Feraligatr (Swords Dance)

Done GP checks 2/2 uragg and Fatecrashers

I can make this the official "OU Analysis" if need be.

OU

For years Feraligatr has been unable to distinguish itself in a metagame where Gyarados dominated. In the 4th generation, Feraligatr still struggles to make it onto a competitive team due to its lack of any stand-out stats. Feraligatr does manage to differentiate itself from Gyarados however, with its neutrality to Stealth Rock and access to Swords Dance. While it lacks the raw power that Gyarados wields, it makes up for it with the capacity to boost its Attack twice as fast.

[SET COMMENTS]

Feraligatr has always been in Gyarados's shadow in the OU environment, but Feraligatr has Swords Dance, to boost its Attack twice as fast as Gyarados, and priority Aqua Jet to damage faster foes, which all serve to differentiate it from Gyarados. Feraligatr easily OHKOes defensive Rotom-A, who has next to no chance of OHKOing back with Thunderbolt, even after Stealth Rock (beware of Sandstorm and other residual damage, however). Even if Rotom-A tries to burn Feraligatr with Will-O-Wisp, Lum Berry is there to remedy the status. Return complements Feraligatr's Water-type STAB, hitting every Pokemon in the OU metagame for neutral damage, barring Empoleon. Furthermore, Vaporeon and Suicune cannot do enough damage to Feraligatr before being forced to recover; Vaopreon is likely to be 2HKOed by Return, while defensive Suicune is 3HKOed. An unboosted Hidden Power Electric from either of them is only a 3HKO, allowing Feraligatr to get another Swords Dance under its belt. Aqua Jet is Feraligatr's weapon against faster Pokemon such as Heatran, Gengar, Jolteon, and Choice Scarf Tyranitar; however, you will need residual damage to guarantee OHKOs on said Pokemon.

Because of Feraligatr's pure Water-typing, Electric-type attacks do not completely mutilate it like they do to Gyarados. Also, common revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Jirachi cannot OHKO Feraligatr. Life Orb Starmie also doesn't OHKO Feraligatr with Thunderbolt; it needs Stealth Rock to have a chance. Another big selling point is Torrent. Because of its natural bulk, many attacks can't do enough damage to Feraligatr to OHKO it, usually leaving Feraligatr with 33% or less HP (which will activate Torrent). When attempting to activate Torrent, be aware of how much residual damage Feraligatr has taken, and be sure that it can finish off whatever faster Pokemon that it needs to with Aqua Jet. Many attacks will conveniently activate Torrent after Stealth Rock damage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Aqua Tail is a very viable alternative to Waterfall; with it, Feraligatr can OHKO Rotom-A after Stealth Rock damage and 2HKO Skarmory. However, if you use Aqua Tail for its added power, you will have to forgo Waterfall's perfect accuracy and the possibility of a flinch. Lum Berry is a good item, but it won't always help your sweep. Mystic Water is a good alternative if you'd like a slightly smaller power boost for Feraligatr's STAB moves without the recoil of Life Orb. Life Orb gives you a lot of extra power, but sacrifices Feraligatr's bulk. A Jolly nature allows Feraligatr to outpace Naive Heatran, Adamant Lucario, and Adamant Gyarados. An Adamant nature is perfectly viable, however, as Feraligatr could use the slight boost in power when against bulky Water-types. There is no need to max Speed with an Adamant nature, as Feraligatr is usually naturally faster or naturally slower than the Pokemon in its Speed tier. Pokemon such as Skarmory, Metagross, and Breloom rarely maximize their Speed, so Feraligatr only needs enough to beat defensive Rotom-A.

Entry hazards are extremely helpful for Feraligatr, as they guarantee some vital KOs, especially those with Aqua Jet. With a layer or two of Spikes, Aqua Jet will have no problem OHKOing Heatran and Mamoswine after a Swords Dance. Skarmory and Forretress are recommended as partners for Feraligatr as they are the best Spikers in OU. Skarmory counters Swampert, Metagross, and Scizor without a problem; however, it does share an Electric-type weakness with Feraligatr. Forretress can also set up Toxic Spikes to deter Celebi and Vaporeon, who can cause problems for Feraligatr. A Pursuit user will be extremely helpful, as Starmie is a big threat to Feraligatr; it is faster, can survive a +2 Aqua Jet, and potentially KOes with Thunderbolt. Tyranitar brings in an unwanted Sandstorm, but if you don't mind that, Tyranitar is a great choice since it can also counter the troublesome Zapdos and Rotom-A. Scizor is a decent check to Gengar and Starmie and helps wound enemy walls with U-turn. Gliscor can set up Stealth Rock, counter Lucario, and even lure in Pokemon whom Feraligatr can set up on, such as Gyarados, Suicune, and Vaporeon. If Gliscor uses U-turn as they switch in, you can get Feraligatr in completely unharmed and proceed to set up.

Feraligatr can work well as a lure for defensive Pokemon so other sweepers will have an easier time sweeping. Gyarados often has trouble with Rotom-A, Suicune, and Vaporeon, but if you can weaken them with Feraligatr, Gyarados can then finish off the enemy team. A Pursuit user such as Tyranitar will be all to prevent both sweepers from succumbing to revenge killers. A Choice Scarf Flygon would be most helpful, absorbing Thunderbolts and checking Dragon Dance Dragonite. Heatran can be used as an additional lure, further weakening Water-type switch-ins with Hidden Power Grass and as well as checking Jirachi rather nicely.

OU

Entry hazards of all kinds are most welcome. Since Feraligatr has trouble with offensive Suicune, Toxic Spikes are helpful for wearing it down quickly. They are also useful because they force Celebi to use Recover or switch out sooner than it would like, potentially racking up more entry hazard damage on the opposing team. Forretress and Roserade are two of the best Spikes users in OU; the former is also great for spinning away entry hazards while the latter instantly absorbs Toxic Spikes upon entry, as well as checking bulky Water-types. Calm Mind Jirachi with Wish is incredibly helpful as it can keep Feraligatr healthy and lure in Fire-type attacks for Feraligatr to switch into. With Calm Mind and Thunderbolt, it also has a good chance of beating Calm Mind Suicune one on one. Infernape is a great offensive partner alongside Feraligatr, as it can weaken Water-types with Close Combat and U-turn to a counter, making it easier for Feraligatr to sweep. The same can work in reverse, as Feraligatr can weaken Water-types with Return so Swords Dance or Nasty Plot Infernape can sweep with ease.

OU

Feraligatr has a few additional moves that weren't mentioned. Earthquake can be useful for hitting Metagross and Jirachi super effectively but otherwise has inferior coverage compared to Waterfall + Return. Feraligatr learns Dragon Dance, but that is better left to Gyarados, who, despite having a weakness to Stealth Rock, boasts higher Attack and Speed.

OU

Most of the Pokemon that counter Dragon Dance Gyarados check Feraligatr well. If Rotom-A is faster than Feraligatr, it can survive an Aqua Jet and KO with Thunderbolt. Slower ones need to beware, however, as a +2 Aqua Tail may OHKO after Stealth Rock. Scarf Rotom-A is a great revenge killer. Zapdos is in a similar boat as Rotom-A; if it outspeeds Feraligatr then it will surely win, but if not, it risks being OHKOed. Vaporeon can counter Feraligatr if it has Toxic or Roar, but takes a lot of damage from Return. RestTalk Gyarados is a great counter thanks to Intimidate. Shaymin and Celebi also counter Feraligatr well but shouldn't risk using Leech Seed or Thunder Wave as Feraligatr can 2HKO with Return.

Feraligatr has always been in Gyarados' shadow in the OU environment. With Swords Dance however, it can boost its Attack twice as fast as Gyarados, and utilize Aqua Jet to damage faster foes. After one Swords Dance you become incredibly powerful, 2HKOing nearly every Pokemon in your path. Many of Gyarados' common counters will not win against Feraligatr. Defensive Rotom-A is easily 2HKOed, while it has next to no chance of OHKOing you with Thunderbolt even after Stealth Rock. Beware of sandstorm and other residual damage, however. If they try to burn you with Will-O-Wisp, you have Lum Berry to remedy the status. Furthermore, should you choose Aqua Tail and Life Orb, you have more than a 90% chance of OHKOing standard 252 HP / 168 Def Bold Rotom-A after Stealth Rock damage. Return complements your Water-type STAB, and together hits every Pokemon in the game for neutral damage, bar Dialga, Shedinja, and Empoleon. Vaporeon and Suicune cannot do enough damage to you before being forced to recover. The former is likely to be 2HKOed by Return, while defensive Suicune is 3HKOed.
With purely simple Water-typing, Feraligatr is not completely mutilated by Electric-type attacks like Gyarados is. Common revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Jirachi and Choice Scarf Latias will be able to OHKO Feraligatr with ThunderPunch or Thunderbolt respectively. Life Orb Starmie can also not outright OHKO Feraligatr with Thunderbolt; it needs Stealth Rock to have a chance. Another big Feraligatr selling point is Torrent. With a good amount of bulk, many attacks just can't do enough damage to Feraligatr, leaving it with 33% or less HP (which will activate Torrent). Most non-STAB Thunderbolts will do just that, as well as max Attack Salamence's Outrage and Life Orb Heatran's Hidden Power Grass. Defensive Celebi's Grass Knot, Life Orb Gengar's Shadow Ball, Choice Band Scizor's U-turn, RestTalk Machamp's DynamicPunch (with Lum Berry to avoid confusion), Choice Scarf Tyranitar's Stone Edge, and certainly many more attacks will activate Torrent after Stealth Rock damage.

With a middling 78 Base Speed, maxing it won't get you very far. Opting for a Jolly nature can allow you to outpace Naive Heatran, Adamant Lucario, and Adamant Gyarados, but is ill-advised. Feraligatr needs all the power it can get. Most Pokemon whom Feraligatr does outright outspeed, such as Breloom, Metagross, and Skarmory, very rarely max their own Speed. As such, Feraligatr need not do the same.

In the analysis it says, "Common revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Jirachi and Choice Scarf Latias will be able to OHKO Feraligatr with ThunderPunch or Thunderbolt respectively."

Did you mean that it won't OHKO Feraligatr? Because CS Latias does 64.5% - 76.4% to this Feraligatr with T-Bolt. Jirachi does around 40% to Feraligatr as well. So I'm guessing that it should be

I've seen analyses with "n base stat" getting uploaded so I'm pretty sure base stats need to be undercased, like Snorlaxe's Weezing OU analysis.

I question the viability of this set, especially with Lum Berry as the primary option. With Lum as the primary option, Feraligatr lacks the power to KO most OU pokemon, especially considering it relies on its 40BP Aqua Jet to get the jump on everything above base 80 speed (which is a lot of OU). You mention scarf latias, but the more common Choice Specs Latias blows Feraligatr to shreds with its Draco Meteor, while taking almost nothing from Lum +2 Aqua Jet.

You vastly overstate the set's power with comments like "2HKOing nearly every Pokemon in your path." It sounds like you're going to be sweeping a team with this set, when in reality, you're getting 1 kill max before being revenged, and even less if you can't setup SD in the first place (most things will stay in and can 2HKO you).

Let's face it, Feraligatr has base 105 attack. That's hardly better than Jirachi. And your best STAB is only 80 BP (90 if you want less accuracy), plus when you're using it you have to deal with being outrun with your measly 78 base speed.

I would like to see logs of this Feraligatr doing significant damage to a team. You mention setting up on Rotom-A, but with just a little special attack investment, they OHKO you. You mention setting up on Suicune, but it outspeeds and can dispatch you with HP Electric, hitting you once on the SD, and then again before you can launch a Return. You mention getting into Torrent range by taking Max Attack Mence's Outrage, but Naive LO Mence Outrage does 116-136%. Scarftar's Stone Edge does 75-88%, nearly certainly KO'ing if you factor SR and Sandstorm. In return, a +2 non LO Aqua Jet does only 67-79%, so you lose no matter what.

It may be slow, but I certainly wasn't lying about 2HKOing nearly every Pokemon. The only OU Pokemon that are not OHKOed are Suicune and Celebi (and maybe Forretress, but its set up fodder anyway). You mention barely being better than Jirachi, but Jirachi doesn't have Swords Dance. And I do not say you can set up on Rotom-A, I said you can kill it if it tries to counter you. Obviously, a +1 Salamence will OHKO you with Outrage, but I'm not referring to one that has already Dragon Danced. That be foolish, I'm simply saying you can survive if it tries to revenge kill you. And according to my calcs, the Tyranitar you're talking about is a Jolly one with a Choice Band, not Choice Scarf. Since Torrent is activated, you will OHKO ScarfTar with Aqua Jet, doing 100% minimum. Less than half of Suicune run Hidden Power Electric, so I am referring to CroCune or the regular Calm Minder (who is slower), not offensive Suicune.

Yes, Choice Specs Latias OHKOes you, and Feraligatr is outsped by a lot of Pokemon. However, you can simply switch out. "Team support" comes to mind. You aren't a stand alone sweeper, you have teamates to back you up. Unlike Gyarados, you can afford to switch out, not being weak to Stealth Rock. I believe Quality Control will make the final decision on this set's effectiveness. I made all corrections, thank you for your comments.

Hm, my mistake on the calcs. It seems I had clicked the move DD once on the dropdown menu, putting Mence and Ttar at +1.

Still, max Attack LO Mence does 78% min, with a 1/3 chance to OHKO after rocks. CroCune packs Roar, which will put a stop to your attempts to setup.

I'd like to hear other people weigh in on the set's effectiveness.

Actually there is no reason to use Waterfall when you have Torrent vs Salamence, as Return still does more damage. Either way, this set isn't beating Salamence unless it has taken SR + 2 LO recoils.

Additionally, Crocune doesn't pack Roar or else it would need 5 moveslots.

I'm going to throw this under quality control before I ask for another sweep with grammar check. To me, this set has some potential, but QC might state otherwise. I am going to hint at something though: Max Spe and Jolly should definitely be added here. From what I heard, it outspeeds Timid Heatran and Adamant Lucario, the latter being very important to prevent it being revenge killed by Extremespeed.

I also question the viability of this moveset. Sure, Feraligatr has a cool new priority move to play with, but, here's the question:

What does this have over the other Water type Swords Dancers? Or other physical sweepers, in general?

Take Kabutops, for example. Kabutops has a naturally higher Attack stat of 115 than Feraligatr, and has more speed and defense than Feraligatr as well. Kabutops also has the ever treasured Stone Edge to take out more threats than Return could (i.e. Gyarados and Scizor switch-ins).

In rain, Kabutops becomes even more of a threat because it can OKO many defensive walls after a Swords Dance, whereas Feraligatr falls short of a few percentages. For instance, mostly without Stealth rock up, Kabutops is able to KO all physical walls after a swords dance in rain. With Stealth Rock, the KOs are absolute.

Speaking of weather, if Tyranitar or Hippowdon switches in, Kabutops isn't really dead weight with Life Orb and Sandstorm damage. In fact, he benefits from the sandstorm, having a x1.5 boost from the sandstorm and surviving some weak special assaults. Even if the two Sandstorm-bringing Pokemon switch in, Kabutops can survive some form of physical damage and payback using boosted Waterfall or Aqua Jet (for you Scarf T-Tar Fanboys out there). Note that Kabutops can KO either of them with a higher attack stat. Also, note that Kabutops mostly has rain support with him almost all the time, whereas Feraligatr is less likely to sweep in Rain in such a Sandstorm-infested environment. Kabutops can easily fix the sandstorm using his ability to KO sandstorm-bringing Pokemon and synergize with rain-bringing partners.

With Feraligatr, the weather is situational, whereas Kabutops can be able to sweep even in sandstorm.

Another added benefit of using Kabutops over Feraligatr is that Kabutops' speed doubles, outspeeding many questionable threats like all variants of Rotom and some variants of Latias. With this speed, Kabutops could sweep an entire team if he wanted to, provided whether or not Rain is in play, even on Suicune and Celebi, both of whom Feraligatr hates and Kabutops can severely damage with Stone Edge. Weaknesses are taken into account by his teammates.

I could go on and add Swords Dance Empoleon, Scizor, and Qwilfish in there, but alas, I'd like to hear the advantages of using this in OU.

Kabutops needs rain support, which is pointless to give it to Kabutops if you're only using it by itself. You might as well use a dedicated Rain Dance team for that matter. Additionally, Feraligatr has slightly better defenses, allowing it to set up on more things. Furthermore, the 2 stat points don't make much of a difference because not much in OU that has base 80 Speed threatens Feraligatr. Also, you forget about Torrent, which makes its Waterfalls and Aqua Jets really powerful.

Empoleon is just too slow to sweep and isn't as powerful, while Scizor doesn't outclass Feraligatr because Feraligatr's a Water-type. Qwilfish is actually worse off than Kabutops because it lacks STAB Stone Edge and only really gets Explosion to back it up. Qwilfish also doesn't get Aqua Jet.

Now, Kabutops is perfectly capable of sweeping by its lonesome. It doesn't always need rain support to sweep, but it does need defensive support, which it perfectly lures in with the employment of some few dragon types. Feraligatr, on the other hand, doesn't quite resist or survive that much. On the plus side, I think Feraligatr has the defenses to take a few hits.

However, that defense alone can't protect Feraligatr's survivalbility, counting in Stealth Rock, spikes, Life Orb damage, Sandstorm, and nit-pick damage. It would be best if you employed a tyranitar counter of some sort, have a rapid spinner, and.....hm....maybe Rain support to subside the sandstorm? Possibly.

Um, for the analysis...Gyarados, Suicune, and Vaporeon are all quite capable of preying on Feraligatr's average special defense. Almost all Vaporeon pack HP Electric as a counter to Dragon Dance Gyarados, or they can pack Toxic to run down life orbers. Both moves slow down Feraligatr quite a bit. Suicune can take a return less a waterfall well and CM up. Gyarados lowers Feraligatr's Attack upon switching in and can pick at Feraligatr's Life Orb survivability or Dragon Dance. Of course, you'll have teammates for that.

Now that I did some calcs, I'm starting to see the good side to OU feraligatr. Speed and Physical Wall issues needs to be addressed. Perhaps Bait-Tar should do the trick?

the last one didn't make any sense so i re wrote it to match the descriptions to the right items

I've been testing this set for a while and Earthquake at least deserves a mention sonewhere. Whenever I ran Frustration (sounds cooler than Return imo), I found myself carrying Blissey, Vaporeon, and Swampert to scare Empoleon and Jirachi away, which ultimately slowed the pace of my team down. Earthquake gave me the same KOes with the added bonus of preventing Steel-types for ruining Gatr's sweep so easily (ScarfLatias can bring down Mence/Gyara if they attempt to set something up).

What does this have over the other Water type Swords Dancers? Or other physical sweepers, in general?
Feraligatr's pure Water typing and arguably better defenses are what prevent it from being outclassed by other Swords Dancers; Feraltgatr can take a Thunderbolt/Grass Knot and eats Bullet Punches for lunch, let's see Kabutops do that effectively >_>.

After a bit of testing I made Quality Control's "significant" changes and edited in the grammar checks. Thank you =)

I can make this the official "OU Analysis" if need be.

[SET COMMENTS]

Feraligatr has always been in Gyarados' shadow in the OU environment, but with Swords Dance, however, it can boost its Attack twice as fast as Gyarados and utilize Aqua Jet to damage faster foes. Defensive Rotom-A is easily 2HKOed, while having next to no chance of OHKOing you back with Thunderbolt even after Stealth Rock. Beware of sandstorm and other residual damage, however. If Rotom-A tries to burn you with Will-O-Wisp, you have Lum Berry to remedy the status. Return complements your Water-type STAB, hitting every Pokemon in the OU metagame for neutral damage bar Empoleon. Vaporeon and Suicune cannot do enough damage to you before being forced to recover. The former is likely to be 2HKOed by Return, while defensive Suicune is 3HKOed. An unboosted Hidden Power Electric from either of them is only a 3HKO, allowing you to get another Swords Dance under your belt. Aqua Jet is your weapon against faster Pokemon, such as Heatran, Gengar, Jolteon, and Choice Scarf Tyranitar; however, you need residual damage to guarantee an OHKO on said Pokemon.

Electric-type attacks do not completely mutilate Feraligatr, unlike Gyarados, because of Feraligatr's pure Water-typing. Common revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Jirachi and Choice Scarf Latias cannot OHKO Feraligatr with ThunderPunch or Thunderbolt, respectively. Life Orb Starmie also doesn't OHKO Feraligatr with Thunderbolt; it needs Stealth Rock to have a chance. Another big selling point is Torrent. With a good amount of bulk, many attacks can't do enough damage to Feraligatr, leaving it with 33% or less HP (which will activate Torrent). When attempting to actuate Torrent, be aware of how much residual damage Feraligatr has taken, and be sure it can finish off whatever faster Pokemon it needs to with Aqua Jet. Many attacks will conveniently activate Torrent after Stealth Rock damage.

[Additional Comments]

Entry hazards are extremely helpful for Feraligatr, as they guarantee some KOs, especially those with Aqua Jet. With a layer or two of Spikes intact, Aqua Jet will have no problem OHKOing Heatran and Mamoswine after a Swords Dance. Skarmory and Forretress are the best Spikers in OU. Skarmory counters Feraligatr's issues with [I'm assuming Feraligatr has problems with these guys.] Swampert, Metagross, and Scizor without a problem; however, it shares an Electric-type weakness with Feraligatr. Forretress, while setting up Spikes, can also set up Toxic Spikes which will deter Celebi and Suicune [Most Suicune use Rest. Replace with Vaporeon?]. A Pursuit user will be extremely helpful, as Latias is a big threat to Feraligatr. Tyranitar brings in unwanted sandstorm, but if you can get past that [What do you mean by this?, it is a fine choice. Tyranitar can also counter troublesome Zapdos and Rotom-A. Scizor is a decent counter to Latias, and helps wound enemy walls with U-turn. Gliscor can set up Stealth Rock, counter Lucario, or even lure in Pokemon who Feraligatr can set up on, such as Gyarados, Suicune, and Vaporeon, who oftentimes cannot do significant damage to the crocodilian. If Gliscor uses U-turn as they switch in, you can get Feraligatr in completely unharmed and proceed to set up.

Feraligatr can work well as a lure for defensive Pokemon so other sweepers have an easier time sweeping. Gyarados often has trouble with Rotom-A, Suicune, and Vaporeon but if you can weaken them with Feraligatr, it can finish off the enemy team. A Pursuit user will be all but necessary to avoid both sweepers succumbing to revenge killers. A Latias of your own will be most helpful with absorbing Thunderbolts and for checking non-Dragon Dance Salamence who may become incredibly annoying if it has Draco Meteor. Heatran can be used as an additional lure, further weakening Water-type switch-ins with Hidden Power Grass and also checking Jirachi rather nicely.

Aqua Tail is a very viable alternative to Waterfall. Its main advantage is the possibility to OHKO Rotom-A after Stealth Rock damage, and the ability to 2HKO Skarmory. You trade perfect accuracy and the possibility of flinch for more power. Lum Berry is a good item, but won't always help your sweep. Mystic Water is a good alternative if you'd like a slightly smaller power boost for Feraligatr's STAB moves without the recoil of Life Orb. Life Orb gives you a lot of extra power, but sacrifices Feraligatr's bulk. Jolly nature allows you to outpace Naive Heatran, Adamant Lucario, and Adamant Gyarados. An Adamant nature is perfectly viable, however, as Feraligatr could use the slight boost in power [Does it gain any notable OHKOs?]. There is no need to max Speed with an Adamant nature, as Feraligatr is usually naturally faster or naturally slower than the Pokemon in its Speed tier. Pokemon such as Skarmory, Metagross, and Breloom rarely maximize their Speed, so you only need enough to beat defensive Rotom-A.

Move this entire last paragraph to the top of the [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS] section. Team options are normally presented last.
Good job on this MN.

Um, yeah.

So, excuse my objections earlier and the fact that this thread is barely living, but I suppose this can be a new Swords Dance set if you rename it. Then I can vote for it.

Added all changes and removed any mention of Latias. Could use a fresh pair of eyes to glance over, but other than that its ready for upload. Thanks guys =)

Since there is no Feraligatr OU analysis yet, I would like to see an OU Overview, Team Options, Optional Changes, and Counters section.
