VGC 21 Grimmsnarl

:ss/grimmsnarl:
[OVERVIEW]

With Prankster, dual screens, speed control, and a typing that's useful for staving off the likes of Yveltal and Calyrex-S, Grimmsnarl is one of the best support Pokemon in VGC 2022, fitting on a wide variety of teams. Dual screens and speed control are even more valuable in a format with Restricted Pokemon and Dynamax, as they simply have more influence and effect with the higher power level. Grimmsnarl sees play on various different compositions such as Zacian-C + Kyogre, Groudon + Zacian-C, and Groudon + Lunala teams. Grimmsnarl can also run a Trick set that debilitates foes by giving them Iron Ball or Lagging Tail and taking away a useful item like Life Orb or Weakness Policy. Grimmsnarl is destroyed by the format's most relevant Restricted Pokemon, Zacian-C, which makes checks to Zacian-C such as Incineroar, Zapdos, Groudon, and Landorus-T good teammates.

[SET]
name: Dual Screens
move 1: Spirit Break / Foul Play
move 2: Reflect
move 3: Light Screen
move 4: Scary Face / Thunder Wave
item: Light Clay
ability: Prankster
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 140 Def / 116 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

* Spirit Break is generally Grimmsnarl's best STAB option, as it hits Yveltal, Palkia, and the Urshifu formes super effectively, and it has utility in weakening special attackers. Foul Play takes Calyrex-S down to its Focus Sash, deals sizable damage to physical attackers like Groudon, Landorus-T, and Calyrex-I, and, unlike Spirit Break, it doesn't activate Thundurus's Defiant.

* Dual screens are especially great in a format with Dynamax and Restricted Pokemon, weakening the powerful attacks.

* Scary Face and Thunder Wave are both fantastic speed control options; the former allows Grimmsnarl to slow down Electric- and Ground-types like Landorus-T, Regieleki, and Zapdos, while the latter persists through switching, has a full paralysis chance, and affects Solgaleo.

* The given EV spread slightly optimizes Special Defense due to stat calculation quirks.

[SET]
name: Trick
move 1: Spirit Break / Foul Play
move 2: Trick
move 3: Reflect
move 4: Scary Face / Thunder Wave / Light Screen
item: Iron Ball / Lagging Tail
ability: Prankster
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 140 Def / 116 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

* Spirit Break gives Grimmsnarl super effective coverage against the likes of Yveltal, Palkia, and the Urshifu formes, and it has utility in weakening special attackers. Alternatively, Foul Play brings Calyrex-S down to Focus Sash, deals significant damage to powerful physical attackers like Groudon, Landorus-T, and Calyrex-I, and hits Thundurus without activating Defiant. Foul Play is especially common alongside Iron Ball, as it allows Grimmsnarl to revenge kill Calyrex-I while Trick Room is up.

* Trick takes away useful items like Zapdos's or Kyogre's Life Orb and saddles them with Iron Ball or Lagging Tail. Iron Ball immediately slows down targets and grounds Flying-types like Zapdos and Thundurus, allowing mainly Groudon to hit them with Ground-type attacks. Lagging Tail doesn't take effect until the turn after Trick, but it will make the target go last regardless of speed control options like Tailwind and Trick Room. Additionally, Trick plays around items that block Scary Face or Thunder Wave like Lum Berry on Charizard and White Herb on Landorus-T. Trick is especially good on teams weak to Thundurus, as it's immune to Thunder Wave and Scary Face triggers Defiant.

* Reflect gets the nod over Light Screen, as reducing the damage output of Behemoth Blade is most important for Dynamaxed Pokemon, it is useful versus plenty of other physical attackers like Thundurus, Rillaboom, and Groudon, and it can be complemented by Max Quake users such as Groudon, Landorus-T, Calyrex-I, and Venusaur.

* As Trick cannot affect Zacian-C and generally can only hamper one Pokemon, Grimmsnarl often runs another speed control option alongside it: Scary Face or Thunder Wave. The former affects Ground- and Electric-types like Regieleki, Zapdos, and Landorus-T, while the latter is permanent, can inflict full paralysis, and affects Solgaleo through Full Metal Body. If the team has sufficient speed control, Grimmsnarl can elect for Light Screen for the metagame's powerful special attackers like Kyogre, Palkia, and Yveltal.

* The given EV spread slightly optimizes Special Defense due to stat calculation quirks.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Babiri Berry allows Grimmsnarl to survive powerful Steel-type attacks like Zacian-C's Behemoth Blade with Reflect and Dialga's Max Steelspike. Safety Goggles allows Grimmsnarl to sit in the face of Amoonguss and Venusaur. Sucker Punch is an alternative STAB option to outpace and OHKO Calyrex-S, and it picks off weakened Pokemon. A maximum Attack and Speed Focus Sash set with Spirit Break or Sucker Punch, Scary Face or Thunder Wave, Fake Out, and Fake Tears is viable on hyper offense to support powerful special attackers like Dialga.

[OVERVIEW]

With prankster-boosted dual screens, speed control, and a typing that's useful for staving off the likes of Yveltal and Calyrex-S, Grimmsnarl is one of the best support Pokemon in VGC 2022, which is also able to fit on a wide variety of teams. Grimmsnarl's support options are valuable for just about any team, and as such its commonly used with many of the format's strongest threats such as Zacian-C, Landorus-T, Kyogre, and Palkia. Grimmsnarl is destroyed by the format's most pertinent Restricted Pokemon, Zacian-C, which makes checks to Zacian-C such as Incineroar, Zapdos, Rotom-H, Groudon, and Landorus-T great teammates. (touching the moves a bit wouldn't be bad, but good quality overall. I would also mention that it is quite passive and if it doesn't run the niche taunt many setuppers like SD Zacian and Lando-T may take advantage of that)

[SET COMMENTS]

* Spirit Break is generally Grimmsnarl's best STAB option, it hits Yveltal, Palkia, and the Urshifu forms super effectively, and has utility in weakening Special attackers.

* Dual Screens are especially great in a format with Dynamax, to mitigate the damage of many powerful Max Moves, and support your own Dynamax abusers beneficiaries. (may be cool adding the fact that you can even stall many dynamaxes alone while disrupting in the meantime, or put it in the overview)

* Thunder Wave and Scary Face are both invaluable speed control options, the former is permanent, has a paralysis chance, and affects Solgaleo, while the latter allows Grimmsnarl to slow down Electric- and Ground-types like Landorus-T, Regieleki, and Zapdos.

* The given EV spread hits a jump point in Special Defense; Specially Defensive is preferred for Special attackers like Yveltal, Palkia, and Calyrex-S.

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Foul Play can be used over Spirit Break to more effectively thwart Calyrex-S, and deal significant damage to Weakness Policy users, who may have already boosted, like Solgaleo, Calyrex-S, and Necrozma-DM, however this gives up Spirit Break's many benefits. Sucker Punch can be used to self activate Weakness Policy users like Solgaleo, Calyrex-I, and Necrozma-DM, and has additional utility in thwarting Calyrex-S, though this also gives up Spirit Break's benefits, and can be especially noteworthy considering Solgaleo's and Necrozma-DM's vulnerability to Yveltal. Babiri Berry lets Grimmsnarl survive powerful Steel-type attacks such as from Zacian-C and Solgaleo, but gives up Light Clay. Focus Sash is similarly useful to Babiri Berry, but trades off being able to potentially take a hit after Babiri has been activated, to survive strong attacks like Kyogre's Water Spout and Regieleki's Life Orb Max Lightning. Grimmsnarl can run a Trick set with Lagging Tail, which can cripple Pokemon and simultaneously remove useful items such as Solgaleo's Weakness Policy or Zapdos's Life Orb, and importantly unlike other speed control options it cannot be counteracted with other speed control, like Max Airstream, and Tailwind. On such a set Grimmsnarl should forgo dual screens for more utility, a secondary speed control option in Thunder Wave or Scary Face is important because Zacian-C is immune to Trick, and to have more flexibility, since Lagging Tail won't take affect until the turn after its been tricked. Grimmsnarl can run a wide array of utility moves to fill the last slot such as Fake Tears, Taunt, and Fake Out.

Foul Play takes Calyrex-S down to its Focus Sash, deals sizeable damage to physical attackers like Groudon, Landorus-T, and Calyrex-S Assuming Calyrex-S here is an accident, should be Calyrex-I, and unlike Spirit Break it doesn't activate Thundurus's.

* Spirit Break gives Grimmsnarl super effective coverage against the likes of Yveltal, Palkia, and the Urshifu forms, and has utility in weakening Special attackers. Alternatively, Foul Play brings Calyrex-S down to Focus Sash, deals significant damage to powerful physical attackers like Groudon, Landorus-T, and Calyrex-I, and gives Grimmsnarl means to hit Thundurus without activating Defiant, Would include here that Foul Play is more commonly used on the Iron Ball set than others because it can threaten a revenge kill on Calyrex-Ice while Trick Room is up.

* Trick takes away useful items like Zapdos's or Kyogre's Life Orb and cripples them with Iron Ball or Lagging Tail. Iron Ball immediately slows down Tricked targets and grounds Flying-types like Zapdos and Thundurus, allowing mainly Groudon to hit them with Ground-type attacks. Lagging Tail doesn't take affect until the turn after it was Tricked, but will make the Tricked target go last regardless of speed control like Tailwind and Trick Room. Additionally, Trick plays around items that might block its other speed control options; for example White Herb Landorus-T and Lum Berry Charizard have seen play as a way to neutralize Scary Face and Thunder Wave respectively. Trick especially helps out teams weak to Thundurus because it is immune to Thundurus and gains a Defiant boost off of Scary Face

* Reflect gets the nod over Light Screen as reducing the damage output of prominent physical attackers such as Zacian-C, Groudon, Rillaboom, and Defiant Thundurus is more important. Reducing damage from Behemoth Blade specifically is most important to your Dynamax attackers, and can be combined with common Max Quake users such as Groudon, Venusaur, Calyrex-I, Landorus, Gastrodon, etc

* As Trick cannot affect Zacian-C and generally can only cripple one Pokemon, Grimmsnarl often runs another speed control option alongside it; Scary Face or Thunder Wave. The former affects Ground- and Electric-types like Regieleki, Zapdos, and Landorus-T, while the latter is permanent, can inflict full paralysis, and affects Full Metal Body Solgaleo. If the team is sufficient with its speed control Grimmsnarl can elect Light Screen for the metagame's powerful special attackers like Kyogre, Palkia, and Yveltal.
