmie @ Life Orb
Ability: Analytic
Nature: Timid
EV: 252 SpA // 4 SpD // 252 Spe
-- Rapid Spin
-- Hydro Pump
-- Ice Beam
-- Thunderbolt

My Rapid Spinner, but also quite the offensive force with Life Orb + Analytic. Starmie also serves as another check to the fire types that would hurt Mamoswine and Scizor. I feel like Starmie could be switched for Excadrill, but I'm not sure if it's worth it to run him on a non-Sand team.

Gengar @ Gengarite
Ability: Shadow Tag
Nature: Timid
EV: 4 Def // 252 SpA // 252 Spe
-- Shadow Ball
-- Focus Blast
-- Sludge Bomb
-- Destiny Bond

Another revenge killer, who also serves as a Fairy-trapper for Dragonite. Not much to say here, this is a fairly common set for Mega-Gengar I think. Unsure if Destiny Bond or Substitute would be the better choice for his fourth move slot, though. Also, I haven't seen much mention of Mega-Gengar in this forum so far... which makes me worried that he may have already been banished to Ubers? Let me know if he has.

Like I said, any comments or criticism are much appreciated! I spent a good deal of time putting this team together, but if I'm missing something big please let me know! Thanks for your time.

I used a similar team based on Dragonite/M-Gengar. I'm going to assume here lvl. 50 pokemon. Here are some criticisms I have:

Try

Mamoswine Focus Sash/Adamant/Thick Fat
252 Atk/252 HP/4 Spe
SR/Earthquake/Ice Shard/Icicle Crash

Unless you have something you need to outspeed in mind, I think Adamant is overall better. Max speed jolly doesn't even outspeed neutral base 100s that have max speed EVs (dragonite/blaziken). You have priority in Ice Shard so making it hit harder is better IMO. Take Thick Fat over Oblivious because it's much more likely to be useful. I would take Icicle Crash over Icicle Spear, but they have about the same power so its not clear cut.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Starmie Choice Scarf/Timid/Natural Cure
252 SpA/252 Spe/4 HP

I think every team should have a scarf user to stop an already setup sweeper (e.g. Blaziken) and starmie is the best choice for this. I don't know why you would want to take analytic after having invested in max speed; this combination is lacking in synergy. Natural Cure lets you spin away toxic spikes and be healed after the switch out. MGengar can also do this, but there are times when you want to keep in unevolved to use levitate.

Excadrill could be a good replacement for Starmie but like Starmie, you already have type coverage for other types of moves
(Water/Ice, Ground/Steel). It does take on some threats better though (Aegislash). You might try:

Excadrill MoldBreaker/Adamant/Leftovers
EVs?
EQ/Rapid Spin/Rock Slide/Substitute/Swords Dance

The bad thing about this is that you will have 3 EQs on your team. Taking a Swords Dance means you forgo your ability to hit flying types, which means you have to take them out before hand. This set is more of a sweeper rather than revenge killer like starmie was, so if you don't think that Mamoswine or Scizors priority attacks can stop a setup sweeper and your bulkier pokemon can't take them either then this isn't the way to go.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that you should probably have at least one substitute somewhere on your team. MGengar doesn't really take substitute well without a Pain Split so your best bet would probably be on Dragonite. You lose a coverage move but more importantly you lose Multiscale, which is one of the main reasons why Dragonite is so powerful. You'd have to take leftovers or roost but then get confused at the end of outrage.

You might take Outrage/Fire Punch/Dragon Dance/Substitute w/ Leftovers and make sure that you get sub up so you can't be statused (or take out everything that can status you). Hit everything with Fire Punch until you're sure it's safe to outrage. You lose your ability to take on Aegislash though.

Try out both and see which ones seems more effective. Good luck!

In regards to your Mamo, why are you running oblivious instead of Thick Fat?

Analytic doesn't exist yet for Starmie until December, plus I would suggest Scald/Surf since missing a Hydro Pump can be really crucial sometimes. Thunderbolt seems redundant when you have a Rotom on your team, Psyshock would give you more coverage.

Also, I would like to add, I personally run Dazzling Gleam over Focus Miss because well... hits Dark, Fighting and Dragon. Destiny bond is a good choice, if your Gengar can't deal with anything, your Scizor should cover you

Everything else looks good.
