Going to Baltimore, Maryland

I'm attending MICA ( Maryland Institute College of the Arts ) over the summer for development on my Portfolio, so I was wondering if theres anything about Baltimore that would be good knowledge before attending. ( Aside from the high crime rate. )

Hey Wallace, I went to JHU for undergrad so I may be able to help.

Some tips:
-Yeah the crime rate is a thing. Don't go into alleys, always walk with someone else at night. If MICA is anything like JHU, there's security out the ass on campus and a courtesy Escort Shuttle that you should definitely be using. Know the numbers to call.

-I pretty much only found the Inner Harbor area and the couple blocks within the college campus reliably safe enough to go to regularly, but the Inner Harbor is pretty nice. Make sure you don't miss Little Italy; one of my favorite places to go is Vaccaro's, a dedicated dessert restaurant. Get some crab at any of the places down there, go to the aquarium.

-It looks like you're close to Penn Station. Public transportation with the Charm City Circulator is actually pretty good, at least for getting down to the harbor and back (Purple Line). And it's free.

-There's an art museum over by JHU you might want to check out, I had a good enough time there. You can take the JHMI shuttle if you want to get up there from Penn Station.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but if you have any specific questions let me know.

What was the name of the Art museum?

hey congrats on getting into MICA! I'm from a little bit outside of Baltimore, but as someone who has lived in maryland my whole life, my biggest suggestion would be to take weekends and free time to make trips around the state. For being a pretty small state, there are still so many different cultures and areas.

For instance, there are tons of really good hikes all around the state with both the mountains to the west and the ocean to your right. You're also only about an hour away from DC if you are a really big city person.

Also expect some extreme state pride because we marylanders love our state (but especially our sick flag lol)

Thanks, but I haven’t been applied yet. I’m going for a college program for my Portfolio

knowing many friends at mica....the security there is complete garbdicks lol. Use the shuttle if u can. There was an incident only recently where a guy got his balls busted by a bunch of muggers literally on the steps of the security building / campus store. However within the dorms (which is where ull be if ur there for precollege--i loved precollege, hopefully ull love it too) u should be very safe.

ALSO: if ur going 2 precollege, u wont have much time outside of the classroom anyway LOL. they are kind of slave drivers over keeping u either in the res. hall or the studio, or at least they were when i was there. it was kind of ass

This makes me a little nervous. Do you have to pay anything for the shuttles?

'course not. Also if u find a buddy and travel in groups of 3 or more and don't go out at night (idk why u would even need to) u should be A-OK
