Good Starters....

Alright, so i just recently started to get back into the metagame and I was wondering what are some good pokemon to start off with a the #1 Slot?
Before the D/P generation I was using HP Ice Zappy. Then I stopped playing. SO now I am way behind with all the new moves and pokemon. I heard Infernape was pretty noice and Swmapert is still good....

What most people use

Weavile
Swampert
Gyarados
Salamence
Inferape
Stuff with Focus sash
Anything that stop weavile aka szicor, heatran,

Don't forget Lucario, the best lead ever, yet one who is overlooked many a time. Also, Heracross can lead effectively, as well as Tyranitar for sand storm teams.

I've seen alot of Azelf's as starters. I'm guessing because they aren't effective by intimidate seeing how most of it's attacks are special, rather than physical.

How bout this gengar?

Gengar @ Focus Sash
*Hynosis
*Shadow Ball
*Focus Punch / Focus Blast / Counter
*Destiny Bond

Only works as a starter... Sleep. You can focus punch Blissey or counter a heavy hitter for a KO. Destiny Bond at 1 HP. If you are slower then the enemy (like weavile) Jus DB first, and they won't faint you so you can focus punch or hypnosis.

I was also thinking of just leading with something bulky that can just catch the enemy of guard or just has few good counters (hence, why Swampert is so good.)

I use Lucario just because of Weavile, and because I have a couple special attacks waiting for Staraptor and Salamence. I have to switch out on Gyara though.

I use Yanmega, and no Edux, Hypnosis is ownage. Stick a Wide Lens on that Yanmega and watch as your Hypnosis hits Gyarados leads almost all of the time.

Yup. Yanmega is indeed "hawt."

Azelf can be a real pain to deal with. Since Weavile outspeeds it, it can U-Turn out on turn one and live to tell the tale. It also likes to get stupid people to draw Blissey out, which is pretty perfect since Azelf packing Explosion pretty much means gg for Blissey around 75ish%.

Naive @ Life Orb
U-Turn
Psychic
Flamethrower
Explosion

Well, with my current team, I usually lead with Steelix.

Steelix @ Leftovers-Impish Nature
252 HP/252 SpD/6Atk
-Earthquake
-Rock Slide/Stone Edge
-Toxic
-Protect

Toxi-stalls. Poison their lead, Protect to scout attacks, rest of attacking moves to do a little sweeping when necessary. Rock-hard physical defenses lets it wall common starters like Weavile.

I also use Starmie at times for a lead, but the majority of people I battle on Wi-Fi lead with things that carry Pursuit, especially Weavile.

I've been leading with Crobat and so far he's my favorite lead ever.

Crobat @ Black Sludge
~ Hynosis
~ U-Turn
~ Aerial Ace
~ Confuse Ray

Sleep their lead, confuse them on the switch, U-Turn to a counter. Either that or you'll end up with a sleeping and confused Pokemon which has also worked well for me.

I also use a Wide Lens Yanmega lead. Protect first turn if you need to outspeed the opponent (obviously don't do this if you predict a switch), and if a counter comes out, put them to sleep with Hypnosis. Works pretty well IMO

Metagross counters every common leader but Gyarados and Salamence. And it can even Explode on those if you're desperate.
