Mechanics

This format has been played with the following mechanics:

Colosseum 1Colosseum 2Pokémon Stadium 1

Pokémon Red.jpg
Pokémon Blue.jpg

Pokémon Yellow.jpg

Pokémon Stadium.jpg

In the United States, the Pika Cup was played with Colosseum 1 mechanics during the Pokémon League Summer Training Tour '99; then, when Pokémon Yellow was released in the Americas, Pika Cup was one of the formats that could be played in the new Colosseum 2 multiplayer mode; finally, the Pika Cup reappeared in the game Pokémon Stadium 1 as one of the main formats. The Pika Cup was also featured in the Pokémon 2000 Stadium Tour and the Pokémon 2000 Championship.

Banned pokémon

Mew is banned because it is Uber while the other pokémon are banned for the simple reason that they are not available before level 21 (e.g. it is impossible to catch a level 20 Jolteon in the Gen 1 games using legitimate methods). Ponyta, Seel and Koffing

If you play on Pokémon Stadium 1 in the Free Battle mode, you can also use Ponyta, Seel and Koffing in your team. These three pokémon are only available as Rentals, which means that their levels, moves and stats cannot be modified in any way, still, it is a nice option if you’re a fan of them. Below are the movesets of those Rentals:

:ponyta:

Ponyta
Ability: None
Level: 15
- Fire Blast
- Swift
- Horn Drill
- Reflect

:seel:

Seel

- Surf
- Blizzard
- Headbutt
- Horn Drill

:koffing:

Koffing
Ability: None
Level: 15
- Fire Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Self-Destruct
- Toxic

Ponyta and Seel have Horn Drill, so if One Hit KO moves are banned, you have to decide if both pokémon should be banned or if they should be allowed as long as they don't use Horn Drill.

Special Pokémon that are only available as rentals

In Pokémon Stadium 1 you can also use some “special” pokémon if you play Pika Cup in the Free Battle mode. These pokémon are special because most of them are underleveled (e.g. a level 15 Tentacruel), while others have illegal moves (e.g. a Poliwrath with Double Slap, a move that it only learns until level 25!). Again, since these pokémon are rentals, you can’t change their levels nor their moves. Below is the list of the special pokémon and their movesets:

:gyarados:

Gyarados
Ability: None
Level: 15
- Hydro Pump
- Bite
- Leer
- Rest

Note: This special Gyarados has three moves that it can’t learn at level 15: Hydro Pump, Bite and Leer. You may say that Gyarados learns those moves at level 1 in Pokémon Red and Blue; however, it is impossible to get a Gyarados before level 20 in said games and when you evolve a pokémon in Gen 1 it doesn’t learn its level 1 moves again.

:porygon:

Porygon
Ability: None
Level: 15
- Tri Attack
- Psychic
- Conversion
- Sharpen

Note: Underleveled

In our opinion, these pokémon should be allowed because they are given by the game itself.

Note: Fearow, Kadabra and Exeggcute have Evasion Moves, while Nidorina, Nidoqueen and Nidorino have One Hit KO Moves. If Evasion and One Hit KO Moves are banned, you have to decide if those pokémon should be banned or if they should be allowed as long as they don't used their banned moves.

Pokémon exclusive of the Japanese Pika Cup

In Japan there are other three pokémon that are also allowed in the format, these are Golem, Muk and Kangaskhan. These pokémon can only be obtained via in-game trades that are only available in the Japanese Blue Version. The reason these pokémon are banned in the international Pika Cup is because the Japanese Pokémon games are not compatible with their international counterparts.

Banlist

This banlist can be useful for tournament organizers or players that want to host Pika Cup matches on simulators like Pokémon Showdown:

/tour rules -mewtwo, -mew, -muk, -golem, -kangaskhan, -venusaur, -charizard, -blastoise, -pidgeot, -graveler, -omastar, -kabutops, -articuno, -zapdos, -moltres, -dragonite, -ponyta, -seel, -arbok, -sandslash, -golbat, -gloom, -vileplume, -venomoth, -persian, -primeape, -machoke, -weepinbell, -victreebel, -rapidash, -magneton, -dodrio, -grimer, -hypno, -marowak, -koffing, -weezing, -seaking, -electabuzz, -magmar, -tauros, -eevee, -vaporeon, -jolteon, -flareon, -aerodactyl, -snorlax

Analysis of the format

Pika Cup first appeared in 1998 in Pokémon Yellow; however, it was not until 1999 that it shined in Pokémon Stadium 1. In the Story Mode, the player had to compete in a tournament where he had to win eigth battles to become the champion. The first opponents were easy; however, the last ones were hard. The final opponent was a Fisher that used powerful moves and pokémon. In the Normal Mode, the Fisher had a Dragonair with Dragon Rage and Wrap, while in the Hard Mode he also had two pokémon that were exclusive of Japan (Kangaskhan and Golem)!

Regarding competitive battles, these were fast and furious: the only one turn recovery move that existed was Softboiled, Dragon Rage was a formidable attack and many pokémon had very limited movepools.

Chansey was one of the strongest pokemon of the format since most of her counters were banned (Persian, Tauros and Snorlax were only available after level 20). Jynx was another good pokémon because she learnt Lovely Kiss, while the other Sleep users were frail, slow or had horrible Sleep moves like Sing, which were risky to use due to the presence of Dragon Rage (one miss and your pokemon died in vain). Even if you played in Pokémon Yellow’s Colosseum 2 mode or in Pokémon Stadium 1, Lovely Kiss continued being strong despite the fact that the Sleep status only lasted between one and three turns there.

Dragon Rage users, Chansey and Jynx were the defining aspects of this format. Dragon Rage killed most pokémon with two attacks. Switching against a Dragon Rage user was a terrible idea because it allowed the user to score a super effective attack without any kind of punishment, it was better to let your pokemon die or to use its last turn to attack or spread paralysis. Despite being “broken”, Chansey had a vital role: she walled the Dragon Rage users. Thanks to her high Hit Points and Softboiled, Chansey could survive Dragon Rage, recover energy, paralyze the attacker and cripple it with Ice Beam or Thunderbolt.

Out of the nine Dragon Rage users, Dragonair was perhaps the most interesting. The dragon snake wasn’t fully evolved, had average stats and died with one or two Blizzards from Dewgogng, Jynx or Lapras; however, if it managed to set up a single Agility it turned into a real nightmare, because the only thing it had to do was to chip the opposing team with Wrap and kill them with Dragon Rage once they were in KO range. All those that respected Dragonair knew that they had to paralyze it at all costs or to hit it with strong Ice attacks before it was too late.

Pokémon like Starmie, Raichu, Dugtrio and Tentacruel were also good, because they shut down all of the Dragon Rage users in one way or another.

The last aspect of this format was that it was hard to get certain Pokémon. In some cases you only had to catch a pokémon and raise it, but in others, you had to trade pokemon between different versions. Chansey was, perhaps, the hardest pokémon to get. Low level Chanseys only appeared in the Safari Zone in the Yellow version, something that only happened 1 % of the time.

Pika Cup was and continues to be one of the most interesting formats of the games due to its fast pace nature and unique qualities.

About Dragon Rage

In Overused, Dragon Rage stinks because it causes low damage; however, in Pika Cup it is arguably the best attack because it takes between one and four hits to KO a pokémon. A level 20 Chansey with maximum Hit Points is the only pokémon that dies with four Dragon Rages, Lapras and Wigglytuff die with three; finally, the rest of the cast dies with one or two Dragon Rages (with two being the most common number).

As you can see, having Dragon Rage in Pika Cup is like having an attack that deals Super Effective damage to all pokémon, due to that, Dragon Rage users are very popular in this format. Next is the list of the pokémon that learn Dragon Rage in Pika Cup:

:charmander: Charmander
:charmeleon: Charmeleon
:growlithe: Growlithe
:arcanine: Arcanine
:magikarp: Magikarp*
:gyarados: Gyarados
:lapras: Lapras
:dratini: Dratini
:dragonair: Dragonair

*Magikarp only learns Dragon Rage in Japan.

Despite the fact that Magikarp only learns Dragon Rage in Japan, we still have eight pokemón that learn the move, which is, at least in theory, a good number, we could even build 1.33 teams with them! At first it may sound like a good idea to build a team full of Dragon Rage users; however, if you examine them with more detail you’ll notice that all of them are weak to one or more of the following types: Ground, Electric, Fighting, Grass, Ice, Rock and Water, most of which are common, this means that if you fill your team with only Dragon Rage users, they will be wrecked by fast Pokémon like Starmie, Jynx, Raichu or Dugtrio. The best you can do is to put a maximum of three Dragon Rage users in your team, otherwise you’ll struggle a lot against the pokemon that we mentioned previously.

By the way, Chansey works wonders againts the Dragon Rage users, since she can paralyze them, recover energy with Softboiled and cripple them with Ice Beam or Thunderbolt.

To conclude, use Dragon Rage wisely.

Exploding Moves users

Self-Destruct and Explosion are the strongest moves of the generation because they have a Base Damage of 260 and 340 respectively. Below is the list of the pokémon that learn those moves in Pika Cup:

:geodude: Geodude
:golem: Golem*
:muk: Muk*

Out of all the previous pokémon, Rental Koffing is the only one that learns Self-Destruct but not Explosion.

Partial Trapping Moves users

Note: Rental Tentacruel is only available at level 15 and can't level up; however, you can catch a level 20 Tentacruel in Pokémon Yellow (it also has Wrap).

Tentacruel and Dragonair are the best Partial Trapping Moves users. Tentacruel is fast and has a good movepool while Dragonair has Agility, Dragon Rage and also a good movepool. If you want to play Colosseum 1 and Colosseum 2 Pika Cup competitively, you have to be wary of those two.

Sleep is considered the second best stat that you can inflict on an opposing pokémon in Gen I because it lasts between 1 and 7 turns and it is unlikely that a pokémon will wake up before it dies, in short, using Sleep moves is like using a Fissure that has an accuray of 55 % to 100 %.

Despite how good Sleep moves are, there are not many options in Pika Cup, Exeggutor doesn’t get Sleep Powder, Gengar can’t have Hypnosis, Paras and Parasect lose their only saving grace: Spore, while Sing has a crappy accuracy; finally, the few pokémon that do have Sleep Powder are very frail and die quickly.

As you may guess, Jynx is the only pokémon that learns a good Sleep move: Lovely Kiss, due to this, Jynx is recommended on serious teams, even if you use her in Pokémon Yellow's Colosseum 2 mode or in Pokémon Stadium 1 where the Sleep status lasts between one and three turns.

Critical Hits in Pika Cup

Despite what many think, Critical Hits don’t do double damage in Gen I, instead of that, their damage depends on the level of the pokémon. A level 2 pokémon will deal 1.29 times damage when it scores a Critical Hit; while a level 100 pokémon will deal 1.95 times damage.

Below is the list of the Critical Hit Multipliers of the different levels of the Pika Cup pokémon:

Short version

Level 15 – 1.75
Level 16 – 1.76
Level 17 – 1.77
Level 18 – 1.78

In this link, courtesy of the Bulbapedia staff, you can learn where you need to go or what you need to do to get the pokémon that you want (please remember that Golem, Muk and Kangaskhan can only be caught in the Japanese Gen I versions and thus are exclusive of the Japanese Pika Cup); however, if you prefer videos, you can watch this one which was done by WhoisthisGit.

In the case of Pokémon that are exclusive of the Safari Zone, there is a calculator, courtesy of Hlín “Dragonfree”, that can help you to know which is the catch rate of the pokémon that you want and which is the best strategy you can use to get it. The calculator is in this link.

As you can see, some pokémon are easy to catch, e.g., if you want an Arcanine, you just have to go to Route 8 on Pokémon Red, catch a Growlithe and then evolve it with a Fire Stone; however, other pokémon require more complex methods, e.g. to get an Electrode, you first have to catch a Pikachu, evolve it into Raichu with a Thunder Stone, go to the Cinnabar Islad Lab in the Red or Blue Versions, talk to a Non Playable Character and, finally, trade your Raichu for his Electrode.

In some cases you need to trade between different versions to get the desired pokémon, e.g. to get a Dugtrio, you first need to Surf on Route 12 in the Yellow Version to catch a Slowbro, then, you have to transfer it to Red or Blue via trade or any of the Pokémon Stadium 1 boxes, then, you have to go to the Route 17 gate, trade your Slowbro with a NPC for his Lickitung, transfer Lickitung back to Yellow, go to Route 11, talk to a NPC and, finally, trade your Lickitung for his Dugtrio, dang!

Finally, there are pokémon that are hard as Hell to catch, like Chansey, which only appears in the Safari Zone in Yellow. You have to go to the Central Area of the Safari Zone and pray for a level 7 Chansey to appear, something that only happens 1 % of the time. Oh, by the way, once Chansey appears, you have a 42.28 % probability of catching her by spamming Safari Balls, this doesn’t sound that bad until you remember that you need to catch many Chanseys to get one with good stats!

More Pika Cup Resources

Plague von Karma
made her own site about this format. Her articles include info that is not featured here like a role compendium, Speed Tiers and a detailed analysis of each pokémon (she even built her own individual movesets, that’s what I call dedication!). Thanks to Plague's work I was able to update some info like the special pokémon that are only offered as rentals.

If you want to learn more about Pika Cup you can give a look to her site by clicking this link (to navigate through her site you just have to click the buttons that are at the bottom of the screen, they take some seconds to appear).

More resources of the format

Plague von Karma made a good analysis of this fun format. For those who don´t know, Nintendo Cup 98 was a real life tournament that only allowed level 30 pokémon that were featured in the game Pokémon Stadium Zero, if you want to read more about it, we invite you to click the following link.

A cup for pokémon that have evolved once and can evolve a second time in Gen I. If you want to learn more about this fun format, click the following link.

This was another official tournament organized by Nintendo in Japan. To make things more interesting, Nintendo banned pokémon that got good results on the Poké Cup and the Nintendo Cup 98, also, all mons had to be at level 50. Since we were very curious about this format, we asked our friend Plague von Karma to write an analysis about it, click the link below to read it:

As its name says, this is a format where all Little Cup pokémon fight at Level 100. If you want to know more about this cute, but dangerous format click the link below:

How to get Pokémon with good stats for Pika Cup

The following tips are for players that want to play Pika Cup on the original games (Cartridge, Pokémon Stadium 1 or Virtual Console).

In the simulators we use pokémon with max stats; however, in the real games it is impossible to have Pika Cup pokemon with max stats because it is imposible to maximize their Effort Values before they reach levels 15 to 20, despite that, we’ll give you some advices that will help you to raise your pokemon to the highest possible numbers.

Just a correction on this part.
At this lovely house on route 5 lives a veteran trainer that offer to train your Pokémon for 100$ plus 100$ per level up.
The thing is: when you deposit your Pokémon there, their Lv Exp is reseted because of how the training house works. So, using this little trick with the Box Trick glitch you can keep reseting your Pokémon Lv Exp and keep maxing your Effort at any desired Level.

Pika Cup Individual Movesets

If you’re angry because pokémon like Lickitung or Caterpie weren’t included in the samples or if you want to build a team with a different combination, then you can use the following sets. FOMG and I built a set for each one of the 109 pokémon allowed in the format. By the way, since the Pika Cup can be played with different mechanics, there are pokémon that have two or three sets. Sets that say Colosseum 1 are only recommended for Cartridge matches between any version (Red, Blue or Yellow); on the other hand, sets that say Colosseum 2 are recommended for matches that can only be played between two Yellow versions; finally, sets that say Stadium 1 are recommended for matches that can be played on Pokémon Stadium 1.

Pika Cup Learnsets

Here are the moves that each pokémon can learn. This guide has two purposes, the first is to help those players that want to build their own sets and the second is to help players and tournament organizers to spot players that cheat using illegal moves like Amnesia Slowbro.

These learnsets don’t take Tradebacks into account because they’re banned in standard Pika Cup matches, so don’t expect to see Pokémon like Snorlax with Lovely Kiss or Alakazam with Ice Punch.

Finally, I want to clarify that this post is meant as a general guide because I didn’t put the level nor the version at which each move is learnt (I only wrote in Bold the moves that can be learnt after level 15), one example would be Butterfree, which only learns the Technical Machine Flash in Pokémon Yellow; another example would be Mankey, which doesn’t learn Low Kick in Pokémon Red nor Pokémon Blue. To find specific info regarding level up moves, TMs, HMs and moves exclusive to previous evolutions you can use sites like Bulbapedia (click on this link to go there).

Overused pokémon

-Teleport
-Confusion
-Kinesis
-Disable

Note:
Alakazam can only have Kinesis if it evolved from a Kadabra that was caugth in Pokémon Yellow on Route 8 at level 20.

Other fully evolved pokémon

-Tackle
-String Shot
-Harden
-Confusion
-Poison Powder
-Stun Spore
-Sleep Powder
-Supersonic

Note:
In Pokémon Yellow Butterfree can have Tackle, String Shot and Harden in the same set because it learns Harden when it evolves into Metapod at level 7.

If Beedrill has Poison Sting and String Shot it can’t have Harden in the same set; likewise, if it has Harden, it can’t have Poison Sting nor String Shot. Beedrill can only have Poison Sting and String Shot if it was caught as a Weedle; on the other hand, it can only have Harden if it was caught as a Kakuna, also, be careful, because if you erase any of those moves, Beedrill won’t be able to learn them never again (not even if you use the Move Relearner option from Pokémon Stadium 2).

Note 1: Raichu can only learn Surf as a Pikachu via Pokémon Stadium 1, also, be careful, because if you erase Raichu’s Surf, it won’t be able to learn it never again.

Note 2: Contrary to popular belief, Raichu can’t have Fly in the international versions of the Pokémon games. In Japan, some Flying Pikachus were given away in events and even though they could be evolved into Raichu, they couldn’t be traded to the international versions of the Pokémon games.

-Harden

Note: Unlike Metapod, Kakuna can’t have its three level up moves in the same set. If Kakuna was caught when it was a Weedle it can have Poison Sting and String shot but not Harden (it never learns it); on the other hand, if Kakuna was caught as a Kakuna it can have Harden but it can’t have Poison Sting nor String Shot (like in the previous case, it will never learn those moves). In short, you have to decide if you want Poison Sting and String Shot or Harden on your Kakuna.

have you ever done Pikacup with tradebacks? Seems more interesting to me.
I prefer Pika Cup without tradebacks; however I'm not against trying new things. The problem with tradebacks are New York City moves like Snorlax with Lovely Kiss which can unbalance the game a lot. The other problem with tradebacks is that there is not a list of which moves are legal, something that can force players to check sites like Bulbapedia many times during battles. If I had time I could create a list of legal moves; unfortunately that would take me one year and currently I'm already working in other side projects.

Anyway, if you see me in Showdown you can challenge me to a Pika Cup match with tradebacks.

I tested that mechanic yesterday on the US version on Pokémon Yellow and it never worked. I did many tests with three different pokémon, all had more Experience than the minimum required for their current levels but the Day Care mechanic didn't reset their Experience. By the way, Earth Traveler also tested the mechanic in the US versions of Red and Blue and the mechanic didn't work there either, looks like Bulbapedia lied to us or that the mechanic only works on Gen 2.

Oh, this is interesting. I actually worked on a big spreadsheet for Pika Cup a while ago when I was interested in writing an article. Here it is if you're interested. I'm not sure if it's as good as Beelzemon 2003's stuff though. Feel free to link it on the OP if you like it. It has speed tiers among other bits and bobs.

I should mention regarding the illegal rentals, their stats are fixed and quite frankly, horrible. They're fixed to 12800 Stat Exp and 0 DVs in every stat from what I found in the files. They're quite literally comparable to an optimized Caterpie. I think you should note this in your OP.

EDIT: I also linked some stuff in this thread to the sheet for others to use. May as well make use of what's here, heh. Didn't know about the Effort Value thing, but given the Box Trick stuff is a thing I don't know if I'll switch it up or not.

@Plague von Karma I opened your Excel file again and saw that I had to click the buttons on the bottom to find more info about Pika Cup, I'll give it a look today.
Yeah there's like, a lot in there. If there's a specific maximum value for Stat Exp that we know about, I can very easily replace the number in my equations. There's a ton of stuff on the spreadsheet, though I don't think everything is perfect.

@Plague von Karma Hi again, I reviewed your Pika Cup file last Saturday and wanted to congratulate you for your great effort. Your file is a love letter to all the Pika Cup fans and I want to include it on the main message of this thread. In the meantime, I want to encourage all the players to give it a look at Plague von Karma's file, there's a lot of useful info there, just scroll down the screen to find the buttons that give you access to the different info, here's the link:

At Beelzemon2003's request, I'm posting a sheet I finished a day or two ago: Nintendo Cup 1999! It's a very obscure format, but also really really interesting. I think it could probably be added to Showdown with relative ease since unlike 97, it lacks the Level Range Rule and instead caps it at 50. Buuut we're not here for that.

This includes:
  • Speed Tiers
  • Viability Rankings
    • I took this from Pokemon Battle Historia's website and added an Unranked section at the bottom. Personally I believe there is some tinkering to be had though.
  • Max HP Stats VS Seismic Toss and Night Shade
    • There are a few relevant things here, such as Slowbro at Max HP just barely being able to take 4 rounds of it.
    • There is also old video proof of Slowbro being able to reach 201 HP here. In fact, there's two of them!
  • Analyses for every ranked Pokemon on Pokemon Battle Historia
    • This uses translated movesets from their site, as well as some sets I crafted on my own.
    • It also notes various damage calcs I did during research!

This is REALLY REALLY well done. Props to you. That definitely needs to be properly archived.

Do you have any sample teams for this by the way? I don't normally play stadium, but this feels like a psuedo-UU version of Nintendo Cups. Seems cool to try.

I don't have any sample teams but making them should be easy enough. I'll think about doing it sometime.

How to get Pokémon with good stats for low level Cups

Introduction

The following tips are for players that want to play Gen I in the original games (Cartridge, Virtual Console and the Pokémon Stadium games). These tips apply to Pika Cup, Petit Cup, Nintendo Cup 98, Middle Cup, Nintendo Cup 99, Poké Cup and any format that uses pokémon below level 100. In this article we’ll use the Pika Cup as an example.

Explanation

In the simulators we use pokémon with max stats; however, in the real games it is very hard to have Pika Cup pokémon with max stats because it is very hard to maximize their Effort Values before they reach levels 15 to 20, despite that, we’ll give you some advices that will help you to raise your pokémon to the highest possible numbers.

Okay, let’s begin. Let’s say that you caught a pokémon that qualifies for the Pika Cup and that you know that it has good stats, that is, that it has good IVs or that it has the best IVs on all its stats, now the question is, how can you raise your pokémon so it can have the maximum numbers possible at levels 15 – 20?

All untrained Pika Cup Pokémon fall into one of two groups: Mature and Immature. The raising process varies depending on the group to which your pokémon belongs, we’ll see more about that now:

Immature Pokémon

Immature pokémon are those that can be caught before their desired maximum level, e.g. a Level 3 Pikachu that you want to evolve into Raichu and train until it reaches level 20. I called these pokémon immature not because they haven’t evolved, but because they can be caught before they reach levels 15 to 20. Immature pokémon have a big advantage over Mature pokémon because, since they can be caught before levels 15 - 20, they have more time to gather Effort Values.

To get the highest possible numbers of your Immature pokémon, you have to follow three simple steps:

1. Give them 50 vitamins before starting their training.

2. Train them.

3. Perform the Box Trick.

In the first step you have to give your pokémon 50 vitamins, aka 10 HP Ups, 10 Proteins, 10 Irons, 10 Calciums and 10 Carbos. If you wait until levels 15 to 20 to use the vitamins, your pokémon may not be able to take 10 vitamins for one or more stats (that’s because vitamins can only be used before a pokémon gathers 25,600 Effort Values on a stat).

The second step is easy, you have to train your pokémon by making them fight wild pokémon, for this, I suggest that you pick a place like Routes 1, 2 or Viridian Forest, why? Because those places have wild pokémon of the lowest levels possible, which mean that your pokémon can fight many of them before reaching levels 15 – 20. Sure, it will take a longer time to raise your pokémon to level 20 by only fighting level 3 Weedles or Caterpies; however, for each one that you defeat, you’ll get Effort Values for your five stats (Hit Points, Attack, Defense, Special and Speed), which means that, at the end, you’ll get more EVs by fighting low level pokémon than by fighting, let’s say, many level 20 Geodudes at Rock Tunnel.

The last step is optional, but it can give you an extra point in one or more stats. Once your pokémon reaches the desired level, you have to save the game and then continue training it; make it fight wild pokémon in the same places where you trained it, the idea is to make it earn Experience and Effort Values as much as possible without letting it to level up. Once your pokémon can’t battle anymore you have to perform the Box trick. The trick consists on depositing your pokémon on any of your PC Boxes and then to take it out. Each time you deposit and withdraw a pokémon, its stats are recalculated, so, if it got enough EVs through its battles, it can raise one point on one or more of its stats.

When a stat is calculated, if the number of EVs are not enough to raise it, then, said stat is rounded down and stays the same like if you hadn’t performed the Box trick, e.g. if you have a level 20 Electrode with a Speed of 79.9, the game will round that value down to 79.0. We’re telling you this to let you know that your pokémon stats may stay the same even if you continue training them after they have reached their desired level, still, even if this happens, you shouldn’t feel bad, you won’t lose anything by trying.

Mature Pokémon

Mature Pokémon are those that can only be caught at their desired level, one example would be Tentacruel, which can only be fished at level 20 on Route 20 in the Yellow Version. Although these pokémon have the terrible disadvantage that they can’t level up anymore, they still have some options to increase their Effort Values and their Stats, to do that, you have to follow one of these two methods:

Method 1

This method consists of the following steps:

1. Give 50 Vitamins to your pokémon.

2. Save the game.

3. Train your pokémon without letting it to level up.

4. Perform the Box Trick.

As you can see, this method is similar to the one that we used for Immature Pokémon. First you have to give your pokémon 50 vitamins, then you have to save the game, then, you have to make it fight wild pokémon on places like Routes 1, 2 or Viridian Forest without letting it to level up, and, finally, you have to perform the Box Trick to see if the extra training helped it to earn one more point in one or more of its stats.

Method 2

This method is only for those players that, for some reason, don’t want to use the Box Trick. This method is less effective than the previous one, but it can still work, the method only has two steps:

1. Train your pokémon.

2. Give it 50 vitamins.

As you have noticed, this method is the inverse of the previous one. In the first step, you have to train your Mature pokémon by making it fight low level wild pokémon, again, we recommend places like Routes 1, 2 or Viridian forest which have Pokémon of levels 2 to 9. Before beginning the training, it is highly advisable that you save your game, that way you won’t risk leveling up your pokémon by accident, also, each time your pokémon wins a battle you have to check its Experience to give you an idea of how many more battles it can fight before leveling up. The training will stop once your pokémon can’t gather more Experience without leveling up.

The second and final step is simple, just give your pokémon 50 vitamins. Each time you give a vitamin to a pokémon, the game recalculates its stats taking into account all the Effort Values that it got with that vitamin AND that it gathered via battles, so, if your pokémon gathered 100 Effort Values on Attack from its training and you also give it a Protein, the game will add 2,660 Effort Values to its Attack stat (100 EVs from the training and 2,560 from the Protein), this may make its Attack stat to raise one unit, and even if it does not, it will certainly do after you give it 9 more Proteins. Now you know why you trained your Pokémon before giving it its Vitamins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the above tips also work for getting level 100 pokémon with good stats?

Of course! Also, since level 100 pokémon have more time to gather EVs, the process is a lot easier and it is very likely that you won’t have to use the Box Trick at all.

Do I need pokémon with max stats if I only want to beat the games’ cups?

No, if you only want to play against the in-game trainers you don’t need pokémon with max stats nor competitive movesets. It is true that using a team of 6 pokémon with max stats and competitive movesets can give you a huge advantage to beat, let´s say, the Poké Cup in Pokémon Stadium 1; however, you can also finish that cup using other pokémon and other moves.

Ok, I don’t want to use pokémon with max stats to beat the games; however, do you have any tips that can help me to increase my odds of winning?

Of course, here are some basic tips that will help you to win:

1. The most important advice is to use pokémon from the Game Boy cartridges instead of Rentals. Rental pokémon have bad stats and movesets that will handicap you a lot, especially if you try to beat the Round 2 on Pokémon Stadium 1.

2. Capture many pokémon of the same kind, for example, if you want to use a Dratini in your Petit Cup team, it is advisable that you capture many Dratinis, write its stats and choose the one that has the highest total sum.

3. In the case of pokémon that only appear once, like Articuno, simply catch it on your first encounter, don’t soft reset the game many times (remember that your goal is just to beat the game, not to get an Articuno with max stats).

4. Use the methods we described above to train your pokémon. If you don’t care much about getting a lot of EVs, just fight against mons of higher levels, e.g. if you’re training a Zapdos for the Poké Cup, make it fight wild pokémon on Route 21.

5. Try to have a balance between offense and defense, teach your pokémon attacks and status moves, e.g. in the case of Chansey in the Pika Cup, you can teach her two attacks like Ice Beam and Thunderbolt, one status move like Thunder Wave and one Recovery move like Softboiled.

6. Have fun! The most important part of any game is to enjoy it.

How many pokémon of the same kind should I catch?

For players that only want to beat the games, I’d recommend catching between 10 and 20 pokémon of the same kind, e.g. 20 Dragonairs.

Pika Cup Update
Beelzemon2003 pointed out to me that I missed a few illegal Rental Pokemon for Pika Cup, so I decided to update my spreadsheet.

So here are the overall changes:
  • Updated illegal rentals with Cloyster, Poliwrath and Gyarados.
  • Added elaborated descriptions to the illegal Rental list. Rather than now be in Notes that are difficult to view on Mobile, there's now a description box below.
    • Also did this for illegal Trainer Pokemon. I split the Fisher to "separate" entries due to the horrible aesthetic as a result of the change before separation.
  • Added the 3 Rental-exclusive Pokemon to the speed tiers; Ponyta, Seel and Koffing.
    • Due to their low stats, they are significantly slower than you would expect if we assume Max DVs and Stat Exp (though this isn't exactly possible to achieve). Ponyta is between the Base-30s and 35s, Seel and Koffing are literally the slowest Pokemon in the format.
  • Updated the Sandshrew analysis with an L17 Slash set. It's the only Slash user in the entire format, with the only other crit-based Pokemon being...Beedrill and Scyther with Stadium Focus Energy. Sandshrew has a Slash crit rate of 90.63% if my calcs are correct. It's less reliant on setup and has more consistent damage output compared to the Swords Dance set, giving it a more visible niche over it. The mon isn't the best, but hey.
  • Reformatted the Focus Energy Stats for Beedrill and Scyther. All aesthetic with the aim of being in line with the NC99 format.
  • Rental Pokemon are now marked in my resources with a Magenta colour to match Stadium.
I also had an idea about making an Exp Sheet to try and better understand the maximum amount of Stat Exp a Pokemon could feasibly get, but it's such a complicated thing that I'm not sure if it's worth it. There's the base stats to note, the exp equation, lowest and highest possible encounter levels, trainer exp, for all 151 Pokemon technically. Then there's actually like, doing stuff with the data.

Nintendo Cup 1999 Update
I've added a comprehensive Critical Hit chance page to the spreadsheet. However, as I do not know whether the 1/256 Crit uncertainty was transferred into Stadium, I added a maximum of 99.6% just to be sure. Not that the 0.4% really matters that much, but I want to try and stay as accurate as possible while being safe. If anyone can find out if this uncertainty exists then let me know; personally I have not witnessed a Persian Slash crit fail in Stadium.

This new page contains:
  • Every possible Critical Hit chance for each Pokemon in Nintendo Cup 1999, ordered by Speed Tier.
  • Karate Chop / Slash / Crabhammer / Razor Leaf Critical Hit Chances
    • Mostly 99.6%s but you can also laugh at Parasect having an 82.81% chance of landing a crit.
  • Focus Energy Critical Hit Chances
  • As with other resources, a quick link to the analysis of a Pokemon should they be on the VR.
If a Speed Tier lacks a Pokemon with the relevant modifier to critical hits, I have an N/A attached so you don't get confused thinking "Yo Karate Chop Poliwrath tho???" when the Pokemon doesn't get it. All of this information could already be seen on an analysis page, but I think just having the info on a quick reference sheet is very handy. Plus, it shows the crit rates for unranked Pokemon such as Scyther!

Sample Teams for NC99 are also currently indev, just got to sit down and think more. I've put on 4, including two replicas of teams seen in this old 64 Mario Stadium broadcast here. However, I could easily make more in my time. Hope you like em, Sevi 7!

Nintendo Cup 1998 Original Top Cut Teams
1590359726934.png
Quarantine really has me acting strange. I did some digging and happened upon a Japanese website that had the listings for the Nintendo Cup 98 representatives in Stadium 2 JP. So, I decided to translate and turn them into Sample Teams. 2 hours later and I've got them all in Pokepastes. Some of the movesets are really good, others are a bit iffy. As an example, Hori Tomoyuki's team is pretty bad and pretty much carried by Starmie. It seems that many of the players just wanted the highest power attacks without much regard for the drawbacks. The most interesting part of all is that the winner, Hanamoto Norishige, had the only team to not follow this rule. It seems he valued consistency, unlike the others. There was still a ton of Hyper Beams flying around though, which in Stadium JP was fixed, I believe. Then again, how would they know the nerfs happened..? Turns out the Stadium JP Battle Engine was just imported from Gen 1 by Iwata in a week. Footage shows lack of Hyper Beam recharge among other bits and pieces.

A thing to keep in mind as well is that this is long before MissingNo. was discovered to make TM and Nugget cloning easier to streamline making teams. Chances are the players had to go with their one save file or have a spare Game Boy to trade stuff over. For example, grinding to S.S. Anne and getting TM08 for Body Slam and TM24 for Thunderbolt, trading a Pokemon over to the save, using them, and finally trading the Pokemon back to the competitive save. It was likely a very arduous task. Curiously, a lot of Pokemon were using Dig, which when lined up with how things were nerfed during development in Gen 2, could be why it was dropped from 100 base power.

On the website, the HP stats were specified, some of which had maxed out ones, such as Yamauchi Tomoyuki's Starmie having 103 HP. Given I do not know the exact stats (no ROM to poke through, nor does my tool have compatibility), I cannot replicate those specifically in Showdown right now. I am also not certain if they are actually what was on the team.

So as some background on the format itself, Nintendo Cup 1998 is a format that uses Pokemon only in Pokemon Stadium JP and was level capped at 30. It was essentially made to advertise the game, as 1997 did for Red and Green. It was heavily televised, with widespread representation on 64 Mario Stadium's televised games. Given some people recorded these games, you can find a few on YouTube. I have a playlist, in fact!

The format was pretty centralised around Exeggutor and Chansey, who stopped Jolteon from just rampaging in the format. Many teams would use Exeggutor, Chansey, Tauros, Starmie, and then one of the speedy electrics and someone else. While this wasn't always the case, it was pretty common. It's far from Gen 1 OU Lite though, as Dugtrio and Electrode were extremely popular, and OHKO and Evasion are a thing. This already warps the format significantly. Can't forget the Pokemon that were snapped, either. You'll see some pretty degen strats as a result.

So, let's get to the teams. Click the names to open up a Pokepaste.

Hori Tatsuya (ほりたつや)

I'm gonna be working on a Petit Cup spreadsheet soon, then possibly revisit NC98. I don't think the Exp sheet will be worth it, honestly.

Individual Movesets

If you’re angry because pokémon like Squirtle or Weedle weren’t included in the samples or if you want to build a team with a different combination, then you can use the following sets. Beelzemon 2003 built a set for each one of the 54 pokémon allowed, by the way, some pokémon have two sets, one that is only recommended for cartridge (labelled as Gen 1) and one that is only recommended for Pokémon Stadium 1 (labeled as Stadium 1).

Note: The pokémon are ordered by their Gen I Pokédex number.

Wait al Petit Cup battles are at all level 30?

If so, that means Koffing has a customizable moveset, since you can capture them right at level 30 in the Pokemon Mansion. No need for a rental.

No, they're 25-30, with a collective level limit of 80. It's not Nintendo Cup 1998, they're entirely different formats.

If you want to balance out your levels, Non-Rental Koffing forces you to run a 25-25-30 comp. This weakens other Pokemon and weakens learnsets for others, such as L27 Bulbasaur w/Razor Leaf which is super important. Rental Koffing takes away this issue but is extremely weak with a fixed moveset.

Since team preview is not enforced in battle simulators, we decided to use only level 30 pokémon, the highest level allowed in the original cup. Using level 30 pokémon makes easy to build teams and to enforce discipline during matches, also, it allows the qualifying pokémon to fight at their fullest.
