Entei (Serious Analysis) [QC 0/3]

Sorry Honko, but I felt I had to do this. If it doesn't go down well with the mods, I'll ask to collaborate.

Overview
Entei is often seen as the underdog of Fire-types, getting the moves it needed from the 13th event at the end of gen four. However, it is often compared to Arcanine as the latter has been given Wild Charge come this generation, which is a useful tool to defeat water-types. However, in RU, Entei is not supposedly outclassed by anything, and is one of the top threats of the metagame, which is dominated by Bug-types making Entei a useful "anti-metagame" Pokemon. However, to run a physical set, it requires an Adamant nature, which boosts its already phenomenal Attack stat - more than any other fire type in the division. However, this is a disadvantage seeing as 100 base speed is shared by many Pokemon in the tier.

Physical Sweeper
Item: Life Orb/Choice Band
Ability: Adamant
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
-Flare Blitz
-ExtremeSpeed
-Stone Edge
-Toxic/Will-O-Wisp/Iron Head

Comments: Entei suffers from "three-move syndrome" - Entei only has three truly viable moves for his best set, a physical sweeper. Stone Edge gives at least some coverage and Extremespeed, which out-prioritises every normal priority attack - including Sucker Punch, crucially - is very useful in RU. Toxic is Entei's only form of damage against Water and Rock types while using a physical set. The drawbacks of this set are that a combined Flare Blitz recoil and Life Orb.

Additional: Entei requires a rapid spinner on the team however you use it. Claydol and Hitmonlee are usually considered the two best in the tier now that Blastoise has risen up to UU - and because of that, one of Entei's best threats is gone. Will-O-Wisp can also be used to torture Rhyperior and similar physical attackers. Choice Band can also be used along with Iron Head as the fourth move for particularly devastating Flare Blitzes. On the other hand, if anything comes in that resists it and is a physical wall, Life Orb is better, especially since Stone Edge can help you handle the omnipresent flying types left over from the days of Yanmega and Venomoth.

SubCM
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Modest/Timid
-Substitute
-Calm Mind
-Fire Blast/Flamethrower
-Hidden Power Grass

Comments: With all the fear of physical Entei, it's easy to forget what Entei was like before Event Thirteen changed everything. Out of all the possible special sets, SubCM is the best of them. Entei would benefit from its Dream World ability Flash Fire with this set, however, this is unreleased as of October 2011 and will probably never get released. Entei has had its event. Entei basically can't switch, so it's best to do this after any offensive Water or Rock types have been eliminated. SubCM is the same with every Pokemon. HP Grass is essential so that Entei can stay in on Water and Rock types and still deal super effective damage. Grass has excellent synergy with Fire because it is super effective against all of Fire's weaknesses. However, the main drawback of Entei is that it can't switch in to anything - even fire attacks do a lot of damage. This is why Entei is usually classed as a "revenge killer". Switching in Entei should only be done when Flash Fire comes out.

Additional Comments: Rapid Spin is absolutely essential for this set to function. As Ghost types are generally not seen in RU, Claydol is a safe bet. Any Ghost types that do appear can be dealt with by adding a Ghost type to your team. Sableye is the most common as it resists opposing Ghost attacks using its dark typing. Fire Blast is preferred over Flamethrower, although if accuracy is more important to you than power then Flamethrower is always an option, as is Lava Plume if luck always seems to go your way.

Sunnybeamer
Item: Life Orb
Nature: Modest/Timid
-Solarbeam
-Fire Blast/Flamethrower
-Calm Mind
-Stone Edge/Extrasensory/Shadow Ball

Comments: With the advent of the September usage stats, Victreebel and Charizard dropped to RU and sun suddenly got more viable. Entei may not have the best Special Attack in the world, but base 90 is usable, and it gets Calm Mind. The fourth slot is filler. Entei can catch Water, Ground, and Rock types on the switch with Solarbeam, or, if they are slow like Rhyperior, set up for a sweep with Calm Mind. Two base 120 attacks that are not resisted by anything bar the odd Zweilous is no mean asset, especially after a Calm Mind boost.

Additional Comments: Uxie is generally seen as the best sun setup Pokemon in RU, having not only access to Sunny Day but also to Stealth Rock and the two screens. Victreebel and Charizard are staples on a RU sun team and, yes, Entei still needs a spinner to function well.

Other Options: Eruption seems tempting with its 150 base power with 100% accuracy, but in reality testing has shown it doesn't work. Even with Choice Scarf, Entei is outclassed by Typhlosion when it comes to Eruption. Entei is one of the few Pokemon which has a move to boost every stat (Howl, Reflect, Calm Mind, Light Screen, Flame Charge) and therefore can run any sort of set moderately well given a turn to set up. Entei also has access to Lava Plume, which has an impressive 30% burn rate. This is advised over Flamethrower. Entei also has access to the constantly underrated Extrasensory and Shadow Ball.

Counters: The best dedicated Entei counter is Qwilfish, as the only move in Entei's special arsenal that is super effective against it is the rare Extrasensory, and it stops physical sets using Intimidate. Munchlax also gives Entei huge problems, as it can paralyse and attack at the same time and also resists anything Entei throws at it without a +6 CM boost. Entry hazards always give Entei problems. SR plus three layers of spikes means that Entei kills itself after two Flare Blitzes.

Dream World: Entei gets Flash Fire as its Dream World ability, which is much better than Pressure and lets it switch in on something. On the other hand, Flash Fire will probably not be released for a long time yet, and even in the Dream World tier Entei cannot use event moves along with Flash Fire.

For fucks sake, this is not necessary. Honko is just having a bit of fun with his skeleton, and will be much more serious with the actual write up. Oh, and what you have here is worse than what Honko has.
