Ever since the beginning of GSC PU, Furret has been by far the most defining and dominant Pokemon in the entire tier. With its strong Double Edge 3HKOing a vast majority of the tier and excellent coverage in Surf, it’s the best offensive threat in the tier. The infamous CurseRestTalk Furret can easily ravage through teams when it’s checks are gone. Furret has an ton of options, Amnesia to prevent being beaten by Special Attackers, Hidden Power Grass to beat Omanyte and Corsola, and even being paired with Heal Bell Snubbull to let it use Surf over Sleep Talk, which is even tougher to stop. It requires very careful play in the teambuilder and on the battlefield, forcing awkward plays to scout it’s moveset. I’ve had many of my battles come down to Furret vs Furret wars. It puts quite a strain on teambuilding in my opinion, and even prepared teams struggle with it.

Now Furret is not totally unstoppable, it’s Special Bulk can be lacking against stronger special attackers such as Abra, and it can have 4MSS. Bulkier Pokemon such as Tangela can also somewhat check it well. Furret does have a few positive contributions to the metagame, however. It is effective at checking difficult to break through stall teams, and is one of the few Pokemon to effectively check Murkrow

But with all of this in mind, I ask the GSC PU community, Is Furret broken and should it be suspected?

(btw I’m currently not sure if its busted so I vote abstain or whatever)

To elaborate on if Furret should be suspected, I honestly can't decide. But if I really had to choose if Furret should be suspected and is broken, I'd probably go straight for a yes here. I 100% agree with you that it has the speed, power and the audacity to snowball through the entire metagame; it's like a situation where a Pokemon with insanely good coverage can destroy it's most reliable counters, and you're often forced to run something like a scarecrow to remove the crows off the field for example; being it's most reliable way to get rid of it. But in the Furret situation, would you have to run Hitmonchan like I stated with the scenario where the crows are a gigantic problem for a farmer? Yes, probably. But if it gets a curse or two off it's pretty much "good game".

In conclusion, I think it should be suspected.

I believe Furret Should Be at least Suspected
Why A Player May Say: I believe Furret like Any other Mon Has Checks, However those Checks aren't safe if the Set is Unexpected
For Example Magcargo is safe against RestTalkCurse Furret but Surf Furret beats it
Furret has to be Focused on While teambuilding and even then Preparing for Furret won't Gurantee A win due to its Coverage. Even the Hitmon Duo aren't Guranteed to beat Furret. That's Why I believe it should be Suspected

Serving a Subpoena? Mathematics and Its Role in Conducting a Fair Trial for Furret, Part 1

In an effort to remain impartial to Furret's fate in GSC PU, I took the time to compile a massive list of calculations that, in essence, simulates the impact of Furret versus every single Pokémon listed in the GSC PU Viability Rankings. My calculations consist of several things: Furret's Double-Edge damage versus things that it can hit, ranging from +0 to whatever amount of Curse boosts Furret requires to 2HKO or OHKO the opponent, Furret's alternative option(s) if Double-Edge lacks efficacy against a given foe, as well as each opponent's most common moves/most effective attacks versus Furret, from +0 to whatever amount of self-applied Curse/Swords Dance/Growth boosts (or Sun/Rain) required to give each Pokémon its best chance at threatening a 3HKO, 2HKO, or OHKO on Furret. I found that in order to deal relevant damage to Furret, many Pokémon in the tier require a niche move, like Hidden Power Fighting or Dynamic Punch, that they: do not standardly carry/cannot afford to fit/consider significantly suboptimal, to the extent that the move would be realistically used to hit only Furret.

It is terrifying when an opposing Furret enters the field, because its combination of potential coverage options, speed, bulk, and power means that effective counter-play requires knowledge of the particular set that it possesses. The most volatile aspect of Furret is not knowing which set it is running in a given situation. An incorrectly-guessed enemy Furret set often results in losing a Pokémon, and if the opposing team lacks a secondary Pokémon that can quell Furret's killing spree, it is likely that Furret will merrily mow down everything else. In my opinion, Furret's CurseTalk set is by far the most deadly. Rest allows Furret to instantly heal its status and HP, which, in conjunction with the utilitarian Sleep Talk, can quickly and easily snowball out of the opponent's control. Surf/Hidden Power Grass Furret variants destroy most bulky Normal-resists in one or two hits, making short work of would-be counters. While Pokémon with Haze are able to remove Furret's stat boosts, +0 STAB Double-Edge still heavily damages many Haze users, often threatening a 3HKO or better. Roar/Whirlwind can be useful, but the negative priority of phasing moves requires the phaser to survive a hit. This can be costly if the opposing Furret has a hybrid set, like Curse/Double-Edge/Surf/Rest, which aims to mislead the opponent, baiting in and eliminating troublesome phasers, such as Rhyhorn and Onix.

(It would have exceeded the 65,000-character limit for one post, so for damage calculations, please see Part 2.)

Should Furret be banned? I do value the ability of Furret to break and discourage stall builds. However, in terms of boosting, it vastly outpaces almost everything, requiring fewer boosts than most Pokémon need to mount a similarly significant offense on opposing Pokémon, while simultaneously bolstering its Defense, with little downside, other than Curse's Speed drops. Proposed counters to Furret can be swiftly defeated by its numerous coverage options. Upon careful consideration and many hours of poring over calculations, I believe that Furret should be suspect tested.

Excellent posts File 13, and huge thanks for taking the time to calc absolutely everything!

My view on Furret is still uncertain, so I am going to open a survey soon to ask the PU community on what to to, similar to what Earthworm did with the banning of Raichu in GSC NU

In the mean time, I’ll show some more intresting sets that have been seen recently

:gs/Furret:
Furret @ Leftovers
Ability: none
- Double-Edge
- Curse
- Amnesia
- Rest

Amnesia Furret has been seeing some success recently. I first saw it in the finals of the GSC PU tournament, and it pairs well with Curse. I like pairing Amnesia Furret with Snubbull, to cut down Rest turns

:gs/Murkrow:
Murkrow @ Leftovers
Ability: none
IVs: 14 HP / 24 Atk
- Curse
- Drill Peck
- Hidden Power [Ground]
- Return

An intresting way to use Murkrow is to use it as a Baton Pass recipient. When you use Curse with +2 Speed, Murkrow gains +1 Att, +1 Def, and +1 Speed, making it difficult to stop

:gs/Abra:
Abra @ Leftovers
Ability: none
- Psychic
- Substitute
- Ice Punch
- Thunder Wave

This is awful to play against, It can spread paralysis and fish for a full paralysis with Sub. Really nice against most defensive teams

sorry for double but this is important

Hello everyone! Its been a while since GSC PU was last discussed and actively played as a tier. I’ve been playing the tier quite a bit since then, but I would like to propose two potential tiering changes to this meta that I think would help it, and maybe give this tier some more activity.

:gs/Sneasel: :gs/Exeggcute: Free Sneasel and Exeggcute.
:gs/Hitmonchan: Ban Hitmonchan.

I’ll start with Sneasel and Exeggcute. These two Pokemon are NU Pokemon that don’t really get used in GSC NU(especially Sneasel), and I really don’t see them being broken in GSC PU. Sneasel is somewhat lacking both offensively and defensively, and would become the absolute fastest Pokemon in GSC PU. I could see it running Toxic sets with Moonlight, similar to what it runs when its used in GSC NU. Exeggcute I think wouldn’t be overwhelming at all and would be cool to have as well, its a Grass-type with STAB Psychic and Explosion. Its a very good check to Hitmonchan, but is eaten alive by Hitmonchan’s partner in crime Murkrow, and is not very powerful, while also being weak to Special attackers such as Seadra.

Speaking of Hitmonchan, I have already brought up the idea of a Hitmonchan earlier this year in the PU Old Gens Hub, and I still think this mon is ridiculous. Very few reliable switchins(and most of them get Pursuited pretty easily), checks a ridiculous amount of Pokemon, and often is forced to war itself, and Hitmonchan wars come down to speed ties and Sleep Talk pulls which I don’t think is healthy.

I really would like feedback on these changes, especially the Hitmonchan ban, as I feel GSC PU is not in the best state at the moment. Building feels very restrictive due to the nature of Furret and Hitmonchan and I feel the tier somewhat lacks in creativity and a lot of teams look very similar. I think a ban on Hitmonchan could open these things up, and Hitmontop would bea fine replacement for Hitmonchan thats quite a bit easier to answer due to lower attack+not having Body Slam.

:gs/Hitmonchan:
Hitmonchan has been banned from GSC PU!
I asked most of the GSC PU playerbase on the GSC community server, and after overwhelming support to ban Hitmonchan, I thought I’d make it official. The reasons why I outlined in my previous post and the PU Old Gens hub. Thus, the second member of the hitmon trio no longer inhabits GSC PU.

:gs/Sneasel:
Sneasel has dropped to GSC PU!
Sneasel was also freed, and is now allowed in GSC PU! I expect it to be a decent mon that will fit in nicely!

Some thoughts:
:gs/Hitmontop:
This mon will certainly rise up a huge amount. It virtually fills all the same defensive roles that Chan does, but is quite a bit less offensively threatening than it(Lower attack, can’t learn Body Slam)

:gs/Seadra: :gs/flaaffy: :gs/Elekid:
I expect special attackers such as these to rise up quite a bit as well. They all struggle against Hitmonchan and will like it being gone.

:gs/Furret:
Furret will likely remain the best Pokemon in the tier, as Hitmonchan going removes one of the mons decent at checking it.

I’m happy to see Hitmonchan go and I’m ready to see what the metagame looks like without it. The new metagame looks to be full of powerful special attackers that appreciate Hitmonchan being gone. The new metagame looks to be even more offensive than it is currently as a result. That being said, I think GSC PU will have one potentially problematic Pokemon without huge tiering changes(I.e Furret). I’d like to hear thoughts and see stuff about the new metagame.

Post-Hitmonchan Era Metagame Thoughts

After having the privilege of playing in Holly's GSC PU Tournament, which took place in the GSC Community Discord, I am pleased to say that I am enjoying the meta more than ever. Furret still commands respect, but it is neither unmanageable nor unfamiliar for modern team structures, which often feature more than one reliable answer to CurseTalk Furret. As predicted, Hitmontop fills Hitmonchan's shoes well, stomaching strong special attacks with ease. The tier's various special attackers feel relatively unfettered now that Hitmonchan's Body Slam paralysis is no longer a concern. As a result, special spam is undeniably potent. Overall, I believe that the meta is quite stable at the moment.

In response to Hitmonchan's departure from the tier, I propose the following GSC PU Viability Rankings shifts:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hitmontop :Hitmontop: B+ → S
With identical typing and special bulk, Hitmontop was the obvious shoo-in for his exiled brother Hitmonchan's job. In my opinion, Hitmontop has genuinely proven his worth as a Hitmonchan replacement and deserves a rank that accurately denotes his value in the tier. The variant consisting of High Jump Kick/Hidden Power Ghost/Rest/Sleep Talk is my favorite, by far. Hidden Power Ghost has a 19.7% chance to 2HKO opposing Drowzee, and guarantees the 2HKO on Gastly. It also deals decent chip damage to common High Jump Kick switch-ins, such as the 4x Fighting-resistant Venomoth.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elekid :Elekid: AA+
With only 65 Base Special Attack, Elekid does not hit nearly as hard as Seadra, Venomoth, and Murkrow. However, the combination of Elekid's nice Speed, coverage, and STAB Electric-type moves makes it capable of exerting ample offensive pressure, especially late game. These traits give Elekid a solid 1v1 matchup against a large portion of the tier. With Hidden Power Water, Elekid can guarantee the OHKO on Geodude, and score 2HKOs on Magcargo and Rhyhorn. Cross Chop OHKOs Sneasel, which otherwise beats Elekid 1v1, provided that Sneasel avoids Thunder/Thunderbolt paralysis.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sneasel :Sneasel: A+
With 115 Base Speed, Sneasel is the fastest Pokémon in GSC PU. Sneasel's stats and typing seem a bit contradictory, but it gets the job done offensively. Despite its frailty, Sneasel does have some defensive utility, such as switching into common attacks, like Psychic, Shadow Ball, and Hidden Power Dark, thanks to its Dark typing. Moonlight's 50% health recovery provides Sneasel with a significant increase in staying power. Although Sneasel has the second-highest Base Attack in the tier, both of its STABs hit on the special side. Despite having a pitiful Base 35 Special Attack, STAB Ice Beam should not be passed up, as it notably guarantees 2HKOs on Murkrow, Tangela, Rhyhorn, and Geodude. Shadow Ball, being a physical attack in Generation 2, OHKOs Abra, and 2HKOs Gastly and Drowzee. Dynamic Punch, particularly in conjunction with Toxic or Screech, can give Sneasel a fighting chance versus threats like CurseTalk Furret, but beware the unreliable 50% accuracy of Dynamic Punch. Dynamic Punch is also used to OHKO opposing Sneasel. Return/Frustration hits everything besides Rock- and Ghost-types for neutral damage. Steel-types are nonexistent in GSC PU, so they are not a consideration in this case.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Voltorb :Voltorb: A- A
With the second-highest Base Speed in GSC PU, Voltorb makes for an outstanding lead. Voltorb is capable of supporting its teammates with a plethora of useful moves, including Thunder Wave, Reflect, Light Screen, and Explosion. Notably, Thunder has an 87.2% chance to OHKO Delibird on a successful hit, granting favorable odds to deny Turn 1 Spikes from the opponent. Voltorb's combination of STAB Electric-type moves and high Speed makes it an effective revenge-killer of prominent threats, such as Seadra and Murkrow, for example. Access to a useful STAB typing + Explosion can often net Voltorb a 2-for-1, which is a characteristic that, in my opinion, places Voltorb marginally ahead of its current A- peers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Machoke :Machoke: A- B+
Although Machoke has slightly higher Base Attack and physical bulk than Hitmontop, Machoke's combination of low Speed and relatively poor special bulk leaves it significantly vulnerable to being revenge-killed by many of the tier's ubiquitous special attackers. In the current meta, Machoke's physical bulk simply has fewer practical applications than Hitmontop's special bulk.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for reading! :Chesto_Berry:

My apologies for the double post, I just really like this tier.

:gs/Delibird: :gs/Rhyhorn: :gs/Murkrow: :gs/Furret: :gs/Seadra: :gs/Elekid:
(Click the sprites above for the paste!)

Delibird @ Miracle Berry
Ability: No Ability
IVs: 22 HP / 26 Atk / 24 Def
- Spikes
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Rock]
- Toxic

Rhyhorn @ Leftovers
Ability: No Ability
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Roar
- Protect

Murkrow @ Miracle Berry
Ability: No Ability
- Hidden Power [Dark]
- Drill Peck
- Pursuit
- Haze

Furret @ Leftovers
Ability: No Ability
- Curse
- Double-Edge
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Seadra @ Mystic Water
Ability: No Ability
IVs: 14 HP / 28 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Electric]
- Agility

Elekid @ Miracle Berry
Ability: No Ability
- Thunder
- Ice Punch
- Psychic
- Cross Chop

I built this team with the purpose of utilizing Spikes to capitalize on Seadra's fearsome power and coverage.

:Delibird:
Tragically, Delibird is the only Spikes user in GSC PU. Although Delibird's mediocre stats and typing can be a bit of a hindrance, the value of Spikes in the tier is pretty high. However, it is not uncommon to encounter teams that lack Rapid Spin. Hidden Power Rock is used mainly to hit opposing Delibird, but it also hits Magcargo and Venomoth for super-effective damage, should the need arise.

:Rhyhorn:
Rhyhorn is the team's Normal-resistant phaser, easily Roaring away the tier's most deadly boosting threat, CurseTalk Furret. With its immunity to Electric moves and its ability to switch into Explosion, Rhyhorn is arguably the best Voltorb answer in the tier. Rhyhorn's nice Base 85 Attack makes dual-STAB Rock Slide + Earthquake particularly potent. Protect is a useful move on Rhyhorn for a multitude of reasons: it gives Rhyhorn a method of safely gaining Leftovers recovery, scouting for treacherous movesets (especially Surf Furret, Hidden Power Water Elekid, and Hidden Power Grass Murkrow), wasting the opponent's low PP moves (namely Giga Drain and Hydro Pump), and racking up passive damage from Delibird's Toxic. Rhyhorn pairs well with Delibird, as Rhyhorn can switch into Fire-, Rock-, and Electric-type moves, while Delibird can switch into Earthquake, and if its Miracle Berry is intact, it can switch into Grass-types like Tangela without even fearing status. Additionally, Rhyhorn's Roar works wonders at wearing down the opponent in tandem with Delibird's Spikes.

:Murkrow:
Murkrow is used primarily to remove Gastly, Venomoth, and troublesome Psychic-types, such as Abra, Drowzee, and Slowpoke. Haze neutralizes boosting threats that can otherwise snowball uncontrollably, like Belly Drum Poliwhirl. Miracle Berry drastically improves Murkrow's matchups versus the tier's numerous status inflictors, which are almost all troubled by Murkrow.

:Furret:
Although Furret can wield some interesting coverage options, I find the traditional CurseTalk variant to be its most powerful and consistent set. STAB Double-Edge even hits hard unboosted, so it can be used to apply immediate offensive pressure.

:Seadra:
Thanks to Roar + Haze support from Rhyhorn and Murkrow, respectively, Seadra can reasonably drop Haze in favor of Agility. At +2 Speed, Seadra outpaces the entire unboosted metagame, enabling it to take full advantage of its great Base 95 Special Attack. Mystic Water is used to enhance the power of Seadra's Hydro Pump, which notably has a 25.6% chance to OHKO Abra, 2HKOs Furret and Venomoth, has a 97.2% chance to 2HKO Drowzee, a 45.3% chance to 2HKO max-DV Hitmontop, and a 72.2% chance to 2HKO Hidden Power Ghost/Rock Hitmontop, all of which are made possible by Spikes.

:Elekid:
With exceptional coverage moves and high Speed, Elekid is efficient at picking off weakened foes late game. Thunder is preferred over Thunderbolt for its ability to OHKO Seadra on a successful hit. Although Leftovers may seem helpful, I find that Elekid's frailty and vulnerability to status practically mandates the use of a Miracle Berry instead. Ice Punch makes it tough for opposing Grass- and Ground-types to switch into Elekid. Cross Chop is used to OHKO Sneasel, while Psychic hits targets like Hitmontop and Venomoth for nearly as much damage as STAB Thunder in the event that risking a Thunder miss is not an option.

Feel free to adjust the team to suit your personal taste!

Enjoy! :Mystic Water:

Sneasel can Counter too

:gs/Onix:
I believe you may have forgotten that Onix can Roar just as well as Rhyhorn and sports a speedy Explosion as bonus (it also learns Sandstorm which in theory could help put things into boom range)! :blobwizard:

:gs/Wooper:
Under the "Belly Drum" section you could probably include Wooper as well cause a stab Earthquake coming from +6 attack is definitely gonna leave a dent on anything that isn't a flying type, lol

:gs/Kabuto:
Kabuto & Tyrogue are some other ones that could conceivably be mentioned under "Rapid Spin" just from the sheer rarity of that move alone but that's your call... x)

:gs/Onix:

Thank you for your replies, Blaine500. I had forgotten to include Onix in those sections. It's there now. While Onix's physical bulk is slightly higher than Rhyhorn's, Onix is largely overshadowed by Rhyhorn as a Ground/Rock phaser, as Rhyhorn has significantly better special bulk and a much more threatening Attack stat. As for Explosion, Onix is overshadowed there, too. Both Gastly and Voltorb sport a faster Explosion, while Geodude's Explosion hits much harder than Onix's. Onix's unique advantages in PU are having slightly higher physical bulk than Rhyhorn, access to the fastest Sandstorm (which as a style is extremely fringe, at best), and the ability to boost its Attack using Sharpen (without sacrificing Speed the way Curse would).

:gs/Wooper:

Although I find Wooper adorable, it is heavily outclassed by the other Belly Drummers in PU. Despite having STAB, Wooper's Earthquake doesn't even hit as hard as Poliwhirl's non-STAB Earthquake. Wooper is not realistically going to force switches (which would grant a safe setup opportunity), but even if it did, it would be incredibly easy to revenge-kill it based on its immense frailty and Base 15 Speed (not to mention the fact that it would cost 50% of its HP to boost in the first place). Additionally, Poliwhirl's access to Lovely Kiss sets it even farther ahead of Wooper in terms of viability as a Belly Drummer.

:gs/Kabuto:

Kabuto is heavily outclassed by Staryu as a Rapid Spinner due to Staryu's good Speed, coverage, and access to 32-PP Recover, while Tyrogue is heavily outclassed via Base Stat Total by its evolution, Hitmontop. Neither Kabuto nor Tyrogue are worth using in PU as a Rapid Spinner.

Edit: Crossed out misinformation.

Well yes. While Onix's raw Sp. def stat is technically higher it's Rhyhorn's higher HP stat that comes into play to cushion those special hits, which is what leads to a difference of about 10.9%-12.9% in overall special bulk.

It should be said that not having to actually take said hit because you outspeed is a lot better than potentially being able to endure it, however, phazing does force you to go last anyways so this detail is context specific. I do think that both of em could make good use of Light Screen support to help with that side of things.

:gs/Furret: VS :gs/Onix: & :gs/Rhyhorn:
Furret Surf vs. Onix: 275-324 (100.7 - 118.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Furret Surf vs. Rhyhorn: 326-384 (89.8 - 105.7%) -- 35.9% chance to OHKO

It is noteworthy that after only one Sharpen that Onix does end up hitting harder than Rhyhorn and sometimes you really just need that speedy raw power in that one turn to get rid of a threat which is what Explosion provides.

:gs/Rhyhorn: VS :gs/Furret:
Rhyhorn Earthquake vs. Furret: 130-153 (34.8 - 41%) -- 66% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

:gs/Onix: VS :gs/Furret:
+1 Onix Earthquake vs. Furret: 136-160 (36.4 - 42.8%) -- 97.8% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
Onix Explosion vs. Furret: 298-351 (79.8 - 94.1%) -- 46.2% chance to OHKO after Spikes

With that said, Rhyhorn's higher immediate attack power without the need to sacrifice it self or set up isn't a trait to be underestimated either. Rhyhorn also gets access to high base power special attacks such as Fire Blast or Thunder if it really wants to catch things off guard on switchs, which Onix can't compete with since it gets nothing of the sort outside of Hidden Power.

"As for Explosion, Onix is overshadowed there, too. Both Gastly and Voltorb sport a faster Explosion, while Geodude's Explosion hits much harder than Onix's. Onix's unique advantages in PU are having slightly higher physical bulk than Rhyhorn, access to the fastest Sandstorm (which as a style is extremely fringe, at best), and the ability to boost its Attack using Sharpen (without sacrificing Speed the way Curse would)." - File 13

:gs/Gastly: :gs/voltorb: :gs/geodude: :gs/Onix:

It is true that Gastly and Voltorb technically have speedier booms, however, Onix has more attack backing up said boom (even without a boost) and can power it up even further with Sharpen while the previous two aren't in a practical position to do so.

While Geodude's boom hits harder immediately it juggles Spin priorities in its moveset. Any turn that Geodude takes to spin successfully is a turn that Onix can boost on, which results in a more powerful boom. There's also the whole concern of actually getting the chance to boom given that Geodude's speed is down at base 20 while Onix is well over x3 times faster than that. In essence, what stands out here is that Rhyhorn can phaze but can't boom while Geodude can boom but can't phaze. Onix compresses these two roles into one mon while being decently speedy as well, which is a legitimate enough niche in the meta for it to see good useage.

As for Sandstorm, it should be noted that GSC sand is special. In Gen 2 Sandstorm does 1/8th of your hp every turn instead of 1/16th like in the later gens. So when you combine that with spikes and a fast boomer that can spring into action the second that the opponent has been put into range you've got an interesting proposition on your hands.

:gs/Geodude: VS :gs/Furret:
Geodude Explosion vs. Furret: 410-482 (109.9 - 129.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

:Gs/Onix: VS :gs/Furret:
+1 Onix Explosion vs. Furret: 448-527 (120.1 - 141.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Wooper would obviously heavily rely on its teammates to spread paralysis onto the opponents team in order to make speed a lesser issue cause as you've pointed out 15 base speed is terrible. Its resistance to rock and immunity to electric are noteworthy traits that could give it easy switch ins for the match and that make it different from Poliwhirl.

I do have to respectfully correct you on something. Even tho Poliwhirls higher base attack stat than Wooper's would lead one to rightfully believe that it would hit harder the damage formula actually takes same type attack bonus (stab) in higher priority than sheer attack stat alone. Which means that Wooper's +6 Earthquake actually does land harder than Poliwhirl's +6 Earthquake. But I do agree that Poliwhirl's access to Lovely Kiss & 90 base speed do give it an easier time getting set up to drum and ultimately sweep.

:gs/wooper: VS :gs/Furret:
+6 Wooper Earthquake vs. Furret: 362-426 (97 - 114.2%) -- 82.1% chance to OHKO

:gs/poliwhirl: VS :gs/Furret:
+6 Poliwhirl Earthquake vs. Furret: 292-344 (78.2 - 92.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

:gs/Kabuto:

I think Kabuto's higher speed than Geodude and neutrality to water as well as having stab surf it self might give it a lot of oppurtunities to spin successfully. Its resistance to normal type moves is also something it could exploit along with it's good 80 base attack. Overall, I think there's a lot of untapped potential laying there dorment with the Dome Fossil just waiting for you in a cave somewhere next to a Super Nerd. As for Tyrouge, I honestly just wanted to say that it has the exist, lol. Hitmontop is in every way a better choice... xD

Thank you for the correction. I foolishly miscalculated the Wooper Earthquake damage in relation to the Poliwhirl Earthquake damage in my haste. I apologize for the misinformation there. I have gone ahead and crossed out that sentence in my post.

I'm glad that you seem so passionate about the tier! We'd love to have you participate in the GSC PU tour(s) later this year in the GSC Discord if you're interested!

GSC Homefield Advantage Tour afterthoughts plus my exploration on Sneasel Lead

Intro: It's my 1st time posting in this thread since I also just learned about GSC PU just when I subbed in the recently concluded GSC Homefield Advantage tour. I chose PU as homefield since the first tier I ever played in Pokémon Showdown is Gen8 PU (and yeah I'm pretty new to this. I am still not one year from playing Pokémon Showdown at this point). But then I guess I got lucky and picked a tier that seems interesting.

Here's the link of the tour: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threa...ament-from-ubers-to-zu-won-by-mr-378.3702199/

Enough of my intro and I'll begin with my afterthoughts of the tour. First, most used sample teams (teams that can be found in this thread or from the redirected site from RoA chatroom in PS! though some still has Hitmonchan in it). That means I got not that much info to learn more about the tier and thus tried to find someone to play with in the GSC Discord. And I played with some and luckily I was able to join one of the GSC PU roomtours in the RoA chat. More of that later.

Second, GSC PU is an inactive tier. I don't know why but yeah I am hoping that this tier would be a bit more active since it seems the Post-Hitmonchan ban and Sneasel unban metagame is still not that explored.

And lastly, I hope I can learn more about the tier and maybe start making this tier active by posting. So, now I'll provide calcs for Sneasel vs the common leads based on that GSC Homefield Advantage tour plus some leads that I also encountered.

Vs. Elekid

Sneasel Return vs. Elekid: 123-145 (41.9 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Elekid Cross Chop vs. Sneasel: 313-368 (100 - 117.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Vs. Furret

Sneasel Return vs. Furret: 95-112 (25.4 - 30%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Furret Double-Edge vs. Sneasel: 156-184 (49.8 - 58.7%) -- 99.9% chance to 2HKO -- (10.4 - 12.3% recoil damage)

Against Elekid, maybe switch into its check like Sunflora. Against Furret, switch into something like Magcargo.

Vs. Venomoth

Sneasel Return vs. Venomoth: 98-116 (28.5 - 33.8%) -- 98.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Venomoth Sludge Bomb vs. Sneasel: 107-126 (34.1 - 40.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Vs. Voltorb

Sneasel Return vs. Voltorb: 108-127 (38.1 - 44.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Voltorb Explosion vs. Sneasel: 273-321 (87.2 - 102.5%) -- 17.9% chance to OHKO

You can stay Turn One in them and click return to see if they will inflict status and sneasel can absorb it. Then, next turn, against Venomoth, switch into something like Magcargo or Murkrow. Against Voltorb, expect Explosion or another Thunder wave.

Vs. Aipom

Sneasel Return vs. Aipom: 102-120 (32.5 - 38.3%) -- 2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Aipom Return vs. Sneasel: 127-150 (40.5 - 47.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Vs. Seadra

Sneasel Return vs. Seadra: 74-87 (23.6 - 27.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

Seadra Surf vs. Sneasel: 119-141 (38 - 45%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Aipom is normally going to agility then baton pass. Seadra can either set up a Sub or Rain or attack. Sneasel can also stay on turn one to see what they will do. Then switch to the likes of Sunflora or Drowzee to check Seadra and for Aipom, maybe still click Return.

Vs. Delibird

Sneasel Return vs. Delibird: 118-139 (41.4 - 48.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Delibird Hidden Power Rock vs. Sneasel: 100-118 (31.9 - 37.6%) -- 93% chance to 3HKO

Vs. Nidorina

Sneasel Return vs. Nidorina: 91-108 (26.5 - 31.4%) -- 22% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Nidorina Hidden Power Fighting vs. Sneasel: 214-252 (68.3 - 80.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Vs. Murkrow

Sneasel Ice Beam vs. Murkrow: 190-224 (58.8 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Murkrow Drill Peck vs. Sneasel: 112-132 (35.7 - 42.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

You can stay turn one against these three. Delibird will probably use Spike. Murkrow will attack or switch. Nidorina can use Thief. Click Return and then decide on what to do next.

Here is a Sample Team I built:

:gs/sneasel: :gs/magcargo: :gs/sunflora: :gs/venomoth: :gs/seadra: :gs/elekid:

https://pokepast.es/cea161921f69a465

Description: Sneasel lead to absorb common status from Voltorb's twave or Venomoth's stun spore/sleep powder thus the miracle berry item. Then there's thief instead of moonlight to steal leftovers against bulky mons. Magcargo and Sunflora are the defensive backbone. Seadra has haze since I don't have a slot for Murkrow anymore coz I think Venomoth is needed to counter the likes of Hitmontop and inflict sleep status too. Elekid is there to revenge kill especially against a potential opposing Poliwhirl.

Weather teams

Sorry for double post. It's been more than a week since my previous post anyways. Here I am again to share some teams that I formed and this time, it's weather teams.

SandSpike:
:gs/delibird: :gs/rhyhorn: :gs/corsola: :gs/magcargo: :gs/venomoth: :gs/machoke:
https://pokepast.es/87db79f21060771b

This is a combination of spike and sandstorm to chip off more damage and worn down opposing team over time. Delibird is the only spike user and paired up with Corsola as the Sandstorm setter. Corsola can set against the likes of Magcargo, Seaking, etc. (in short, on mons it can wall). Rhyhorn will be the offensive Rock type especially to fight against Venomoth with the help of Light Screen support from Machoke. Venomoth is here as a Seadra check and Magcargo is here too since it is a Rock type and a defensive behemoth.

Sun team:
:gs/aipom: :gs/charmeleon: :gs/ponyta: :gs/clefairy: :gs/corsola:
https://pokepast.es/a9e02d64a86c3b5a

Similar with what holly shared here already but I modified it since I think there is a need for a Hidden Power Ground user against Magcargo. I also tried having SunnyBeam Togetic which seems work well as a Seadra check. Togetic can run HP Water against Magcargo along with Fire Blast, Solar Beam, and Sunny Day. Clefairy can also Twave to control Seadra. I also think Fire types rise in terms of viability because of Sneasel.

Rain:
:gs/elekid: :gs/seadra: :gs/murkrow: :gs/flaaffy: :gs/venomoth: :gs/hitmontop:
https://pokepast.es/ca461d0bfc90e3d5

Elekid and Seadra both has Rain Dance. This team is filled with threats like Flaaffy and Hitmontop. Murkrow will be the Haze user. Venomoth is another back-up against possible opposing Seadra. This team is built with the top threats in mind like Seadra, Venomoth (Thus murkrow is here), Thunder users (thus hitmontop is here and Flaaffy can be a secondary check too), and Sp Atk threats (thus Elekid has Light Screen). Grass types will also have a hard time trying to counter Sub Seadra and this team has Murkrow and Venomoth. About Furret, just overwhelm it with Special moves and Hitmontop is here too in case it has no curse set-up or rely on a HJK crit.

Thanks again for reading my post and see ya!

(Now 3 of the last posts here are mine so mb xD)

Now that the GSC PU Open I tour is over and I'm not playing for gsc slam playoffs anyways, I decided to post outright and maybe this gives an idea for those players to help develop this metagame more. I just luckily got to the finals and I'll give some insights about my run in that tour a bit later in this post. For now, lemme start with my personal vr and talk about some metagame trends or shifts that I observed.

VR

I won't talk about the mons one by one...That would be for a separate post when I gather more data to help me decide the order within subtiers too. For now, here's some of the things I want to talk about Post GSC PU Open I.

:Delibird:

Delibird is only like less than a third of the teams. Being the only legal mon with Spikes in the tier, Delibird is seen usage despite its meh potential outside of that. It usually needs to come in from doubles becoz of its 45/45/45 bulk and bad defensive typing. That's also why it often is used as a lead instead which is actually the 2nd most used lead next to Elekid in this tour. Ice beam with 65spatk stat isn't that bad but it's only super effective to grass, ground, and flying but those mon can just switch out and let something like Seadra in while taking minimal damage. So despite Spikes being nice, it's like playing 5v6 some time imo. I had this game vs vani in the finals which is the only game I faced Delibird in this tour iirc and I won that. I counted the number of time Spikes proc and it only procs 9 times. As a lead though, it prevented my Cubone lead that is intended vs the common electric leads but it is what it is.

Venomoth being just 10th in usage surprised me. It is literally the best hitmontop counter in the tier. It is also one of the best lead, if not the best. It is the 4th most used lead behind Furret but back Venomoth also has a potential. The Curse set is unexplored in this tour and it makes Venomoth a threatening sweeper too. It can also equip itself with HP water for Magcargo. It has base 90 spatk and speed. That speed is tied with Furret and Poliwhirl.

Baton pass teams also wasn't used much in this tour. Aipom was only used thrice and lost all games while Eevee won one out of two. That eevee win came from this game of soup vs Lpz in the semis. Cubone also didn't get much usage despite it being very dangerous when passed with speed and then it can SD to sweep. Another set-up mon in Poliwhirl also didn't receive much usage despite Belly Drum being so threatening while it can use Lovely kiss on incoming checks plus it learns earthquake to KO electrics. This gameshows how Poliwhirl can turn the tides of a game.

Speaking of turning the tides, Corsola is used more than Omanyte because of its access to Recover. Both are great Furret checks because they don't take much from Surf unlike Magcargo and Rhyhorn. We all know a surprise Surf from Furret can really turn the tide of the game or give a huge advantage. This gameshows how a Furret already revealing Double edge and curse doesnt mean its a mono furret becoz surprise! I forgot Surf so it weakened my Rhyhorn that eventually became useless. Hitting Surf to the likes of Magcargo is so useful too since Magcargo checks a lot of other mons too like Murkrow and Venomoth.

Magcargo also 4x resists Fire which is a typing that was also underutilized in this tier imo. We have Ponyta, also speed ties with the likes of Furret and has access to Hypnosis. A solid lead that can ohko Delibird and also scares Venomoth. It is also kinda scary to switch into if you don't know its hidden power type. Sun team was used twice in the tour although both lost iirc.

Maybe I'll talk some other mons more specifically in other post but for now, that's it for my metagame observation in this tour. Now onto the lead metagame.

Elekid
had almost 60% win rate as a lead! It was a lead in 32 teams and that win rate is higher than like 15% compared to the non-lead Elekid teams. Many of lead Elekid uses the move Thief and that move has a win rate of 71.43% in 21 usage. It has great coverage and can counter many leads. It can thief Venomoth's miracle berry and use Psychic in lead match-up. Thunder scares Delibird. Furret can be cheesed with Cross Chop. And of course, discourages Seadra lead that can dictate the game. Just some short note about Seadra that is has base 95 spatk and like even Hitmontop w/great spdef can only switch once and needs to heal off some HP as a below70% Hitmontop might not be able to check Seadra next time coz Seadra is also faster. Spikes works great with Seadra too and there's the Mystic Water item and even Hydro pump that can surprise some too.

Going back to other popular leads, I already mentioned Cubone as a counter-lead to Elekid but is also scared off by possible Delibird lead. Delibird is the 2nd most used lead and something like Sneasel lead equips itself with HP rock to OHKO it. Delibird also has HP rock to deal with common Venomoth leads. This lead metagame is fun because of those complicated rock-paper-scissors-like characteristics of the mons.

Furret lead is also popular so that opponent will reveal early their normal resist and thus, helps like Back Mono Noctowl and Return curse Seaking to sweep later. Thus, this tour also showed some Hitmontop leads as Hitmontop is decent versus Elekid and Seadra leads too.

Voltorb lead also had 9 usage. It can set-up screens for Baton pass or just for set-up mons like Growth Tangela. Spreading twave also works. Flaaffy also receive some lead usage as it counters Elekid and can set-up screens and spread paralysis too. Voltorb though has boom so that's nice for momentum too and Voltorb can be saved for late game to counter a possible back Poliwhirl since unlike Flaaffy, Voltorb is faster than Poliwhirl.

An underrated lead here is Ponyta. Ponyta can OHKO Delibird and scares Venomoth as I've already mentioned and can click Hypnosis vs Elekid where Elekid doesn't usually has Miracle Berry or uses Rest. HP Ground Ponyta is also viable becoz Ponyta has base 85 atk.

Now moving on to common structures/team cores.

Spikes + an abuser
which is usually Seadra or Hitmontop

Delibird can set-up spikes and it can usually put most mons in range for 3hko. Seadra with Surf Ice Beam and HP electric is great coverage. Hitmontop even with just HJK is threatening and can force switches too. Abra also kinda benefits from this despite Murkrow being immune to Spikes since Abra can click Twave or Thunder punch vs Murkrow and it being gone means Abra has more opportunities to put opposing mons into 2hko range of Psychic.

:Magcargo: :Sunflora:

Magcargo + Sunflora defensive core

Magcargo
is the blanket physical check while Sunflora is the blanket special check. Magcargo can come in vs Murkrow and Venomoth that can threaten Sunflora while Sunflora can scare Seadra with Razor Leaf and come in on its Surf. The Ice Beam Seadra set can be switch in by other mons like Hitmontop or even just pressure it offensively with Elekid/Voltorb. Overall, this is a nice defensive core to start a team with. This 2mon combo was used 10 times this tour.

:Corsola: :Drowzee:

Corsola + Drowzee

Another defensive core is this two. Corsola will be the Murkrow check that scares Drowzee plus Drowzee can twave Murkrow. Paralyzing Murkrow and other mons faster than base 90 mons are nice in order to give an opportunity to cleanly sweep. An example is Poliwhirl. Corsola can bait Elekid and Drowzee checks Elekid. If ever Elekid stayed and like Thief'd Drowzee, it'll get para'd or in late game in situations where the only way for opponent to make progress is with Elekid's coverage, this core tends to shine.

:Furret:

Furret + Seaking

Remember Magcargo being a common Mono Furret check? Then how about if its paired with a water type, Seaking! This core was used 8 times this tour. It can also be Furret with Surf then return SD/Curse Seaking. Furret + Noctowl can also work like this with Furret having Surf so Noctowl can monocurse sweep.

Now onto some more teams I want to share

Team 1: Corsoflora Furret Surf team

:gs/elekid: :gs/furret: :gs/corsola: :gs/sunflora: :gs/murkrow: :gs/hitmontop:

https://pokepast.es/5ec6c1c0e4ab72d9

The sets doesn't look standard because those are meant to counter Blaine's common comp used in this tour. Elekid had HP Water vs Magcargo/Rhyhorn/Onix. It's also Furret Surf. And it's Corsola + Sunflora because I was also expecting a Surf Furret and he tends to use Wartortle so Sunflora was crucial too.

The replay: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen2nu-1868040404-n39nr4hko8grk9985rpvr0qhres67ospw

Team 2: LS Voltorb + Gastly Abra Offense

:gs/voltorb: :gs/gastly: :gs/abra: :gs/murkrow: :gs/seadra: :gs/hitmontop:

https://pokepast.es/dc0676c133e6fadf

LS Voltorb helps Gastly and Abra survive Murkrow Pursuit. Light Screen also would have help if I put Growth Tangela here somewhere but I decided to aim for Abra Seadra sweep.

Replay: (semis vs zben) https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen2nu-1872183261-q6gt9rug4pmomna6z4e61qfdgzqlxxupw

Team 3: Drowsola + BD Poliwhirl

:gs/elekid: :gs/drowzee: :gs/corsola: :gs/poliwhirl: :gs/seadra: :gs/murkrow:

https://pokepast.es/2536ff0fb163d15c

I already explained the Drowsola + Poliwhirl above tbh so yeah here's the replay:

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen2nu-1872188866-d996ywrvme8d0vvyprqweq4ezzkl9wqpw

Team 4: Cubone Lead + Beedrill Offense

:gs/Cubone: :gs/Beedrill: :gs/Furret: :gs/Hitmontop: :gs/Murkrow: :gs/Sunflora:

https://pokepast.es/6eb88b96463c5571

Cubone can spread para via Bslam to help for Beedrill sweep. Beedrill also 4x resists HJK btw xD.

Replay: (finals vs vani)
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen2nu-1877544018-uanyqnphasyvuavyzo0kwu2bck3to64pw

Team 5: Triple Phazer Elekid FurTop team

:gs/hitmontop: :gs/Furret: :gs/elekid: :gs/mantine: :gs/rhyhorn: :gs/murkrow:

https://pokepast.es/d866ac25c1b52cb2

Every team still needs to be prepared by Baton Pass and ig I overdid it. Rhyhorn is Furret check. Mantine is blanket special check. This aims for a furret curse sweep with lead Hitmontop trying to gain momentum.

Replay: (finals vs vani)
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen2nu-1877554045-x0b7tbucgacuq0pplfxei7trz170je1pw

Team 6: Top 6 w/o Top

:gs/Venomoth: :gs/furret: :gs/seadra: :gs/murkrow: :gs/elekid: :gs/magcargo:

https://pokepast.es/b1982a4ab56f4a1f

As the team name says, this is my top 6 mons in gsc pu w/o hitmontop. Magcargo is the only dedicated defensive mon yeah but this team definitely works. Elekid checks electric, Seadra checks ice, Magcargo checks fire, Murkrow can help versus grass. Then Furret sweep xD.

Replay: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen2nu-690766

I actually didn't expect Shadow Ball working in there xD. Opp brought Drowzee which is what SBall is for and my murk's hidden power is water for Magcargo and Rhyhorn so since HP Dark is drop and Pursuit isn't enough, Shadow Ball is there for vs Abra too.

This wraps up my post! Thank you for reading everyone and I'm looking forward to other player's posts too and insights about this metagame after this GSC Grand Slam 1 tour.

Ok so I haven't played this meta since like the start, but from what I've seen, just ban Furret. There have now been two tournaments with GSC PU (the recent ALT PL and a literal "Furret is banned" tour), and people were happy to find out Furret was banned in the tours. I know the poll at the top says not to ban Furret, but that's all the way from 2020, and if that poll was redone I can guarantee it would have drastically different results.

tldr; ban Furret

I hear you. The plan is to formalize Furret's ban after ALTPL unless something drastic changes. The previous "Furret banned" tour didn't quite have the turnout or number of games played that I felt comfortable axing the mon with a limited voter base that had experience in the metas with and without Furret.

Personally I think Furret is better banned, but not really the biggest issue in PU atm and I think ALT PL is going to illuminate just how awful near-unrestricted Baton Pass is in PU. There’s actually so many Baton Pass users that can be viable compared to NU (Aipom, Ledian, Ariados, even Eevee etc.), and Ariados trap pass strats in particular can nullify a lot of BP counterplay (eg trap pass on Murkrow to eliminate it). I don’t know what the solution really is, but I do know that in its current state something should probably be done.
