Hatterene is a good anti-offense pick due to Trick Room and functions best as a late-game cleaner while having use as a wallbreaker. Magic Bounce is a great ability that allows Hatterene to bounce back status moves such as Toxic and entry hazards. Hatterene has excellent Dynamax potential under Trick Room; the Gigantamax forme is preferred, as it turns Dazzling Gleam into G-Max Smite, which inflicts confusion on the foe while OHKOing Dark-types such as Umbreon and Mandibuzz. Mystical Fire allows Hatterene to get past Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Corviknight; when Hatterene is Dynamaxed, Max Flare allows it to OHKO Zacian-C and Aegislash. Psychic with a Life Orb allows Hatterene to OHKO Eternatus and when Hatterene is Dynamaxed, sets Psychic Terrain, which further increases its offensive prowess.

Due to its poor Speed and mediocre bulk, Hatterene can find problems safely setting up Trick Room against strong physical threats; therefore, targets such as Ferrothorn, Toxapex, and Hydreigon allow the easiest opportunities to set up Trick Room. It is important to have team options such as Zacian-C, Quagsire, Hippowdon, and Ditto that are equipped to dealing with fast physical threats. Haxorus and Excadrill are ideal partners due to their good offensive synergy, as they appreciate Hatterene's ability to threaten Corviknight and function as a late-game sweeper.
