[OVERVIEW]
Guzzlord's ridiculously high HP and excellent defensive typing make it a standout tank capable of checking a wide variety of special attackers from Heliolisk to Charizard. That alone would give it a powerful niche, but Guzzlord also sports massive coverage and respectable Attack and Special Attack. This turns its Choice Band set into an extremely capable wallbreaker further enhanced by the added utility of Knock Off, while even its Assault Vest set has extremely respectable damage output. Guzzlord also has access to a powerful Heavy Slam to punish Fairy- and Ice-types and enough bulk to tank some powerful super effective hits such as Whimsicott's Moonblast. However, Guzzlord's extremely poor Speed and the prevalence of Fighting-types and U-turn users, as well as Guzzlord's lack of any reliable recovery, hold it back from being truly dominant or fitting well onto more offensive teams.
[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Knock Off
move 2: Heavy Slam
move 3: Outrage
move 4: Heat Crash
item: Choice Band
ability: Beast Boost
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Heavy Slam punishes Fairy-types that may try to switch in on Guzzlord like Whimsicott and Aromatisse. Outrage is useful for getting past Fighting- and Dark-types that resist Knock Off like Scrafty and Alolan Persian, although it is by far Guzzlord's riskiest move to lock itself into. Heat Crash allows it to hit Steel-types like Silvally-Steel and Alolan Sandslash for more damage. Psychic- and Ghost-types like Mesprit and Rotom appreciate Guzzlord's ability to check Ghost-types, and, in return, they help with Fighting-types like Hitmonlee and Virizion. Mesprit also has Healing Wish to heal Guzzlord and can grant it good breaking opportunities with U-turn. Guzzlord's wallbreaking abilities pair well with physical sweepers and cleaners such as Kingler, Sneasel, and Choice Scarf Passimian. Solid Fairy-type checks such as Silvally-Steel are also recommended.
[SET]
name: Assault Vest
move 1: Knock Off
move 2: Heavy Slam
move 3: Drain Punch
move 4: Dragon Tail / Draco Meteor
item: Assault Vest
ability: Beast Boost
nature: Careful
evs: 192 Atk / 252 SpD / 64 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Guzzlord's high HP combined with Assault Vest allows it to sponge special attacks from Pokemon like Magmortar and Heliolisk while also surviving super effective attacks such as Moonblast from Whimsicott and Blizzard from Vanilluxe. Drain Punch allows Guzzlord to hit Steel- and Ice-types like Silvally-Steel and Togedemaru while providing slight recovery. Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor are interchangeable; while the former phazes setup sweepers like Shell Smash Carracosta and Swords Dance Scyther and pairs nicely with Knock Off and entry hazards, while the latter is useful for punishing physical walls such as Sandaconda. If running Draco Meteor, Guzzlord can forego any Speed investment and opt for a Sassy nature to avoid reducing damage output. 64 Speed EVs creep defensive Regirock and Druddigon, among others. Wish support Pokemon like Vaporeon and Aromatisse are appreciated to increase Guzzlord's longevity, although they can struggle to heal much due to Guzzlord's titanic HP. Fairy-types like Silvally-Fairy and Whimsicott help with Fighting-types like Virizion and Passimian, and Steel-types like Silvally-Steel, Aggron, and Alolan Sandslash help with Bug- and Fairy-types like Ribombee, Scyther, and Silvally-Fairy. Guzzlord's ability to spread Knock Off and remove Heavy-Duty Boots makes it an ideal partner for Stealth Rock and Spikes users such as Regirock and Garbodor. Guzzlord is effective at crippling defensive cores by removing items, forcing recovery moves, and phazing switch-ins, which can be particularly devastating when paired strong wallbreakers such as Gallade and Tsareena.
