1v1 Dragonite [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2]

The Official Glyx

Banned deucer.
[OVERVIEW]

Dragonite is a valuable asset to teams because its ability Multiscale allows it to withstand hits from some of the most powerful Pokemon in the metagame, such as Porygon-Z, Mega Charizard Y, and Magnezone. With more than competent offensive stats, physically and specially, and a loaded arsenal of powerful STAB and coverage attacks, Dragonite is capable of punching through just about any offensive Pokemon, bulky and otherwise, such as Meloetta, Zygarde, and Magnezone. Extreme Speed also gives Dragonite an opportunity to play around certain matchups that other setup users and tanky attackers simply do not have, namely the ability to pick up KOs against weakened Pokemon, such as Kommo-o and Garchomp after using its Z-Move and Magnezone after Earthquake. However, despite having a viable means of setting up with Dragon Dance, Dragonite still ends up struggling against Pokemon with the raw bulk, type resistances, or setup to withstand its attacks, namely against Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Lele, and Mega Slowbro. Additionally, there are Pokemon that can play around Multiscale while still advancing their win condition, such as Will-O-Wisp Mega Charizard X and Mega Gardevoir and Fake Out + Ice Punch Mega Lopunny and Mega Medicham.

Moves
========

Outrage is Dragonite's main STAB attack and doubles as the base move for a powerful Devastating Drake, which brushes aside most foes it hits neutrally that lack absurd physical bulk or hindering status moves, such as Mega Charizard Y, Porygon-Z, and Meloetta. Earthquake is an essential coverage move for hitting the Steel-types that resist both of Dragonite's STAB attacks, like Magnezone, Heatran, and Aegislash. Extreme Speed is a useful move for picking off weakened targets after they've been softened up by Dragonite's other attacks. Some relevant examples that this move helps against include Kommo-o, Magnezone, Donphan, and Zeraora. Dragon Dance is Dragonite's setup move and also enables the use of Z-Dragon Dance, which restores the user's lowered stats to +0 before setting up, if ran with Dragonium Z. Matchups you'll find yourself needing Dragon Dance for include Normalium Z Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Mega Venusaur. Alternatively, a similar set with Fly over one of Dragonite's moves and Flyinium Z over Dragonium Z can be run, sacrificing matchups against Pokemon that Devastating Drake would win against, like opposing Dragonite, Zygarde, and Bulk Up Zeraora, in favor of winning matchups against Pokemon like slow Tapu Lele, Genesect, Primarina, and Durant.

Set Details
========

216 HP EVs make Dragonite survive a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios as well as a Devastating Drake from Garchomp with the extra 16 Defense. The 124 Speed EVs let Dragonite outspeed Mega Pinsir after a Dragon Dance, while 152 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature enable Dragonite to OHKO Z-Conversion-boosted Porygon-Z with Devastating Drake after boosting with Dragon Dance, KO Landorus-T with Outrage as reliably as possible after a Z-Dragon Dance, and 3HKO Mega Metagross as reliably as possible with two Earthquakes and an Extreme Speed. Multiscale is an essential ability that allows Dragonite to withstand an attack, at full health, from most Pokemon beyond Mold Breaker users or Pokemon with extremely powerful super effective STAB attacks. The set with Flyinium Z only has one slight difference from the Dragonium Z set in that it has 148 Speed versus Dragonium Z's 124, with 24 EVs being taken out of Attack, sacrificing slight reliability of 3HKOing Mega Metagross. The extra Speed is necessary in order to make Dragonite outspeed Kartana after a single Dragon Dance so it can go for the OHKO with Supersonic Skystrike on the next turn.

Usage Tips
========

Dragonite is best used against Pokemon that lack or don't use reliable recovery and some way to boost their Defense or lower the foe's Attack, such as Mega Charizard Y, Aegislash, Meloetta, and Magnezone. Even though Dragonite doesn't have the greatest defensive typing, Multiscale makes it capable of withstanding hits from even most super effective hits, such as Mega Charizard X's Outrage, Porygon-Z's Ice Beam, Kommo-o's Clangorous Soulblaze, and Crustle's Continental Crush. You need to pick your uses of Dragon Dance wisely; ideally, it's used in matchups against Pokemon that have higher base Speed than Dragonite and often run bulk, like Mew, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Mega Pinsir. In most matchups where the opposing Pokemon can't boost its Defense or lower Dragonite's Attack, you're best suited attacking right away, rather than setting up with Dragon Dance. These matchups include non-Z-Conversion Porygon-Z, Aegislash, Donphan, and Heatran. The Kommo-o matchup is a bit of an exception to the tips provided above, as Dragonite's Z-Moves OHKO Kommo-o even at +1 Defense or at least drop it low enough for Extreme Speed to pick up the KO. Against Mega Charizard X, Dragon Dance is usually the ideal play, as they will most often opt to use Will-O-Wisp to hinder Dragonite's Attack and break Multiscale to KO it on the next turn with Outrage. Using Dragon Dance will make Dragonite faster than them on the second turn, allowing it to either OHKO them with Devastating Drake if they try to Mega Evolve or 2HKO them with Devastating Drake followed by Extreme Speed if they don't. It becomes a bit prediction based once your opponent knows the tech, though; if you predict them to use a move other than Will-O-Wisp, you should Devastating Drake right away, as an Outrage from Mega Charizard X after a Dragon Dance or Flame Charge will likely KO Dragonite. Z-Dragon Dance is only really useful for getting past certain Taunt users, namely Mew and Krookodile, but it also helps for the Landorus-T matchup, as Z-Dragon Dance undoes Intimidate's Attack drop and boosts Dragonite to +1, in addition to undoing a possible Speed reduction from Rock Tomb. Against Donphan, Golem, and Sawk, you need to be wary of the potential presence of Counter in their moveset. The ideal play against these Pokemon is to use Extreme Speed to mitigate any potential damage taken from Counter, so that you can then pick up the KO with Dragonite's Z-Move on the next turn. Against Donphan and Golem, keep in mind that Extreme Speed has a higher priority than their Ice Shard and Sucker Punch.

Team Options
========

Steel-type Pokemon like Magnezone, Genesect, Ferrothorn, and Celesteela all help to cover Dragonite's weakness to common Fairy-types like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Togekiss, and Clefable while being aided by Dragonite's proficiency against the Fighting-, Ground-, and Fire-types that would threaten them, like Mega Charizard Y, Zygarde, Landorus-T, Heatran, and Blaziken. Physically defensive Pokemon like Mega Slowbro, Zygarde, Tapu Fini, and Porygon2 aid Dragonite through dealing with various Pokemon that have either the moves, ability, or raw stats to withstand its attacks, like Mega Charizard X, Mega Gyarados, Mega Metagross, Celesteela, and Mega Aggron. In turn, Dragonite helps these Pokemon out by covering their weaknesses to special attackers and stallbreakers like Mew, Magnezone, Kommo-o, Genesect, and Hoopa-U. Meloetta helps Dragonite by handling particular threats to it, like non-Crunch Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Mega Slowbro; just be wary that Meloetta needs Calm Mind to handle Gyarados and Slowbro and needs both Calm Mind and Laser focus to handle Magearna. In return, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Electrium Z Zeraora, and Volcarona.

[SET]
name: Lord of the FlyZ (Special Flyinium Z)
move 1: Hurricane
move 2: Fire Blast
move 3: Extreme Speed
move 4: Ice Beam
item: Flyinium Z
ability: Multiscale
nature: Modest
evs: 216 HP / 16 Def / 140 SpA / 136 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Hurricane is the main move, being boosted by Flyinium Z to gain perfect accuracy and a considerable boost in power for a single turn. Supersonic Skystrike's main utility is for covering Pokemon that resist or are immune to Dragonite's Dragon-type moves, namely slow Tapu Lele, Mega Altaria, and Primarina. Furthermore, since it's a special attack, Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk can no longer deflect their damage right back at Dragonite. Fire Blast is an essential move for damaging Steel-types. The main Pokemon hit with Fire Blast are non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Magnezone, Aegislash, Genesect, and Ferrothorn. Extreme Speed is an essential priority attack for picking up KOs against weakened Pokemon. The main Pokemon you'll want to have it for are Crustle, Sawk, Carracosta, and Kommo-o in case Dragonite's Z-Move doesn't OHKO them. Ice Beam is a coverage move that aids to win certain matchups more reliably, namely against Substitute users like Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Zygarde, though it can also help against opposing Dragonite that lack a Dragon-type Z-Move as well as Mega Altaria.

Set Details
========

The 216 HP EVs make Dragonite survive a Choice Specs-boosted Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios. 16 Defense EVs ensure Dragonite survives a potential Dragonium Z-boosted Outrage from Garchomp. 140 Special Attack EVs with a Modest nature let Dragonite reliably 3HKO Mega Metagross with the combination of two Fire Blasts and an Extreme Speed, in addition to 2HKOing non-specially defensive Kommo-o that have been boosted by Clangorous Soulblaze with Supersonic Skystrike followed by Extreme Speed. The 136 Speed EVs let Dragonite outspeed uninvested base 95 Speed Pokemon, namely Tapu Lele and Zygarde, as well as outspeeding specially defensive variants of Kommo-o that would not be 2HKOed by Supersonic Skystrike followed by Extreme Speed.

Usage Tips
========

Special Dragonite is more suited going in against Pokemon that can't or don't usually boost their defenses or heal off any damage, such as Mega Charizard Y, non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Landorus-T, and Donphan. This Dragonite set does not have to fear the potential damage deflection from Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk, so it can just use its Z-Move right away and pick them off with Extreme Speed. Unfortunately, since Dragonite doesn't possess a viable means of boosting its Special Attack, certain matchups are unfavorable, namely against Recover Porygon-Z, Amnesia Mew, and Iapapa Berry Necrozma, as well as losing the potential win against specially defensive Mega Charizard X.

Team Options
========

Meloetta is an asset to Dragonite, covering its weaknesses to Porygon-Z, Magearna, faster Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Mega Slowbro. In return, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Genesect, and Crustle. Mega Tyranitar aids Dragonite by taking on specially defensive Mega Charizard X, Dragonium Z Dragonite, Porygon-Z, Meloetta, and Choice Specs Greninja, while Dragonite backs up Tyranitar by taking care of non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Landorus-T, Mega Altaria, and Kommo-o. Physically defensive Zygarde covers Dragonite's weaknesses to Mega Charizard X, Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Ice Punch Mega Metagross, and Metal Sound Aegislash, while Dragonite handles Zygarde's weaknesses to Mega Altaria, Genesect, Kommo-o, Primarina, and Naganadel.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A specially offensive set with Dragonium Z + Draco Meteor can be ran over Flyinium Z + Hurricane, but without a sufficiently viable means of increasing the power of its Z-Move, in addition to the lacking metagame coverage that Dragon-type moves provide, it ends up being outclassed by Flyinium Z. The one upside to it is that Dragonite doesn't have to run Speed anymore, since the extra power from Devastating Drake lets Dragonite 2HKO Kommo-o even after Clangorous Soulblaze, which means you can move those EVs into Special Defense, letting Dragonite reliably withstand an Ice Beam from Choice Specs Greninja. Choice Band is an option that allows Dragonite to reliably beat Magearna with Earthquake, as long as Dragonite outspeeds it and has the bulk investment to withstand a Twinkle Tackle, in addition to giving Outrage nearly Devastating Drake-level power on each hit. It suffers from not having the ability to pick off Pokemon with Extreme Speed due to the Choice lock, though. Groundium Z with Earthquake can be run to bait Pokemon that would otherwise counter Dragonite, like Magearna, Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Mega Tyranitar, and Mega Mawile. Protect can be used on Z-Move sets to block Fake Out from Mega Lopunny, Zeraora, Mega Medicham, and Incineroar in order to maintain Multiscale, though you have to sacrifice an important move for it on physical sets. Fire Punch can be used on physical sets to safely beat Genesect, Kartana, Ferrothorn, and Durant.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-types**: Pokemon like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Altaria, and Tapu Fini all withstand attacks from Dragonite either naturally or with the help of moves like Reflect, Will-O-Wisp, and Cotton Guard and make quick work of Dragonite with their Fairy-type moves.

**Coverage Attacks**: Certain Pokemon can either safely break Multiscale and KO Dragonite or have the natural bulk or type advantages to withstand its attacks and threaten it with their super effective coverage attacks, namely Outrage Mega Gyarados, Ice Beam Greninja, Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Ice Beam Genesect, and Ice Punch Mega Lopunny.

**Stall**: Stall Pokemon often have sufficient bulk to withstand attacks from Dragonite and can either set up defensively to mitigate its damage or hinder Dragonite with some kind of stat-dropping move and heal off any damage Dragonite does all the while. These Pokemon include Mega Slowbro, Kee Berry Mew, Chansey, and Mega Sableye.

With Charizard-Megas, they should be Mega Charizard formes iirc, double check with tda or smth, but definitely not Charizard-Mega.
Also be careful when mentioning them, because esp with dnite, the form is actually important. it struggles a lot more with zardx, than zardy, the matchup is definitely not in dnites favour if zardx is willo and/or spdef depending on ur set. Even flame charge has a decent matchup vs dnite, if dnite ddances on zardx's ddance or fcharge, then zardx wins. this is old news for u but yeah.

thing to talk about potentially changing:
special flyinium -> special dragonium.
Also inclined to run flyinium as the main physical set as it tackles fairies better

overall good writing, have some nitpicks with certain mons used as examples. they could be more relevant and accurate.
For teammates id highly suggest having something that adequately handles mgyara as it is the most prominent dnite check/counter in terms of vr.

hopefully thats all i wanted to check, but as usual, tag me or message me when you've implemented changes so i can do a read-over.

i apologise pre-emptively for the unnecessary jokes.

  • Dragonite is a valuable asset to teams because its ability, Multiscale, allows it to withstand hits from some of the most powerful Pokemon in the metagame, such as Charizard-Mega (mentioned this in general comments), Magearna, and Porygon-Z, in addition to being able to fire back with powerful attacks of its own, both physically and specially. (i think being able to hit physically and specially should be its own dot point.)
  • With more than competent offensive stats and a loaded arsenal of powerful STAB and coverage attacks, Dragonite is capable of punching through just about any offensive Pokemon, such as Meloetta, Zygarde, and Magnezone. (this isn't wrong, but rather than offensive pokemon, i think saying 'different archetypes' or just 'bulky offensive pokemon' would be a better representation of what dragonite can really do. especially with the examples you've given, which are more in the 'bulky offense' category.)
  • Despite having a viable means of setting up with Dragon Dance, Dragonite still ends up struggling in certain scenarios against Pokemon with the raw bulk, type resistances, or setup to withstand Dragonite's attacks, namely against Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, and Slowbro-Mega.
  • Additionally, there are Pokemon that can play around Multiscale while still advancing their win condition, such as Will-o-Wisp Charizard-X and Gardevoir-Mega, and Fake Out + Ice Punch Lopunny-Mega and Medicham-Mega.

Moves

  • Outrage is your main STAB, and base move for a powerful Devastating Drake. Z-Outrage brushes aside most neutral hits Pokemon that lack absurd physical bulk or hindering status moves (willowisp is fine. its the only relevant/reliable status move), such as Charizard-Mega (mentioned this in general comments), Porygon-Z, Meloetta, and Lopunny-Mega.
  • Earthquake is an essential coverage move for hitting the Steel types that would otherwise resist both of your STABs, like Magnezone, Metagross-Mega, and Aegislash.
  • Extreme Speed is a useful move for picking off weakened opponents after they've been softened up by your other attacks. Some relevant examples that this move helps for matchups against include Charizard-Mega, Metagross-Mega, Magnezone, and Donphan (i think mention sturdy mons in general, and maybe how it can help to outprioritise other priority moves like say against like sucker punch)
  • Dragon Dance is Dragonite's setup move, boosting both the user's Attack and Speed by one stage per use. You can also use it with the Dragonium to make it into Z-Dragon Dance, which restores any dropped stats to +0 upon use. Matchups you'll find yourself needing Dragon Dance for include Charizard-Mega, Porygon-Z, and Meloetta. (similarly to my mawile analysis, you seem to be recycling the same 3 mons a lot. yes they are the cream of the crop, but find other mons for variety as well)
  • Alternatively, a similar set with Fly over Outrage and Flyinium over Dragonium can be ran, sacrificing matchups against Pokemon like Charizard-X, opposing Dragonite, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, and Kyurem in favor of winning matchups against Pokemon like slow Tapu Lele, Genesect, Primarina, and Durant. Flyinium also loses the ability to use Z-Dragon Dance, losing out to faster Taunt users like Mew.
Set Details
========

  • The 240 HP is for making Dragonite survive a Z-Outrage from Garchomp, as well as a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios. (damn this set loses to greninja O.o that sucks)
  • The 124 Speed is for making Dragonite outspeed Pinsir-Mega after a Dragon Dance.
  • The 144+ Attack is for OHKO-ing bulked Porygon-Z with Z-Outrage, OHKO-ing Landorus-Therian with Outrage after a Z-Dragon Dance, and 3HKO-ing Metagross-Mega as reliably as possible with two Earthquakes and an Extreme Speed.
  • Multiscale is an essential ability that allows Dragonite to withstand attacks (make it clear that it only halves the initial first attack) from most Pokemon, beyond Mold Breaker users or Pokemon with very powerful Ice STABs. (ma boi archeops can ohko with band tenkyu very much.)
  • The set with Flyinium only has one slight difference from the Dragonium set in that it has 148 Speed versus Dragonium's 124, the 24 EVs being taken out of Attack, since it still has a relatively reliable chance of 3HKO-ing Metagross-Mega without the extra Attack investment (I don't think this is relevant to mention). The extra Speed is necessary in order to make Dragonite outspeed Kartana after a single Dragon Dance so that it can then go for the OHKO with Z-Fly on the next turn.
Usage Tips
========

  • Dragonite is best suited against Pokemon that lack or don't use reliable HP recovery and some form of Defense boosting or Attack lowering, namely Charizard-Mega (mentioned this in general comments), Porygon-Z, Meloetta, and Zygarde. (cool mons. zardx has willo (attack lowering) and roost, poryz has defense boosting and recover, meloetta has zcelebrate and every zygarde literally has coil, not to mention rest) (basically you proclaim that dnite isnt good against mons with these things and then proceed to name mons that do these things. Maybe rephrase the description of these mons, or pick different ones that do match what youve said)
  • Even though Dragonite doesn't have the greatest defensive typing, Multiscale makes it capable of withstanding hits from even most super effective hits, namely Charizard-X's Outrage, Porygon-Z's Ice Beam, Kommo-o's Clangorous Soulblaze, and Crustle's Z-Rock Wrecker.
  • You need to pick your uses of Dragon Dance wisely. Ideally, it's best used in matchups against Pokemon that have higher base Speed than you and often run bulk, namely Charizard-Mega (mentioned this in general comments), Meloetta, Zygarde, and Pinsir-Mega.
  • In most matchups where your opponent can't boost their Defense or lower your Attack, you're best suited attacking right away, rather than setting up with Dragon Dance. These matchups include non-Z-Conversion Porygon-Z, non-Choice Specs Greninja, Aegislash, and Donphan.
  • The Kommo-o matchup is a bit of an exception to the tips provided above, as Dragonite's Z-moves either OHKO Kommo-o even at +1 Defense, or at least drop it low enough for Extreme Speed to pick up the KO.
  • Against Charizard-X, Dragon Dance is usually the ideal play, as they will most often opt to use Will-o-Wisp to hinder your Attack and break Multiscale for them to KO on the next turn with Outrage. Using Dragon Dance will make you faster than them on the second turn, making it so that you can either OHKO them with Z-Outrage if they try to Mega evolve, or 2HKO them with Z-Outrage followed by Extreme Speed if they don't Mega. It becomes a bit prediction based once they know the tech, though.
  • Z-Dragon Dance is only really useful for getting past certain Taunt users, namely Mew and Krookodile, but it also helps for the Landorus-Therian matchup, as Z-Dragon Dance undoes Landorus' Intimidate lowering your attack and boosts you to +1, in addition to undoing a possible Speed reduction from Rock Tomb. (very cool. have not seen this in action before. I imagine it still loses to kew though. and that krook and lando can still continue to bulk up)
  • Against Donphan, Sawk, Golem, and Crustle, you need to be wary of the potential presence of Counter in their moveset. The ideal play against these Pokemon is to use Extreme Speed to mitigate any potential damage taken from Counter, so that you can then pick up the KO with your Z-move on the next turn. Just be wary that Crustle can still set up with Shell Smash and OHKO you on the next turn.
Team Options

  • Z-Celebrate Meloetta helps Dragonite by ironing out the odds against Charizard-X, as well as handling various threats to Dragonite, like non-Crunch Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Slowbro-Mega. In turn, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Zygarde, Magnezone, and Aegislash. (i wouldnt say melo is the best charx answer...not to mention mgyara. crunch is 47% at 1630usage. id recommend changing this to something that better checks gyara (which is one of dnites most relevant counters) and zardx, but send me zardx calcs to convince me anyway. also if z celebrate doesnt pack calm mind, then i wouldnt say it beats slowbro either)
  • Genesect covers Dragonite's weaknesses to threats like Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Greninja, and Slowbro-Mega, while Dragonite covers Genesect by handling its weaknesses to Charizard-Mega, Magnezone, Aegislash, and Kommo-o.
  • Ferrothorn handles Dragonite's weaknesses to threats like Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, non-Hidden Power Fire Greninja, and Gardevoir-Mega, while Dragonite covers Ferrothorn's weaknesses to threats like Charizard-Mega, Z-move Mew, Aegislash, and Kommo-o.

Moves
========

  • Hurricane is the main move, being boosted by Flyinium to gain perfect accuracy and a considerable boost to power for a single turn. Similar to Z-Fly, Z-Hurricane's main utility is for covering Pokemon that would resist Dragonite's Dragon type moves, namely slow Tapu Lele, Altaria-Mega, and Primarina. That said, being a special attack now means that Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk can no longer deflect their damage right back at you.
  • Fire Blast is an essential Steel type hitter in lieu of not having the Attack investment necessary to viably run Earthquake. The main Pokemon you hit with Fire Blast are Metagross-Mega, Magnezone, Aegislash, Genesect, and Ferrothorn.
  • Extreme Speed, despite no longer being physically offensive, is still an essential priority attack for picking up KOs against weakened Pokemon. The main scenarios you'll want to have it for are Crustle, Sawk, Carracosta, and Kommo-o, in case your Z-move doesn't OHKO it.
  • Ice Beam is a coverage move that aids to make certain matchups more reliably won, namely those against Substitute users like Garchomp, Landorus-Therian, and Zygarde, though it can also help against opposing Dragonite that lack a Dragon type Z-move, as well as Altaria-Mega.
  • Zap Cannon, while it isn't necessarily accurate, helps for certain particular matchups against the bulky Water types of the metagame, like Gyarados-Mega and Manaphy, though it also helps against specially defensive Charizard-X and Tapu Lele. (no one runs this, except like im guessing electrium z. too unreliable)
  • Toxic is used to handle Pokemon that would otherwise stall you down, like non-Rest Slowbro-Mega, Iapapa Berry Necrozma, and Pyukumuku. (i reckon this is purely a cteam set. you could literally add this on any pokemon for these purposes. its not even listed in usage at all.)
  • Similarly to the physical, I think you should slash Flyinium Z, and actually have Dragonium Z as the main set. Draco Meteor not only has much more usage than Hurricane, but also more damage and relevancy, in particular hitting harder against Charizard X, Golem, Zygarde and id say also for stuff like Zeraora even.
Set Details
========

  • The 216 HP EVs allow Dragonite to withstand a Choice Specs or Dragonium boosted Draco Meteor from 252 SpA Latios. (neither of these are relevant at all.)
  • The 36 Def EVs work with Dragonite's HP to make it withstand a Z-Outrage from Garchomp, as well as give it as reliable of a chance of withstanding Max Attack Gyarados-Mega's Outrage as possible. this makes a little more sense but also doesnt sound very relevant..zdragon garchomp isnt the most popular set, and ur not beating gyara anyway.
  • The 132+ Special Attack makes Dragonite reliably 3HKO Metagross-Mega with the combination of two Fire Blasts and an Extreme Speed, in addition to 2HKO-ing non-specially defensive Kommo-o that have been boosted by Clangorous Soulblaze with Z-Hurricane followed by Extreme Speed.
  • The 124 Speed lets Dragonite outspeed 0 Speed base 95 Pokemon, namely Tapu Lele and Zygarde, as well as outspeeding specially defensive variants of Kommo-o that would otherwise not be 2HKO'd by Z-Hurricane and Extreme Speed.
Usage Tips
========

  • Like the physical sets, special Dragonite is more suited going in against Pokemon that can't or don't usually boost their special defenses or heal off any damage, namely Charizard-Mega, non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, and Donphan.
  • Unfortunately, since Dragonite doesn't possess a viable means of boosting its Special Attack, certain matchups are now lost, namely Recover Porygon-Z, Kee Berry Mew, and Iapapa Berry Necrozma.
  • Dragonite no longer has to fear the potential damage deflection from Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk, so it can now just Z-Hurricane right away and pick them off with Extreme Speed.
  • Against Zygarde, if you lack Ice Beam, use Hurricane on the first turn to make sure they don't activate Power Construct, then pick up the 2HKO with Z-Hurricane on the second turn.
  • mention matchup vs zard x
Team Options
========

  • Z-Celebrate Meloetta continues to be an asset to Dragonite, covering its weaknesses to Porygon-Z, Magearna, faster Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Slowbro-Mega. In turn, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Zygarde, Genesect, and Crustle.
  • Tyranitar-Mega aids Dragonite by covering its weaknesses to specially defensive Charizard-X, Dragonium Dragonite, Porygon-Z, Meloetta, and Choice Specs Greninja. Dragonite backs up Tyranitar by taking care of non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, Altaria-Mega, and Kommo-o.
  • Zygarde covers Dragonite's weaknesses to Charizard-Mega, Gyaraods-Mega, Magearna, Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, and Metal Sound Aegislash, while Dragonite handles Zygarde's weaknesses to Altaria-Mega, Genesect, Kommo-o, Primarina, and Naganadel. (maybe specify physically defensive zygarde, because i don't know of any other set that reliably takes on zardx and mdos. also i'm not supposed to check gp but gyaraods -> gyarados)

Other Options
=============

  • A specially offensive set with Z-Draco Meteor can be ran over Z-Hurricane, though, without a sufficiently viable means of increasing the power of its Z-move, in addition to the lacking metagame coverage that Dragon type moves provide, it ends up being outclassed by Z-Hurricane. The one upside to it is that you don't have to run Speed anymore, since the extra power from Z-Draco Meteor lets you 2HKO Kommo-o even at +1, which means you can move those EVs into Special Defense, which lets you reliably withstand an Ice Beam from Choice Specs Greninja.
  • Choice Band is an option that allows Dragonite to reliably beat Magearna with Earthquake, as long as Dragonite outspeeds it and is bulked to withstand a Z-Fleur Cannon, in addition to giving Outrage nearly Z-Outrage power on each hit. It suffers from not having the ability to pick off Pokemon with Extreme Speed, though.
  • Groundium with Earthquake can be ran to bait Pokemon that would otherwise counter Dragonite, like Magearna, Metagross-Mega, Tyranitar-Mega, and Mawile-Mega.
  • Protect can be ran on Z-move sets to block Fake Out from Lopunny-Mega, Zeraora, Medicham-Mega, and Incineroar, in order to maintain Multiscale, though you have to sacrifice an important move for it on physical sets. (id rather run inner focus xd jks )
  • if ur mentioning zap cannon may as well mention electrium z right.
Checks and Counters

!!!!!M-Gyara!!!!!

if you feel its necessary, also mzardx

**Fairy types**: Pokemon like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Gardevoir-Mega, Altaria-Mega, and Tapu Fini all withstand attacks from Dragonite either naturally or with the help of moves like Reflect, Will-o-Wisp, and Cotton Guard, and make quick work of Dragonite with their Fairy type moves. may be worth mentioning that dnite has ways around like every single one of these mons bar garde

**Bulky Ice-type coverage users** (i think its more accurate to have this, as all of your pokemon aren't bulky, and all the ones u named use ice attacks): Pokemon that have either the natural bulk or type advantages to withstand attacks from Dragonite threaten it with their super effective coverage attacks, namely Outrage Gyarados-Mega, Ice Beam Greninja, Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Ice Beam Genesect, and Ice Punch Lopunny-Mega.

**Stall**: Stally Pokemon often have sufficient bulk to withstand attacks from Dragonite, as well as either set up defensively to mitigate its damage or hinder Dragonite with some kind of stat-dropping move, and heal off any damage Dragonite does all the while. These Pokemon include Slowbro-Mega, Kee Berry Mew, Venusaur-Mega, Chansey, and Sableye-Mega.

thing to talk about potentially changing:
special flyinium -> special dragonium.
Special Dragonium is kinda bad. You don't get to boost like you can with DD into Z-Outrage, nor do you get the benefit of Z-DD, and you don't even have the Fairy coverage like Z-Hurricane does. You at least get to drop the Speed investment since you don't need it for anything now, and make the Greninja matchup better, but that's actually about it. You suffer a net loss of matchups with Z-Draco Meteor. It's effectively better as a surprise cteam move on Physical Dragonite for Sawk/Donphan/Crustle/etc, at the expense of one of your moves (probably Earthquake).
Also inclined to run flyinium as the main physical set as it tackles fairies better
Flyinium and Dragonium are both the main physical set, hence why neither are in OO, but you probably mean the displayed set-
I went with Dragonium over Flyinium since Dragonium has the top ranked metagame coverage, granting it wins against rival Dragonite (or at least a chance), 50/50-ing Charizard-X at worst, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, and Kee Berry Mew
As opposed to Flyinium's coverage against slow Tapu Lele, Genesect (you have to know if it's Scarf or Bulky Specs), Primarina, some Tapu Fini (they can either bulk a +1 or outspeed and Taunt), reliably beating Venusaur, and Kartana.
Dragonium has the higher ranked coverage, and reliably beats all of them besides WoW Zard-X and faster Dragonium Dnites.
For teammates id highly suggest having something that adequately handles mgyara as it is the most prominent dnite check/counter in terms of vr.
3 out of all 6 team options for both sets are Gyarados answers- 5 out of 6 if you discount Crunch.
(i think mention sturdy mons in general, and maybe how it can help to outprioritise other priority moves like say against like sucker punch)
Sturdy qualifies under the "weakened pokemon that you've softened up" bit that I already said. Just because they have an ability that makes it guaranteed to be like that doesn't make much of a difference from just hitting a mon for 97%. Outprioritizing Ice Shard and Sucker Punch are more of a usage tip than a move detail, but sure.
(very cool. have not seen this in action before. I imagine it still loses to kew though. and that krook and lando can still continue to bulk up)
I actually had a very long and complicated thing detailing this but martha said it was too long- Basically, if Landorus-Therian uses Bulk Up, then Dragonite wins by using Dragon Dance again, as they just 2HKO with Outrage if they Bulk Up again and are now too fast to be outsped after Rock Tomb, or you get a majority roll to OHKO at +2 vs +1 if they use Rock Tomb (and have Adamant for having a chance at 2HKO-ing).
Krookodile gets 3HKO'd after Z-DD, while they fail to KO you before then, unless they pack something stronger than Rock Tomb.
Kew wins if they have an attacking move or defense boosting move over Amnesia, otherwise, Dragonite just sets up Dragon Dance every time Taunt ends and eventually gets a 2HKO against Mew. (+4 144+ Atk burned Dragonite Outrage vs. +1 252 HP / 0 Def Mew: 204-240 (50.4 - 59.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO)
Melo OHKOs max HP zardx pretty handily after Z-Celebrate and 50/50s spdef zardx at worst with Psyshock/CM/LF into Z-Hyper Beam vs Z-Celebrate then 2HKO.
0 Atk Tough Claws Charizard-Mega-X Outrage vs. 252 HP / 180 Def Meloetta: 211-250 (52.2 - 61.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Tough Claws Charizard-Mega-X Outrage vs. +1 252 HP / 180 Def Meloetta: 142-168 (35.1 - 41.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

You always run CM. Crunch is a meanie :< (though not at 47% anymore) https://www.smogon.com/stats/2019-02/moveset/gen71v1-1630.txt

Other than these, implemented.

Dragon Dance is Dragonite's setup move, boosting both the user's Attack and Speed by one stage per use, and allows for the use of Z-Dragon Dance, which restores the user's lowered stats to +0 before setting up, if ran with Dragonium. You can also use it with the Dragonium to make it into Z-Dragon Dance, (this is a repeat of the previous sentence. rephrase this) which restores any dropped stats to +0 upon use. Matchups you'll find yourself needing Dragon Dance for include Charizard-Mega, Normalium Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Venusaur-Mega.
The extra Speed is necessary in order to make Dragonite outspeed Kartana after a single Dragon Dance so that it can then go for the OHKO with Z-Fly on the next turn.
not sure if this is entirely relevant as:
252+ Atk Dragonite Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Kartana: 255-300 (98 - 115.3%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
and
+1 252 Atk Choice Band Kartana Smart Strike (+1 accounting for a 2HKO after multiscale) vs. 240 HP / 4 Def Dragonite: 343-405 (89.5 - 105.7%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO.

this may not be much to go off but xsc's been sticking with special dragonium z for a while now and there's probably a good reason for it. leaving that to tda's discretion though lol

otherwise, looking good. after implementation:

1. Good catch, didn't notice that
2. Kartana can very feasibly run HP investment, even if it isn't common, which is what you would need DD for.
3. xsc is a not a credible source for defining what is and isn't good. A lot of people obsess over Z-Draco Meteor, but that doesn't make it any better than it really is.

[OVERVIEW]

  • Dragonite is a valuable asset to teams because its ability, Multiscale, allows it to withstand hits from some of the most powerful Pokemon in the metagame, such as Magearna and Porygon-Z. (If you aren't beating Magearna, no point in mentioning it; you could instead mention Garchomp)
  • With more than competent offensive stats, physical and special, and a loaded arsenal of powerful STAB and coverage attacks, Dragonite is capable of punching through just about any offensive Pokemon, bulked and otherwise, such as Meloetta, Zygarde, and Magnezone.
(I would remove "certain scenarios; makes it sound like the mentioned Pokemon are not full counters to Dragonite, while they are)
  • Additionally, there are Pokemon that can play around Multiscale while still advancing their win condition, such as Will-o-Wisp Charizard-X and Gardevoir-Mega, and Fake Out + Ice Punch Lopunny-Mega and Medicham-Mega.
(Mention a line about access to ExtremeSpeed; this is singularly the best part about Dragonite, its ability to finish off Pokemon which survives its attack like Primarina or Crustle, which is its advantage over other Dragon Dance users)

Moves
========

  • Outrage is your main STAB, and base move for a powerful Devastating Drake. Z-Outrage brushes aside most things it hits neutrally that lack absurd physical bulk or hindering status moves, such as Charizard-Y, Porygon-Z, and Meloetta.
  • Earthquake is an essential coverage move for hitting the Steel types that would otherwise resist both of your STABs, like Magnezone, Metagross-Mega, and Aegislash. (Metagross-Mega 2HKOs with Ice Punch, and non-Ice Punch ones, namely anti-MegaDos MGross tanks 2 EQ into ESpeed and finishes u with Meteor Mash
    ---> 144+ Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 28+ Def Metagross-Mega: 144-170 (39.5 - 46.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO --->144+ Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 252 HP / 28+ Def Metagross-Mega: 28-34 (7.6 - 9.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
    , mention Heatran, perhaps?)
  • (Fire Punch as an alternative to Earthquake, foregoes the surity in Aegislash matchup, and Heatran matchup competely for a chance to kill Durant, Kartana, and other such things)
  • Extreme Speed is a useful move for picking off weakened opponents after they've been softened up by your other attacks. Some relevant examples that this move helps for matchups against include Charizard-Mega, Metagross-Mega, Magnezone, and Donphan
  • Dragon Dance is Dragonite's setup move, boosting both the user's Attack and Speed by one stage per use, and allows for the use of Z-Dragon Dance, which restores the user's lowered stats to +0 before setting up, if ran with Dragonium. Matchups you'll find yourself needing Dragon Dance for include Charizard-Mega, Normalium Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Venusaur-Mega.
Set Details
========

  • The 240 HP is for making Dragonite survive a Z-Outrage from Garchomp, as well as a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios.
  • Multiscale is an essential ability that allows Dragonite to withstand an attack, at full health, from most Pokemon beyond Mold Breaker users or Pokemon with extremely powerful super effective STABs.
  • The set with Flyinium only has one slight difference from the Dragonium set in that it has 148 Speed versus Dragonium's 124, the 24 EVs being taken out of Attack, sacrificing slight reliability of 3HKO-ing Metagross-Mega. The extra Speed is necessary in order to make Dragonite outspeed Kartana after a single Dragon Dance so that it can then go for the OHKO with Z-Fly on the next turn.
Usage Tips
========

  • Dragonite is best suited against Pokemon that lack or don't use reliable HP recovery and some form of Defense boosting or Attack lowering, namely Charizard-Y, Aegislash, Meloetta, and Magnezone.
  • Even though Dragonite doesn't have the greatest defensive typing, Multiscale makes it capable of withstanding hits from even most super effective hits, namely Charizard-X's Outrage, Porygon-Z's Ice Beam, Kommo-o's Clangorous Soulblaze, and Crustle's Z-Rock Wrecker. (Crustle is not the best example here, since it can also potentially use Counter, so I'd move Crustle to the GolPhan point)
  • You need to pick your uses of Dragon Dance wisely. Ideally, it's best used in matchups against Pokemon that have higher base Speed than you and often run bulk, namely Charizard-X, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Pinsir-Mega.
(I think Landorus-T is not a good example here, since bulky Landorus-T can take Outrage at +1, 3HKO Dragonite thru Multiscale with Rock Tomb, and is fast enough to outspeed Dragonite
    [*]100+ Atk Landorus-Therian Rock Tomb vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 74-88 (19.3 - 22.9%) -- possible 5HKO
    [*]100+ Atk Landorus-Therian Rock Tomb vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Dragonite: 148-176 (38.6 - 45.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
    [*]+1 144+ Atk Dragonite Outrage vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Landorus-Therian: 334-394 (88.1 - 103.9%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
    )
  • Against Donphan, Golem, and Sawk, you need to be wary of the potential presence of Counter in their moveset. The ideal play against these Pokemon is to use Extreme Speed to mitigate any potential damage taken from Counter, so that you can then pick up the KO with your Z-move on the next turn. Against Donphan and Golem, keep in mind that Extreme Speed has a higher priority than their Ice Shard and Sucker Punch.
Team Options
========

(Z-Celebrate Meloetta is not a Magearna counter, while Calm Mind Laser Focus Meloetta is)
  • Choice Scarf Genesect covers Dragonite's weaknesses to threats like Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Greninja, and Slowbro-Mega, while Dragonite covers Genesect by handling its weaknesses to Charizard-Mega, Magnezone, Aegislash, and Kommo-o. (Unless specially defensive Genesect, I can't see how Genesect beats Greninja otherwise)
  • Ferrothorn handles Dragonite's weaknesses to threats like Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, non-Hidden Power Fire Greninja, and Gardevoir-Mega, while Dragonite covers Ferrothorn's weaknesses to threats like Charizard-Mega, Z-move Mew, Aegislash, and Kommo-o. (Again, Magearna? Not the IDef Pain Split set, certainly)
(Also, I think if you could generalise teammates with Dragonite, it would be better; writing specific ones make it look like it's really hard to teambuild with, which is clearly not the case. Something like "Pokemon like Magearna, which beats common Dragonite counters like Mold Breaker Pokemon, and Greninja")

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Extreme Speed, despite no longer being physically offensive,is still an essential priority attack for picking up KOs against weakened Pokemon.
(You aren't supposed to write one set with reference to another set at all; you have to assume that readers are going to read only about the current set. So, please remove all references to past set.)

Set Details
========

    • The 216 HP EVs allow Dragonite to withstand a Choice Specs or Dragonium boosted Draco Meteor from Timid Naganadel.
    • The 36 Def EVs work with Dragonite's HP to make it withstand a Z-Outrage from Garchomp.
(Dragonite mostly beats Kommo-o,
Usage Tips
========

    • Like the physical sets, special Dragonite is more suited going in against Pokemon that can't or don't usually boost their defenses or heal off any damage, namely Charizard-Mega, non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, and Donphan.
    • Unfortunately, since Dragonite doesn't possess a viable means of boosting its Special Attack, certain matchups are now lost namelysome matchups become unfavorable like Recover Porygon-Z, Kee Berry Mew, and Iapapa Berry Necrozma, as well as losing the potential win against Specially Defensive Charizard-X.
(You haven't suggested other coverage moves option, so I think this point is awkward here)
Team Options
========

Dragonite backs up Tyranitar by taking care of non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, Altaria-Mega, and Kommo-oFighting-type Pokemon.
    • Physically Defensive Zygarde covers Dragonite's weaknesses to Charizard-Mega, Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, and Metal Sound Aegislash, while Dragonite handles Zygarde's weaknesses to Altaria-Mega, Genesect, Kommo-o, Primarina, and Naganadel.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

(If you could, mention that it also disallows the freedom to pick moves according to the scenario, being locked into the same move. This part is important IMO, like you wanna pick out potential Counter and/or Metal Burst users, you start off by using a not very effective move, which is not possible with its Choice Band set)
    • Groundium with Earthquake can be ran to bait Pokemon that would otherwise counter Dragonite, like Magearna, no bulk invested Metagross-Mega, Tyranitar-Mega, and Mawile-Mega.
    • Protect can be ran on Z-move sets to block Fake Out from Lopunny-Mega, Zeraora, Medicham-Mega, and Incineroar, in order to maintain Multiscale, though you have to sacrifice an important move for it on physical sets.
(Isn't Choice Specs worth a mention? It has relatively powerful coverage options and decent STAB moves, and fewer Pokemon use Mirror Coat as compared to Counter)
Checks and Counters
===================

**Coverage attacks**: These include Pokemon that can either safely break Multiscale and KO or have the natural bulk or type advantages to withstand attacks from Dragonite and threaten it with their super effective coverage attacks, namely Outrage Gyarados-Mega, Ice Beam Greninja, Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Ice Beam Genesect, and Ice Punch Lopunny-Mega.

**Stall**: Stally Pokemon often have sufficient bulk to withstand attacks from Dragonite, as well as either set up defensively to mitigate its damage or hinder Dragonite with some kind of stat-dropping move, and heal off any damage Dragonite does all the while. These Pokemon include Slowbro-Mega, Kee Berry Mew, Venusaur-Mega, Chansey, and Sableye-Mega.

martha I blame you for making me cut down on the length of the usage tip for having to talk about lando-t with each QC:psyangry:

Basically, Z-Dragon Dance wins here, since Dragonite gets any potential speed drop from Rock Tomb removed, thanks to its z-effect, and thus Dragonite will always be faster than Landorus-Therian, as long as it keeps using Dragon Dance.

The only threat from Landorus-Therian is the possibility of tanking a +1 Outrage, while also having Z-Fly, while also having enough Atk to reliably 2hko Dragonite with Rock Tomb + Z-Fly, all of which combine to make a VERY particular Landorus set. If such a set becomes relevant, then so be it.

+1 100+ Atk Landorus-Therian Rock Tomb vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 111-131 (28.9 - 34.2%) -- 2.7% chance to 3HKO

+2 144+ Atk Dragonite Outrage vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Landorus-Therian: 447-526 (117.9 - 138.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Going for the 3HKO is a loss

(Z-Celebrate Meloetta is not a Magearna counter, while Calm Mind Laser Focus Meloetta is)
Z-Celebrate and Laser Focus are not mutually exclusive, but ok
(Again, Magearna? Not the IDef Pain Split set, certainly)
Substitute/Confide Ferro > Magearna, both of which are very viable moves (sub moreso than confide, imo)

I would love to generalize for Dragonite, but afaik there really aren't any general types or groups of mons that all reliably help beat the most pertinent threats to Dragonite, it's always been more of an individual, case-by-case matter whenever it comes to building with this mon

[OVERVIEW]

  • Dragonite is a valuable asset to teams because its ability, Multiscale, allows it to withstand hits from some of the most powerful Pokemon in the metagame, such as Porygon-Z, Mega Charizard-Y, and Magnezone.
  • With more than competent offensive stats, physical and special, and a loaded arsenal of powerful STAB and coverage attacks, Dragonite is capable of punching through just about any offensive Pokemon, bulked and otherwise, such as Meloetta, Zygarde, and Magnezone.
  • Dragonite also has the move Extreme Speed, which gives it an opportunity to play around certain matchups that other setup users and tanky attackers simply do not have, namely the ability to pick up KOs against weakened Pokemon, such as Kommo-o and Garchomp after your Z-move and Magnezone after Earthquake.
  • Despite having a viable means of setting up with Dragon Dance, Dragonite still ends up struggling against Pokemon with the raw bulk, type resistances, or setup to withstand Dragonite's attacks, namely against Mega Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, and Slowbro-Mega.
  • Additionally, there are Pokemon that can play around Multiscale while still advancing their win condition, such as Will-o-Wisp Mega Charizard-X and Mega Gardevoir-Mega, and Fake Out + Ice Punch Mega Lopunny-Mega and Mega Medicham-Mega. more gp but the mega goes first in analysis. Moves
========

  • Outrage is your main STAB, and base move for a powerful Devastating Drake. Z-Outrage brushes aside most things it hits neutrally that lack absurd physical bulk or hindering status moves, such as Charizard-Y, Porygon-Z, and Meloetta.
  • Earthquake is an essential coverage move for hitting the Steel types that would otherwise resist both of your STABs, like Magnezone, Heatran, and Aegislash.
  • Extreme Speed is a useful move for picking off weakened opponents after they've been softened up by your other attacks. Some relevant examples that this move helps for matchups against include non-Will-o-Wisp Charizard-Mega-X, non-Impish Metagross-Mega, Magnezone, and Donphan
  • Dragon Dance is Dragonite's setup move, boosting both the user's Attack and Speed by one stage per use, and allows for the use of Z-Dragon Dance, which restores the user's lowered stats to +0 before setting up, if ran with Dragonium. Matchups you'll find yourself needing Dragon Dance for include Charizard-Mega-X, Normalium Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Venusaur-Mega.
  • Alternatively, a similar set with Fly over Outrage or Dragon Dance and Flyinium over Dragonium can be ran, sacrificing matchups against Pokemon like Mega Charizard-X, opposing Dragonite, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, and Kyurem in favor of winning matchups against Pokemon like slow Tapu Lele, Genesect, Primarina, and Durant.
Set Details
========

  • The 240 HP is for making Dragonite survive a Z-Outrage from Garchomp, as well as a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios.
  • The 124 Speed is for making Dragonite outspeed Pinsir-Mega after a Dragon Dance. I don't think you need speed to win this matchup, the sets nowadays run sub eq giga setup to beat magearna. You can easily just ddance twice and tank any attacks they send your way
  • The 144+ Attack is for OHKO-ing bulked boosted Porygon-Z with Z-Outrage OHKO-ing offensive Landorus-Therian with Outrage after a Z-Dragon Dance, and 3HKO-ing Metagross-Mega as reliably as possible with two Earthquakes and an Extreme Speed.
  • also, if this is all this is for, then you can slightly optimize it by running EVs: 216 HP / 168 Atk / 16 Def / 108 Spe, which lets you beats all the mons you bulked for with 24 extra evs for attack to help with some rolls against bulkier lando-ts.
Not very necessary. Even if we assume the optimal HP stat of 48 Evs on kart to live 2 sucker punches from mawile and your original ev spread, z fly into extremespeed still knocks out kart. If they're not banded, then you can afford to ddance twice. 144+ Atk Dragonite Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 48 HP / 0 Def Kartana: 237-279 (87.4 - 102.9%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO 144+ Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 48 HP / 0 Def Kartana: 36-43 (13.2 - 15.8%) -- possible 7HKO
Usage Tips
========

  • Dragonite is best suited against Pokemon that lack or don't use reliable HP recovery and some form of Defense boosting or Attack lowering, namely Charizard-Y, Aegislash, Meloetta, and Magnezone.
  • Even though Dragonite doesn't have the greatest defensive typing, Multiscale makes it capable of withstanding hits from even most super effective hits, namely unboosted Mega Charizard-X's Outrage, Porygon-Z's Ice Beam, Kommo-o's Clangorous Soulblaze, and Crustle's Z-Rock Wrecker.
  • You need to pick your uses of Dragon Dance wisely. Ideally, it's best used in matchups against Pokemon that have higher base Speed than you and often run bulk, namely Charizard-X, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Pinsir-Mega, and for 50/50ing Will-o-Wisp Mega Charizard X.
  • Against Mega Charizard-X, Dragon Dance is usually the ideal play, as they will most often opt to use Will-o-Wisp to hinder your Attack and break Multiscale for them to KO on the next turn with Outrage. Using Dragon Dance will make you faster than them on the second turn, making it so that you can either OHKO them with Z-Outrage if they try to Mega evolve, or 2HKO them with Z-Outrage followed by Extreme Speed if they don't Mega. It becomes a bit prediction based once they know the tech, though; understand that Dragonite needs to win a 50/50 to beat Mega Charizard X. Mention how physically defensive Mega Charizard X can live a burned +1 Devastating Drake into Espeed. Mention how you do not need to dragon dance against non-Will o Wisp variants, and can simply click your z move
  • Z-Dragon Dance is only really useful for getting past certain Taunt users, namely Mew and Krookodile Krookodile can't threaten you with its moveset, rock tomb does too little, but it also helps for the offensive Landorus-Therian matchup, as Z-Dragon Dance undoes Landorus' Intimidate lowering your attack and boosts you to +1, in addition to undoing a possible Speed reduction from Rock Tomb.
========

  • Z-Celebrate Meloetta helps Dragonite by ironing out the odds against non-specially defensive Mega Charizard-X, as well as handling various threats to Dragonite, like non-Crunch Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Slowbro-Mega, just be wary that you need Laser Focus and Calm Mind in order to reliably handle Magearna, as well as Calm Mind to handle Mega Gyarados and Slowbro. In turn, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Zygarde, Magnezone, and Aegislash.
  • Choice Scarf Genesect covers Dragonite's weaknesses to threats like Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Greninja, and Slowbro-Mega, while Dragonite covers Genesect by handling its weaknesses to non-Will-o-Wisp Charizard-Mega, Mega Charizard Y, Magnezone, Aegislash, and Kommo-o.
  • Ferrothorn handles Dragonite's weaknesses to threats like Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Tapu Lele, non-Hidden Power Fire Greninja, and Gardevoir-Mega, while Dragonite covers Ferrothorn's weaknesses to threats like non-Will-o-Wisp Charizard-Mega X, Mega Charizard Y, Z-move Mew, Aegislash, and Kommo-o.
  • Mention a bit more of specific archetypes that work well with Dragonite, like bulky steels, bulky special attackers, stuff like that, so the reader has more of a general idea of what works well, alongside specific examples

Moves
========

  • Hurricane is the main move, being boosted by Flyinium to gain perfect accuracy and a considerable boost to power for a single turn. Z-Hurricane's main utility is for covering Pokemon that would resist Dragonite's Dragon type moves, namely slow Tapu Lele, Altaria-Mega, and Primarina. That said, being a special attack now means that Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk can no longer deflect their damage right back at you.
  • Fire Blast is an essential move for damaging Steel types. The main Pokemon you hit with Fire Blast are non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Magnezone, Aegislash, Genesect, and Ferrothorn.
  • Extreme Speed is an essential priority attack for picking up KOs against weakened Pokemon.
Set Details
========

  • The 240 HP is for making Dragonite survive a Z-Outrage from Garchomp, as well as a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios.
  • The 136 Speed lets Dragonite outspeed 0 Speed base 95 Pokemon, namely Tapu Lele and Zygarde, as well as outspeeding specially defensive variants of Kommo-o that would otherwise not be 2HKO'd by Z-Hurricane and Extreme Speed.
  • Again, we could optimize the evs to EVs: 216 HP / 16 Def / 140 SpA / 136 Spe to get a slightly larger special attack
Usage Tips
========

  • Special Dragonite is more suited going in against Pokemon that can't or don't usually boost their defenses or heal off any damage, namely non-specially defensive Charizard-Mega, non-Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, and Donphan.
  • Unfortunately, since Dragonite doesn't possess a viable means of boosting its Special Attack, certain matchups are unfavorable, namely Recover Porygon-Z, Kee Berry Mew, and Iapapa Berry Necrozma, as well as losing the potential win 50/50 against Specially Defensive Charizard-X.
  • Dragonite no longer has to fear the potential damage deflection from Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk, so it can now just Z-Hurricane right away and pick them off with Extreme Speed.
Team Options
========

  • Physically Defensive Zygarde covers Dragonite's weaknesses to Charizard-Mega, Gyarados-Mega, Magearna, Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, and Metal Sound Aegislash, while Dragonite handles Zygarde's weaknesses to Altaria-Mega, Genesect, Kommo-o, Primarina, and Naganadel.
  • Same thing with the other Team Options, try to list certain archetypes that work well with dragonite, or fit these mons inside archetypal roles so as to not limit the teambuilding potential for Dragonite
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

It suffers from not having the ability to pick off Pokemon with Extreme Speed, due to Choice Band locking you into the first move you select, though.
  • Groundium with Earthquake can be ran to bait Pokemon that would otherwise counter Dragonite, like Magearna, Ice Punch Metagross-Mega, Tyranitar-Mega, and Mawile-Mega.
  • Protect can be ran on Z-move sets to block Fake Out from Lopunny-Mega, Zeraora, Medicham-Mega, and Incineroar, in order to maintain Multiscale, though you have to sacrifice an important move for it on physical sets.
  • Fire Punch is a move that can be used on Z-Outrage sets to safely beat Genesect, Kartana, Ferrothorn, and Durant
Checks and Counters
===================

Overall, really good analysis. You may want to diversify the examples given in each set of Pokemon you beat with Dragonite, since it is an S Rank and can body a ton of the metagame. I would also tone down a bit with how much you mention Mega Charizard X as examples for moves, it gives the impression that Dragonite is a reliable Mcharx answer at a passing glance. Besides that, and after we hash out some of the ev spreads, 2/3

That said, using my own logic with the kartana matchup, that also means that users who don't have wow have no reason not to boost up and ohko you, while you're using dd expecting a wow.
    • Also nobody runs more physical bulk on zardx beyond max hp
    • Perhaps it would just be better to remove this usage tip completely? Especially considering that the DD tip kinda already covers it.
  • 8: Krookodile vs dnite

One of the most important points of writing an analysis is trying to not oversell what a Pokemon can and cannot do in the metagame, so a reader gets a sense of what the mons they are using can do for certain, and what they will have to predict against, and therefore understand the matchup more clearly. As it stands rn, you've been using Mega Charizard X as reasoning to run certain moves, but you shouldn't make a set just to have a 50/50 with a Pokemon.

Also, even past Will o Wisp, 12% of char x run substitute as well, which I didn't look into the first time, and, combined with ddance or flame charge, would beat Dnite (assuming you wouldn't run will o and sub together cause that doesn't seem good at all.) Its like saying Fire Punch Hoopa beats Genesect because they run Bug buzz only half the time. That being said, you should definitely keep this point, so the reader knows how to play the 50/50 (Ddance if you think they'll will o, attack if you think they'll do anything else), but it would be better to remove Mega Charizard X as examples of mons you reliably beat, across the first set.

    • albeit Spdef DD makes it a 50/50, but ew.
Ye, thats why i said 'non-specially defensive Mega Charizard X'. Its so the reader can understand that spdef char x will still give it trouble. Spdef char x vs Meloetta is inconsistent in general, depends a lot on how bulky they want to be and how offensive char x wants to be.

Considerations:
  • 1: Merging Genesect and Ferrothorn into a "Steel type" teammates section.
    • Both mons have relatively similar coverage and weaknesses in relation to assisting Dragonite
    • Another team options bullet may need to be added if we do this

You do you with that. Generally, archetypes are preferred in Team Options, but if theres a particularly excellent partner for dnite, you can mention it separately. So if either one of these are quintessential partners iyo, you can talk about it by itself, if not i would combine

So, overall, yeah, sorry that I wasn't a bit more clear on why Mega Charizard X shouldn't be included as a mon dnite reliably beats, it should definitely be removed as examples for why Dragonite runs certain moves. You should definitely keep the section that mentions how to play around it, although you'll also need to include working around Substitute, and make sure the reader knows that its not reliable, and will require 50/50s to win against most sets. And don't forget to change the evs to the one with 124 spe evs.

[OVERVIEW]

Dragonite is a valuable asset to teams because its ability, Multiscale, maybe say what it does briefly allows it to withstand hits from some of the most powerful Pokemon in the metagame, such as Porygon-Z, Mega Charizard-Y, and Magnezone. With more than competent offensive stats, physical and special, and a loaded arsenal of powerful STAB and coverage attacks, Dragonite is capable of punching through just about any offensive Pokemon, bulked and otherwise, such as Meloetta, Zygarde, and Magnezone. Dragonite also has the move Extreme Speed, which gives it an opportunity to play around certain matchups that other setup users and tanky attackers simply do not have, namely the ability to pick up KOs against weakened Pokemon, such as Kommo-o and Garchomp after your Z-move and Magnezone after Earthquake. Despite having a viable means of setting up with Dragon Dance, Dragonite still ends up struggling against Pokemon with the raw bulk, type resistances, or setup to withstand Dragonite's attacks, namely against Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Lele, and Mega Slowbro. Additionally, there are Pokemon that can play around Multiscale while still advancing their win condition, such as Will-o-Wisp Mega Charizard-X and Mega Gardevoir, and Fake Out + Ice Punch Mega Lopunny and Mega Medicham.

Moves
========

Outrage is your main STAB, and base move for a powerful Devastating Drake. Z-Outrage brushes aside most things it hits neutrally that lack absurd physical bulk or hindering status moves, such as Mega Charizard-Y, Porygon-Z, and Meloetta. Earthquake is an essential coverage move for hitting the Steel types that would otherwise resist both of your STABs, like Magnezone, Heatran, and Aegislash. Extreme Speed is a useful move for picking off weakened opponents after they've been softened up by your other attacks. Some relevant examples that this move helps for matchups against include Kommo-o, non-Impish and ice punch Mega Metagross, Magnezone, Donphan, and Zeraora. Dragon Dance is Dragonite's setup move, boosting both the user's Attack and Speed by one stage per use, and allows for the use of Z-Dragon Dance, which restores the user's lowered stats to +0 before setting up, if ran with Dragonium. say where this might be useful Matchups you'll find yourself needing Dragon Dance for include Normalium Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Mega Venusaur. Alternatively, a similar set with Fly over one of your moves and Flyinium over Dragonium can be ran, sacrificing matchups against Pokemon that Z-Outrage would win against, like opposing Dragonite, Zygarde, and Kyurem Zeraora, use a more "noob friendly mon" in favor of winning matchups against Pokemon like slow Tapu Lele, Genesect, Primarina, and Durant.

The 240 HP but the set has 216 hp? is for making Dragonite survive a Z-Outrage from Garchomp, as well as a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios. The 124 Speed is for making Dragonite outspeed Mega Pinsir after a Dragon Dance. The 144+ Attack is for OHKO-ing Z-Conversion boosted Porygon-Z with Z-Outrage after boosting yourself with Dragon Dance, OHKO-ing non bulky Landorus-Therian with Outrage after a Z-Dragon Dance, say that you are also avoiding the speed reduction from tomb and attack reduction from intim here and 3HKO-ing non ice punch Metagross-Mega as reliably as possible with two Earthquakes and an Extreme Speed. Multiscale is an essential ability that allows Dragonite to withstand an attack, at full health, from most Pokemon beyond Mold Breaker users or Pokemon with extremely powerful super effective STABs. The set with Flyinium only has one slight difference from the Dragonium set in that it has 148 Speed versus Dragonium's 124, the 24 EVs being taken out of Attack, sacrificing slight reliability of 3HKO-ing non-ice punch Metagross-Mega. The extra Speed is necessary in order to make Dragonite outspeed Kartana after a single Dragon Dance so that it can then go for the OHKO with Z-Fly on the next turn.

Usage Tips
========

Dragonite is best suited against Pokemon that lack or don't use reliable HP recovery and some form of Defense boosting or Attack lowering, namely Mega Charizard-Y, Aegislash, Meloetta, and Magnezone. Even though Dragonite doesn't have the greatest defensive typing, Multiscale makes it capable of withstanding hits from even most super effective hits, namely Mega Charizard-X's Outrage, Porygon-Z's Ice Beam, Kommo-o's Clangorous Soulblaze, and Crustle's Z-Rock Wrecker. You need to pick your uses of Dragon Dance wisely. or what? sentence feels like theres more parts to it but was left off Ideally, it's best used in matchups against Pokemon that have higher base Speed than you and often run bulk, namely Mew, but it loses to kew Meloetta, Zygarde, and Mega Pinsir. In most matchups where your opponent can't boost their Defense or lower your Attack, you're best suited attacking right away, rather than setting up with Dragon Dance. These matchups include non-Z-Conversion Porygon-Z, Aegislash, Donphan, and Heatran. The Kommo-o matchup is a bit of an exception to the tips provided above, as Dragonite's Z-moves either OHKO Kommo-o even at +1 Defense, or at least drop it low enough for Extreme Speed to pick up the KO. Against Mega Charizard-X, Dragon Dance is usually the ideal play, as they will most often opt to use Will-o-Wisp to hinder your Attack and break Multiscale for them to KO on the next turn with Outrage. Using Dragon Dance will make you faster than them on the second turn, making it so that you can either OHKO them with Z-Outrage if they try to Mega evolve, or 2HKO them with Z-Outrage followed by Extreme Speed if they don't Mega. It becomes a bit prediction based once they know the tech, though; if you predict them to use a move other than Will-O-Wisp, you should Z-Outrage right away, as an Outrage from Mega Charizard-X after a Dragon Dance or Flame Charge will likely KO you. Z-Dragon Dance is only really useful for getting past certain Taunt users, namely Mew and Krookodile, but it also helps for the Landorus-Therian matchup, as Z-Dragon Dance undoes Landorus' Intimidate lowering your attack and boosts you to +1, in addition to undoing a possible Speed reduction from Rock Tomb. Against Donphan, Golem, and Sawk, sawk runs ice punch more than counter (47.1 vs 24.4 % respectively, along with scarf being the most used item), probably shouldnt be included you need to be wary of the potential presence of Counter in their moveset.

Steel type Pokemon like Magnezone, Genesect, Ferrothorn, and Celesteela all help to cover Dragonite's weakness to common Fairy types like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Gardevoir-Mega, Togekiss, and Clefable while being aided by Dragonite's proficiency against the Fighting, Ground, and Fire types that would threaten them, like Mega Charizard-Y, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, Heatran, and Blaziken. Physically Defensive Pokemon like Mega Slowbro, Zygarde, Tapu Fini, and Porygon2 aid Dragonite through dealing with various Pokemon that have either the moves, ability, or raw stats to withstand Dragonite's attacks, like Mega Charizard-X, Mega Gyarados, Mega Metagross, Celesteela, and Mega Aggron. In turn, Dragonite helps these Pokemon out by covering their weaknesses to special attackers and stallbreakers like Mew, Magnezone, Kommo-o, Genesect, and Hoopa-Unbound. Meloetta helps Dragonite by handling particular threats to it, like non-Crunch Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Mega Slowbro, just be wary that you need Laser Focus and Calm Mind in order to reliably handle Magearna, as well as Calm Mind to handle Gyarados and Slowbro. In turn, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, doesnt zcelebrate melo beat zygarde Electrium Zeraora, and Volcarona.

Moves
========

Hurricane is the main move, being boosted by Flyinium to gain perfect accuracy and a considerable boost to power for a single turn. Z-Hurricane's main utility is for covering Pokemon that would resist Dragonite's Dragon type moves, namely slow Tapu Lele, Mega Altaria, and Primarina. That said, being a special attack now means that Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk can no longer deflect their damage right back at you. Fire Blast is an essential move for damaging Steel types. The main Pokemon you hit with Fire Blast are non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Magnezone, Aegislash, Genesect, and Ferrothorn. Extreme Speed is an essential priority attack for picking up KOs against weakened Pokemon. The main scenarios you'll want to have it for are Crustle, Sawk, Carracosta, and Kommo-o, in case your Z-move doesn't OHKO it. Ice Beam is a coverage move that aids to make certain matchups more reliably won, namely those against Substitute users like Garchomp, Landorus-Therian, and Zygarde, though it can also help against opposing Dragonite that lack a Dragon type Z-move, as well as Mega Altaria.

Set Details
========

The 216 HP is for making Dragonite survive a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios. The 16 Def is to ensure Dragonite survives a potential Z-Outrage from Garchomp. The 140+ Special Attack makes Dragonite reliably 3HKO non ice punch Mega Metagross with the combination of two Fire Blasts and an Extreme Speed, in addition to 2HKO-ing non-specially defensive Kommo-o that have been boosted by Clangorous Soulblaze with Z-Hurricane followed by Extreme Speed. The 136 Speed lets Dragonite outspeed 0 Speed base 95 Pokemon, namely Tapu Lele and Zygarde, as well as outspeeding specially defensive variants of Kommo-o that would otherwise not be 2HKO'd by Z-Hurricane and Extreme Speed.

Usage Tips
========

Special Dragonite is more suited going in against Pokemon that can't or don't usually boost their defenses or heal off any damage, namely Mega Charizard-Y, non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, and Donphan. Dragonite no longer has to fear the potential damage deflection from Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk, so it can now just Z-Hurricane right away and pick them off with Extreme Speed. Unfortunately, since Dragonite doesn't possess a viable means of boosting its Special Attack, certain matchups are unfavorable, namely Recover Porygon-Z, Kee Berry Amnesia Mew, and Iapapa Berry Necrozma, as well as losing the potential win against Specially Defensive Mega Charizard-X.

Team Options
========

Meloetta continues to be an asset to Dragonite, covering its weaknesses to Porygon-Z, Magearna, faster Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Slowbro-Mega. In turn, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Genesect, and Crustle. Mega Tyranitar aids Dragonite by covering its weaknesses to specially defensive Mega Charizard-X, Dragonium Dragonite, Porygon-Z, Meloetta, and Choice Specs Greninja. Dragonite backs up Tyranitar by taking care of non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, Mega Altaria, and Kommo-o. Physically Defensive Zygarde covers Dragonite's weaknesses to Mega Charizard-X, Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Ice Punch Mega Metagross, and Metal Sound Aegislash, while Dragonite handles Zygarde's weaknesses to Mega Altaria, Genesect, Kommo-o, Primarina, and Naganadel.

Other Options
=============

A specially offensive set with Z-Draco Meteor can be ran over Z-Hurricane, though, without a sufficiently viable means of increasing the power of its Z-move, in addition to the lacking metagame coverage that Dragon type moves provide, it ends up being outclassed by Z-Hurricane. Choice Band is an option that allows Dragonite to reliably beat Magearna with Earthquake, as long as Dragonite outspeeds it and is bulked to withstand a Z-Fleur Cannon, in addition to giving Outrage nearly Z-Outrage power on each hit. It suffers from not having the ability to pick off Pokemon with Extreme Speed, due to Choice Band locking you into the first move you select, though. talk about how band runs fire punch Groundium with Earthquake can be ran to bait Pokemon that would otherwise counter Dragonite, like Magearna, Mega Metagross, Mega Tyranitar, and Mega Mawile. Protect can be used on Z-move sets to block Fake Out from Mega Lopunny, Zeraora, Mega Medicham, and Incineroar, in order to maintain Multiscale, though you have to sacrifice an important move for it on physical sets. Fire Punch is a move that can be used on Z-Outrage sets to safely beat Genesect, Kartana, Ferrothorn, and Durant

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy types**: Pokemon like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Altaria, and Tapu Fini all withstand attacks from Dragonite either naturally or with the help of moves like Reflect, Will-o-Wisp, and Cotton Guard, and make quick work of Dragonite with their Fairy type moves.

**Coverage attacks**: These include Pokemon that can either safely break Multiscale and KO or have the natural bulk or type advantages to withstand attacks from Dragonite and threaten it with their super effective coverage attacks, namely Outrage Mega Gyarados, Ice Beam Greninja, Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Ice Beam Genesect, and Ice Punch Mega Lopunny.

**Stall**: Stally Pokemon often have sufficient bulk to withstand attacks from Dragonite, as well as either set up defensively to mitigate its damage or hinder Dragonite with some kind of stat-dropping move, and heal off any damage Dragonite does all the while. These Pokemon include Mega Slowbro, Kee Berry Mew, Mega Venusaur, loses to one of the main sets Chansey, also loses to one of the main sets, replace with blissey because of charm and Mega Sableye.

Banned deucer.
Notes:
  1. Multiscale in the overview
    • According to yogi's guide, obvious information (which from what I gather seems to be anything that is /dt-able) is best suited either not being literally defined at all, or talked about why they're useful in Usage Tips, so I did exactly that.
    • Also it was already defined in Set Details-
  2. Z-Dragon Dance in Moves
    • Already covered in Usage Tips
  3. The Landorus-Therian matchup in Set Details
    • Strategy discussion/explanation goes in Usage Tips
  4. Kew in Usage Tips
    • You actually don't lose. Z-DD on turn 1 lets you outspeed Mew on all the other turns, letting you eventually set up to +5 or so and wreck them. The only real threat is Kew with an attack.
  5. Counter in Usage Tips
    • The main point here is the potential of Counter in the moveset, not the frequency of it. While it may not be the most commonly used move, it's still used more than something like Reversal on Sawk or Protect on all three.
  6. Z-Celebrate Meloetta vs Zygarde in Team Options
    • Meloetta actually isn't super reliable here. A Zygarde can just Sub until Power Construct activates and thus have a Substitute eat a +1 Psyshock, granting them free turns to set up. In turn, Meloetta can also CM on a predicted Sub, so it's about a 50/50 on both sides.
  7. #SaveGPLives
    • There's no x there?
  8. Chansey in Checks and Counters
    • Chansey and Blissey go hand in hand with how reliably they beat Dragonite, both doing effectively the same thing, except for the fact that Chansey has its +1 to Defense (Eviolite) immediately, while Blissey needs to use Z-Charm, meaning it has 1 turn of extra vulnerability to physical attacks.
Implemented everything else.

Dragonite is a valuable asset to teams because its ability (RC) Multiscale (RC) allows it to withstand hits from some of the most powerful Pokemon in the metagame, such as Porygon-Z, Mega Charizard Y, (RH) and Magnezone. With more than competent offensive stats, physically and specially, and a loaded arsenal of powerful STAB and coverage attacks, Dragonite is capable of punching through just about any offensive Pokemon, bulked bulky (or "bulk-invested", whichever fits better) and otherwise, such as Meloetta, Zygarde, and Magnezone. Dragonite also has the move Extreme Speed (RC) which gives it also gives Dragonite an opportunity to play around certain matchups that other setup users and tanky attackers simply do not have, namely the ability to pick up KOs against weakened Pokemon, such as Kommo-o and Garchomp after your using its Z-Move and Magnezone after Earthquake. However, despite having a viable means of setting up with Dragon Dance, Dragonite still ends up struggling against Pokemon with the raw bulk, type resistances, or setup to withstand Dragonite's its attacks, namely against Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Lele, and Mega Slowbro. Additionally, there are Pokemon that can play around Multiscale while still advancing their win condition, such as Will-O-Wisp Mega Charizard X (RH) and Mega Gardevoir (RC) and Fake Out + Ice Punch Mega Lopunny and Mega Medicham.

Usage Tips

Dragonite is best suited used against Pokemon that lack or don't use reliable HP recovery and some form of Defense boosting or Attack lowering way to boost their Defense or lower the foe's Attack, namely such as Mega Charizard Y, (RH) Aegislash, Meloetta, and Magnezone. Even though Dragonite doesn't have the greatest defensive typing, Multiscale makes it capable of withstanding hits from even most super effective hits, namely such as Mega Charizard X's (RH) Outrage, Porygon-Z's Ice Beam, Kommo-o's Clangorous Soulblaze, and Crustle's Z-Rock Wrecker Continental Crush / Rockium Z-boosted Rock Wrecker. (whichever you prefer) You need to pick your uses of Dragon Dance wisely; ideally, it's best used in matchups against Pokemon that have higher base Speed than you Dragonite and often run bulk, namely like Mew, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Mega Pinsir. In most matchups where your opponent the opposing Pokemon can't boost their its Defense or lower your Dragonite's Attack, you're best suited attacking right away, rather than setting up with Dragon Dance. Against Mega Charizard X, (RH) Dragon Dance is usually the ideal play, as they (you can change these to it again but ftr I'm reading them as sort of a collective plural now bc it applies to any xzard) will most often opt to use Will-O-Wisp to hinder your Dragonite's Attack and break Multiscale for them to KO it on the next turn with Outrage. Using Dragon Dance will make you Dragonite faster than them on the second turn, making it so that you can allowing it to either OHKO them with Z-Outrage Devastating Drake if they try to Mega Evolve (RC) or 2HKO them with Z-Outrage Devastating Drake followed by Extreme Speed if they don't Mega. It becomes a bit prediction based once they know your opponent knows the tech, though; if you predict them to use a move other than Will-O-Wisp, you should Z-Outrage Devastating Drake right away, as an Outrage from Mega Charizard X (RH) after a Dragon Dance or Flame Charge will likely KO you Dragonite. Z-Dragon Dance is only really useful for getting past certain Taunt users, namely Mew and Krookodile, but it also helps for the Landorus-Therian matchup, as Z-Dragon Dance undoes Landorus' Intimidate lowering your Dragonite's attack and boosts you it to +1, in addition to undoing a possible Speed reduction from Rock Tomb. Against Donphan, Golem, and Sawk, you need to be wary of the potential presence of Counter in their moveset. The ideal play against these Pokemon is to use Extreme Speed to mitigate any potential damage taken from Counter, so that you can then pick up the KO with your Dragonite's Z-Move on the next turn. Against Donphan and Golem, keep in mind that Extreme Speed has a higher priority than their Ice Shard and Sucker Punch.

Outrage is your Dragonite's main STAB (RC) attack and doubles as base move for a powerful Devastating Drake, (comma) Z-Outrage which brushes aside most things foes it hits neutrally that lack absurd physical bulk or hindering status moves, such as Mega Charizard Y, (RH) Porygon-Z, and Meloetta. Earthquake is an essential coverage move for hitting the Steel-types (RH) that would otherwise resist both of your Dragonite's STAB attacks, like Magnezone, Heatran, and Aegislash. Extreme Speed is a useful move for picking off weakened opponents targets after they've been softened up by your Dragonite's other attacks. Some relevant examples that this move helps for matchups against include Kommo-o, Magnezone, Donphan, and Zeraora. Dragon Dance is Dragonite's setup move, boosting both the user's Attack and Speed by one stage per use, and also allows for enables the use of Z-Dragon Dance, which restores the user's lowered stats to +0 before setting up, if ran with Dragonium. Matchups you'll find yourself needing Dragon Dance for include Normalium Z Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Zygarde, and Mega Venusaur. Alternatively, a similar set with Fly over one of your Dragonite's moves and Flyinium Z over Dragonium Z can be ran run, sacrificing matchups against Pokemon that Z-Outrage Devastating Drake would win against, like opposing Dragonite, Zygarde, and Bulk Up Zeraora, (AC) in favor of winning matchups against Pokemon like slow Tapu Lele, Genesect, Primarina, and Durant.

The 216 HP is for making EVs make Dragonite survive a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios, as well as a Z-Outrage Devastating Drake from Garchomp (RC) with the extra 16 Defense. The 124 Speed is for making EVs let Dragonite outspeed Mega Pinsir after a Dragon Dance, (comma) The while 152+ Attack EVs with an Adamant nature is for OHKO-ing enable it to OHKO Z-Conversion-boosted (AH) Porygon-Z with Z-Outrage Devastating Drake after boosting yourself with Dragon Dance, KO-ing KOing Landorus-Therian with Outrage as reliably as possible after a Z-Dragon Dance, and 3HKO-ing 3HKOing Metagross-Mega as reliably as possible with two Earthquakes and an Extreme Speed. Multiscale is an essential ability that allows Dragonite to withstand an attack, at full health, from most Pokemon beyond Mold Breaker users or Pokemon with extremely powerful super effective STAB attacks. The set with Flyinium Z only has one slight difference from the Dragonium Z set in that it has 148 Speed versus Dragonium's 124, the with 24 EVs being taken out of Attack, sacrificing slight reliability of 3HKO-ing 3HKOing Mega Metagross-Mega. The extra Speed is necessary in order to make Dragonite outspeed Kartana after a single Dragon Dance so that it can then go for the OHKO with Z-Fly Supersonic Skystrike on the next turn.

Usage Tips
========

These matchups include non-Z-Conversion Porygon-Z, Aegislash, Donphan, and Heatran. The Kommo-o matchup is a bit of an exception to the tips provided above, as Dragonite's Z-Moves either OHKO Kommo-o even at +1 Defense (RC) or at least drop it low enough for Extreme Speed to pick up the KO.

Steel-type (AH) Pokemon like Magnezone, Genesect, Ferrothorn, and Celesteela all help to cover Dragonite's weakness to common Fairy-types (AH) like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir-Mega, Togekiss, and Clefable while being aided by Dragonite's proficiency against the Fighting-, Ground-, and Fire-types (AH) that would threaten them, like Mega Charizard Y, (RH) Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, Heatran, and Blaziken. Physically defensive Pokemon like Mega Slowbro, Zygarde, Tapu Fini, and Porygon2 aid Dragonite through dealing with various Pokemon that have either the moves, ability, or raw stats to withstand Dragonite's its attacks, like Mega Charizard X, (RH) Mega Gyarados, Mega Metagross, Celesteela, and Mega Aggron. In turn, Dragonite helps these Pokemon out by covering their weaknesses to special attackers and stallbreakers like Mew, Magnezone, Kommo-o, Genesect, and Hoopa-Unbound. Meloetta helps Dragonite by handling particular threats to it, like non-Crunch Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Mega Slowbro; (SC) just be wary that you need Laser Focus and Calm Mind in order to reliably handle Magearna, as well as Calm Mind to handle Gyarados and Slowbro. In turn, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Electrium Z Zeraora, and Volcarona.

Hurricane is the main move, being boosted by Flyinium Z to gain perfect accuracy and a considerable boost to power for a single turn. Z-Hurricane's Supersonic Skystrike's main utility is for covering Pokemon that would resist or are immune to Dragonite's Dragon-type (AH) moves, namely slow Tapu Lele, Mega Altaria, and Primarina. That said, being Furthermore, since it's a special attack, (AC) now means that Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk can no longer deflect their damage right back at you Dragonite. Fire Blast is an essential move for damaging Steel-types. (AH) The main Pokemon you hit with Fire Blast are non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Magnezone, Aegislash, Genesect, and Ferrothorn. Extreme Speed is an essential priority attack for picking up KOs against weakened Pokemon. The main scenarios you'll want to have it for are Crustle, Sawk, Carracosta, and Kommo-o, in case your Dragonite's Z-Move doesn't OHKO it them. Ice Beam is a coverage move that aids to make win certain matchups more reliably won, namely those against Substitute users like Garchomp, Landorus-Therian, and Zygarde, though it can also help against opposing Dragonite that lack a Dragon-type (AH) Z-Move, as well as Mega Altaria.

The 216 HP is for making HP EVs make Dragonite survive a Choice Specs-boosted Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios. The 16 Defense EVs is to ensure Dragonite survives a potential Z-Outrage Dragonium Z-boosted Outrage from Garchomp. The 140+ 140 Special Attack EVs with a Modest nature makes let Dragonite reliably 3HKO Mega Metagross with the combination of two Fire Blasts and an Extreme Speed, in addition to 2HKO-ing 2HKOing non-specially defensive Kommo-o that have been boosted by Clangorous Soulblaze with Z-Hurricane Supersonic Skystrike followed by Extreme Speed. The 136 Speed lets EVs let Dragonite outspeed 0 Speed base 95 Pokemon, namely Tapu Lele and Zygarde, as well as outspeeding specially defensive variants of Kommo-o that would otherwise not be 2HKO'd 2HKOed by Z-Hurricane and Supersonic Skystrike followed by Extreme Speed.

Special Dragonite is more suited going in against Pokemon that can't or don't usually boost their defenses or heal off any damage, namely such as Mega Charizard Y, (RH) non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, and Donphan. Dragonite no longer has to fear the potential damage deflection from Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk, so it can now just Z-Hurricane use its Z-Move right away and pick them off with Extreme Speed. (RH)

Team Options
========

Meloetta continues to be an asset to Dragonite, covering its weaknesses to Porygon-Z, Magearna, faster Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Mega Slowbro-Mega. In turn, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Genesect, and Crustle. Mega Tyranitar aids Dragonite by covering its weaknesses to taking on specially defensive Mega Charizard X, (RH) Dragonium Z Dragonite, Porygon-Z, Meloetta, and Choice Specs Greninja, (comma) while Dragonite backs up Tyranitar by taking care of non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Landorus-Therian, Mega Altaria, and Kommo-o. Physically defensive Zygarde covers Dragonite's weaknesses to Mega Charizard X, RH) Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Ice Punch Mega Metagross, and Metal Sound Aegislash, while Dragonite handles Zygarde's weaknesses to Mega Altaria, Genesect, Kommo-o, Primarina, and Naganadel.

A specially offensive set with Z-Draco Meteor Dragonium Z + Draco Meteor can be ran over Z-Hurricane Flyinium Z + Hurricane, though, but without a sufficiently viable means of increasing the power of its Z-Move, in addition to the lacking metagame coverage that Dragon-type (AH) moves provide, it ends up being outclassed by Z-Hurricane Flyinium Z. The one upside to it is that you don't have to run Speed anymore, since the extra power from Z-Draco Meteor Devastating Drake lets you Dragonite 2HKO Kommo-o even at +1 after Clangorous Soulblaze, which means you can move those EVs into Special Defense, which lets you Dragonite reliably withstand an Ice Beam from Choice Specs Greninja. Choice Band is an option that allows Dragonite to reliably beat Magearna with Earthquake, as long as Dragonite outspeeds it and is bulked has the bulk investment to withstand a Z-Fleur Cannon Twinkle Tackle, in addition to giving Outrage nearly Z-Outrage Devastating Drake-level power on each hit. It suffers from not having the ability to pick off Pokemon with Extreme Speed (RC) due to the Choice Band locking you into the first move you select lock, though. Groundium Z with Earthquake can be ran run to bait Pokemon that would otherwise counter Dragonite, like Magearna, Mega Metagross, Mega Tyranitar, and Mega Mawile. Protect can be used on Z-Move sets to block Fake Out from Mega Lopunny, Zeraora, Mega Medicham, and Incineroar, in order to maintain Multiscale, though you have to sacrifice an important move for it on physical sets. Fire Punch is a move that can be used on physical sets to safely beat Genesect, Kartana, Ferrothorn, and Durant. (AP)

216 HP EVs make Dragonite survive a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Naganadel and Latios,(RC) as well as a Devastating Drake from Garchomp with the extra 16 Defense. The 124 Speed EVs let Dragonite outspeed Mega Pinsir after a Dragon Dance, while 152 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature enable it Dragonite to OHKO Z-Conversion-boosted Porygon-Z with Devastating Drake after boosting with Dragon Dance, KOing KO Landorus-T with Outrage as reliably as possible after a Z-Dragon Dance, and 3HKOing Metagross-Mega 3HKO Mega Metagross as reliably as possible with two Earthquakes and an Extreme Speed. The extra Speed is necessary in order to make Dragonite outspeed Kartana after a single Dragon Dance so that it can go for the OHKO with Supersonic Skystrike on the next turn.

Usage Tips
========

Z-Dragon Dance is only really useful for getting past certain Taunt users, namely Mew and Krookodile, but it also helps for the Landorus-T matchup, as Z-Dragon Dance undoes Intimidate's Attack drop lowering Dragonite's attack and boosts it Dragonite to +1, in addition to undoing a possible Speed reduction from Rock Tomb.

Meloetta helps Dragonite by handling particular threats to it, like non-Crunch Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Mega Slowbro; just be wary that you Meloetta needs Laser Focus and Calm Mind in order to reliably handle Magearna, as well as Calm Mind to handle Gyarados and Slowbro and needs both Calm Mind and Laser focus to handle Magearna. In return, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Electrium Z Zeraora, and Volcarona.

Moves
========

Hurricane is the main move, being boosted by Flyinium Z to gain perfect accuracy and a considerable boost to in power for a single turn. The main Pokemon you hit with Fire Blast are non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Magnezone, Aegislash, Genesect, and Ferrothorn. Extreme Speed is an essential priority attack for picking up KOs against weakened Pokemon. The main scenarios Pokemon you'll want to have it for are Crustle, Sawk, Carracosta, and Kommo-o,(RC) in case Dragonite's Z-Move doesn't OHKO them. Ice Beam is a coverage move that aids to win certain matchups more reliably, namely those against Substitute users like Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Zygarde, though it can also help against opposing Dragonite that lack a Dragon-type Z-Move,(RC) as well as Mega Altaria.

The 136 Speed EVs let Dragonite outspeed 0 Speed uninvested base 95 Speed Pokemon, namely Tapu Lele and Zygarde, as well as outspeeding specially defensive variants of Kommo-o that would not be 2HKOed by Supersonic Skystrike followed by Extreme Speed.

Usage Tips
========

Special Dragonite is more suited going in against Pokemon that can't or don't usually boost their defenses or heal off any damage, such as Mega Charizard Y, non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Landorus-T, and Donphan. This Dragonite no longer has set does not have to fear the potential damage deflection from Counter users like Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk, so it can now (the wording assumes readers read the entire analysis in order, which is ill-advised) just use its Z-Move right away and pick them off with Extreme Speed.

========

Meloetta is an asset to Dragonite, covering its weaknesses to Porygon-Z, Magearna, faster Tapu Lele, Choice Specs Greninja, and Mega Slowbro. In return, Dragonite aids Meloetta by covering its weaknesses to non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Genesect, and Crustle. Mega Tyranitar aids Dragonite by taking on specially defensive Mega Charizard X, Dragonium Z Dragonite, Porygon-Z, Meloetta, and Choice Specs Greninja, while Dragonite backs up Tyranitar by taking care of non-Ice Punch Mega Metagross, Zygarde, Landorus-T, Mega Altaria, and Kommo-o. Physically defensive Zygarde covers Dragonite's weaknesses to Mega Charizard X, Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Ice Punch Mega Metagross, and Metal Sound Aegislash, while Dragonite handles Zygarde's weaknesses to Mega Altaria, Genesect, Kommo-o, Primarina, and Naganadel.

Other Options
=============

The one upside to it is that you don't Dragonite doesn't have to run Speed anymore, since the extra power from Devastating Drake lets Dragonite 2HKO Kommo-o even after Clangorous Soulblaze, which means you can move those EVs into Special Defense, which lets letting Dragonite reliably withstand an Ice Beam from Choice Specs Greninja. Protect can be used on Z-Move sets to block Fake Out from Mega Lopunny, Zeraora, Mega Medicham, and Incineroar,(RC) in order to maintain Multiscale, though you have to sacrifice an important move for it on physical sets. Fire Punch can be used on physical sets to safely beat Genesect, Kartana, Ferrothorn, and Durant.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Stall**: Stally Stall Pokemon often have sufficient bulk to withstand attacks from Dragonite and can either set up defensively to mitigate its damage or hinder Dragonite with some kind of stat-dropping move and heal off any damage Dragonite does all the while. These Pokemon include Mega Slowbro, Kee Berry Mew, Chansey, and Mega Sableye.
