Thanks to its coveted Flying-type, two great immunities, and a great movepool, Emolga is an unique offensive pivot. Despite its low base power, Air Slash is a powerful STAB move because only few Pokemon such as Klang, Lunatone, and Raichu resist it and it threatens Grass- and Ground-types such as Ivysaur, Gourgeist-L, and Hippopotas that are the most common Electric checks. Volt Switch lets Emolga pivot out of bad match-ups, granting momentum and chipping Flying-type checks such as Solrock, Corsola, and Carkol. Knock Off lets Emolga cripple its checks such as Klang, Bronzor, and Hippopotas. Emolga's typing and access to Defog allows it to beat common hazard setters including Hippopotas, Vespiquen, and Mudbray. Thanks to Motor Drive, Emolga is able to disturb Volt Switch users such as Raichu, Pikachu, and Klang.

Emolga fits extremely well in VoltTurn cores with other pivots such as Silvally-Ice, Vullaby, and Torracat. These cores enable wallbreakers such as Stonjourner, Machoke, and Galarian Mr. Mime to safely come on the field. Whereas Emolga appreciate their ability to break walls such as Lickitung, Klang, and Corsola. Pokemon such as Gourgeist-L, Pikachu, and Hippopotas that struggle with Grass-types enjoy Emolga's ability to beat them. Rock-types such as Choice Scarf Stonjourner, Solrock, and Lunatone threaten Emolga with their super effective STAB moves, therefore checks such as Machoke, Klang, and Whiscash are appreciated. Likewise Ice-resistant Pokemon such as Klang, Lampent, and Wartortle can handle Ice-types such as Silvally-Ice, Beartic, and Galarian Mr. Mime for Emolga.

Choice Specs Emolga is a special wallbreaker that differs from other Electric-types such as Raichu and Dedenne thanks to its ability to threaten Grass-types and Ground-immunity. Volt Switch enables Emolga to weaken its checks such as Dedenne, Lickitung, and Klang, while letting another teammate switch-in to take advantage of them. Energy Ball allows Emolga to threaten Ground-types such as Whiscash, Hippopotas, and Palpitoad that are immune to Emolga's Thunderbolt and Volt Switch, and is also its best move to hit Electric-types such as Pikachu, Raichu, and Dedenne. Defog can be used as an emergency button to remove entry hazards, but Emolga is an unreliable Defog user due to its Stealth Rock weakness and since it holds Choice Specs, it can jeopardize its team by offering a turn to the opponent as it needs to switch out. U-turn serves the same purpose as Volt Switch but trades significant damage for hitting Electric-immune Pokemon such as Raichu, opposing Emolga, and Hippopotas, however Energy Ball and Air Slash already threaten them to switch into Emolga's moves.

VoltTurn teams are the ones in which Emolga shines the most, since it is part of the VoltTurn core but also loves to come safely on the field due to its mediocre bulk and lack of recovery. Therefore offensive pivots such as Persian and Silvally-Ice as well as defensive pivots such as Vespiquen and Slowpoke are appreciated. Even with Choice Specs bolstering its damage, Emolga is to weak to break through special walls such as Klang, Lickitung, and Dusclops, physical wallbreakers such as Machoke, Fraxure, and Gourgeist-L can break through them. Stealth Rock hinders Emolga's ability to come on the field and pivot with Volt Switch, therefore hazard control such as Hattrem, Vespiquen, and Vullaby make for great partners. While Emolga is immune to Electric-moves, it hardly damages Electric-types such as Dedenne and Raichu and they threaten it with their other moves, as a result another Electric-type check such as Ivysaur, Vibrava, and Gourgeist-L is recommended.

Emolga's threatening Flying-type and great Speedtier enable it to act as a dangerous and fast attacker. Acrobatics and Dual Wingbeat are extremely powerful STAB moves that are only resisted by few Pokemon including Klang, Stonjourner, and Dedenne and also threaten common physical walls such as Shiinotic and Gourgeist-L. Knock Off lets Emolga cripple its checks such as Klang, Hippopotas, and Corsola, but also beat some Flying-resistant Pokemon such as Bronzor and Lunatone. As a result of its typing, Emolga is able to wall some hazard setters such as Vespiquen and Krokorok and therefore remove their hazards with Defog. U-turn lets Emolga chip its checks such as Solrock and Klang and also lets another teammate come in the field safely, generating momentum. Alternatively, Emolga can run Wild Charge as a secondary STAB move that targets Rock- and Steel-types such as Corsola and Klang, however Emolga is heavily crippled by the recoil, especially if not wielding Heavy Duty-Boots. Encore is another option over Defog and U-turn, that let's Emolga punish slower setup such as Klang, Nasty Plot Mr. Mime, and Nasty Plot Gourgeist-L. Running Acrobatics forces Emolga to forego its itemslot and to get chipped by hazards, whereas holding Heavy-Duty Boots lets it rely on the weaker Dual Wingbeat and removes its immunity to Poltergeist.

Physical Emolga fits well in bulky offensive and balance teams looking for a fast attacker with defensive utility. If lacking Heavy-Duty Boots, Emolga appreciates another form of hazard control such as Hattrem and Vibrava that beat Stealth Rock setter such as Mudbray and Stonjourner, that wall Emolga, whereas they appreciate Emolga's ability to handle Vespiquen and its Toxic Spikes. Steel- and Rock-types such as Klang, Stonjourner, and Sudowoodo wall Emolga, therefore Fighting- and Ground-types that can deal with them such as Machoke, Whiscash, and Mudbray make for great partners. Ice-types such as Silvally-Ice, Eiscue, and Beartic threaten Emolga with their super effective STAB moves, as a result Emolga enjoys Ice-type checks such as Lampent, Klang, and Seaking as partners.
