Friendliness vs. Intelligence ... which is more important?

(dead man posting)

But A Forum is the only place it makes any sense for me to post here :(

I love Pokemon, I've played 1000+ hours of Pokemon games, but there is no chance I can ever help out here because I know nothing of competitive battling.

I have made two Pokemon-related posts here. One chronicles my Pokemon-playing history and asks for others to do the same, and the other asks if there is interest in speedruns. Neither has gotten a response.

I tried becoming more active by starting groups related to my interests (including generous Pokemon trading). But when I asked a mod they said I should stop doing that, so obviously I should stop doing that.

It's all just bad circumstances I guess. I am a bad fit here. I am 99% sure it is doing more harm than good when I post here, because some people are bugged by my posts (even if it's a small number).

(about to do some harm, maybe for the last time ...)

(Oh, I reserve the right to post another GTS giveaway thread sometime if I feel the urge, unless of course if I get banned or someone tells me I shouldn't do that. That is one tiny way I actually can help. Go on GTS and take my Vulpix! Seriously, right now! I am about to put one up if my previous one is already taken.)

You should really keep in mind that everyone was a noob at one point. I consider myself an at least competent battler (won't comment on my posting ability) yet when I joined I thought Scizor should be Uber. One of the best ways to learn the game is through battling, and through participating in the community. Also, it is important to note that a forum is probably the worst place to start out, as people can be exceedingly harsh, and it can be easy to take from these harsh comments that the community as a whole does not value you, or that you would not be helpful to the community. I personally think Smogon is an awesome place with a lot of awesome people and I would hate to see a user leave because he felt that being a noob was a capital offense.

Was this an unfriendly response?

This forum has a culture that you kinda do need to fit within, but I dont think any one is going to take issue with your posts in the Elder Scrolls thread for instance. It's really when you make new threads that you probably need to have a decent knowledge of how this forum really works or you are going to get into trouble.

Though again, that really is more about certain types of thread, for instance if you want to talk about video games you are probably on pretty safe ground. Just make sure there is content..

This thread actually surprised me how well it worked (yeah it wasnt the best thread in a forums history, but you actually got a couple of interesting or funny responses). Your other thread went wrong mostly because it basically had no content nor chance for anyone to respond with content. From the start it seemed like at best it was going to be replies of just "I dont play competitive pokemon too!"

It's just not the sort of thread that does well here.

Have a nice day.

It really depends on the context I think.

If this was asking "Is friendliness or intelligence more important in your girlfriend/boyfriend" , then it would be friendliness.

But you said "to the world" and I would say intelligence. Because we need intelligence to solve problems.

I feel so sad and I can't tell if it's because Tom wants to leave or if we made him leave, even though i've never posted in one of his threads before but I still feel really guilty and ashamed.

Basically, there's something for everyone at smogon, be it friendly or intelligent or pokemon-related or none of the above!

Ps: try playing mafia, it's a great way to make friends (and sometimes enemies)

you're overthinking it

"how can i be popular on this forum" is the worst way to go about posting, particularly when starting new threads. you just really shouldn't care that much, particularly if you're not even involved in the community in the first place.

also the whole dramatic-goodbye thing is really lame lol you have been here for under a month

I kinda like a forum, should've explored the non Pokemon sections of Smogon earlier, like when Firebot was still alive.

Lying is intelligent, but unfriendly.

Also I thought being new was fun. I think new people just give up too easily.

Think about real life. Do you prefer to be the one with no friends but very smart, or having friends but no intelligence? I'd rather have both, but friends are important, so I would say friendliness is more important.

Well I've never cared as long as someone was friendly and didn't take offense to me criticizing some things about them.
But when someone isn't a friend, I can only start a conversation if they're on my intelligence level or higher.

I think that while both are important, friendliness is more important of the two. While one super-intelligent person can get a whole lot done working by himself, several people of average intelligence can get even more done through collaboration. (Almost) every single achievement in human society has been reached because a group of people put aside their differences in order to work towards a common goal.

All my posts but two are aforum/firebot posts.
Interesting fact: roughly 57% of them contain trollfaces.

I honestly didn't expect this at all, but a couple of people have been asking me not to leave, and I haven't been banned or warned for any of my general stupidity and drama, so I think I will try to start posting here a little. My early experiences here really did take a physical toll from which I haven't recovered just yet, I feel a little pain right now even, but how can I leave when people like Shiny Mew2 are so incredibly nice to me.

But trust me, I'll almost never come up with anything as 'nice' as this thread, lol. I am usually pretty dumb and uninspired. And I ain't kidding :P

edit: Oh yeah, sorry undisputed that I used your post the way I did.

And understood and thanks, Hipmonlee. In that case I really think it's best that I normally don't start threads in this forum. The concept of wanting the forum's threads to be good threads is actually new to me*, strange as that sounds. edit:
Well that's not accurate of course, in fact most of what I say isn't accurate, other places I post want good threads but their standards are totally different. Like a whole thread could be "Hi, where do I find the Lantern in Me and My Katamari?" "Oh, that one guy in the drunk town is holding it, knock him off the pole." "Okay, thanks." and nobody would consider it a bad thread.

edit: Understood, monkfish and Iamslow. But crazy as it sounds, this has really been a drama in my life. I shouldn't have spilled it onto the forum though. I am aware that in the scheme of things I am incredibly insignificant at Smogon, whether I post or not, whether some people like me and/or some people hate my guts and/or I get banned, etc.

Drama (hopefully) over. If I leave again I will (hopefully) do it silently. Somehow this line reminds me of the title Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess.

edit: Since Hipmonlee asked, his post was obviously extremely friendly, more so than I could hope for. I don't see a single unfriendly post in this thread, unless my starting this thread in the first place was unfriendly.
