Golbat (QC 0/3)

[OVERVIEW]

  • Golbat's great defensive typing, decent defenses, and access to Eviolite allows Golbat to sit as one of the best Grass-, Bug-, and Fighting-type checks in the tier being a blanket check for the likes of Roserade, Golisopod, Machamp, and Virizion on both Balance and Bulky Offense teams.
  • Golbat has great utility options such as Taunt, Toxic, Defog, and Super Fang that allow it to beat more passive Pokemon that lack recovery such as Registeel and Bronzong while also being able to outspeed Bewear, Machamp, and Adamant Honchkrow with minimal investment.
  • Brave Bird and Toxic paired with Infiltrator can easily take on Pokemon behind Substitute or Screens.
  • Super Fang is able to take chunks out of Pokemon Golbat is unable to hit hard with Brave Bird or chip away at with Toxic such as Registeel.
  • Defog works well on Golbat as it forces out many Bug-, Fighting-, and Grass-type Pokemon, giving it free turns to remove hazards.
  • However, Golbat is pressured when Defogging as it is weak to hazards and is forced to Roost off damage it comes in on as well.
  • Golbat is also outclassed by other Deffogers such as Mandibuzz and Florges that offer more on Bulky Offense.
  • Golbat is also outclassed as a Bug-, Fighting-, and Grass-type resist by Noivern as it offers a lack of offensive pressure..

[SET]
name: Fat Bat
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Super Fang / Toxic
move 3: Roost
move 4: Defog
item: Eviolite
ability: Infiltrator
nature: Jolly
evs: 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Brave Bird is Golbat's only STAB attack and is necessary to allow it to take on the Fighting-, Grass-, and Bug-type Pokemon it checks.
  • Super Fang is used to take chunks out of Pokemon that resist Brave Bird such as Registeel.
  • Roost is used in order to increase Golbat's longevity in a match, letting it one vs one more opponents and also let it Defog more often in a match up.
  • Defog is used as Utility for the team in order to remove hazards.
  • Golbat can make use of Taunt and Toxic in order to stall out bulky Pokemon such as Milotic, Diancie, and Cresselia that it would usually not be able to beat.

Set Details
========

  • 16 Speed with a Jolly nature is important for outspeeding Pokemon such as Bewear and Honchkrow specifically whilst also outspeeding max Speed Machamp and other Pokemon below with speed investment below 70 base Speed.
  • The rest of its EVs are invested into Golbat's bulk to be as physically defensive as possible to take any hit a Fighting-, Grass-, or Bug-type Pokemon has to offer specifically.
  • Infiltrator is used to bypass Substitute and Screens making Golbat less set up fodder than without it.

Usage Tips
========

  • Golbat's resistance of Flying-, Bug-, and Grass-type attacks lets it come in safely versus most of these types in the tier so make use of this by bringing it in on Pokemon such as Golisopod and Roserade as much as possible.
  • However, Golbat does not appreciate it losing it's Eviolite so try not to get knocked off by these Pokemon too early in a match otherwise it will be pressured easier.
  • Golbat's weakness to Stealth Rock makes it harder to check Pokemon without it first Defogging, try to make optimal plays to get it in safely in order to Defog.
  • Golbat loses its Flying-type when it uses Roost so make sure when checking Pokemon you do not allow yourself to be hit by Earthquake when Roosting.
  • Watch out for coverage on Pokemon it resists such as Psychic-type moves on Fairy-type Pokemonlike Florges and Stone Edge / Ice Punch on Fighting-types.
  • Try to avoid status such as Burn and Paralysis as it can hinder Golbats ability to check certain Pokemon.

Team Options
========

  • Golbat resists Bug-, Fighting-, and Grass-type Pokemon and works well on Bulky Offense and Balance so pairing it with other Pokemon such as Slowbro, Registeel, or Gastrodon works well to as Golbat can cover their weakness.
  • Golbat appreciates Pokemon that can switch in on Psychic-, Rock-, Electric-, and Ice-type attacks so Pokemon such as Bronzong, Tangela, and Metagross can support Golbat very well.
  • Golbat will sometime struggle to be able to come in on attacks if hazards are up so Wish and Healing Wish passers such as Shaymin, Florges, and Vaporeon allow Golbat to come in on hazards and heal back safely.
  • Wallbreakers such as Machamp and Tyrantrum are welcomed by Golbat as they are able to take care of bulky Steel- and Water-type Pokemon that Golbat is unable to check or break through. They also dent holes in other bulky Pokemon such as Snorlax and Cresselia. They also appreciate defensive Pokemon being worn down by super fang.
  • Bulky Z-move users such as Cresselia, Bewear and Slowbro can switch in to Knock Off for Golbat relatively easy.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • U-turn is an option for Golbat as it allows for easier pivoting on checks such as Metagross and Necrozma. However, Golbat finds it very hard to give up utility moves in order to make use of this.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Residual Damage**: Residual damage from stuff like Stealth Rock is massively detrimental to Golbat despite being a Defogger as Golbat is weak to them and has to removal them itself in order to switch in safely in the future. Consistently switching into resisted hits and burn damage also adds up to pressuring Golbat.

**Super Effective Coverage**: Super effective damage such as Psychic-, Rock-, Electric-, and Ice-type moves threaten Golbat out. Common Pokemon in the tier such as Gardevoir, Tyrantrum, Raikou, and Mega Abomasnow. Coverage moves on Pokemon that Golbat can beat are also very threatening from Pokemon such as Bewear, Machamp, and Virizion.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Golbat struggles to beat most bulky Pokemon without Toxic or Taunt and bulky Pokemon with recovery can just sit on Golbat all day fishing for burns with Scald and wasting Roost PP. This includes Pokemon such as Articuno, Porygon2, and Slowbro.

Friendly AM Check. Implement whatever you think is good.

  • Golbat's good speed paired with minimal EVs and Jolly nature allows it to outspeed the likes of max speed Bewear, Machamp, as well as Adamant Honchkrow.
These last few points just feel like they're better suited to being move explanations. I would just say, "Golbat has great utility options such as Taunt, Toxic, Defog, and Super Fang that allow it to beat more passive Pokemon that lack recovery such as Registeel and Bronzong while also being able to outspeed Bewear, Machamp, and Adamant Honchkrow with minimal investment." and just move this as point #2.
  • However, Golbat is pressured when Defogging as it is weak to hazards and is forced to Roost off damage it comes in on as well.
  • Golbat is also outclassed by other Deffogers such as Mandibuzz and Florges that offer more on Bulky Offense. I would maybe add Sigilyph here too and give examples of how these Pokemon benefit bulky offense.
  • Golbat is also outclassed as a Bug-, Fighting-, and Grass-type resist by Noivern that is hugely in favour in the tier right now. This is just a personal opinion, but the phrase "right now" is going to date this analysis. I'm not saying Noivern is a bad Pokemon, but there always will be metagame shifts that happen in the future that could make Noivern fall out of favor. Also, explain to a new reader why Noivern is better than Golbat.

  • 248 HP and 244 Defense is used in order to be as physically defensive as possible to take any hit a Fighting-, Grass-, or Bug-type Pokemon has to offer specifically. It would read better if it beagn like "The rest of the EVs are invested in Gobat's bulk..." and finish with the rest.
  • Infiltrator is used to bypass Substitute and Screens making Golbat less set up fodder than without it.
Usage Tips
========

  • Golbat's resistance of Flying-, Bug-, and Grass-type attacks lets it come in safely versus most of these types in the tier so make use of this by bringing it in on these as much as possible. Give some examples of Pokemon it can safely come in against and force out.
  • However, Golbat does not appreciate it losing it's Eviolite so try not to get knocked off by these Pokemon too early in a match otherwise it will be pressured easier.

  • Watch out for coverage on Pokemon it resists such as Psychic-type moves on Fairy-type Pokemon and Stone Edge / Ice Punch on Fighting-types. The stuff about Fighting-types is right, but when is Gobat ever switching against Gardevoir?
  • Try to avoid status such as Burn and Paralysis as it can hinder Golbats ability to check certain Pokemon.

  • Golbat resists Bug-, Fighting-, and Grass-type Pokemon and works well on Bulky Offense and Balance so pairing it with other Pokemon such as Slowbro, Registeel, or Gastrodon works well to as Golbat can cover their weakness.

  • Golbat will sometime struggle to be able to come in on attacks if hazards are up so Wish passers such as Umbreon, Florges, and Vaporeon allow Golbat to come in on hazards and heal back safely. Umbreon sucks. I would rather replace it with a Healing Wish user like Shaymin.
Machamp and Tyrantrum also appreciate defensive Pokemon being worn down by Super Fang.
  • Add a bullet here for Pokemon that can switch into Knock Off for Golbat.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Golbat can make use of Taunt and Toxic in order to stall out bulky Pokemon such as Milotic, Diancie, and Cresselia that it would usually not be able to beat. I really feel like this is good enough to be on the moves section. But if it stays down here, then what are the downsides to using this set?
  • Mention U-turn. It's decent at pivoting but using this move means giving up another utility option.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Stealth Rock**: Stealth Rock is massively detrimental to Golbat despite being a Defogger as Golbat is weak to them and has to removal them itself in order to switch in safely in the future. I would just rephrase this as "Residual Damage", since Golbat also gets worn down by constantly switching into resisted hits and burns.

**Psychic-types**: Necrozma, Gardevoir, Espeon, and Cresselia are all Psychic-type Pokemon that can easily force out Golbat thanks to their super effective attacks.

**Rock-types**: Rock-type Pokemon such as Rhyperior, Aerodactyl, Tyrantrum, Barbaracle, and Lycanroc-Dusk are all example of Pokemon in the tier that can easily force out Golbat without having to fear anything from it.

**Electric-types**: Mega Ampharos and Raikou are also under the same bracket as most Psychic- and Rock-types in the tier where they have super effective damage capable of beating Golbat without needing to fear anything in return. Electric-type coverage on Pokemon like Goodra can also be hard to deal with.

**Ice-types**: Ice-type Pokemon such as Mega Abomasnow, Mega Glalie, and Vanilluxe are able to force out Golbat while not really needing to fear much. Mega Abomasnow should worry about Brave Bird. However, it still beats Golbat regardless. Ice-type coverage is also detrimental from Pokemon such as Mega Blastoise.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Golbat struggles to beat most bulky Pokemon without Toxic or Taunt and bulky Pokemon with recovery can just sit on Golbat all day fishing for burns with Scald and wasting Roost PP. Some of them don't like switching into Super Fang. Also, give examples of bulky Pokemon Golbat can't beat.

I would honestly just bunch most of the type weaknesses together as "Super Effective Coverage" since all of the Pokemon you mentioned always force Golbat out and don't care about anything outside of switching into Super Fang. Also, a lot of Pokemon Golbat can beat like Bewear, Machamp, and Virizion usually carry super effective coverage to stop Pokemon like Golbat from switching in against them.

Also, credits go here.

need to add somewhere that it's got so many good moves to choose from that it's hard to fit them all into one moveset. u cant have golbat beat passive mons while also defogging, it's hard (unless they're weak to toxic)

also mention that immunity to toxic is big
