[OVERVIEW]
Ground
========
Gastrodon acts as a specially defensive wall on Ground teams thanks to its solid defensive typing, decent bulk, reliable recovery, and Storm Drain. Gastrodon's Water immunity prevents fast Water-types like Swift Swim Kingdra in rain and Keldeo from sweeping through Ground teams. Its Ice neutrality allows Gastrodon to switch into Kyurem-B and tank an Icicle Crash from Choice Band Weavile and Choice Band Mamoswine. Gastrodon's high HP and serviceable Special Defense let it tank hits from powerful special attackers like Landorus and Mega Diancie. However, as a result of its terrible Speed and poor Defense, Gastrodon is subject to being taken out by wallbreakers such as Choice Specs Keldeo, Mega Heracross, and Dragonite. Gastrodon competes with Seismitoad for a spot, since they can both provide a Water immunity. Seismitoad lacks reliable recovery, but it's faster and has a better offensive movepool to check Belly Drum Azumarill.
[SET]
name: Specially Defensive (Ground)
move 1: Scald
move 2: Earth Power / Earthquake
move 3: Recover
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Storm Drain
nature: Sassy
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
Scald allows Gastrodon to fish for burns to inhibit physical attackers like Weavile and Mega Lopunny. Earth Power targets Steel- and Electric-types like Bisharp and Heliolisk and punishes Flying-types like Skarmory and Zapdos for attempting to recover HP with Roost. Gastrodon prefers Earth Power, since it can take advantage of Special Attack boosts from Storm Drain, but Earthquake can break Keldeo's Calm Mind-enhanced Substitutes and deal more damage to specially defensive walls like Tentacruel and Empoleon. Toxic cripples opposing walls that aren't bothered as much by Scald burns like Porygon2 and Zapdos.
Gastrodon's immunity to Water gives Ground teams a chance against fast Water-types such as Keldeo and Swift Swim Kingdra. Mega Garchomp's access to Stone Edge and Fire Blast allows it to deal with Mega Scizor, Flying-types like Mega Charizard Y and Gyarados, and Grass-types such as Ferrothorn and Breloom. Excadrill in sand can take out offensive threats like Choice Specs Latios, Deoxys-S, and Celebi. Hippowdon can switch into physical attackers like Terrakion and Excadrill, phaze setup sweepers such as Mega Scizor and Mega Gallade, and passively damage foes by setting sand and Stealth Rock. Mamoswine revenge kills weakened threats with Ice Shard and checks physical attackers like Mega Garchomp and Dragonite. Landorus uses its powerful special attacks and Knock Off to take care of stallbreakers like Mew and Sableye. Nidoking can check Grass-types such as Breloom and Ferrothorn with Flamethrower. It may also set Toxic Spikes, allowing Gastrodon to stall out some of its usual answers like Expert Belt Heliolisk.

Ground
--------
Protect over Earth Power lets Gastrodon scout Choice Specs Keldeo and punish High Jump Kick users like Mega Lopunny and Hawlucha. It can also stall out turns against statused foes and allow Gastrodon to safely heal with Leftovers. However, giving up Earth Power makes Gastrodon much more passive against Skarmory and Zapdos. Acid Armor boosts Gastrodon's poor Defense enough to take on physical attackers like Mega Sharpedo. However, even after attaining Defense boosts, many wallbreakers, phazers, and status users will still force out Gastrodon.
Checks and Counters

Ground
--------
**Chansey**: Chansey can easily switch into any of Gastrodon's moves, heal with Soft-Boiled, and wear it down with Toxic and Seismic Toss. Natural Cure ensures Gastrodon cannot permanently cripple Chansey with Toxic or Scald burns.
**Physical Attackers**: Powerful physical attackers like Choice Band Diggersby and Mega Heracross can overwhelm Gastrodon's mediocre Defense.
**Setup Sweepers**: Setup sweepers such as Mega Gyarados, Volcarona, Clefable, and Mega Latias can take advantage of Gastrodon's poor offensive capabilities. However, Mega Gyarados fears Scald burns unless it has Substitute.
**Stallbreakers**: Stallbreakers like Mew, Crobat, and Sableye have access to Toxic and Taunt, allowing them to wear down Gastrodon.
**Status**: Toxic poison and burn harm Gastrodon's longevity, drastically limiting its ability to function as a special wall.
