* Shadow Tag, good bulk, and access to extremely helpful support moves provide Gothitelle loads of viability in VGC 2023 Series 1.
* Gothitelle can trap in foes against dangerous Pokemon such as Choice Band Meowscarada and Perish Song Azumarill, providing them with great support.
* Shadow Tag is helpful against teams that utilize constant switching such as weather teams with Pelipper or Tyranitar. It also prevents defensive switching such as Intimidate from Arcanine or Regenerator on Amoonguss, opening up Gothitelle's allies. However, one should be conscious of avoiding attempts to trap other Gothitelle or Ghost-types such as Gholdengo as they cannot be trapped.
* Gothitelle is a key component of Perish Trap teams which aim to win the game by KOing anywhere between 2 and all 4 Pokemon on the opposing end by using the combination of Perish Song and Shadow Tag. Azumarill is the most common Perish Song user paired with Gothitelle. However, this combination requires skill and full knowledge of the board state on every turn to execute and has a set of pre-defined answers. One of these is Gholdengo, which is not affected by Perish Song thanks to its Good as Gold and cannot be targeted by Gothitelle's Fake Out or trapped by it. Pivoting moves such as U-turn from Meowscarada are also difficult to play against while using Perish Trap.

* Helping Hand bypasses Gothitelle's lack of offensive presence and powers up powerful allies such as Dragon Dance Gyarados and Choice Band Meowscarada. Alternatively, Protect helps stall out Perish Song turns.
* Hypnosis diverts attention towards Gothitelle due to the fact that sleep can seriously slow down the pace of opposing teams, thereby achieving the same effect of ignoring the lack of offense from Gothitelle as that of Helping Hand. Heal Pulse is used alternatively to heal allies which are difficult to take down such as Skeledirge and Armarouge.
* Fake Out is indispensable on Gothitelle, denying a threatening Pokemon from getting a move off while also opening up an ally to take full advantage of the essentially wasted turn by the opponent thanks to the effective 2v1 position imposed.
* The Dark Tera type lets Gothitelle turn the tables on popular Pokemon such as Hydreigon, Gholdengo, and Meowscarada, allowing Gothitelle to resist their secondary STAB attacks and set Trick Room.
