While Gengar faces stiff competition as an offensive Ghost type from the likes of Dragpault and Aegislash, Gengar has access to Nasty Plot and a useful secondary Poison typing to differentiate itself from the competition. Gengar can find itself home on a multitude of teams, as it's a very versatile Pokemon with a solid move-pool. Nasty Plot enables Gengar to blast through it's checks and counters after a couple of boosts, and turns Gengar into a very threatening wall breaker. Shadow Ball is a solid STAB attack that hits the majority of the metagame for neutral coverage. Sludge Wave allows Gengar to easily check the majority of Fairy types in the tier, and enables Gengar to hit the entire OU metagame for at least neutral coverage with just it's STAB attacks. Sludge Bomb can certainly be considered, as the 30% chance to Poison the target can be beneficial in wearing down the enemy team. If Sludge Bomb is used, Hex could also be considered instead of Shadow Ball. Focus Blast is a powerful attack that can hit Gengar's common switch ins, such as Blissey and Tyrantiar for super effective damage. Substitute is certainly a viable option if you do not wish to rely on Focus Blast's low accuracy and PP, as Substitute can allow Gengar to Nasty Plot without the worry of being paralyzed or KOed.

While Gengar's base 110 speed is very good, it often finds itself forced out by faster threats, such as Zeraora or Dragapult. Priority attacks from the likes of Crawdaunt, Azumarill, and Aegislash can also scare away Gengar if not behind a Substitute. For this reason, bulky Pokemon such as Amoonguss and Mandibuzz can often be good teammates for Gengar. If you plan on using Gengar on a more offensively orientated team, Rillaboom can check Aqua Jet users, while also acting as a solid switch in to Zeraora. Grassy Terrain also weakens the move Earthquake, allowing Gengar to potentially live hits it otherwise couldn't. Dragapult and Aegislash often share similar checks to Gengar, making them good team mates to wear down their own switch ins, to open up an opportunity to sweep.
