[OVERVIEW]
Fire / Steel typing combined with base 130 Special Attack makes Heatran a huge threat in Doubles OU. Heatran has powerful spread attacks, mainly Eruption, that hit most of the metagame hard, only needing Earth Power as a coverage move. Its typing and ability also allow it to check common Pokemon such as Amoonguss, Rillaboom, Metagross, and Naganadel. Despite these strengths, its lack of Speed and weakness to common offensive types make Heatran hard to justify in a team, along with facing competition from Volcanion and Incineroar as the Fire-type of the team. Heatran also gets easily threatened by common Pokemon such as Landorus, Urshifu-R, Tapu Fini, Kyurem-B, and Zygarde while also needing caution against Rillaboom and Metagross variants that often carry Ground coverage. Therefore, Heatran fits best on offensive teams, since it provides immediate damage and needs speed control to make up for its subpar Speed tier. Partners that can threaten Fire-resistant foes pair well with Heatran, such as Urshifu-R, Rillaboom, Zygarde, and Kyurem-B. Psychic-type spam deserves a special mention, since it appreciates a powerful Fire-type that can threaten Rillaboom and Steel-types, and it has Necrozma as a possible speed control option with Trick Room. Naganadel is also a great partner for its ability to check some of Heatran's best checks, such as Zygarde, Urshifu-R, and Tapu Fini, while providing Tailwind as speed control.

move 1: Eruption
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Earth Power
move 4: Protect
item: Charcoal
ability: Flash Fire
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
* Eruption is Heatran's best move, hitting both foes and easily 2HKOing most of the unresisted metagame at full health thanks to its insane 150 Base Power. It's important to preserve Heatran's HP for maximum effectiveness.
* Heat Wave is a STAB spread attack that isn't reliant on HP, making it a powerful option even if Heatran is chipped.
* Earth Power hits common Fire-resistant foes like Diancie, Incineroar, Volcanion, and opposing Heatran.
* Protect allows Heatran to avoid damage that would weaken Eruption and stall out opposing speed control or protect itself until its partner provides speed control.
* Flash Fire makes Heatran immune to Fire-type attacks, absorbing the damage and powering its STAB moves.
* Charcoal prioritizes power on Heatran's main attacks.
* A Timid nature allows Heatran to force a Speed tie against opposing Heatran, whereas a Modest nature maximizes Heatran's power.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Life Orb gives Heatran even more power, but since it sacrifices some HP in exchange, Flash Cannon should take Eruption's move slot. Choice Specs or Choice Scarf can be used to give Heatran more power or Speed, but then it can't run Protect, and it can be very exploitable when locked into a move. Flash Cannon can be used to hit Kyurem-B and Diancie, but it has little value otherwise. Safety Goggles can help against Amoonguss under Trick Room, and Air Balloon gives Heatran immunity to hits from Rillaboom and Heatran, although the lack of Charcoal is very noticeable.
