[SET COMMENTS]

Magneton is able to remove bulky Steel-types in Metagross, Klefki, Registeel, Stakataka, and Steelix if played optimally, but it is entirely redundant outside of this very specific niche. The combination of Iron Defense and Rest allows Magneton to stall slow Steel-types out, and potentially PP stall them if necessary. Substitute prevents critical hits from Metagross, Stakataka, and Steelix. Charge Beam slowly overpowers the Steel-types not named Steelix, and allows it to pose a threat after it is done trapping. 144 Defense and an Eviolite prevent Metagross's Earthquake from breaking Magneton's Substitute at +6. 92 speed creeps Milotic and Metagross, and 20 evs are dumped into special attack. A Choice Scarf set can trap a weakened Cobalion and Durant, but it is very weak and slow otherwise.

Magneton fits on specific teams that take advantage of it removing the listed Steel-types but are still able to deal with the Steel-types that it is unable to trap, namely Cobalion, Durant, Lucario, and Doublade. As such, common partners to Magneton include Pokemon such as Dragon Dance Regidrago, Cloyster, and Alolan Ninetales that both appreciate the removal of Steel-types and have ways of circumventing the Steel-types that Magneton is helpless against. Because Magneton's niche is so narrow, other teammates generally support the starting core for the team; for example, Sharpedo or Flygon can chip Fairy-types for Dragon Dance Regidrago to sweep. Finally, although the Steel-types Magneton traps may set entry hazards while Magneton is setting up, these hazards can be freely cleared once Magneton removes the setter. Thus, hazard removal should focus on beating hazard setters that Magneton cannot trap; good examples include Starmie and Volcanion.
