Flareon is a niche special wall thanks to its bulk, typing, and access to Wish, letting it check certain special wallbreakers such as Rotom-F, Rotom, and Abomasnow. Despite this, Flareon finds limited success because it's easily exploited by common Pokemon such as Sandaconda, Lanturn, and Rapidash, and it has four-moveslot syndrome due to it being unable to viably fit both Toxic and Heal Bell onto its set. Toxic is preferred because it prevents Fire-resistant foes like Rapidash and Silvally-Dragon from taking advantage of Flareon as easily, although Heal Bell is good on teams that can support Flareon against such foes and that need cleric support. The choice between STAB moves and natures mostly comes down to whether Flareon runs Toxic or Heal Bell; Flare Blitz and a Careful nature fit better with Toxic, whereas Lava Plume lets Flareon still spread status when running Heal Bell and should be used with a Calm nature.

Flareon belongs on defensive teams looking to make use of its convenient defensive utility. Since Flareon lacks good physical bulk, it should be paired with physically defensive Pokemon like Cofagrigus, Quagsire, and Eldegoss. Eldegoss in particular is helpful because it checks Water- and Ground-types and can run Aromatherapy, which frees up Flareon to run Toxic. Similarly, Lanturn is a nice teammate because it can run Heal Bell and check Water-types. In return, Flareon's Wish support is greatly appreciated by Cofagrigus and Lanturn, which lack a form of reliable recovery. Common special wallbreakers such as Indeedee-F and Abomasnow carry strong coverage for Flareon; use Protect to scout what move they will lock into and then switch into a check like Galarian Stunfisk or Rotom-S. Flareon can cover for these Pokemon by switching into Fire-type attacks for the former and Ice-type attacks for the latter.

Checking flareon offensively tends to be the most relevant pressure for it). Toxic is preferred in general because it prevents Fire-resistant foes like Wishiwashi, Rapidash,(See above, don't want to be inconsistent)and Silvally-Dragon from taking advantage of Flareon as easily, although Heal Bell is good on teams that can support Flareon against such foes and that need cleric support. (Mention how Choice Specs wallbreakers like Abomasnow and Indeedee-F have strong coverage for Flareon in EP and psyshock, and it should be wary / use Protect to scout for this coverage and switch into teammates like Rotom-S and Galarian Stunfisk respectfully; maybe mention the flipside of resisting / being immune to Ice and Fire helps out with the other coverage for these teammates)
