Introduction:

Teambuilding takes on a whole new dynamic in this OU based metagame. In Follow the Leader, every Pokemon on your team has access to ALL of the moves and abilities abilities of the first Pokemon in your teamslot, but you lose access to your own movepool and abilities. Pretty crazy, right?!

For example, if I have a Dragonite in the first slot of my team, Heatran can have access to Multiscale and Extremespeed, however it loses access to Will-O-Wisp and Flash Fire. This creates an interesting and restrictive metagame, as you must now think carefully about which Pokemon you place in your first teamslot, as the rest of your Pokemon's roles will be determined by that decision.

Banlist and Clarifications:

  • If a Mega Pokemon is in the first slot, teammates have access to the BASE form's ability. (MegaZard X cant pass Tough Claws to its teammates, but it can pass Solar Power.)
  • Followers are bound to the same illegalities and restrictions as their leaders (if Clefable is your leader, you cant run Softboiled and Unaware on the same Pokemon.)
Banlist:
  • Standard OU banlist and clauses.
  • Smeargle, Shedinja, Regigigas, Slaking, Huge/Pure Power, Shadow Tag, Imposter, Arena Trap, and Chatter are banned.
  • Aegislash is unbanned.
  • Pokemon / Ability currently under suspect: Nothing @tm
Strategy:

Defensive Leaders

Sableye is one of the best leaders for stall teams thanks to its great support movepool and an excellent ability. It sports gems like Will-o -Wisp, Recover, Metal Burst (Metal Burst Chansey...) Taunt and Fake Out. But the real reason is Prankster, turning its whole team into trolls.

Offensive Leaders

Having one of the widest offensive movepools in the game, Dragonite is an excellent leader thanks to its access to set-up, priority, and powerful attacks like Aqua Tail for water types, Superpower for Fighting types and great coverage moves. Multiscale is also a huge bonus, making the team 50% bulkier.

Protean could be really fun. Granted, you are forced to have 5 competitive offensive Pokémon and Kecleon, but it has a vast physical and special movepool and even Recover for bulkier offens. Unfortunately you won´t have any entry hazards or hazard removal either. Yeah, maybe scratch that Protean.

Mew isby far the best leader in this team since it can learn every TM. It gets hazards (Stealth Rock), hazard removal (Defog), recovery (Recover/Roost), support options like Taunt or Will-O-Wisp or Heal Bell and both physical and special offense (complete with Swords Dance and Nasty Plot). Literally the only reason you should run a different leader is if you want a better ability than Synchronize.

I'm unclear on several things. First, when you say "ONLY" those moves, does that mean if starmie is the first in my slot with natural cure, rapid spin, recover, surf, ice beam, every single one of the rest of my team members must use these exact 4 moves? If not, why do you say only?

Secondly, access isn't clear. Do you mean the ability adds onto or replaces the standard abilities? If it merely adds onto, why are regigigas/slaking/archeops banned?

Sorry if I just misread it.

He means "only" as in you can only use the move and ability pool that Starmie has access to. i.e. Analytic, Natural Cure and Illuminate
In Follow The Leader, every Pokemon on your team has access to ALL of the moves and abilities of the first Pokémon in your teamslot, but ONLY those moves and abilities! Crazy right!?!
Slaking, Regi and Archeops lose their crippling abilities too, making them borked.

This sounds really interesting. I'm going to post some things that I feel might be used later, but before I do, what happens to megas in slots 2-5? Do they work like they do normally? ie if I use mega altaria on a dragonite team, do I have multiscale before I mega and then pixilate espeed after?

This looks really cool actually. Mew is definitely the best first-slot occupier movepool-wise (since Smeargle is banned), but there are tons of other possibilities if you want better options for abilities... An entire team full of Imposter bulkmons, anyone?

Adaptability + Gengar seems pretty beast

Dragalage with access to adaptability and a wide movepull as well as sludge wave and shadow ball stabs I see it working very well.
Also access to:

Draco Meteor, Hydro Pump, Thunderbolt, Icy Wind and Focus blast are pretty cool moves which gengar now gets access to.

I see this being really interesting.

Well...
Spam Contrary team?
We have capital Leader:

Malamar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Jolly Nature
- Superpower
- Knock Off
- Destiny Bond
- Facade

Destiny Bond is removal for any pokemon what can stop this monster. Also he give this set for Hoopa.
Mega Lopuny is nice follower, because we can change this abillity into Scrapy for monstrual damage.
Even burning can't stop this monster.
Destiny Bond scarf Ninjask can quickly remove one pokemon, when oponent use atacking move.
Ghost type is immune into E-Speed. Bannete Mega is much better option for seting Destiny Bond.
What when oponent don't atack my Bond setter?
Is really simple - we starting set up from Super Powers.
Maybe not Bannete, but we have options...

Maybe Ban for Malamar? :P

EDIT 1: some letters being in wrong place. Not very important changes.

Yes you do

I think I can see Sniper+Focus Energy teams being a thing tbh

Kingdra and Octillery are probably the only two acceptable donors for it though, Kingdra because it's able to hold its own with a Sniper + Focus Energy set plus getting alternative setup in Dragon Dance, and Octillery because of its superior offensive movepool.

Dunno if this will end up being any good in practice, but hey, it's an idea.

I like how everyone is talking about Mew Teams and all, but let's face it: Offence got nerfed. Stall and semi-stall, on the other hand, isn't bad at all. Leaders for Stall teams include: Chansey, Slowbro, Mew (again), Slowking, Ferro due to great abilities and moves it can pass to team-mates.

Honestly, Offence only sees hope as a Monotype-esqe playstyle.

I'm sorry, you lost me when you said "only the moves the lead mon has." I don't really like metas that restrict which moves you can use (like this one), because you really lose a lot of valuable coverage, and really get nothing of value in return. Okay, I know I'm stretching the truth, but the basic fact is that you are removing the ability for a certain Pokemon to handle a certain threat.

yeah, I'd kind of have to agree with you here now that I've seen your point since it's unfortunately true that a lot of offensive Pokémon with good movepools don't have good abilities and vice versa

doesn't stop me from trying to make offense work, though

Wait wait wait...so this is just like inheritance, only you can only inherit from whatever you have in first slot, and that first slot may only use its original moves and ability?

I think so, yeah

that obviously makes it a lot more restrictive than Inheritance but that's sort of the point judging from what the OP says

Oh in that case, just rename this "Hand-me-downs"

Well originally they were supposed to be able to keep their original moves and abilities. But The Immortal wouldn't let it slide.

Well originally they were supposed to be able to keep their original moves and abilities. But The Immortal wouldn't let it slide.
Wha?! Now I'm really confused. So each Pokemon gets access to ONLY the moves and ability of first slot, losing access to its original movepol?

So, for example, if I have ditto in slot one, my whole team must use imposter or limber with transform?

^also imposter chansey alert

sin(pi)

lucky n bad
Meta looks cool. Linoone can donate bellyspeed to stuff (atespeed, anyone?), and Hippowdon makes sand somewhat viable as a playstyle (sand force). Pity its special movepool sucks.
Tornadus-T Regenerator squad sounds irritating to break, its movepool is ridiculous too. Good synergy with mega pidgey, giving it No Guard Hurricane and Focus Blast! (And Heat Wave)
Dragonite is possibly better though, it gets boltbeamthrower (and the 110BP versions), FBlast, Hurricane, Surf, Draco... I'm going to make a list of viable moves it has and edit it in to this post.

I'm not convinced Archeops is banworthy straight off the bat. It has the same base attack as Lando-T with similarly spammable STABs, and there isn't a HUGE number of things which give it Head Smash (Tyrantrum and Emboar are cool, and there's Nidoking/Aggron/Hydreigon, but mostly everything else is Ubers or bad).

Also Aegislash can probably get unbanned, given that you either saddle your team with a useless ability + poor movepool, or you just have a wall (admittedly one with an excellent typing and potentially recovery, but not something banworthy).

Ignoring stuff like HP and Rest which everything gets (does everything get Toxic?)
-Espeed (+2)
-Aqua Jet (+1)
-Aerial Ace (barely viable, but your best option for Physical Flying STAB)
-Aqua Tail (arguably worse than Waterfall)
-Body Slam (niche)
-Brick Break (debatably outclassed by Superpower)
-Bulldoze (usually outclassed by EQ)
-Double-Edge
-Dragon Claw
-Dragon Tail
-Dynamic Punch (niche)
-Earthquake
-Facade (situational)
-Fire Punch
-Focus Punch
-Ice Punch
-Iron Head
-Iron Tail (usually worse than Iron Head)
-Outrage
-Power-Up Punch
-Rock Slide
-Stone Edge
-Superpower
-Thunder Punch
-Waterfall

-Blizzard
-Draco Meteor
-Dragon Pulse
-Fire Blast
-Flamethrower
-Focus Blast
-Heat Wave (generally worse than either Fire Blast or Flamethrower)
-Hurricane
-Ice Beam
-Icy Wind (situational)
-Surf
-Thunder
-Thunderbolt

-Agility
-Defog
-Dragon Dance
-Hail (best weather ofc)
-Haze
-Heal Bell (incompatible with Multiscale iirc)
-Hone Claws
-Light Screen
-Rain Dance
-Roar
-Roost
-Sandstorm
-Sunny Day
-Tailwind
-Thunder Wave
-Toxic

Nidoking does seem like it would be a good donor simply due to a combination of Sheer Force and its absurd coverage. One thing that might set Nidoking teams back, however, is the fact that Nidoking lacks any sort of boosting move aside from Hone Claws (and Power-Up Punch, but I think Sheer Force cancels out its attack boost). Still, if the recipients' base stats are high enough, you shouldn't have much trouble (relatively-speaking) pulling a Nidoking team off.

also Kyu-B on a Nidoking team sounds kind of insane tbh

One thing I'm surprised nobody has mentioned yet is Clefable. It has two fantastic abilities in Magic Guard and Unaware, as well as a great movepool across all three move categories, to the extent that pretty much anything would be able to work on a Clefable team. Unfortunately it doesn't have access to any physical boosting moves outside Power-Up Punch iirc, so physical offense is kind of restricted, but Life Orb without penalty on anything via Magic Guard sounds really nice and Unaware + Cosmic Power could wall out nearly anything given that it's passed to something with already-decent defenses.
