Introduction

Throughout the history of Pokemon, Game Freak has elected to allow transfers from older generations. With this, some moves have remained teachable in older generations only, leading to a complex system of move legality issues. This can make teambuilding difficult to plan, especially for the more esoteric, time-limited formats such as Battle Spot Special and other Battle Spot competitions. This article aims to alleviate this by covering relevant move and ability legality issues.

Generation 1: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow

-These Pokemon cannot have any Egg moves, as this was before breeding was introduced.

-All Pokemon transferred from Generation 1 are forced to have their Hidden Abilities.

-Since Pokemon transferred from Generation 1 have at least 3 flawless IVs, Hidden Power Fighting is impossible on these Pokemon.

-All of these Pokemon must come in regular Poke Balls, since Generation 1 games did not record the type of Poke Ball used to catch Pokemon.

-All of these Pokemon can be traded to Generation 2 games before they are transferred to Generation 7.

-All of these moves are TM moves. For information on how to find these TMs, check out this article: https://www.smogon.com/ingame/guides/rby_tms

-Unless otherwise noted, these moves are also available in Generation 3 from Move Tutors. Getting these moves on Generation 1 Pokemon allows the use of them with Hidden Abilities.

-These Pokemon can only be transferred to Generation 7. This does not work with the original cartridge version of the games; it must be a Virtual Console edition on the 3DS.

Just posting this here now: I realize that the Gold and Silver VC games come out fairly soon, so I'm going to add what that'd add in this 2nd post this weekend so I can't get a bit ahead of the game, then add it to the main post if the game does what we expect!

Would Eruption Heatran from Ranger: Guardian Signs be an appropriate addition? Also, the only Event databases I could find both seem to be from DP era, so quite outdated, but I'll drop the links anyway~

Yeah totally! Honestly, our event guides are that out of date, I don't mind just retrofitting that stuff into this article. Once I get through this week of classes, I got a labor day weekend full of nothing, so I could easily just blast through the regular elusive moves, then add the event moves.

I think it fits since the point of this article is if you're playing ingame (especially for one of Gamefreak's weird ass tournaments where past gen stuff may be unexpectedly useful), you can use this guide to see how feasible using certain stuff is. Mentioning that something like say, Heart Stamp Jirachi requires an obscure event is a good way of keeping people in check fast!

Sorry if I'm not supposed to post here but I ran across a PU play asking for a male Human Like mon to be taught TM Captivate in Gen 4 to breed onto Jynx for Z-Captivate. Didn't know whether that was worth adding along with Ally Switch from Gen 5 for Ralts.

Would moves that Pokémon learn in one game but no longer in subsequent games apply for this guide?

I'm sure there are more but I'm thinking specifically about the 4th gen. legendaries; they learn different moves from Platinum onwards than from in Diamond and Pearl . For example, Grass Whistle Shaymin, Pursuit Darkrai, and Heal Block Dialga/Palkia/Giratina.

If this is still on going, I would love to help out. I was gonna make one of these myself until I saw someone else already working on it here.

Can I also suggest ability move exclusive combos, such as counter magic guard Zam from gen 1 and sap sipper, whirlpool perish Azu from gen 2.

If you like, i could go through a few gens for you, and send you them through pm or something. Hope its not dead D:

There is a nicely detailed on-site in-game article that goes over obtaining some of the competitively relavant exclusive XD:Gale of Darkness moves. It doesn't factor in some moves used for sets in more recent generations, though, so here they are:

Of the Refresh Pokémon, the most competitively relevant ones are Pidgeotto (for Mega Pidgeot) and Salamence (for Mega Salamence). Personally, I can see competitive potential in others using it as a Z-move, but this idea isn't seeing use right now.

I'm not too familiar with viable Helping Hand users in Doubles / Triples formats, but the Helping Hand Pokémon that stands out to me is Rhydon.

__________________________________________________

Something to consider with Defog is that there are three Pokémon lines that can breed for this move but still require a parent that learned Defog from the Sinnoh HM. There is no way to breed Defog to them using parents caught in Gen 5 onward. These Pokémon lines are Scyther, Seedot, and Drifloon.

Yeah I'll be updating this some more this weekend. As a note, since we don't have an ETA on the GS tutor moves beyond "this winter", I'm going to use the 2nd post for the updated legalities, so if this goes onsite before the Pokebank update, we'll have an easy fix to it!

Also: Do you guys want me to have Alolan formes separate or together? I'm leaning towards together since Marowak, Exeggutor, and Raichu are going to share tutor moves with their Alolan counterparts anyways.

[I'll edit this post if I find anything else and no other posts reply after this one.]
For XD stuff, I'm probably going to be fairly liberal with what's considered "competitive". For example, pretty much anything with Helping Hand will get mentioned, even though some of it like Banette is pretty questionable. With Refresh, I'm probably only going to mention it on bulky Pokemon, so I probably won't mention it on Pidgeot, but Mega Salamence is a mention for sure.

In general though, XD special moves have commonly come up on certain high ranking teams for obscure competitions (usually doubles stuff like Sinnoh Classic with Dusclops and Follow Me Magmar), so I think it's best to be on the safe side by being liberal here.I might also give a repeat mention for gen 3 tutors here, since I'm thinking I'll use a table of contents for people to get to what they want quickly, so it'd be easy to miss gen 3 tutors if you go straight to XD stuff!

I'll mention the Defog thing for sure too! That's useful info for 6v6 stuff.

ONE FINAL THING: I think I may wait a bit till USUM goes up to have this ready for GP, because there's a good chance that USUM will eliminate the need to mention a lot of ORAS tutors, which would save a lot of space rofl.

Just thought I'd mention that Seedot is in the Field egg group so Smeargle can be used to breed the move on. It's also available in OR so theoretically you could dex nav for a parent with it as well although I haven't tested this.

Edit: Just a thought but once the list is compiled it might be worth checking to see if any of the prior gen moves are dex navigable in ORAS on mons that can be used as parents. Noticed that Serebii's dex has an missing parent for Belly Drum Swirlix that can be dex nav'd for.

I'm okay with seeing the Alolan formes together if they're just going to learn the same moves.

I also specifically mentioned Refresh Pidgeotto because Mega Pidgeot makes a decent Stallbreaker set using it with Work Up in SM UU (and occasionally in ORAS OU).

Thanks for catching this. I tend to forget about Smeargle when looking at Field egg groups, despite knowing how that Pokémon is the ideal chain breeder for that egg group. The ORAS DexNav should also be a potential way to get Defog Seedot, but likewise, I've never seen or tested for it.

To be honest, I totally forgot about this lol.

This would probably still be really relevant to finish for both smogon and gamefreak metagames, so yeah I’ll get back on it! Thankfully, I already planned on using my Fall break to catch up on C&C stuff, so I can add this to my todo list after my chem exam tomorrow!

So now that my chem exam is over, I’m gonna start back on this as soon as I get computer access tonight!

Just a small question while I’m out: what are we considering dream world moves from gen 5 as? There are two relevant ones (Sludge Wave + Disable Gastly, Horn Drill Nidoqueen), but as far as I know, accessing the dreamworld is impossible now. Are these more event moves or not?

Similar enough that classifying them as event moves would probably suffice. Either that or just a subsection of Gen 5. There's no official word on the matter afaik, so whatever organization works best for you (can also be addressed later in QC if someone has a strong objection).

I finally applied a massive update to this, covering the gen 2 VC games, and adding some stuff that has been relevant in a few areas in the past (such as Sucker Punch Golem from last gen's Kanto Classic, etc).

Lemme address this before anything else: I'm seriously considering adding in event moves somehow, since our event moves stuff onsite is extremely out of date as far as I know. However, I'm wondering if that's better as a smaller, seperate article, or if it should be put in here. I'm leaning towards the latter as a seperate section since event moves have as many weird ass legality issues as these moves, but I can see the arguements for that being too much for one article to cover too! If event moves are added to this, I can add them pretty quick at least!

For when this goes onsite, I plan on basically formatting this like a table of sorts that covers: illegal abilities (hence why I got a lot of useless but illegal abilities mentioned atm), important illegal moves, and a section that lists other old gen tutor / tm moves the Pokemon must learn before being transfered to gen 7 if they want them.

Yes, I realize the formating here is inconsitent (I'll be solving that!). The main consistency thing I plan on solving is seperating the "Pokemon families" into just the Pokemon themselves. Reason being is because then we can highlight important LC Pokemon like Abra (at least I think thats important lol), but ignore stupid stuff no one cares about like Dragonair learning Horn Drill. Also, I'm considering organizing the tables under each of these moves by relevant metagames, or adding a relevant metagames category in the tables as well (this I prefer if only because it makes the article smaller, but I can see the arguements for the former if someone wants to just build a team on cart for a specfic format)

The only other conterversial formating thing I'm considering is: since a large part of why I did this was because of Battle Spot Special and Gamefreak's other weird tournament stuff, I wonder if I could update it every 3 months (or shorter for the weird tournaments) with relevant past stuff for the given time limited metagame. It'd take almost zero effort since that's never a large number of mons. Could be a good way to consistently tweet about the article too :P

But before this goes to grammar check land. there's something important I'm gonna need to highlight a bunch of QCers for, since this involves almost every metagame covered on Smogon! I'll make a seperate post mass highlighting relevant QC people!. In the mean time though, I'll start messing around with the formatting tomorrow, and see what people want on that end.

Note: Sorry for the mass wall of highlights QC people. I didn't want to risk using just analyses for this, since there may be small things I miss for the metagames I don't play, and I don't want to risk out of date analyses impacting this either! Only gonna do Flying Press QCers for now because I don't think I need THAT many QCers per metagame at least! But feel free to bring in other QCers, not like this is a private forum!

Time to address the last elephant in the room: "Important Pokemon" is inhernetly a pretty subjective thing for this article focusing on past gen exclusive moves and legality (and maybe event moves if we decide on something. There's a lot of weird ass Pokemon that I put here because the thing that sprung me to even start this thing last year was because Gamefreak loves to make special, time limited formats where weird ass Pokemon like Fissure Politoed end up being pretty relevant!

But I don't think I should be the only judge of that. While this article clearly started with a more battle spot focus (since thats what a large portion of people who play ingame are planning on), fact is, we DO have a noticable amount of people who play Smogon formats on the 3DS. I feel like it'd be wrong to ignore that, so I'm gonna call upon QC members from multiple metagames to help me flesh out this list (big exception is VGC unless event moves get added, you guys haven't dealt with past gen stuff since gen 5 lol).

For what qualifies as "important", here's what I'm personally looking for that can qualify as "important"

1: The Pokemon uses this move in AT LEAST Other Options (duh). I'd prefer if we kept this relevant to gen 6 and 7 since those are the only gens playable online without pain in the ass workarounds.

2: It's a move that would seem cool, but is totally ruined by legality issues (see: Pretty much all the gen 1 and 2 moves Gyarados and Arcanine get when it comes to battle spot specials at least lol)

3. For now, include relevant event moves if you can. No idea if they're going in this article yet or not, but better safe than sorry imo!

4. Feel free to be a bit leniant by what you define as "useful". I'm mainly aiming for this to be a resource for people who are teambuilding Pokemon, and generally know what they're doing. So if you're looking at a Pokemon move and going "eh almost no one uses this, but it could be useful", I don't mind throwing it in!

always gotta tag yourself so you don't forget :P

However, I'm wondering if that's better as a smaller, seperate article, or if it should be put in here.
If the direction you want to go with this is providing a database of competitively relevant hard-to-get moves, here seems like a good idea. Not sure how many there really are.

If I could just interject here for a sec, I applaud you Tmon for making this so thorough! At the same time I'd caution you from making it too thorough. By that I mean right now you list "a lot of useless but illegal abilities...atm". If they're useless, you probably don't need to spend time compiling them. As for the other tiers, maybe look at the usage stats and see for the top mons if there's something that's hard to get or just continue browse through the dex entries (although it may be outdated, people still see it on the dex and will look for it). Though sure, get some input.

Your article, your call. I just don't want to see you sink an insane amount of time into it to try to capture every possible niche. :)

Hey just to be clear, I'm still working on this, just had a rough patch in College and a serious sinus infection this weekend (I wanted to resume this weekend orginally). I'll resume a lot of work on Friday, plan on nailing down the format then. I will also add event Pokemon in their own seperate section!

So as you know, I'm on a quest to get a Fake Out Mew. Why can it not learn Softboiled as well as Fake Out (or any of its other XD moves)? I may have misunderstood, but can't it just be traded over to FRLG/E and be tutored after?

So far, I've not seen any of the 'randomised' sets provide more than one of the exclusive moves on XD, so I tend to agree with your sentiment that it can only have one at a time.

I do recall a shiny mew being banded around on Smogon that had Fake Out AND Hypnosis a few years ago though, so would guess it's edited.

I don't see why you can't have Mew with fake out + softboiled. You can just ramdomly make it get the move on XD then later you can make him learn softboiled on move tutor. The problem is that nowadays you can't get mew at third gen without cheating.

I think that you can say that every pokémon from virtual console must have pokéball, because these games don't mark the ball that was used to capture them.
