[OVERVIEW]

Growlithe carves out a small niche as a defensive Fire-type due to its respectable bulk, ability Intimidate, and access to Will-O-Wisp letting it check most physical attackers. Unfortunately, Growlithe is largely outclassed by Ponyta and Larvesta due to their more useful movepools and access to Flame Body to passively spread burns. Growlithe also has issues as a check to physical attackers, as Morning Sun's low PP can leave it overwhelmed by very strong attackers, and Growlithe is unable to effectively check Pawniard due to Intimidate activating Defiant. In addition, Flare Blitz and Wild Charge recoil quickly chips away at Growlithe's HP, and its weakness to Stealth Rock necessitates entry hazard removal support for Growlithe to perform its role over the course of a game.

Moves
========

Will-O-Wisp lets Growlithe cripple physical attackers like Vullaby and Mienfoo, allowing Growlithe to wall them more effectively and reducing their danger to the rest of Growlithe's team. Morning Sun's healing is necessary for Growlithe to continue checking threats. Flare Blitz is Growlithe's best damage dealing option and prevents Growlithe from being completely unable to threaten special attackers. Wild Charge and Hidden Power Grass are options to help Growlithe's coverage. Wild Charge allows Growlithe to damage Mareanie and Vullaby more than Flare Blitz, while Hidden Power Grass does significant damage to Onix and many other Rock-types.

Set Details
========

The given defensive EVs with an Impish nature and Eviolite let Growlithe usually avoid being 2HKOed by attacks like Magnemite's Thunderbolt and standard Mienfoo's High Jump Kick. 36 Speed EVs allow Growlithe to outspeed Timburr and burn Iron Fist sets. Intimidate is Growlithe's best ability by far, allowing it to weaken physical attackers every time it comes in.

Usage Tips
========

Growlithe should attempt to spread burns using Will-O-Wisp as much as possible to support its team and help its ability to switch in. Attempt to keep Stealth Rock off the field as much as possible, as Growlithe is significantly less effective when Stealth Rock is on the field due to its weakness to the entry hazard and only decent bulk. Otherwise, Growlithe should be used liberally to counter physical attackers like Mienfoo and Timburr early- and mid-game and spread burns among the enemy team. Growlithe can also check some special attacking threats like Spritzee and Snivy that can't defeat it, though in general Growlithe should avoid taking special attacks. Above all, it is essential to keep Growlithe's HP high using Morning Sun, as it can easily be weakened to the point that it can no longer check strong physical attackers.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that remove entry hazards such as Staryu, Vullaby, and Snivy help Growlithe's longevity immensely by removing Stealth Rock. Growlithe's issues with Water- and Rock-types make Snivy a particularly good partner, since it can defeat them for Growlithe. Mienfoo also makes a good teammate for Growlithe, as it can fight the problematic Onix, while Growlithe can take on Foongus and Spritzee for Mienfoo in return. Thanks to Growlithe's Intimidate and Will-O-Wisp support, Shell Smash users like Shellder and Clamperl and other setup sweepers such as Scraggy can set up more safely, making them good teammates for Growlithe.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Flame Charge or Agility can be used to outspeed most Diglett and defeat it, but they aren't particularly helpful outside of that, and Flame Charge requires either multiple uses or an EV spread that lowers Growlithe's defensive capabilities to outpace Diglett. Thief is an option to let Growlithe recover an item if its Eviolite is removed, but it provides little use otherwise, so Growlithe struggles to fit the move. Close Combat does heavy damage to Rock-types, but it is generally not worth using over Hidden Power Grass due to it reducing Growlithe's Defense and Special Defense after use. Flash Fire can be used instead of Intimidate to absorb Fire-type attacks, but it has no practical use, since Ponyta often runs High Horsepower. Growlithe can attempt to run an offensive set, but it loses most of the defensive utility Growlithe offers and is almost completely outclassed by Ponyta.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ground-types**: Ground-types such as Onix and Mudbray are able to take Flare Blitz and Wild Charge with ease and KO Growlithe in return with STAB Earthquake. Growlithe's Fire typing also leaves it vulnerable to being trapped by Diglett. However, Will-O-Wisp cripples most Ground-types, and Hidden Power Grass heavily damages Onix.

**Rock-types**: Rock-types like Onix and Tirtouga can handle Growlithe thanks to their good bulk and resistance to Flare Blitz and threaten it in return with their STAB attacks, along with setting up Stealth Rock to hinder Growlithe further. Much like with Ground-types, however, Will-O-Wisp and Hidden Power Grass can prevent them from switching in freely.

**Water-types**: Water-types such as Staryu and Mareanie are able to heavily damage or OHKO Growlithe and don't mind most of Growlithe's moves, though they do have to avoid Wild Charge.

**Ponyta**: Ponyta takes little damage from all of Growlithe's attacks and can threaten it out in return with High Horsepower.

I want to toss out the idea of HP Grass as the first slash, since Onix and Tirt are both pretty dominant and obviously take more from it. It also leaves you about as set up bait vs Shellder. I'll let you call the shot, or the next QCer, but it's appealing to me.

If you're gonna callout Onix as problematic, it's worth slipping in a Pawniard mention too since it also loses to Foo and is also an issue for the inferior fire dog.

thief is worth mentioning here, mostly for being hard to fit and only rlly providing a second evio instead of coverage. i would put it after flame charge.

I'm not too keen on sr having its own section for typical x2 weak pkmon, but the dog is kinda useless with them up for too long so that's fine.

QC: 2/3, write up and then go qc check deerling.

Going to leave Wild Charge as the first slash at least for now because most of the HP Grass targets don't like taking Wisp, but the Wild Charge targets (Staryu and Mareanie - esp marinara) are generally not crippled by a burn.

Talked about mentioning Pawn on discord (Pawn can't really switch into Growlithe, it's just that Growlithe can't check Pawn).

  • Nitpick but the very end implies that HP Grass is useful vs. all rock types which it isn't. I would either say "Onix and Tirtouga" or "Onix and many other Rock-types"

Set Details
========
  • In the first sentence, I'd specify that it "usually" lets Growlithe avoid the 2HKO from Magnemite's Thunderbolt (since by my calc Modest Magnemite, which is standard now, does have a .4% chance to 2HKO)
  • Also, I feel that "defensive Mienfoo" is kind of misleading since standard Mienfoo isn't typically considered a defensive Pokemon. Maybe say "most Mienfoo sets", "standard Mienfoo", or "non-scarf Mienfoo"

Usage Tips
========
  • "just good bulk" is a weird turn of phrase that took me a couple reads to understand. I would change it to avoid the chance of GP misinterpreting it.
  • When talking about Growlithe checking some special attackers, specify that in general you dont want it taking special attacks
