but overlooks that both versions do still say they'll be back
Satoshi: "Pigeot! Good luck!" Ash: "See you soon, Pidgeot!"
And then there's the last line. No, ladies and gentlemen, Satoshi doesn't actually promise to come back for his Pigeot in the Japanese version, that whole thing is just another in a long line of annoying 4Kids rewrites. But unfortunately the English dub is so ingrained in people's consciousness at this point in the show's history that I feel like we'll have to be explaining this 20 years from now.
presumably with the unstated intention to specifically see Pidgeot again.
サ トシ「用事を済ませたらすぐに帰ってくるから」 Satoshi: "We'll be back as soon as we finish our errand." Ash: "We'll be back as soon as we get Professor Oak's Poké Ball
extremely funny thatafter the talk about pidgeot never ever coming back bam
pidgeot is the final fan service of the series.
he aimed to elf master and got it
But previous companions did, in Journeys.Disappointing finale.
Pidgeot returning is nice, but I guess fueling Kanto nostalgia was more important than ensuring all the prior companies received some attention.
At least, Ash won the World Title.
*Shrugs* The thing is, I kind of expected Ash to continue his journeys. The thing about the title "Pokemon Master" is that its such a nebulous thing, there's no point where you can say you've "reached it" and questionable if its even possible. Sure, some characters such as the Champions have been called "Pokemon Masters"... but said characters have been defeated in battle. One can be a Pokemon Master yet still lose?
The only disappointing thing about the finale is the Rocket Trio. So in the end, they're still following Ash around. Ash is the World Champion and 99% of the time he'll likely have powerful Pokemon on him at his beck and call, but no they'll keep on trying to catch Pikachu for Giovanni. Ride together, die together, bad guys for life.Disappointing finale.
Wait, really? We're staying in Kanto? Come on GF, if you're going to start with new protags at least have them start out in the new region, especially if Liko is going to be offered the Paldean Starters.Liko is from Paldea, but attending a boarding school in Kanto. Roy is from Kanto.
The thing with Dawn I feel is that her arc throughout DP was very much conclusive by the end of the series and she had all of her character development in her own series itself, so she doesn't really have anywhere else to go as a character except to maybe become Top Coordinator, which isn't a conclusion they seem to be willing to give anyone (ie have them fully achieve their goal), barring Lillie due to the nature of her story. Like don't get me wrong, I would have loved if it turned out that Dawn did win a Grand Festival and became a Top Coordinator, but they don't want to do that because they want to portray just about everyone as constantly on a journey and still working towards their ultimate goals, and in Dawn's case, to become a Top Coordinator is her ultimate goal and to do so would mean her journey effectively would be completely concluded and over and she would have a reason to stop travelling completely because she would have nothing to work towards anymore. We saw Dawn, a lot, but probably she’s one of the more popular girls and to tie in with the heavy DP promo. I was a little disappointed they never gave her substance other than to spur on Chloe though.
Yeah, at this point Ash and the Rocket Trio have a relationship that has basically become an eternal frenemies for life relationship and nothing will ever change about that. The only disappointing thing about the finale is the Rocket Trio. Ash is the World Champion and 99% of the time he'll likely have powerful Pokemon on him at his beck and call, but no they'll keep on trying to catch Pikachu for Giovanni. Hm, like obviously I can't argue is that's what the anime writers are saying, but if feel "off".Yeah, at this point Ash and the Rocket Trio have a relationship that has basically become an eternal frenemies for life relationship and nothing will ever change about that.
At the same time, I don't think either of them actually want that relationship to change ever. In a recent interview, it was mentioned that ironically, Ash is grateful to have Jessie, James, and Meowth in his life. It is because of their repeated antics and attempts to capture Pikachu, and him fighting them off, that they have grown even closer together, and they have gotten as far as they have now in part because of the Rocket trio. And on the other hand, I think the trio themselves understand this, and so does Ash, and so that relationship is a very ironic two way frenemy one that both sides actually value. The Rocket trio have also shown in many ways that they do care about Ash and like him, and when Ash is in his big League tournaments they have always rooted for his victory. Especially in Ash vs Leon, where they were there in the stands, but they were also among the people highlighted, along with Ash's companions, Cynthia, and Diantha who were shown in a montage all worrying together for Pikachu when the latter was at its wit's end and altogether hoping for Pikachu to come through and prevail over Leon.
So that relationship is gonna stay as is. Frankly the Rocket trio themselves are not actually inherently evil despite their jobs and have their good side to them, which I think is why their relationship with Ash is so distinct and in a way is basically a frenemy style relationship, and both sides would consider it weird now if they weren't in each others' lives the way they are now.
You know I thought they forgot someone aside from Pidgeot. Oh well, it's not like Ash promised to see Primeape again, and it's with a trainer and his daughter who are likely treating it as family so its in a good place. As an aside, boy do the writers hate Ash's Primeape.
There was a Japanese commercial back in the day that showed all of the Pokemon species Ash has ever caught at that point(This was before Journeys). It included Raticate(Temporarily traded Butterfree for it), Beedrill(Gave it to Casey shortly after catching it), and Seaking(caught in the Seaking catching contest and handed it over when it ended), but NOT Haunter. It seems that as far as the writers as concerned, Ash never owned it(never was in a Pokeball or anything), it just followed him to help out with Sabrina. It was basically a shorter-term Jigglypuff in that it was a wild Pokemon that followed Ash and his friends. Also Haunter. Who just never gets acknowledged anywhere. I know he didn't actually catch it (like Primeape despite being around for fewer episodes) nor did he travel with it as long as Larvitar, but it was still a fairly pivotal Pokemon he traveled with. Suppose things would have been a little confusing with Gengar around these days anyway.
I agree, but Kanto anime nostalgia has led people to REALLY like Ash's Pidgeot because it left the team and people wondered if they'd ever bring it back. So its a cute bit of fanservice, I suppose. The real question is where the hell was Primeape's cameo? Is bro just gone traveling?I am the only one who feels that Pidgeot return was almost useless ? This pokemon was weak in battle, not very used except TR, no evolution until he left the series etc... ?
