[OVERVIEW]

Fire / Steel typing combined with base 130 Special Attack makes Heatran a huge threat in Doubles OU. Heatran has powerful spread attacks, mainly Eruption, that hit most of the metagame hard, only needing Earth Power as a coverage move. Its typing and ability also allow it to check common Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Rillaboom, Metagross, and Naganadel. Despite these strengths, its lack of Speed and weakness to common offensive types make Heatran hard to justify in a team, along with facing competition from Volcanion and Incineroar as the Fire-type of the team. Heatran also gets easily threatened by common Pokemon such as Landorus, Urshifu-R, Tapu Fini, Kyurem-B, and Zygarde while also needing caution against Rillaboom and Metagross variants that often carry Ground coverage. Therefore, Heatran fits best on offensive teams, since it provides immediate damage and needs speed control to make up for its subpar Speed tier. Partners that can threaten Fire-resistant foes pair well with Heatran, such as Urshifu-R, Rillaboom, Zygarde, and Kyurem-B. Psychic-type spam deserves a special mention, since it appreciates a powerful Fire-type that can threaten Rillaboom and Steel-types, and it has Necrozma as a possible speed control option with Trick Room. Naganadel is also a great partner for its ability to check some of Heatran's best checks, such as Zygarde, Urshifu-R, and Tapu Fini, while providing Tailwind as speed control.

move 3: Earth Power
move 4: Protect
item: Charcoal
ability: Flash Fire

evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Eruption is Heatran's best move, hitting both foes and easily 2HKOing most of the unresisted metagame at full health thanks to its insane 150 Base Power. It's important to preserve Heatran's HP for maximum effectiveness.

* Heat Wave is a STAB spread attack that isn't reliant on HP, making it a powerful option even if Heatran is chipped.

* Earth Power hits common Fire-resistant foes like Diancie, Incineroar, Volcanion, and opposing Heatran.

* Protect allows Heatran to avoid damage that would weaken Eruption and stall out opposing speed control or protect itself until its partner provides speed control.

* Flash Fire makes Heatran immune to Fire-type attacks, absorbing the damage and powering its STAB moves.

* Charcoal prioritizes power on Heatran's main attacks.

* A Timid nature allows Heatran to force a Speed tie against opposing Heatran, whereas a Modest nature maximizes Heatran's power.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Life Orb gives Heatran even more power, but since it sacrifices some HP in exchange, Flash Cannon should take Eruption's move slot. Choice Specs or Choice Scarf can be used to give Heatran more power or Speed, but then it can't run Protect, and it can be very exploitable when locked into a move. Flash Cannon can be used to hit Kyurem-B and Diancie, but it has little value otherwise. Safety Goggles can help against Amoonguss under Trick Room, and Air Balloon gives Heatran immunity to hits from Rillaboom and Heatran, although the lack of Charcoal is very noticeable.

DOU & Discord Head
[OVERVIEW]
  • Separate the first sentence in two after "DOU." It goes on for way to long for little reason.
  • Its "Pokemon" not "pokemons." You repeat this throughout the entire analysis.
  • Line about Eruption is wayyyy to wordy and awkward. Just say how Heatran's access to strong spread moves allows it to hit a large amount of the meta hard. (not word per word ofc)
  • Put Naganadel over heatran for what heatran checks, it doesn't check itself.
  • "Speed" > "speed tier"
  • Put Heatran's downsides first, then what teammates it works well with, and then specifically mention psyspam.
[SET COMMENTS]
  • Rewrite the Eruption line. Say how strong it is, how it's Heatran's best stab move (not greatest), and say how it becomes weaker the lower Heatran's health is, because the way you've worded it makes it seem like the second heatran takes damage its useless. Also mention what it specifically hits.
  • Heat Wave line is better, but mention how it's still decently strong.
  • Just say how it hits fire resists, no need to say it's its only coverage.
  • It's not just opposing Heatran, it's basically any Fire-type attack and it's an important distinction to make.
  • Explain Charcoal
  • You don't have to explain 252/252 EVs anymore, just the reasons for going Timid or Modest.
[OTHER OPTIONS]
  • Mention Flash Cannon over Eruption on Life Orb.
  • Remove Shuca and do Balloon instead.

Doubles Leader
[OVERVIEW]
  • Mention checking Metagross as well.
  • Remove "Heatran might seem one of the best pokemon on the tier" as its fluff. Replace "bad typing defensively" with "weakness to common offensive types".
  • After the sentence mentioning Incineroar and Volcanion, add a line talking about Pokemon which check Heatran, including those that don't resist Fire like Landorus and Kyurem-B, and note that Rillaboom and Metagross can run Ground coverage to catch it too.
  • Mention that Heatran works with Trick Room too, connect this with the point about Psyspam since that includes Necrozma which is a typical setter.
[SET COMMENTS]
  • For Protect, remove the part about avoiding Fake Out and Heatran's partner putting on pressure since those aren't too specific to Heatran and you have enough without it (keep the speed control stuff). Instead, mention that Protect helps Heatran avoid damage which would weaken Eruption.
[OTHER OPTIONS]
  • For Choice Specs/Scarf, don't mention the bit about being walled by common Pokemon, since that doesn't really depend on the item. Instead say that locking into Eruption can be exploitable.
  • When talking about Safety Goggles being useful for Amoonguss, say "especially on Trick Room teams".
Tag me on Discord once implemented so I can check over.

(do both Rillaboom and Metagross often carry Ground coverage?
if yes: change underlined part to "Rillaboom and Metagross, which both often carry Ground coverage"

or, if Rillaboom doesn't, but Metagross often carries Ground coverage:
if yes: change underlined part to "Rillaboom and Metagross, which often carries Ground coverage"

or, if only some variants of Rillaboom/Metagross often carry Ground coverage:
if yes: change underlined part to "Rillaboom and Metagross variants that often carry Ground coverage")

Flash Cannon can be used to hit Kyurem-B and Diancie, but it has having little value otherwise. I don't disagree with the bolded text regarding Flash Cannon, but the first use of it seems out of place. Perhaps it should be moved to after the next bold statement, with a note that it should take Eruption slot if used with Protect (Choice Heatran typically uses Flash Cannon as its 4th move alongside the usual Heat Wave, Earth Power and Eruption).
