  • Thanks to a Multiscale in conjunction with a decent movepool, Dragonite secures a niche as a decent Dragon Dance Sweeper and late-game cleaner, as it can find plenty of setup opportunities to setup a Dragon Dance.
  • It's also capable of harnessing Flynium Z in order to break past walls such as Defensive Landorus-T and Mega Latias after a Dragon Dance boost.
  • Unfortunately, Dragonite's viability is hurt by it's extremely mediocre speed tier, as even with a Dragon Dance boost, it's prone to being revenge killed by common Choice Scarfers such as Landorus-T and Jirachi if Multiscale is broken.
  • Additionally, Dragonite is extremely vulnerable to Stealth Rock and all kinds of Status. As with Multiscale broken, it will not likely be able to live a super effective hit.
  • Despite having Multiscale and Extreme Speed, Dragonite is heavily outclassed by Mega Charizard X, who has a better typing, a higher damage output with Tough Claws, and higher base speed and Gyarados, who has a better defensive typing and an easier time breaking walls due to Moxie.
  • Overall, it can be difficult to justify the use of Dragonite because of how specific its niche in the tier is.

Usage Tips
========
  • If there are any Pokemon on the opposing team that would otherwise give Dragonite trouble, such as Skarmory, Rotom-W, and Celesteela, avoid setting up until these Pokemon are severely weakened or removed from the match.
  • Setting up hazards is important before setting up with Dragonite, as it requires a lot of chip damage in order to pick up KOes.
  • Dragonite can also be used to punch holes early-game as a wallbreaker.
  • Avoid switching in Dragonite into hazards, unnecessary damage or status, as It needs to be at full HP in order to have a chance at sweeping, to avoid this, try to bring Dragonite through a free switch-in.
  • Use Extreme Speed to finish Pokemon that are low on HP.
Team Options
========

  • Dragonite is primarily placed on Hyper-Offensive teams as a late-game wincon.
  • Dragonite requires chip damage in order to secure and pick up KOes, Entry hazards from leads such as Greninja, and Landorus-T can help it do so. Additionally, Excadrill can also Rapid Spin hazards away against other leads for Dragonite as an added bonus, making it easier for it to setup.
  • Sticky Web support from Ribombee and Araquanid can prove useful, as it allows Dragonite to outspeed faster Choice Scarf users like Kartana and Landorus-T and KO them with the appropriate move, It allows it to outspeed and remove faster attackers like Mega Alakazam without resorting to Extreme Speed.

Other Options

  • Fire Punch is an alternative that lets Dragonite hit Skarmory and Celesteela, who otherwise wall it. Additionally, it also lets it beat Mega Scizor and Ferrothorn without resorting to it's Z-Move. However, being walled by Tyranitar and Heatran generally isn't appreciated, and even with a boost, it fails to OHKO offensive Magearna, making Earthquake the preferred choice.

**Stealth Rock**: Stealth Rock removes Dragonite's Multiscale and strips 25% of it's HP every time it switches in, making it much easier to KO before it can setup, Landorus-T, Mega Diancie and Garchomp are some examples of Pokemon who can set Stealth Rock.

**Faster Choice Scarf users** Faster Choice Scarf users like Greninja, Tapu Lele, or Landorus-T are capable of outspeeding a boosted Dragonite and can revenge kill it with the appropriate move after Multiscale is broken.

**Status**: Burns from Rotom-W and Scald users like Toxapex can make Dragonite close to useless and break Multiscale in the process, Paralysis worsens it's already mediocre speed and makes it easier to KO, and Toxic can place it on a timer, limiting it's overall effectiveness.

**Electric-Types**: Due to Dragonite's lack of Dragon STAB, Zapdos and Rotom-W can reliably wall it, Rotom-W, in particular, can cripple Dragonite by burning it with Will O Wisp. The rather frail Tapu Koko can also use Shuca Berry to survive a +1 Earthquake and in return do major damage with Thunderbolt or Hidden Power Ice despite being unable to take repeated Extreme Speeds.

**Ice-Types and Ice-Type Coverage**: Kyurem-B can live anything asides from a boosted Supersonic Skystrike and can OHKO Dragonite with Ice Beam thanks to Teravolt bypassing Multiscale, Avalugg can survive a +1 Supersonic Skystrike and OHKO it with Avalanche, and Weavile can OHKO Dragonite with Ice Shard after prior damage although Stealth Rock can place it in range of an OHKO from Dragonite's boosted Extreme Speed. Faster attackers such as Landorus-T and Mega Alakazam are also some examples of Pokemon that can use Ice Type attacks to OHKO or heavily damage Dragonite if Multiscale is broken.

**Earthquake immune Steel-Types**: Skarmory and Celesteela can effectively wall Dragonite thanks to their resistance to Supersonic Skystrike and immunity to Earthquake, Skarmory can then proceed to phase Dragonite out with Whirlwind while Celesteela can beat it with the combination of Leech Seed and Heavy Slam, Although both of them have to be wary of the rare Fire Punch.

**Fairy-Types**: Although most of them are unable to withstand a boosted Earthquake as many of them carry a weakness to Ground, Fairy-Types such as Mega Diancie, Tapu Lele, Mega Mawile, and Magearna are all great Offensive checks to Dragonite as they can threaten OHKO it with their STAB moves after Multiscale breaks, Unaware Clefable can wall it, recover damage through Wish or Soft-Boiled and take it out with Moonblast but otherwise falls to a boosted Supersonic Skystrike.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Once Dragonite has expanded it's Z-Move, Physically Bulky Pokemon, such as Toxapex and Mega Slowbro can proceed to tank repeated hits from it, they can also inflict it with status or heavily damage it in return.

Hello, Fawful's Not Awful, we, the QC team, have taken a look at your analysis and have come to the consensus that this analysis needs major work, and if we checked it in the state that it's currently in, we'd rewrite basically the entire analysis.

Here are the issues that I have with the current analysis:

In the Overview, you mention that Dragonite is a solid Dragon Dance sweeper and a solid Pokemon in general, which honestly oversells it quite a lot. On top of this, the Overview does not allude to where Dragonite's niche is useful. There's also no mention of how much competition Dragonite faces for a team slot.

Some of the examples that you bring up in Moves, like Gliscor and Chansey are weird mentions when compared to others such as Landorus-T and Grass-types which would have made more sense. There were also no mentions of Tyranitar and Mega Tyranitar for Earthquake, which are 2 of the most important Pokemon that it hits.

The Usage Tips are all pretty basic and don't really tell me a lot. It also completely misses the point of setting hazards, which you actually want to be up most of the time as Dragonite needs a lot of chip damage to pick up KOes, not just to break Focus Sash and to put frail attackers in range.

While the above things are not significant enough to warrant a QC rejection, things really started to become worrisome in Team Options, which completely misses what type of teams Dragonite is used on. Dragonite is used on hyper offensive teams, not on teams with reliable Defoggers, pivots, Magnezone, or pure wallbreakers like Kyurem-B. This section should've been entirely focused on how Dragonite appreciates hazard support from suicide leads like Excadrill and Greninja and how it synergizes with certain other sweepers.

All things considered, I'm not content with putting the rest of the QC team through patching up the entire analysis and feel obligated to QC reject 1/3 this, as it would be much easier to let someone else write this.

    • Stating that it’s a hidden ability is redundant, since it really doesn’t matter whatsoever. I'll expand on this below but you need to specify how multiscale gives it a niche over other cleaners
  • It's also capable of harnessing Flynium Z in order to break past walls such as Defensive Landorus-T and Mega Latias after a Dragon Dance boost.
  • Unfortunately, Dragonite is let down by it's extremely mediocre speed tier, Leaving it prone to faster attackers such as Mega Latios and Tapu Lele after Multiscale is broken.
  • Additionally, Dragonite is extremely vulnerable to Stealth Rock and Status such as Toxic and Burns. As without Multiscale, it will not likely be able to live a super effective hit.
    • No need to specify the types of status, since it’s incredibly susceptible to all types of status. Stating the obvious with the latter half of this point is also incredibly redundant, seeing how it’s common knowledge.
  • Lastly, Despite having Multiscale and Extreme Speed, Dragonite still faces stiff competition from other Dragon Dancers in the tier such as Mega Charizard X, Gyarados and Mega Gyarados, who all have either better typings or speed.
Let's be real here for a second, this doesn't really give any indication that you know what Dragonite does, seeing that this is incredibly vague at best and doesn't really convey what what niche Dragonite has over any other cleaner. The primary reason you've given is the fact that it has a higher attack stat (or at least implied because of the order of bullets); merge the first two points together and phrase it so that Multiscale is the primary reason for its usage, not the attack stat; possibly expand on what Multiscale allows it to do (eg. allows it to set up on x more consistently etc.)

If you’re going to mention faster threats, you shouldn’t be referring to it’s speed tier without a boost, since we’ll later establish the fact that it will attempt to clean when it has Multiscale up, so this point should reflect the fact that it’s slower than common scarfers like Kart / Lando / Rachi which can revenge it pretty easily, seeing as they all either resist or can easily take an espeed


It would also be helpful if you describe why other cleaners like zard x or gyara are better; at the moment you’ve given no real indication as to why it’s worse than these mons, while also describing why it's outclassed to begin with, since this doesn't give it a good explanation whatsoever.

There's absolutely no reason that you should be stating shit like benchmarks, or saying amplification of power etc. Simply saying that it can achieve certain KO's with the drawback of being slower than xyz is all you need.

  • Don't be afraid to save Dragonite's Z-Move to eliminate a specific threat to your team, as it can make a huge difference in potentially turn a game around.
I'm not going to sugarcoat this; this doesn't tell you how to use Dragonite at all; everything here is incredibly obvious and really doesn't tailor to dnite specifically, especially since these are so vague and generalised. Dnite should be used late game once removing its checks, which this section should reflect. Adding a tip about when to use Fly (without the z) should also be included, since there will be situations where you're forced to use it or is generally the best play.

Team Options

  • As Dragonite requires chip damage in order to secure and pick up KOes, Entry hazards from the likes of Excadrill, Greninja, Ferrothorn and Suicide Lead Landorus-T can help it do so.
    • I mean hazards are important and all but I don't think it's the most important thing to consider moving down this point, since hazard removal is far more important. Read: below
    • There's also no need to specify there set here imo, considering that you can use like defensive or even like whatever item offensive variants on lando alongside it to set rocks or whatever, since you're not strictly using it on ho; unless someone says otherwise, limiting hazard setters those normally found on ho (sans ferro altho if you are doing that idk why you have this mention)
  • Despite being used on Hyper-Offensive teams, Magenzone is a great partner that can trap and eliminate Steel-types for Dragonite.
    • By phrasing it as you've done here, you're basically stating that Dragonite cannot break past steels to begin with. Change this mention to say it has trouble breaking past stuff like steela / scizor etc.
  • Mega Pinsir is a Flying-type sweeper that shares similar checks to Dragonite, allowing one to weaken while the other sweeps.
    • Aside from this core being terrible, it's incredibly vague at best; what particular mons does it wear down for Dnite in order for it to clean?
  • Mega Charizard is another Dragon Dancer for Hyper offensive teams that can also use Zapdos as setup bait, it can also combat Steel-types for Dragonite which it greatly appreciates.
    • What does it actually do for dnite? Like honestly are they honenstly good partners or are you just wasting a teamslot at this point. You're also assuming that the steels are going to be staying in and allowing zard x to remove it outright. Replace this mention with something that wear them down rather than forcing them out.
  • Tapu Koko can set both Reflect and Light Screen to give Dragonite even more setup opportunities, check Celesteela and Skarmory, and remove hazards with Defog if necessary. In return, Dragonite can destroy Grass-types such as Tapu Bulu and Mega Venusaur for it with Supersonic Skytrike.
    • Defog Screens koko sucks, please remove this mention.
I really don't understand how you've not included hazard control on a mon that absolutely needs it; it's absolutely needed when using Dnite. Like there's no point in using it if you're not going to be taking advantage of multiscale, there's no point in actually using it to begin with; you need to assume rocks are going to be up the majority of the time, so having a remover is absolutely mandatory alongside it.

  • Weakness Policy is an alternative to Flynium Z which can be used if your team already has a Z-Move user, But entry hazard becomes insanely crucial as it requires Multiscale to survive super effective hits.
  • Electrium Z with Thunder Punch can act as a surprise option against bulky Water and Steel-types, but for this to work Tapu Koko is mandatory, as well as some prediction.
  • Outrage can be used over Extreme Speed, as its Dragonite's strongest move after it has used up its Z-Move as well as 2HKOing Zapdos and Rotom-W after a boost, But it's generally easy to take advantage of in a metagame dominated by Fairy and Steel-Types.
These options are all terrible; either replace it with something like roost to increase longevity or say that it has no other viable options altogether, since none of these sets are particularly good and don't really do anything notable for it in practice.

    • Mention that you’re generally only using Fire Punch when not running magnezone support, since you’d prefer to hit shit like Magearna harder and not be walled by ttar. Same thing here with the c&c standards; just state the objective facts and not include filler. Stating that it will "pulverise" skarm and steela don't really mean much when both have consistent outs versus Dragonite.
Set Details
========
  • Multiscale is an important ability for Dragonite, halving damage taken when at full HP as well as easing Dragonite's chances to setup.
    • You don’t need to vomit dex info here; just state what it allows you to do.
  • Flynium Z is used in order to give Dragonite access to Supersonic Skystrike. Max Attack and Speed EVs are used to maximize Dragonite's chances for a sweep.

  • A Jolly nature is preferred as it lets Dragonite outrun Max speed Timid Heatran and Tapu Koko after a boost. However, if these benchmarks aren't needed, an Adamant nature can be used in order to amplify Dragonite's power, most notably being able to outright OHKO Shift Gear Magearna with +1 Earthquake, being able OHKO Gliscor with +1 Supersonic Skystrike and Defensive Mega Scizor with +1 Fire Punch after Stealth Rock damage.
This is absolutely filled with filler; you can absolutely convey the same information in a concise manner. There's absolutely no reason that you should be stating shit like benchmarks, or saying amplification of power etc. Simply saying that it can achieve certain KO's with the drawback of being slower than xyz is all you need.

Usage Tips
========
  • Setting hazards is important before setting up with Dragonite, as it needs a lot of chip damage in order to pick up KOes.
  • Avoid switching in Dragonite into hazards or status moves, as It needs to be at full HP in order to have a chance at sweeping, To avoid this, try to bring Dragonite through a slow pivot or free switch-in.
  • However, having Dragonite take a powerful hit can be worthwhile sometimes if it means finally being able to setup.
  • Don't be afraid to save Dragonite's Z-Move to eliminate a specific threat to your team, as it can make a huge difference in potentially turn a game around.
I'm not going to sugarcoat this; this doesn't tell you how to use Dragonite at all; everything here is incredibly obvious and really doesn't tailor to dnite specifically, especially since these are so vague and generalised. Dnite should be used late game once removing its checks, which this section should reflect. Adding a tip about when to use Fly (without the z) should also be included, since there will be situations where you're forced to use it or is generally the best play.

Team Options
========

  • As Dragonite requires chip damage in order to secure and pick up KOes, Entry hazards from the likes of Excadrill, Greninja, Ferrothorn and Suicide Lead Landorus-T can help it do so.
    • I mean hazards are important and all but I don't think it's the most important thing to consider moving down this point, since hazard removal is far more important. Read: below
    • There's also no need to specify there set here imo, considering that you can use like defensive or even like whatever item offensive variants on lando alongside it to set rocks or whatever, since you're not strictly using it on ho; unless someone says otherwise, limiting hazard setters those normally found on ho (sans ferro altho if you are doing that idk why you have this mention)
  • Despite being used on Hyper-Offensive teams, Magenzone is a great partner that can trap and eliminate Steel-types for Dragonite.
    • By phrasing it as you've done here, you're basically stating that Dragonite cannot break past steels to begin with. Change this mention to say it has trouble breaking past stuff like steela / scizor etc.
  • Mega Pinsir is a Flying-type sweeper that shares similar checks to Dragonite, allowing one to weaken while the other sweeps.
    • Aside from this core being terrible, it's incredibly vague at best; what particular mons does it wear down for Dnite in order for it to clean?
  • Mega Charizard is another Dragon Dancer for Hyper offensive teams that can also use Zapdos as setup bait, it can also combat Steel-types for Dragonite which it greatly appreciates.
    • What does it actually do for dnite? Like honestly are they honenstly good partners or are you just wasting a teamslot at this point. You're also assuming that the steels are going to be staying in and allowing zard x to remove it outright. Replace this mention with something that wear them down rather than forcing them out.
  • Tapu Koko can set both Reflect and Light Screen to give Dragonite even more setup opportunities, check Celesteela and Skarmory, and remove hazards with Defog if necessary. In return, Dragonite can destroy Grass-types such as Tapu Bulu and Mega Venusaur for it with Supersonic Skytrike.
    • Defog Screens koko sucks, please remove this mention.
I really don't understand how you've not included hazard control on a mon that absolutely needs it; it's absolutely needed when using Dnite. Like there's no point in using it if you're not going to be taking advantage of multiscale, there's no point in actually using it to begin with; you need to assume rocks are going to be up the majority of the time, so having a remover is absolutely mandatory alongside it.

Other Options
=============

  • Weakness Policy is an alternative to Flynium Z which can be used if your team already has a Z-Move user, But entry hazard becomes insanely crucial as it requires Multiscale to survive super effective hits.
  • Electrium Z with Thunder Punch can act as a surprise option against bulky Water and Steel-types, but for this to work Tapu Koko is mandatory, as well as some prediction.
  • Outrage can be used over Extreme Speed, as its Dragonite's strongest move after it has used up its Z-Move as well as 2HKOing Zapdos and Rotom-W after a boost, But it's generally easy to take advantage of in a metagame dominated by Fairy and Steel-Types.
These options are all terrible; either replace it with something like roost to increase longevity or say that it has no other viable options altogether, since none of these sets are particularly good and don't really do anything notable for it in practice.

Checks and Counters
===================


**Stealth Rock**: Stealth Rock removes Dragonite's Multiscale and strips 25% of it's HP every time it switches in. Again, spewing out dex info isn't really helpful; what does it prevent dnite from doing?

**Status** Burns make Dragonite close to useless and break Multiscale in the process, While Paralysis worsens it's already mediocre speed. Toxic; mention what common mons run status and how that affects its usability.

**Electric Types** Due to Dragonite's lack of Dragon STAB, Zapdos and Rotom-W can reliably wall it, Rotom-W, in particular, can cripple Dragonite by burning it with Will O Wisp. The rather frail Tapu Koko can also use Shuca Berry to survive a +1 Earthquake and in return do major damage with Thunderbolt or Hidden Power Ice. Specify the fact that only these ground immune or neutral electrics actually wall this; koko is pressured by espeed, so note that down somewhere.

**Ice Type Coverage** Faster attackers such as Landorus-T and Mega Alakazam are some examples of Pokemon that can use Ice Type attacks to OHKO or heavily damage Dragonite if Multiscale is broken. Change this point to include Ice-Types as well; include the next bullet as well as Weavile and Avalugg; which removes it after some chip and completely walls it respectively.

**Kyurem-B** Kyurem-B can live anything asides from a boosted Supersonic Skystrike and can OHKO Dragonite with Ice Beam thanks to Teravolt bypassing Multiscale. Why does this need a bullet of its own?

It's a Flying-type, it won't be protected by Misty Terrain. And honestly, considering Dragonite's niche is in Hyper Offense teams, I don't think Tapu Fini should be mentioned, Fini doesn't fit in this archetype (or at least that's my opinion)

Could probably mention / Fire Punch next to Earthquake, dealing more damage to Ferrothorn and being able to hit Celesteela are niche enough to warrant a mention, could also place it in OO.

Dragonite plays two ways on HO: either it is the lategame wincond, or it setsup early and can bust a few holes into things for something else to cleanup later. Personally when I use DNite I leaned towards Adamant since Koko takes a lot damage since it's usually the lead Pokemon and you're going to have SR up, so around the endgame a +1 Extreme Speed should suffice. Not to say Jolly/outspeeding Koko isnt worth it, but Dragonite is really weak without the ADamant so it should be preferred in most cases. I would remove the mention of Jolly jumping Heatran as I don't think many people switch Heatran into it/stay in when Dragonite commonly have EQ and can tank up anything it throws out.

Dragonite is primarily used as a lategame wincond; however, you should mention that if you can determine that Dragonite can't be the wincond early-on, that it can be used instead to punch holes early on or as fodder, since it should only be used on HO teams that allow that kind of playstyle.

I wouldn't mention Magnezone. I know it sees some usage and has written analysis, but it has a hard time trapping stuff in this meta (shed shell skarm, eq/fthrower celes/heatran/focus or vswitch mageanra) and it doesnt really fit on HO-style teams in this meta imo.

I would remove mention of Roost -- Roost is only good on a mono-Fly set, and has no purpose on a set that functions as a lategame wincond -- a roost set on this Dragonite would just lose out to Toxic or Scald burns.

Under Counter options, you need to bring up Landorus-Therian first/primarily, as it is easily one of the biggest threats to it on most teams: Intimidate and Stealth Rocks, and a bunch of coverage options in HP Ice/Z Fly/stray Stone Edge that can be used against it. I would also mention Choice Scarf. While it has Extreme Speed, sometimes a Scarf Pokemon like Greninja, Tapu Koko, or Landorus-Therian can catch it off guard. Toxapex is also good for Haze, unaware Clefable is good, and defensive Gliscor with Toxic off the top of my head.
